I've been coming to the Peculier Pub since I was old enough to (legally) drink in Manhattan. It's still the same loud and dive-y beer lovers paradise. A full bar and some inventive cocktails are on hand, but the Peculier Pub's claim to fame is the massive beer list: a usually rotating selection of well over 200 bottles from around the world: Israeli 'Gold Star', Sri Lankan 'Lion Stout', Lebanese '961 Lager' are some of the odder selections, with the menu also boasting a formidable assortment of hard-to-find German, English, and American brews. Throw in another 2 dozen on tap and you have arguably the best selection in the city. While you're probably better off eating elsewhere, food isn't entirely an afterthought, with bar standards (burgers, cheesesteaks, fried stuff) done decently. Cash only, so be prepared. And don't forget the check out the walls: collages of global currency and beer cans line the walls, which are themselves covered with thousands of bottle caps. read more

Oh Peculiar Pub, let me count the ways I love thee*... 1.) CHEAP craft beers (excellent original cocktails and mainstream favorites!) - local AND domestic. Their beer menu is EXTENSIVE and features everything from lagers, porters, stouts, etc (plus a great selection of fruity wheat beers...my weakness!! :D). They are listed in the order of places they come from...alphabetically. Each beer is listed with it's name, city/country of origin and a brief one-liner about what to expect. I love this and have occasionally just closed my eyes and ordered whatever beer my finger randomly lands on. This has resulted in great finds and not so great finds. Your average pint (or bottle!) here will run you $3-7 this is WITHOUT happy hour and this is 7 days a week mind you. That's fanfreakintastic for Manhattan! 2.) Food - standard bar fare really, but still - very cheap, very tasty and always warm and presented nicely. Foods I've tried here include their focaccia pizza with mozzarella cheese, marinara sauce and basil, mozzarella sticks, their burger wrap (so good!), grilled chicken wrap /club & quesadillas and their garlic cheese bread - it's a huge piece of warm, doughy bread with a garlic buttery spread and a thick, melted layer of mozzarella cheese. It's truly amazing and makes you value the little things...like bread, butter, garlic and cheese. Gives me the warm and fuzzies just thinking about it ^_^. 3.) Service - Not awful, sometimes there's a waitress - other times you have to order at the bar, but they'll still bring you your food if you let them know where you're sitting. Bartenders, waitresses and bouncers here have always been friendly. No probs here. 4.) Miscellaneous - They keep this place pretty clean, the bathroom is usually in working order and by far not the worst bathroom I've ever seen at a bar. Peculiar Pub is not too small, but not too large - kinda 'just right' sized. The music they play here can range from "indie rock" to some "top 40 pop" or your average 80s rock/bar music, but at least this place doesn't have a douchey feel to it nor does it get plowed through by annoying NYUers (you know the self-entitled/trust fund kid types, doesn't classify all NYUers but I'm not on Yelp to be all politically correct) or B&T folks (no offense to any B&Ters...but yanno...go back to midtown, makes your commute easier anyway :P). * Only real downside? They're CASH ONLY. They do have an ATM in the back though #eyeroll. Yes, I did go ahead and take off 1 star because of this. It's 2012 guys and I guarantee they'd make more money if they allowed customers to pay with plastic, start tabs, etc. With such great prices I really feel like they're missing out. Hey man, you can't give a bad review to a place that will get you a liter of beer for $10. Big frosty mug, lots of alcohol, sit and libate... done. Most bars in this town are about five feet wide. This one, thankfully, is not. So there's room to roam around, take a seat at a table, shoot pool, strike up a conversation with some girl/guy who doesn't really want to talk to you but is just trying to be nice until she can find a segue to leave in a non-rude fashion... Definitely a village vibe here in the heart of NYU country :). read more

We wanted a drink but didn't want a scene. It was still early in the evening, and we happened upon Peculier Pub. Other places nearby seemed a little too cool for us. There weren't many people inside, so we snagged a couple of bar stools and looked over the beer menu. They have a good selection of beers, and the prices were great. I'd hardly call it a dive; it's just old. (Or maybe I'm just used to really gross bars.) Bar staff seemed friendly enough. My friend and I each had a couple of beers and then headed off to catch a show. I doubt I'd seek out this bar when I'm in New York, but if I'm in the neighborhood it's a perfectly fine choice with really reasonable prices. read more

