We came here on a Monday night to meet some friends. Place was pretty empty when we got there but as time went by it got pretty packed, cool crowd. They have a nice, vast beer selection and trivia. They were out of a few craft beer selections but had enough options to make up for the inconvenient misfortune of not having the beer you were longing for. Experience at this place was great. I walked in about 5:30 or 6 PM and asked for the happy hour deals in the bouncer told me about the beers for four dollars. You were into so we ordered one each which was fairly cheap for an IPA. I ended up having a second round and then I walked out because it was Valentine's Day for dinner. No room for idiots like this in 2019. I don't even know where to begin with this experience. I'm not ever too keen on reviewing bars because people will come and go regardless, but unfortunately on Saturday night I encountered the most rude, obnoxious, and worst of all RACIST staff I have ever seen in my ENTIRE life. How this place can operate while treating customers like this I do not understand. We came in late for a birthday party, and I hadn't drank much earlier in the night, about 1-2 drinks. Upon arrival, the bartender immediately targeted my group of me and my Indian friends, saying we were "too drunk" and needed to be "cut off". I purchased a drink and paid for it, and while in a conversation with my sister, the bartender POURED THE DRINK OUT in front of my eyes, and claimed I was "too drunk". When I told her I paid for that, she looked at my designer bag and said "you can afford it". I could not fathom how I was being treated this way in an NYC establishment, and could not believe she had the audacity to say that to her customer. To make matters worse, she then started saying "you're done. you're done. you're done" repeatedly, not responding to my questions about why we were being treated this way, and why we were being "cut off" when there were other (non-indian of course) patrons in the bar who were definitely rowdier than us. My friend proceeded to put a song on the jukebox ($5 per song, ridiculous) and when we all proceeded to sing and dance along to it, the bartenders were rolling their eyes at us and laughing at us. After a certain point, I got fed up by their treatment and decided to leave the bar. When we did this, my friend stayed back to calmly ask the bartenders if there was a reason they had a problem with us. They avoided the question and just kept saying we were all "too drunk". I know this was not the case. The bartender's name was Nicole, and she does not deserved to be employed by any establishment based on her behavior. Peculier Pub should be embarrassed. A straight forward pub in the West Village Section of downtown Manhattan this is the pre-game and/or post-game spot if you are in the area. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here to be honest. The selection of beer here is very HUGE and the prices are fair market value. The staff is generally very pleasant and accommodating. The people that tend to come here are a mix of hipsters, locals, and tourist. Have spent plenty of great nights here with friends before heading out to other spots. It's not the best pub in the area but it certainly is not the worst. The bathrooms as others have commented are small and yes for the ladies it may be a wait (especially on weekends) Don't let my rating throw you too much, Peculiar Pub is worth a look and if you are in search of a rare out of country brew come on down ! With over 200 beers -- forget it, I have to talk about the men's washroom. Easily the most awkward layout imaginable. It's exquisite. A friend went in first and came back in hysterics. "You have to go in there," he offered, which is a messed up thing to say about any lavatory. Several beers later, nature summoned and I got to visit this tiny schmozzle of a W.C. I chose the urinal IMMEDIATELY to the right of the door which of course is IMMEDIATELY perpendicular to a miniscule stall and practically on top of the other urinal. Folks, this place is no larger than a phonebooth and a half. I considered taking a picture, but that's an effective way to earn a shiner in NYC. As I enjoyed relief, I wondered what would happen if a) someone came in to use the urinal, and b) the person in the stall came out, and c) I were to turn around, and d) someone else were to come in the front door. It's fortunate that I did, because that's exactly what happened. The four men in the restroom took a breath each other's air before I offered, "holy fuck." I think the remark brought us closer together (were that physically possible). They serve Chimay, also. Lights, darks, ambers, stouts, and ales.They are all welcome to flow over my taste buds and down into my belly. There is always a certain high when discovering a new ice cold delicious beer. Peculier Pub is a long time mainstay on Bleeker Street with an epic beer list. There is something for everyone here in this divey spot that reminds me of a college town bar. Maybe because you can find a mix of locals, NYU students, and beer lovers who congregate here over quality beers at a good price. Most of the beer selection