Every sandwich place goes for the trifecta, and this place is one of the few that does. * Great sandwiches - The meat is cut in front of you on one of those Cosmo Kramer machines. You can have it grilled or not (Have it grilled. What are you, a Nazi?). The tomatoes here are exemplary. The mustard is great too. I usually get the Club, but that's just me. * Great fries - I literally saw the owner cut up the potatoes, dump them in the fryer and then put them in my basket. Fresh fries is what they should call them. * Great drinks - The lemonade here is to die for. I'm usually a "I'll just get a water" person, but the lemonade here is too good to pass up. All these things make for a great business model and a great eating experience. Plus, the owner really feels a part of the community. So i went to this location Today and i had a email with a coupon for a free 6 inch sub when i went to the store the lady behind the counter told me she couldn't redeem my coupon unless it was printed because the owner changed the policy is a very rude tone why I'm upset is because no where on that email does it say to print and bring it in my opinion thats very unprofessional to reject a coupon and a customers business because your location decided to change the rules and or policy defiantly will not be going here nor will my whole office i do not recommend anyone to ever go there... Okay, I don't normally review chains, especially fast food chains of any kind, but I just want to get the word out that I found a Penn Station in downtown Rochester! I was interning in Cincinnati a few years ago and discovered Penn Station then. It is pretty common in Ohio. I was ecstatic when I found one back home in Michigan! My most favorite thing on the menu is their Philly Steak and cheese! They cook the meat right on the spot. Onions, mushrooms, and peppers are added upon request. They also use fresh potatoes for fries! Like, you can see whole potatoes behind the counter! OMG! I've never had a REAL Philly steak and cheese from Philly, but these are the closest thing to it! mmmmm sooo delish! read more

It was busy during the timeframe and she was able to make sandwiches really fast while still making them look amazing. On tops of that she was able to be personable and friendly with customers! I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!! This is how much I love this place, I live in Sterling Heights and drive here just to get a sub at this location. I love the variety of subs that they offer. Between the classics (Philly Cheesesteak and Dagwood) to the different (Chicken Cordon Bleu and Reuben). Personally I feel they include a little too many onions in the Philly Cheesesteak, but you can always tell them to give you less or none...this does make it better. I've tried about every sub on this menu and personally my favorites are the Reuben and the Artichoke subs. The subs work great because the bread is freshly baked and freshly grilled. What makes this place even better are the fresh cut fries. These are amazing. Plus even better that they offer malt vinegar in the restaurant or in packets to go. The wait is a little longer, but it's what you would expect for freshly assembled sandwiches. Plus the fries are cooked at the right times so that they are perfect when you get them. The cheese steak was okay, but nothing to write home about. It seemed like it was missing something (and I even got the onions, peppers and mushrooms added). The fries were pretty darn good, but these days I have lots of options when it comes to fresh cut fries, so they aren't likely to get me to come back. Came in on Saturday on St. Patty's Day. The guy at the counter, think his name was Aiden, was incredibly smug and rude. Everyone at this location just seemed to have a bad attitude, which is weird, because usually the employees at most Penn Station locations are very cool and professional. Even my brother seemed to be turned off by another cashier who served him. We don't like the location and lack of parking anyways, but it's the closest location off 75 for us but we will probably go somewhere else now. Love the subs here, but a few things always make me think rwice about coming here: 1. They are pricetly for a sub shop. A med sub small fy and drink can set you back $14 or more 2. They staff it hit or miss. Sometimes the place os well staffed with friendly employee. Other times they are painfully understaffed with a group of teens who don't seem to know their job. read more

I have heard so many good things about this place, and since I work down the street, one day I took a detour and stopped in. I got the Philly Steak & Cheese (thanks to the Kate + 8 episode that was on the other day where they ate them) and was looking for a delicious gooey mess. Now I'd never had a PS&C before anywhere, so I suppose I don't have anything to compare it to. But, I thought it was merely sub-par. It was tasty enough to eat, and I did enjoy the crispy bread. But delicious enough to stop by again? Probably not. I didn't find it to be anything special. I am also a plain fry girl. I don't add salt, I don't add ketchup or salt & vinegar (I have Canadian in my blood). I thought the fries that I had here were also just okay. I declined the condiments and once I started to eat my fries, I was disappointed. Good fries shouldn't need to be covered up, but I thought these could have used some more taste. read more

