Peet's is a solid coffee shop. I usually buy the coffee con panna here. I have to explain how I want it made, a small cup of espresso with lots of whipped cream on top. I wouldn't say that Peet's is the best of anything that they do, but they good at everything they do. I have been a daily customer of this Peet's for about 2 years until just recently. They have completely changed the staff and management here and it really shows. The employees never smile, some have bad attitudes, the manger is never present and when he is he is just standing around with a blank face. He never smiles or greet customers in a welcoming way and every interaction that I have had with him he is very rude and has a bad attitude. Absolutely no customer service skills. This place use to be so welcoming and the staff so friendly but now the lines are long, the service is so slow and the attitudes and personalities of the people working here are just horrible. I've been a Peet's customer since 1981, but this store has convinced me it's time to find another source for great beans. I can tolerate the horrible parking situation. What I can't abide is that you can't buy beans, tea, equipment or supplies without standing in the drinks line. I go to this peets all the time. They are very cool. The staff is awesome. They usually remember your name and order and are always kind and welcoming. The coffees are always good here and if they make a mistake they are always happy to remedy it. read more

Slow motion 4 me, slow motion 4 me... that's the song that came to my head waiting in line here. There were two cashiers but they were taking their sweet time doing everything but ringing people up. Then the wait to get my caramel latte SLOW! I was so dusted and disgusted but all it took was one taste to make it all good. The parking for this location sucks too, small lot and crowded. Went in to try a pumpkin freddo and it was packed! They called out my order and said "no whip" I'm thinking wth I never said that! I love whip cream! So I tried to get someone to put whip on my drink but they were so busy trying to help this women carry like 15 drinks out. I felt bad for the poor lady that gets stuck w catering to her office but damn I need my whip cream before I leave. What seems like 15 mins later I finally got the whip on my drink, but where's the lid? Ok...back in line. The drinks are good but this location sucks! Very Courteous staff...they provide best coffee ...much better than overrated starbucks. The coffee is always optimum hot...The location is very clean and seats are very comfortable ( for me it is very important to enjoy my coffee in a comfortable seating). Only downside is that the place can be busy at times, but they are busy because they are good. :-) read more

my car was broken into today... I will not be back to this Peets, if any. Reason, they have know for some time there is a problem with break ins and yet they still DO NOT have any security. I was told by many customers that came by during my police report that they have seen many broken windows. So i searched for police reports and there they are! Reported but Peets still is not helping us by protecting our car and belongings. This ruined my day, my car and my personal feeling on supporting a business like this. First, I have to say, I LOVE Peet's coffee. But you REALLY need to train your minimum wage cashers better, and teach them to NOT be low life beggars! Order a large cup of coffee. $2.50. Hand her $3, she takes my change and drops it in the "tip jar (I refer to these as pan handling jars). I hold my hand out and say, where's my change. She give me one hell of a dirty look...and digs out the change. Actually, why not get rid of the pan handling jars and go for a more professional look? read more

I love Peets and wish there were more locations, but we will have to make do. This particular location is directly across from the El Cerrito Plaza and has a relatively tight parking lot. The parking lot is shared with a Fedex Kinko's and can be difficult to maneuver early in the mornings. The coffee shop is staffed with upbeat and friendly employees. The iced coffee and hot chocolate (nonfat) are my particular favorites. The scones are delicious and a little pricey, but worth the money. Lastly, any purchase gets you one hour of free wi-fi. read more

Ok so I have only drank Starbucks when it comes to "fancy" coffee and even then my husband always goes in and gets it for me so I don't even know the name of what I like. One day I decided to try Peets because, well just because! I didn't know what the hell I was ordering and when I told the lady what I like..."Cold coffee...sweetened... but not with heavy cream or anything.." She wouldn't suggest anything and just looked at me like "Yes! What do you want?" So I looked at the menu and picked something that looked right and then I ordered an ice tea for hubby and beg-my-pardon I had the nerve to ask if the tea was sweetened! As soon as my drinks were up I sweetened them myself as fast as I could and ran out of there embarassed by my ignorance and the cashier's.. I mean Barrista's evident hate for me. The stor was nice, the coffee was good and strong so it really is a good place but my experience with that particular employee knocked off a star. This place is excellent, as far as Peet's stores go! The staff was so nice--the girl at the counter was really attentive and friendly, our drinks were ready almost instantly, and another guy saw that I had a laptop that wasn't plugged in and came and moved the little mobile counter with the sugar/straws/lids and showed me where a hidden outlet was. I would not go quite as far as Gary P. in his overall dismissal of this place, but I will concur that their espresso drinks are hit-or-miss. Sometimes it's decent, at other times downright weak. It used to be that me and my coworkers would sneak out to this Peet's in mid-afternoons. A string of weak drinks eventually sent us to Fellini's (down University Ave. toward Berkeley), which was inexpensive and routinely great, but a bit far to travel. In the end, I bought my own espresso machines for home and work, and at this point this Peet's pretty much only serves as my source for fresh-ground beans. (No, I don't have a conical burr grinder. Yes, I do know the drinks would be that much better if I had one.) On a positive note, their coffees have always been fresh and strong. One more note: do not break any traffic laws in the vincinity of this shop, especially a left turn across the DOUBLE YELLOW on San Pablo. Cops are often waiting in ambush to pounce on this infraction. read more

Everyone who works here (and has worked here) for the many years I've been coming to this Peet's has been friendly, welcoming and professional. Love this Peet's! Certainly my favorite in the area. It is consistently busy, but always clean and well kept. Parking is really really easy and it's a great meeting spot for anything you want -- lot's of locals meet up regularly and it definitely has a community spirit. Hard to find parking to access their services. Their lot is small, shared, and always full. Street parking also nearly non-existent so I'm writing this review from their competitor's coffee shop (international chain known for mermaid logo) in plaza nearby that has plenty of parking. I have been drinking Peets Coffee since Mr. Peets opened up the Vine St. shop in the mid-60's. However, the El Cerrito store on San Pablo Ave. seems to cater to smokers; you have to walk past the smoke to get inside, and smoke wafts into the store since the group hovers right outside the front entrance. The law requires at least 25 feet away from the door, but that is being ignored here. I know 2 people (who have never smoked) who developed lung cancer by 2nd hand smoke (so say their oncologists), and I find it hard to believe that in this area, of all places, that it is tolerated. While I have great sympathy for smokers, who have been addicted by a very ugly industry (and they killed my best friend), allowing this situation to exist is intolerable. With great discomfort, I have moved over to the Starbucks at Barns and Noble because the door is far from the coffee shop. read more

I've been going to this Peets for about 5 years now and it's about time I actually write up a review. My typical drink is a tuxedo (aka black&white) mocha and they always make a wonderful one! All of the baristas and peeps that work there are really friendly and do their jobs very well. At times I've used this coffee shop as an external office and I've always found it a great place to set up shop and work. The environment is welcoming and it feels like a community hang out. There are several groups of "regulars" that come every day or multiple times a week and they are all nice too. I love that I feel like this is "my Peets". read more

I would give them zero stars if I could. I ordered the coffee of the day and for some reason it takes more than 20 min to be made. Customers that came after me were getting their drinks before me and leaving. I would not come here again. Either they discriminate or a basic coffee is not a big concern.