are in bottles but they offer a nice grouping of quality draught beers that rotate. On the nights I have been here I noticed Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn Lager, Yuengling, Blue Point Blueberry, Magic Hat 9, Founders, Belhaven, Hoegaarden White,Stone -Arrogant Bastard Ale, 21st Amendment - Black I.P.A.,Weihenstephaner Hefe -Weiss, Magners Cider,Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold, Six Point Sweet Action, Gaffel Kolsch, Guinness Stout, Newcastle, ansd so many others. They even carry seasonal beers and a beer of the month. Just check the board and look over the taps. What's great about this place is that most of these tasty brews are in the $3 - $7 range for a pint. Considering that it's cash only here it's a good thing that the prices don't break the bank. The bottled beer list is another story. It's a ridonkulous assortment of beers listed by state, style, and country. It blows your mind how many they have here. I think I counted close to 100. Many of these can run you much more per bottle based on type and ABV content, but many are worth a try if willing to part with the extra cash. This is a real "Beer Nerd" bar for sure! It's actually a full bar with a cocktail and wine list but I have never ventured over to that side. They also serve food here with a decent pub menu. The bathrooms are "meh" as can be with a dive type bar. Hey, I'm just here for the beer! The layout itself is kind of fun to me. It's almost subterranean as you have to walk down into it. The tin ceiling is low and I can easily reach up and touch it. There are a lot of bench seating, booths, and tables in nooks and crannies to plop down at with friends. Staff always seems friendly and attentive. All along the walls there are bottle cap murals. Pretty rocking juke box with good tunes playing most times. It's a divey dungeon like spot but this place has it's own unique vibe and personality to it with an interesting mix of patrons. Beer with character is always more fun! read more

When we're not playing World of Warcraft in the darkness of our parents' basement or rolling 20-sided dice, we do enjoy drinking beer. Thus we have frequent meetup events where we drink beer and discuss our World of Warcraft avatars. Our search for a venue reached far and wide, from Central Bar (they were rude, difficult, and provided only 3 beers on tap) to Flannery's (the darts players made the venue rather dangerous for the tipsy wanderer). Eventually, we found Peculiar Pub. **Now, on the surface, Peculiar isn't anything special... which makes it peculiar that their name is... well... "Peculiar," which in turn is somewhat ironic, which is actually a bit peculiar on the whole. Is that a paradox? Peculiar Pub is your standard dimly lit pub with the bonus of a large (huge, one might say) and fantastic beer selection and some really good bar food (I'd pass on their wings, but everything else has been good). What has made Peculiar so great is the welcoming social ambiance and the generosity of their staff. The bar is not a rowdy one and the music is at a low enough decibel that you can talk to strangers as well as friends, and the staff has been overly accommodating considering we tend to bring in as many as 60 people at a time to the bar on every Tuesday. The big downside of Peculiar Pub is their cash-only policy. I can understand why a food truck would lack a credit card machine, but for a bar it's nearly inexcusable. If you go, bring cash so you don't drunkenly stumble to the cash machine! tl;dr: I've been happy with the venue and I think you should stop by for a beer. Well let me preface this with I really don't like hanging out in overly congested, bro filled, pretentious bars in Manhattan. And yes, you can call me a Brooklyn snob-I'm good with that. Sean M and I went to meet with some of my friends at Down The Hatch. Finally, we get to Peculier Pub. It wasn't overly crowded, divey, and there weren't a bunch of morons in there. The menu was really really impressive, the beer list kind of just went on and on. We were both sold. And then I did something stupid, since we were celebrating my birthday. I suggested just ONE tequila shot, just one. They filled tequila into a rocks glass all the way to the TOP. Here's how the conversation went between us two: Me: just one.. just one..just one tequila shot Sean. Sean: this is such a bad idea.. no, this is bad. Worst bar I have ever been to. This bar doesn't accept credit cards and doesn't let you make a tab. You have to pay for every drink you order. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Its annoying. To make matters worst, the grizzly old bouncer, was kicking everyone out. First, he started to call some guy an asshole because he didn't want to give up his sea; the seat he had been in since before the game started (not to mention that he was ordering beers the entire time). You get your pick of something like 100+ beers from all around the world, including crazy strong beers too (7+% alcohol). You can totally chill in a nook here or there; divey; tv is available for whatever happens to be on (saw some primaries polling action last time). You pay with every order, so be sure to pony up each round (although I think you can do a tab, don't recall). There will be college folk though - so be ready for dudes coming up to you with stupid questions on occasion. Bathroom is a bit on the gross side. Step out of the hustle bustle of Bleeker Street into a bar that looks like it belongs at the end of a dark dead end street in the seediest part of the seediest city on earth. But looks can be deceiving. Underneath the perfectly (un)manicured grit and grime, hidden in the dingy darkness of this half-basement space is a gem of a beer bar. They probably have about 30 unique beers on tap, with hundreds of bottles from microbreweries around the US and the world. The prices are about what would be expected for high quality craft beers in Manhattan. The bartenders and waitstaff are all great. Some are super-friendly, while others have the perfect 'I hate NY' attitude, but are super attentive and warm up after you prove you're not a total asshole. I frequent this bar on weekend afternoons and early evenings during the week. Later, especially on the weekends, it gets a bit too crowded for my liking, but I've never seen it obnoxiously packed like so many of the bars in the village. The food is simple, but it far exceeds what you would expect from a place that can't seem to afford lighting and cleaning supplies. The bacon and scallion quesadilla and the waffle fries are both top notch snacks. Also, they consistently have a good health code grade, so they must be doing something right. As a bonus, if you'd like to see the real people behind internet memes, you can go in on a Tuesday evening. A bunch of Reddit users have chosen Peculier as their weekly escape from trolling the bowels of the internet. I like the divey-ness of this dive bar. It's cozy and comfortable and not too pretentious, with big seats for big groups and a solid, icky bathroom (with no mirrors, which is oddly, the only drawback for me). The beer selection is big enough to please everyone, even people who typically don't drink much beer and the service is quick. You pay per beer/food/cocktail, which is kinda weird at first, but it makes it easy to watch your money without thinking really thinking about it. The food is greasy and bar-perfect (don't go for dinner, just go for drunken snacking) and the location is right in the middle of all the fun Greenwich Villagey things. You should know this up front: I am not intimidated by fame. As somewhat of a celebrity myself, I understand that many lower status people presume that there is a sort of social moat that separates Us and them. Please, do not be timid. We exist only to bring light to your lives (and also to our own lives). One night as I was leaving Peculier Pub, Kiefer Sutherland held the door for me. We regarded each other for a long moment, each sizing the other up. Looking him square in the eye, I opened my mouth to speak, paused, and finally said, "thanks." With mutually terse nods, we parted ways. --- The beer list is good here, with a couple truly exotic offerings, the prices are reasonable, and the waitstaff have a certain feral charm about them. I dispute the description of the crowd at PP as "fratty." The NYU children who frequent this place wouldn't last two minutes in my world, in the unlikely event that I invited them across the social moat. Word of recommendation for people who are quick to drop the f-bomb in their reviews of Peculier Pub: the best way to determine if a place is fratty is to lock eyes with someone, jostle them, and see if they yield (not fratty) or jostle you back (possibly fratty, or they are making romantic advances - which i guess is, in it's own way, sort of what being in a fraternity is all about?). Kiefer and I skipped this step, though. It's worth getting to know the bouncer here. He has some great stories, particularly about the inept drug dealers that operate on the corner Bleecker and Laguardia. The microscopic men's room is a good place to practice your jostling. Final word of warning - don't get overly excited about trying the really rare stuff on the beer list. The truly exotic bottles tend to have a fairly low turnover, so you're not likely to end up with the freshest specimen. read more

Ok, see, I'm pre-biased on this review because this is where one my favorite webcomics is often based: www.GOATS.com. So realize that in writing my review, I look around at the Peculier and see a goldfish living in a mug of beer, a zombie waitress, two aliens named Bob and Neil, an evil chicken, sexy goat and lots of Hefeweizen. Oh and Jon and Phillip. Anyways, the Pub is a dive, but it's a fun dive like Chumley's, where there isn't a square inch of table space that hasn't been gouged with a name, the wait staff could care less if you fell flat on your face dead as long as you've already tipped them, and beer, beer, beer and more beer, just flowing like wine. I recommend you order a LITER of Delirium for $10.25 so you can reenact the scene with the hobbits in Lord of the Rings: "It comes in pints?!" though you'll of course be drinking a bit more than that. I absolutely loved this place and yes it is a dive bar but its a dive bar with