The town Penelope's is located in was a convenient pit stop for visiting the Rockies, and I ordered the Elk Cheeseburger $17 +$1 for cheese + $2 for fries. Decided on elk since we saw some that day. The burger was tasty and had the essential lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and I'm glad they include grilled onions! Would rec to keep all the add-ons bc the elk patty is like a leaner beef, def needed the flavors to keep it from being dry. Yes, you read that right: sliced avocado serving as both top and bottom bun. It looked amazing and he said it tasted even better - super fresh, creamy, and a perfect swap if you want something lighter but still satisfying. I went with the Buffalo burger, and after way too much deliberation about bun alternatives (so many fun options!), I finally committed to going 1/2 avocado (top) and 1/2 grilled onions (bottom). Best decision of the day. The grilled onions gave that sweet, smoky base, with a slight crunch and the avocado on top added the perfect cool, rich finish. We always go for the Elk or Bison Burgers and have not been disappointed! Becase of the price, we usually just go for the 1/3 lb patties. Decent sized patties but on the thinner side. The buns are pretty thick but not necessarily a bad thing. You get a heaping amount of fries if you opt for fries. The only downsides are that the dining area can get crowded fast and its on the pricier side for burgers here. Parking can also be be tricky since its downtown, but I would say its worth it for sure. Elk and buffalo burgers run at $16 for each (1/3 lbs plus lettuce, tomato, onion) plus $3 for a meal with a side of fries or a different choice.
