I've been coming to Penfolds for about 2 years now. Ever since I moved to Temecula. Come hungry and leave happy should be the motto here. Any time I'm craving American Breakfast I usually end up at Penfold's. There's something for everybody here. The portions are huge. I'm an early bird and I always sit at the counter. Something about the counter makes it feel old school which I love. The staff is absolutely amazing. Everybody greets you with a good morning and a smile. And the best part now you're able to pay on your phone as soon as they hand you your check which makes it extremely convenient. A plus by my books. Penfold's is THE BEST. Right off the freeway, always plenty of counter seating (seriously even if you see a huge line outside, go in and check the counter seats). Many choices and they even make real bloody Mary's (good mimosas too). Service is always good. We love to stop on our way home on the 15 from LA or SD.... Portion sizes large. I went to Penfold's Café because I wanted a comfort food breakfast. This restaurant provides that. It's almost hidden at the southernmost end of Old Town, so you have to know it's there. As a result, it tends to cater to the locals who are mostly an older crowd. This means that once you walk in the door, you are in the 1950s. You do not worry about cholesterol, alcohol with your breakfast, or dessert carbsthese issues do not exist yet. The first thing you see once you're in the door is their bakery counter. It's filled with all sorts of goodies, and your resolve to diet is quickly going out the door that you just entered. If your resolve holds until you get to the table, you will know that they make an incredible cinnamon bun that you can't live without, crispy waffles with fruit, blueberry muffins, and we haven't even gotten to the entrées yet. I enjoy omelettes. My favorite is a spinach, mushroom and cheese omelette, which is wonderful. Even better with the side of hollandaise sauce! Their biscuits and gravy is a meal in itself, and you probably won't be able to finish it. It's big! and the waffles are crispy and cook ed just right. and if you are into breakfast Meats or Paleo, they've also got you covered with steak, bacon, ham, and even corned beef hash. Nobody will judge you if you wanna drink with your breakfast. And when I've been there in the past, lots of people weren't being judged (wink! Wink! They also have a little patio area adjacent to the parking lot. On a windy day, it can be rather cold and dusty. Otherwise, it's a nice kind of quiet place to have brunch with your family or friends My only negative experience ever was that I ate on the patio one time, and so got my dog a hamburger patty, which I frequently get her when she accompanies me out to breakfast. The going rate is usually $3.50 to $4.00. I didn't ask so the fault is on me, but Penfield's charged $8.00, which I thought was ridiculously high. We had Cadie & Lisa for our servers and they checked in on us often and offered refill on coffee! Penfold's has something for everyone. On a busy Sunday morning they were able to secure 4 tables under their canopy for our party of 24. We had 2 waitresses attending to us and they were awesome. They were beyond friendly and sweet, and really took care to make sure our never ending requests were fulfilled. There were times when we had to wait a while for them to come back to us, but overall they had a lot on their plate and still kept our group satisfied. The menu is HUGE. It consists mainly of American breakfast and lunch dishes, with a good amount of "south of the border" menu sections as well. They have plenty of breakfast alcoholic drinks which our group took great advantage of, and they happily fulfilled our requests for minimal juice in our mimosas. My order was the California Style Philly Beef and I was surprised to find that it came more in the form of a roast beef grilled cheese sandwich. Fabulous! Found Penfold's on Yelp looking for a breakfast place. Crystal was our waitress and I have to say I've never seen a gal work as hard as she did. Came in on a Sunday Brunch, place was busy so we assumed food must be good. Unfortunately we sat down and waited for 20 minutes for the server to come to the table. She asked us if anyone has come by to get our drinks, knowing that she was the server and that she came by 20 minutes prior telling us I would be right back to get our drinks. Ordered a Bloody Mary and a screwdriver. Screwdriver came out warm with no ice in the cup. First red flag. Ordered my daughter a cheese pizza. Served us a frozen TINO'S pizza. Should be illegal because you are using another competitors food. They literally microwaved a pizza and served it. Take it off the menu! Daughter was disgusted by the pizza. 10 minutes later they dropped off our food. My wife got a Denver omelet and the bell peppers and onion were completely raw and ruined the dish. My burger was basic and fries were raw. When we ordered, we asked for sides. They charged us 4 dollars for avocado and more for sour cream. The server should disclose how much extras are because 4 dollars for avocado is ridiculous. We sat there for ten minutes after getting our bill. Had my credit card out on the end of the table and every worker walked by multiple times without telling me that we have to pay up front! Finally I call my server out to take my card and she tells me to pay up front. I've worked in the restaurant business for more than 10 years and my wife as well worked in the restaurant business. Complete laziness for this new generation that won't pick up your card and bill. DO NOT sit outside. They sat us right by the door which has a fly fan on it so every time they open the door it engages a huge exhaust fan. They come through the door every 30 seconds! Will never come back. This last time was for my daughters birthday. Both times the food has been quite underwhelming. Our July 8th visit, the sausage was not even warm to the touch & the eggs were undercooked. The French toast.. who can mess up French toast?! Apparently it's easier than I thought as it was well underdone and very mushy. The 3 of us split a cinnamon roll and this time, the cinnamon roll was the only thing throughly cooked, but there lied the issue. It was well over baked, dry and the frosting was nothing but a stick of butter. Eatable? No. Pass. None of us finished our meals. At what point is there something sitting at the window watching the food that hits? All 3 of these plates should've been pushed back just by looking at them. Maybe our first visit here was that rarity to where they were on point and the food was great because since, we haven't seen that same food nor service. Notes: Don't get the waffle. She did not explain that it was an uncharge or that it would be a huge item that would feed all 8 of us. My breakfast entree was 22 dollars and this did not include the price of drinks. If the server would have provided more information, I would have ordered something completely different and we could have ordered only one cinnamon French toast that would feed anyone who wanted some and, had enough to take home. The normal price of breakfast dishes are 18 dollars. I believe the place is more about money than providing good food and service. read more