The first night I ever experienced Peculier Pub, a very peculiar thing happened. A beer magically fell from the sky, hit the floor, shattered, and everyone yelled "OPA!". I wish I was making this sh*t up, but I'm not. Peculier definitely has an impressive beer selection. There are literally 300 beers to choose from. Whenever there are so many beers, I usually sort by country (thank you, Peculier's menu, for already doing this for me!) and go from there. There is a beer for everyone here. You can tell me you hate beer, think it's gross, and hope it dies (really?) but I guarantee that if I took you to Peculier, you would find something and enjoy it. There are several tables, but don't expect to score one unless you hover over a group of people like a hawk. Service at the bar is fast but how can it not be when it's crowded? Solid pub for get-togethers with friends, straight forward bar with wooden stools and tables. It's cash only, cards won't work here. Luckily for me there was a Chase ATM across the street at Duane Reade or CVS I can't really remember. Their bathrooms are tiny!.. and the lines can get a little out of control after a certain time. It was okay, the crowd was um, different? Bartender was nice, I ordered 4 or 5 shots of tequila and it seemed like she couldn't decide what to charge me each time. $8 then $6 then $7 then back to $8. Lol? Each shot was actually a double shot so I'm not exactly complaining. Their security is also odd. There was a bouncer at the door, although he did not look or act like a bouncer. I was meeting friends there so I entered alone (around 11pm), made eye contact with him, after he didn't ask for my ID I just continued to the bar. Then a few minutes later he awkwardly checked my ID and said he wasn't sure if he should ask for it or not. Lol what? So weird. I've only been here once but my feeling is that it's more of a low key, sit at the bar or sit at a table and socialize kind of place. Not necessarily a bad thing if that's what you're going for. I was pretty charmed by this place - though, I will admit that while I was here, there were probably only four other groups inside. I think that helped speed up the service that a lot of people have complained about. The beer selection is very good. I'd say it's comparable to Gingerman's but a little more familiar. Prices are probably a little less, too. Their draft selection is a few notches above your average bar, which is also pretty cool. At a certain hour, table service reigns. I found that a bit annoying, especially since we had been there for a while before the turnover of command. I've been coming to Peculier for about a decade now, but to ave it as my neighborhood beer bar is pretty cool. Its identity as a European-leaning beer bar with hundreds of bottles is diluted by its reputation as an NYU bar. To me, this is just a quirky coincidence, though to some it may be a turn-off. Let's be honest, the main reason to come here (and one of the best-kept secrets) is the beer. They have Samischlaus for under $10. They have awesome Belgian, German, and American brews, and if you're really curious, you can also try odd and mediocre lagers from all corners of the world--Africa, Ukraine, and South America. I plan to drink my way across the bottle list, though I may keep my ambitions limited to the good stuff. You will sit in old, carved-up booths, and you will be served by young, just-21 bartenders who are nice enough. Chances are you will hit or be hit on by kids who are closer to 20 than 30. And if you're laid-back and easy to please, you'll have a pretty good time. read more

Always fun at Peculier Pub. Sundays and Mondays chill and draw. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is very welcoming so whether alone or in a group you are bound to have a great time. They have an awesome variety of beers (including one of my favorites from the Philippines - San Miguel - You MUST TRY) with excellent competitive/affordable prices... I come here often enough. The beers are on the cheaper side compared to other places, which is pretty great. The sheer selection of beers is really what blows me away. It's great to be able to try beers from all over the world. If you don't know what kind of beer you like, or just want a recommendation, the bartenders and staff are really helpful. Also, the food, for being bar food, is pretty delicious. My favorite are the burgers, I usually recommend that. I've also had the fries (curly and not), quesadillas, and the wraps. All are also pretty tasty. Although recently I had the spicy wings, and I think that's my new favorite. I have never once been mistreated here. The wait staff and bartenders have always been helpful and friendly to me. I am constantly inviting friends, from all over Manhattan and those who come to visit me from Puerto Rico, to join me for a drink and a meal here. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed. Expansive beer menu, almost too much to choose! Beer selection is big proponent on me choosing a bar, if you see my past reviews of places like Effin Gruven, or Waterzooi, you will see what I mean. So much to my delight, finding this place tucked away on Bleecker St, the throw back bar with the almost overwhelming beer menu really was a great discovery for myself. The selection is so large, that the bartender needs to call to the basement by mic to have someone grab your order from storage! The interior was interesting, and you could tell that not much of this place has changed since its inception. With booth seats that seemed as if they were made for people in the 30s and 40s because the benches that were made for 2 seemed a tad tight! And we are not big people. This is not a knock, more of a quirk that adds to the character of a not so run of the mill village bar. Highly Recommended; So on your way to The Bitter End to see a show, or the Back Fence to slip and slide on the sawdust, make a stop here, and have a beer from Hawaii, or Taiwan, or Austria, or .... you get the idea! read more

Despite the location I didn't get the young obnoxious college vibe that I thought I'd get, the kind you'd get next door at Wicked Willies. In fact the bar was a nice mix of people. There's something about Peculier that gives off a very non-NY vibe, it almost feels more like a Philly Bar to me. The place is full of old school wooden booths. There's well over a dozen booths of varying sizes, from the small booths to fit 2 to large ones that would accommodate 8 or so. Because the bar is a couple steps down from street level the ceiling is lower than most places. The decor here is really eclectic and consists almost entirely by mosaic art based on beer bottle caps. They do have a food menu or mostly basic stuff, it's edible but not that great. The beer menu on the other hand is crazy impressive (both draft and bottles). Pricing is good but definitely out of whack. How is it that a Bud Light draft ($5) is the same price as a Blue Point Blueberry Ale and more expensive than a Hofbrauhaus Munchen ($4)? Most drafts were $5-6 but did have a handful at $4 or $7. They also do a very odd thing here by offering mugs aka "half pints". A glass mug holding about 8oz or so. I guess it's a good way to try more types of beers or feel like you're spending less money but I see no other real advantage otherwise. Peculiar Pub NY Manhattan Greenwich/NYU 7:30pm Wednesday 1st April 2015 Four Stars I came here for a broadway game meetup. Some of the folk were easy to spot: less fashion savvy, glasses, not drinking, or holding an assortment of games. There was a steady trickle of people coming into the bar throughout the night. The waitress was great at the beginning but then the increasing number of patrons made the service slower and slower. On the plus side a pint of Yuengling only costs $5. They also have deep fried Oreos ($1 Each with 5 piece minimum). They were batter was salty and crispy like fish and chip plate. The Oreos were softer than expected. The thin chocolate sauce added the extra layer of decadence which help put my taste buds over the top. Note: it's pay as you go. $25 credit card minimum. ATM in the back. The restroom were awful: cramped, covered in graffiti, and just below health code standards (in my opinion). There was a trash bag on the ceiling and I don't even want to think about. Dive bar with a chill vibe. Card minimum is $20 so either have cash or meet the minimum (they will hold your ID with your card at the bar). They have an ATM if the $20 minimum is a problem. They waitstaff is attentive and you get table service or you can order at the bar. Happy hour is meh - some beers are $5, some drafts are $1 off but well drinks are $6. Goes until 7pm. It is maybe four blocks from the Bleeker street 6 station but it is a great location as there are tons of other bars and restaurants around as well. Two blocks south of Washington Square Park. The food is reasonably priced and reasonably good tasting - nothing crazy. The tables are a good size; great for groups of up to maybe 8 or 10 if you squeeze. read more