great cocktails, amazing beer selection, seating, food and of course AMAZING prices. If you want cheap drinks, but with top quality then Peculiar Pub is for you. I went here last night for before dinner drinks and they made awesome Mojito's and they were freshly made and really, really reasonable. I had the Blueberry, tasted the Strawberry and then tasted the Ginger Mojito. My fave was the Blueberry, but the Strawberry was a close second. The beer selection is ridiculous, they have a menu with front and back filled with all different types of beer, a lot of them on TAP and broken down by countries which is really cool. You can't go wrong, but they do not start tabs, so that's the downside, you have to pay each time. Also they do serve food and they even list the nutritional value of each of their food, which could make you think before ordering those cheese fries or that 1lb hamburger, but after a few drinks you won't care. I can't wait to go back and I usually am not a huge fan of Dive bars, but this one makes you feel good and gives you quality with the drinks, plus I'm such a Mojito snub that it was so refreshing to be able to have a really great drink for a cheap price. read more

Okay, let me first just say that I heart dive bars. That being said, this is a pretty good one. Nice selection of beers, fantastic amount of tables/seating, and while it can get really busy with college kids and 20-somethings (what self respecting dive bar doesn't?), it's one of the few places you can actually have a conversation fairly freely at anytime without yelling. Staff is nice, and the menu is surprisingly varied. The food is decent - definitely get the spiced fries over the plain ones, btw. Everything is fairly priced, from alcohol to grub. I absolutely love dive bars. The kind where letters and symbols get scrawled into the walls, on the tables, and on the support posts. This is that kind of bar where you can literally make your mark and oh, enjoy a beer while you're at it. I'll admit that I don't go to pubs that often so me saying that this bar has the biggest selection of beers I've seen might not be saying much. If you are indecisive, you don't want to go here. The beer menu has tiny tiny font, and a good amount of pages. You will spend lots of time trying to decide on one, so feel free to ask the wait staff for help. They've probably tried a good number of them, look at all the bottle caps that they saved that line the wall. This is the perfect place for tourists and expats who want to drink a familiar beer. If your country brews beer, they probably have it. If they don't have the beer, your country probably doesn't brew beer, like France. My only pet peeve about this place is that they don't do tabs. Atmosphere is a bit lacking but the beer list is solid and the shots are cheap. They have a huge beer list that is broken down by country. There is some super obscure shit on there, I was thoroughly impressed. The beer selection and cheap prices bump it from two to to a solid three stars in my book. Now about the shots. Holy fuck are they big! I was there with Thao L the other night, and we were on a mission to get hammer. I'm happy to report that five enormous $5 tequila shots later it was mission accomplished. I have never felt as strongly about giving a place one star as much as I do for Peculier Pub. If I could give it negative stars, I totally would. I was here last night with a friend of mine and there were so many egregious things to gripe about. First of all, this is not my first, second, or third visit. I've been here before and though service is always spotty and the waitresses add on a special "tax" to your drink bill, I always put up with it because the beer selection is indeed excellent and the prices overall are still good, even with the extraneous "tax" that is tacked on. With my recent visit, the bar was not busy at all. Found a table for a friend and myself and as soon as we sat down, we saw a bunch of flies and gnats swarm away. Completely disgusted, we began to look for another table but saw that every other table had a similar problem. Our table was also very sticky along with the menus that were given to us. Anyone ever hear of a washcloth? Once we put in our drink order to the inattentive waitress (got her on tbe third try), we were asked to put down a $12 deposit for a $10 one liter. I have never heard anyone do this in any city, in any bar. Whatever. I put it down. We drank. Talked. Had a great time with my friend despite the incessant annoyance of the waitresses asking if we wanted more beer even though our glasses were 1/4 full to full. Like WTF! Seriously? Leave us the fack alone. The only time the waitresses left us alone was when I was trying to get my $12 back. Surprise, surprise. I told one waitress for my money back to which she simply responded, "Oh the other waitress." She proceeded to not relay the message. Again, after the third try I got our waitress and asked for my deposit back. She gave me $10. I said what happened to the other $2. She said there's a tax. So you're saying that on a $10 drink order, there's a 20% tax? Hmmm. Interesting. I thought Bloomberg was bad, but I