If I could I would give it zero stars. I've had many massages at similar places and it's never been as bad as this. My massage therapist was sick so he was sniffling / inhaling his own snot the whole time. So loud that my friend who was getting a massage in the room next door commented on it. I had to tell him several times to go blow his nose. The massage was terrible. It didn't seem like he knew what he was doing at all. On top of it they demanded a minimum tip. That is unheard of and so rude. Especially since I would have left nothing for the poor service and massage. I am so disappointed and feel as though I wasted my money. I had about an hour to kill before meeting friends for dinner (just a few doors down) and all I wanted to do was put my backpack down and have a seat somewhere. Bingo! A 45 min foot massage, that sounds like the perfect way to unwind before a delicious meal with friends. It wasn't packed and I was seated right away. I'm really disappointed. I've been to a lot of Chinese places for massage. I speak fluent mandarin. I told my masseuse about 10 times to go harder, and I don't ask for the hardest pressure. The effort was Anemic. Like I was applying lotion at home after a shower. Utterly unsatisfying. At times, I think she fell asleep because the pressure went to feather light and she stopped massaging me. No appreciation of soft tissue on bone vs bone on bone anatomy. Second time, the whole hour I was getting a massage a man and a few women were talking extremely loudly in the front in Chinese, and the guy was shouting and laughing a bunch. Really ruins the relaxation. I decided to give them another shot today and as I was changing in the room, the same thing happened with voices and shouting louder than the music being played. I decided to put my clothes back on and leave because I knew it would drive me nuts if I stayed. The receptionist offered to give me a different room farther away from the shouting! What?! My friend and I went in together for a 30 min back + 30 min foot massage. The massage was ok but the therapists talked to each other the entire time (even after we kindly asked them not to as it was very distracting). Despite the endless chatter during the massage, I would have returned had it not been for the disrespectful woman at the register who said my tip was not good enough. She demanded more and was so aggressive about it. She tried to force me to tip more than 20 percent even after I told her twice that I did not want to. Extremely rude! Why would I tip more than 10 dollars on a 56 usd service if the therapist was speaking loudly the entire time? It was not a relaxing experience for me and tip should be discretionary. It is not normal to force someone to pay more than what they comfortable with especially when the service was subpar. The whole point of a massage is to relax. How can anyone relax with two people laughing and chatting very loudly the entire time :( read more

Such a shame that this place is so cheap - nickels and dimes for a tip. I got a 90-minute massage and tipped 20%, but my masseuse was at the front desk as soon as he was done to watch what I tipped. He then started screaming at the receptionist about how my 20% was less than what the shop recommends (which was $3 more by the way). I was then asked if I could pay more, which is ridiculous. However, I got a deal through Groupon...which was the only reason I agreed. If the masseuses are that hard up for $3 and the "nice" attitude lasts as long as you give them over 25%, it is NOT worth it. So cheap and sad - will not be back again. read more

First of all, she asked me for $5 I didn't even know why but I said whatever take it. Then I went into the room and she was talking to a male coworker on the way and I was a little worried that was going to be my masseuse. Of course he was (eye roll) as a young girl (24) I thought it was a little inappropriate but like whatever. The massage went on and it had to of been the shittest massage I've ever experienced couldn't even enjoy it for two seconds. Probably because my pants were halfway down my butt half the time... a lot lot lower than I'm used too... The english there is very minimal but once i got in to room my 30 minute massage was GREAT!!! i had an older woman with glasses who spoke NO english except "strong" or "medium" The place is spotless. $26.00 for 30 minutes......I'm happy I live 2 blocks away!!!!! read more

I had an awful experience at this location yesterday. I was charged several hidden fees at the end of the massage and the people working there were downright rude about it. I wouldn't recommend this location to anyone, they trick you with "cheap" prices at the beginning and charge you several mandatory fees at the end of the massage. Wow this place is a disaster. Average service but during it I heard a man get up out of his service and leave asking the front desk why they were being so rude to him. Worse, I concluded my service and tipped 20% which was $6. My therapist started banging on a poster by checkout saying "$10!! It Should be $10!!!" (they now have a sign at the front that says you should be tipping $10 for any 60 min service.) I said I did leave you a tip and she just got mad and stormed off. What an absolute joke. First, that behavior to a client is completely unacceptable and second if you feel like 20% isn't enough of a tip for your employees such that you need to print a poster about it then you might consider paying them more. I work around the area so decided to give this place a try. I walk in during my lunch break and immediately got a room for back massage. I was certain that I mentioned I want female three times but they don't comprehend at all. I think these basic words you should know when your client asks you. I finally got a female after the front desk receptionist came in and asked me whats wrong. Ridiculous I had to repeat several times. I've been to other chinese massage places and they understand a little English at least. The massage was not even good she kept pinching my head and neck muscles more than anything. Back massage was mediocre (guy barely massaged and spent more tome readjusting where my arms and legs were positioned on the table) and then when I only have a 20% tip the guy rudely harassed me until I gave him another dollar. I think they should be less concerned with demanding tips and focus on improving the massage experience which would have made me more inclined to tip higher. I had a gift card to use which I mentioned on the phone when I scheduled appt. but when I went to present it after the massage- which was very good, but the cleanliness and comfort of the table, towels used, etc. was subpar-the staff didn't know how to redeem it. I ended up having to pay for the service because of this. There's definitely room for improvement here re: their business practice, communication and quality of service. read more

So, I have been a regular customer for over 6-7 years at the old location of Taiji Body Works at West 8th street. Bo used to do my massages up until he left.. then just random folks working there but never had a problem.. up until now. So, I called to make an appointment for a couple's massage(early Vday date) and found out that they were at a new location 114 West Houston St. Not a problem... made the appointment for the same 'ol price of $48 for 75 mins per person. On 02/13, We were greeted nicely by the receptionist and taken to the back right away. I tried to explain to the masseur what I wanted for us both.. barely understood me to the point I tried not to get frustrated in front of my babe and gave in to the deep massage and hot rocks. She didn't understand what "reflexology" was (why not? Hell if I know) Massage was a bit rough but was needed. After our massage, I went to pay as the two women who gave us massages stood there as I paid. So she told me $96. I gave $110 and told her to give them the tip. The receptionist TRIED to muscle me for more tip! First of all, I paid about 15% tip per person OF THE $48 RATE! The receptionist tried to get loud and say well, customers usually give $15 per massage. I asked her (she not knowing I'm not the new kid on the block) was the tip mandatory... SHE HAD THE NERVE TO SAY YES!! So you want me to give about a 31.5% tip per person?! NOOW, I'm visibly pissed off in front of my date nonetheless. And I said well, let's check the site together about this "mandatory tip" you speak of because I DONT SEE THAT ANYWHERE. Once she saw me pissed her tune changes.. "Well.. it's not mandatory but..." ...BUT MY ASS! Take this damn tip or get NOTHING! I was so over it that I vowed that I wont be EVER going back there and probably wont try the other taiji locations because of this. Stop trying to muscle people to give a crazy amount! So because of something that was supposed to be relaxing and a great experience turned upside down. Two stars! I would've gave one but the massage wasn't too bad. read more