My experiences here been just as strange as the name would suggest. Given the fact this pub is located just heels from NYU, one would think this place is more of a college bar but there were many middle aged adults partaking in the fun. It was a culmination of young fake-ID driven kids who are excited to be in a bar along with older folks who just happen to feel the same way. There is an interesting range of music often playing in the background, thanks largely to a jukebox belting everything out from Oliva Newton John to Bel Biv Devoe. Whereas other craft beer bars have gone a more upscale or at least clean route, Peculier goes the other direction. This looks like your dirty, run of the mill bar--until you look at the beer list. It's run by this Asian guy who is always there playing their arcade games all day. One day, he offered to sell the building to some friends of mine for $5 million. We couldn't pony up the money--and God knows what is wrong with this place behind the scenes--but you could do a lot worse than living in the center of the village on top of this beer haven. The beer list is mostly bottles with only a small amount of worthwhile stuff on tap. The list skews more towards international stuff than American, which I know less about but is good to try other things. The American list is decent, but not quite as good as its size indicates when you take a deeper dive. Definitely stuff worth getting, but nothing particularly unique or rare. The prices are quite fair though. I've never gotten food so I cannot comment there. Service is quick but can be hard to get a hold of. Ulitmately I treat this place today just like I did in college: if people are going or if I'm nearby, I'm happy to go. I just don't go crazy for Peculier for some people. Celebrated my most recent birthday here and had a great time (even during Santa Con, with the place packed with santas and elves). My friends and I spent maybe a good half hour standing but eventually found an empty booth where we stayed for a long while. I decided to celebrate my birthday here because of the raving reviews from Yelpers, bloggers and food critics. This place seems to find its way to the top favorited pubs in NYC. Rightly so- they have a fantastic beer menu. This is one of the very few pubs that carries Filipino beers San Miguel and Red Horse. The crowd here isn't too hipster- just regular folks who share a love for good times and great beers. I only tried the fries and loved them (I think any fries will taste divine when the person eating has had more than the fair share of beer). While my first visit to the Peculier Pub was for a rowdy, frat-boy style birthday party, my second trip was a last minute beer pit stop on a weeknight. The crowds and college craziness were delightfully missing, so my friend and I were able to enjoy a peaceful conversation over some fantastic beverages. If you make a trip to this pub, be sure to take the time and sample one of the interesting brews off of their comprehensive global list. I was intrigued by the Ebulumn Elderberry Black Ale from Scotland, but the waitress warned me of its dark black color. She then clarified that it was one of her favorite menu items, being that it was surprisingly light in flavor and head. I was glad that I followed her recommendation and found that the sweet concoction went down a bit too easily. This full-bodied brew was definitely hearty enough for a man, but fruity enough to be made for a woman. I also tried a Canadian light beer that was floral, supple, and fragrant. The Peculier Pub is definitely a dive bar, as evident by the funny sayings and crude pictures carved into their wooden tables. However, they set themselves apart from the rest with their interesting beer options. The spot is definitely worth a visit...though probably best saved for a weekday evening. read more

Their menu is a long list of beers from all over the world, and yes it can boast quite a selection. I personally had the Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold - it was a light beer, but honestly, it did not taste much better or different than a good 'ol hefeweizen. The decor can most aptly be described as "dive." The tables are sticky, and graffiti-laden. You also have to pay upfront, right after you order your beers, even if you are sitting at a table and even if you may order more - weird policy. read more

The happy hour only applied to watered down, crappy Bud Light, so since I ordered craft beers, they were all full price. I love this bar SO MUCH. It's the hidden oasis of the west village. But seriously, I have to knock off an entire star for how much the credit card minimum is. Which is a whopping either 40 or 50 dollars. I just remember the amount being INSANITY and not really knowing what to do because Steph had opened one and didn't have a ton of cash so we started putting all of my drinks on her card as well. This place never really gets crowded though which is a huge plus. The reason is mostly because there is zero happy hour on every day of the week. BUT you get a fine fine selection of craft beers to pick from. It's like playing in beer candy land. Which one do I pick? Which one do I pick?! For our evening we went with themes. First starting