guess a 8-9% tax ain't bad in comparison to 20% they're touting at Peculier Pub. If someone is that conniving and unethical as to steal a couple dollars off a repeat patron, then so be it. You can worry about the Georges while I work on the Benjamins, baby. Avoid this place if you don't want to be taxed by inattentive waitresses. The waitress that we had specifically was white, brown hair, glasses, a bit overweight, and maybe about 5'7" or so. Peculier has an incredibly huge selection of beers and STRONG martinis made with 4+ shots ($7.50). I know some of the other reviewers have bemoaned the NYU-ness of this bar, but for us that's the point-- this is where my friends and I come when we want to pretend we're still in college, and it works every time. The ceiling is low and the place is packed with young'uns. The barmaids come to you and add up hefty drink bills in their heads. If you're looking for an obscure beer, you will probably find it (though my friends didn't find the New Zealand beer-- Speights-- that they were looking for)... or a suitable replacement. 300+ beers available for your tasting at the Peculier Pub!, what's not to like! IPAs, ambers, darks, domestic, international...they got it all. This is one of my favorite college pubs around the NYU college area whenever I visit my friends here. There's never too many people around and plenty of seating for everyone. The only annoying thing about Peculier Pub is their cash only policy, so make sure you bring some cash for a few pints with your friends. read more

One of my best friends once worked here. He most certainly made the best burgers this place ever saw. I know this could come across as biased and that's the reason why I have left this review at 3 stars instead of 4. When CK (a.k.a. Mackeral Jack) worked here the burgers were incredible. I would get off of work and he would be so eager to make the best burger his ingredients would allow. That said - I've been back to the pub, which I will say has friendly bartenders and an exquisite beer selection (Aventinus Dopplebock - check it out) - and the food has dropped to par pub food. I used to waddle out slipping into a cholesterol coma of joy, but these days I just walk. CK moved back to the west coast to fatten up a mommy and son, and he's doing well - but - goddamn, I miss his burgers. read more

Plainly put, this place is AWESOME. They have a wide range of beers from around the world. This place was recommended to me by a friend who recently moved to the area and usually comes on a Saturday (the most packed day). We went on a quiet Sunday, and enjoyed good bar food, great beer, and watched a football game. Our bill was surprisingly low (about 50 bucks for three people) and we had about 3 beers each. HUGE beer selection: 300+ and quite a good variety on tap too. Lots of local brews! The beer list is divided by state/country. They always have Magic Hat on tap. I can get behind that. No tabs, you have to pay for your drink when you get it. Once a waitress came to take our orders, and other times we just went to the bar ourselves. They automatically add 15% gratuity to each beer. It's never been too crowded in my experience (Halloween night excepted). Good low-key alternative to Grassroots Tavern, which has a similar "dungeon" feel but is dirtier, louder, and overall skeevier. A good place to go if: - you want to try lots of different types of beer but don't want to be irritated by pretentious asshats pretending to be beer connoisseurs - you want to be left alone with your friends and not annoyed by waitstaff, drunks, or otherwise chatty people read more

This is a great beer spot. The selection of beers is among the most extensive I have encountered anywhere in New York, and indeed in the world. Only about 15 beers on draught, none of which are particularly exciting, but hundreds of others in bottles. The beer menu is organized by country. The prices are reasonable for both the beers and the food. I've had the French fries, and they were fine. The pub tends to be quite packed - at least every time I've been there - and thus service and seating capacity often suffer. The crowd is typically college students and 20-somethings. If I recall correctly they only take cash, so be ready for that. read more

I would say that this place is only mediocre. True there is a huge beer selection (everyone pointed it out) but the atmosphere is mediocre as well...a bit dingy in my opinion. I think that serving lots of good beer should be done with a touch of enthusiasm and love (see Monk's Cafe in Philly for how it's really done). This place, however, seems to lack that. I agree, the girls serving beer don't know what they're talking about. They can't recommend you a beer outside of 4-5 options on tap. Yes, if I want a Belgian beer, I can come up with Chimay all on my own. Prices are average, perhaps even on the cheap end for quality beer in NYC. If I was in NYU town and was in the mood for some great beer without the attitude, I'd come here. However, if I really wanted good beer in NY, I'd go to Gingerman in Midtown (for Belgian). Definitely there are better choices out there than the Peculier Pub. read more