I have been coming here less these days because of where I now live but I took the extra drive out here today and discovered I'm not missing much anymore. The food is still pretty good but I can get that from other locations. Today my girlfriend's sandwich was falling apart and when we ordered medium fry to share, I'm pretty sure they just gave us a small. Can't be certain but having over 80 check-ins here in the past few years, I feel like I have some understanding of what has existed in time's past. There's almost all new faces and maybe that has something to do with it. They're hiring right now so maybe it'll get better and maybe it'll get worse. It's still in a nice part of town but it's not worth the drive I don't think. I work out this way so I'm sure I'll check it out at some point. One last point of contention, though not something I hold against this place specifically, is that the nearest public parking besides the small adjacent lot is now no longer free. Pretty good, high in price, but that's pretty much on par with other sub shops like DiBella's or delis in Oakland County. For whatever reason the itemized receipt didn't come with my food, just the credit card confirmation, but I'm 95% sure I was charged for my free fry (comes with the first Yelp check-in) and the person working the register didn't know the code and had to manually input it. Anyway, the food! My cheesesteak is pretty tasty, I added green bell peppers. The bread is great, not too thick and tastes rather fresh. The fries are okay, probably not worth the hassle--only because I like a bit of salt on my fries. It's nice that they're natural cut though. I'll update when I find out about the Reuben. read more

Wanting a sandwich but sick to death of Subway, we decided to give Penn Station a try. I ordered a Philly Cheesesteak and my husband had a sausage sub, both with the homemade fries. The sandwiches were excellent. The bread is just right - perfect combination of soft and toasty. Previous reviews have raved about the fries, so perhaps my expectations were too high, but I wasn't blown away by them. They tasted ok, but were very, very greasy. So greasy, in fact, that I threw half of mine away. Service was friendly, our orders were promptly prepared, and the overall value was very good. My only complaints were these - no parking, so if you go during peak hours, be prepared to park off-site and walk a bit. Also, the drink area was kind of a mess with water all over the floor and I almost slipped and fell. I will likely try them again, but would probably do take-out rather than eat-in. read more

Stopped in for a quick Hot Italian carryout. I was struck by how CLEAN the restaurant was! Also, with no manager in sight, I watched as employees busied themselves with cleaning and straightening. What a pleasure to watch these young people take such pride in their work! Penn Station is the best sub place in Rochester, if you're looking for toasted subs. For cold cuts, Jimmy John's or Jersey Mike's are better options. But the hand cut fries, fresh lemonade, and absolutely fantastic warm sub options make this place a unique delight. The staff are friendly and helpful as well, always addressing you by name with a smile on their faces. Good customer service truly makes a difference, and this place is no exception. The food is delicious! These sandwiches are highly addictive! Whenever I come back into town I always am craving a trip to Penn Station. The fries here are off-the-charts amazing. They made them fresh, starting with cutting them in the first place. Crispy and salty and perfect, in my fry-loving opinion. The place has such a local atmosphere with memorabilia of the nearby high schools posted on the walls. It's very nostalgic for those who grew up in the area. I echo everything Bre K and Brian G said. The service is terrible and the food is generally poor. There are plenty of better sandwich options in downtown Rochester. It takes far too long for the food to arrive and when it does arrive it is usually sloppily prepared. I had a teriyaki chicken sub that was downright disgusting - greasy and covered in mushrooms, even after I specifically had asked for no mushrooms. Everything is grilled with an enormous amount of oil - this is definitely not a place to go if you are trying to eat remotely healthy. The teenagers working there are equally as frustrating. It's been mentioned many times before in the reviews here, but it warrants mentioning again. They could care less about serving their customers. The manager Bernie was very obnoxious too. When he took my order he was extremely rude and acted as if he was in a hurry to be some place else. When I realized he was a 50 year old man wearing a visor serving sub sandwiches I decided not to say anything back to him - his life was pathetic enough as is. The fact is I have wanted to go here so many times but each time I walk in I cannot bring myself to order. Not one employee is wearing gloves and all of them touch food and the touch themselves, their clothing, money, ect and they never wash their hands. I mean ok if you are cooking raw food you should not be touching prepared food and you should be washing your hands anytime you touch prepared food, I would be surprised people eat here but so many people go to the bathroom and don't wash their hands its not surprising it is at times busy but I will not eat here till they fix this. read more

Hands down the best vegetarian sub I have ever had. The bread is soft yet crispy, the veggies are grilled perfectly, the cold veggies are always fresh. The fries are the best I have ever had, they are made to order and come in a cup, their iced tea is good. The boyfriend and I are here every Friday. There are a lot of teenagers working here but they have always been friendly toward us. We have had a couple of times where the order had something missing but it wasn't a big deal. The experience started with them not taking the check in offer. It was for a free small fry, seems like they could have honored it. This unfortunately has ruined the experience for me. If it was 3 years earlier I would have given Penn Station 4 maybe 5 stars. But it's not, so today I can only give it 3 stars. Why? The Philly Cheese Steaks used to be soooo much better. The meat had more flavor, the portions were larger and the bread was crustier on the outside and tasted like a real Philly hoagie roll. The fresh cut fries used to taste like the fresh cut fries that you would get at the state fair. Times sure have changed. My mom grew up in Philly and knows a good Philly Cheese Steak...... and this aint it. I love the support that they display for the Rochester community, the restaurant is always clean, the service was friendly and prompt and for that I will continue to support the establishment...but not too frequently. read more