off on flavor, I chose a hazelnut Brown Nector from Rogue and Steph a Son of a Peach from DJ Rockers. The amazingness didn't stop there. Our second theme breakfast foods: Sticky Toffee Pudding Ale from Wells and Sunset Wheat from Leinenkugel (which tastes exactly like fruity pebbles!!!) Third Theme Wine Casked Ales: Brooklyn Brewery's Monster Ale (Not so great, a little funky tasting if you ask me) and Weyerbacher's Blithering Idiot (fantasticly tasted like barrel aged beer wine like it damn well should). If you don't want to opt for exploring their enormous beer bottle menu, you can always get a nice frothy pint from their wide selection on tap. They also do half pints if you are a light weight and want to be cheap. :) They also have really great bar food here. I was skeptical but after realizing we were both starving and never going to meet our credit card minimum we split an order of garlic cheesy bread, which is just absolutely slathered with a thick gooey white cheese and generous coating of butter and garlic. In addition, we went all in on fat status and ordered their house fries that come with garlic chunks and fresh rosemary and added on additional cheddar cheese. Drunk food galore. Those chunks of roasted garlic and fresh rosemary add a certain amount of phenomenal decadence though to what everyone else declares ordinary cheese fries. Go peculiar pub for being peculiar all around! Lastly, our bartender (I forget her name) but she was super sweet offered us great ideas for beers to try and was fun to chat with. Definitely come check this place out if you're tired of fratty places in the area that are overrun with kiddies trying to get flavored vodka drinks for super cheap happy hours. It's one of the first and original craft beer bars that emerged in New York over 30 years ago and now boasts over 350 craft beer bottles and 27 beers on draught. You heard me. *Edit: Correction! They actually do have a happy hour! Wasn't aware of this because my friend always said they didn't. Before 8pm everyday, you can get $4 wells and 1/2 pints for $3 -- that way you can sample a lot of different beers. They also have a summer special on burgers and a nice selection of $4 pints! Popped in for a drink and quick bite after a show on a frigid NYC night. Cool, chill vibe in the place. Friendly service, quick with a recommendation. Solid tap list, impressive bottle collection described by country of origin. Fried mushrooms were delicious - really flavorful and good sauce. By far the worst dirty bar in NYC. How they have managed to stay in business is beyond me. Bartender was completely rude and inattentive. Sat down at a table with my friend waited for about 5 mins trying to order a drink and some food then finally the bartender walked by - asked her if we could order some beers and food. She then tells us if we want to order to come up to the bar. okay... Go up to the bar and order some fries and a couple drinks. She says ok give me a couple minutes. About 5 minutes later I wonder where my beers are... Oh there they are sitting on the bar unattended. I guess instead of letting us know she had grabbed the beers and uncapped them without bothering to put them in a glass but just decided leaving them on the bar and saying nothing was fine. To make matters worse, the table next to us had some people who were completely hammered to the point of screaming and shouting random songs together when everyone was trying to watch the SuperBowl. I saw 5/6 other people try and get them to quiet down because of how ear shatteringly loud they were. I mentioned it to the bartender and asked if she could do something about it but she didn't seem to care. Fries were a burnt mess of garbage - so bad we didn't eat more than a couple and asked for them to be removed from my tab. Thankfully she did. Mens bathroom was disgusting as well. Not surprised. Went to close the tab and she informed me there was a $20 minimum - which is the norm but in this scenario I figured she may let me slide considering how terrible the experience had been thus far. I'd give it 10 stars if I could! Remember to bring cash with you as there is a $25 minimum for credit cards. On Thursdays, they have special discounts for NYU students on beers ($5!!). On Wednesdays, they have game night which is always fun. A west village institution! I adore everything from the tavern-like atmosphere, the whole range of beers from all over the world, their delicious chicken fingers combo (excellent price point too), and their incredibly friendly and accommodating staff. Particularly love that they have game nights, as well as art-themed nights, where artists, non-artists, and those-who-want-to-be-artists are invited to dig into their amazing array of art supplies and Picasso their hearts out, beers in hand.
