I bought my a son a car in April 2022 and it turned out that there were several things wrong with it. It went bad within 6 months and was undriveable. We ended up having to replace the pistons, water pump and head gasket. What a nightmare. Our mechanic wanted and Initial $4k but could not promise the outcome or if it would be over $4k. Chuck said they were too "busy" to help. They told us the registration was paid for 2022 but when we went to check it was never paid. Never again! I can't believe what I'm reading!! From all these negative reviews, I can only conclude that there must have been a disconnect in the communication. Melissa is a very caring woman who only wants the customer to be completely happy with their purchase. And Chuck, he is such a compassionate man who takes pride in selling only the best used vehicles. I just bought my third car from them and over the many years that I have dealt with them they have been nothing but kind and caring. The whole office is filled with caring people. When you walk through those doors they treat you like family and only want to put you in a vehicle that you feel good about purchasing. They even help people who have less than perfect credit find a car that fits their budget. And Pennington's stands by their vehicles! Over the last 10 years they have sold me some really great cars! If I could rate this place with a 0 star- I WOULD. but anyways, I was referred to Penningtons Auto sales by a family friend. I had mentioned that I was looking to buy a used car and she said that she knew of a place that could help me out. Upon arriving at Pennington's, my friend and I wondered around the used car lot "if you could even call it that" for about a half hour before anyone even approached me to ask if I needed help with anything. It's not like they couldn't see me or anything... because the "lot" isn't even a lot, it's a tiny little parking lot area all the way in the back and behind the other businesses there in the industrial complex that they are located in. Right off the bat I was unimpressed by the selection of cars that I was looking at. I truly thought that I was looking at the overflow area for the service department or something. Eventually a woman came out, i believe her name was Melissa....but I could be wrong, because she purposely removed her name tag shortly after coming out to "help" me. which I thought was extremely suspicious at the time and it wasn't until after our interaction was over, that I realized that she didn't want me to know her name for this very reason- Yelp or BBB. I won't touch on or go into too much detail about our poor experience at Penningtons.... Bottom line, I was very unimpressed by the customer service by that woman, She was extremely rude and condescending right off the bat. She gave me attitude and ( removed her name badge) right after I asked " Do you have any other cars up for selection or is the only lot of cars they had up for sale? Simple question, kindly asked ... But that woman must have been having a bad day because she became rude/nasty from there on. Needless to say/ long story short... my friend and I left Penningtons without purchasing a vehicle. Customer Service and Sales team is amazing. Although, they have no communication with their mechanics and their mechanics suck. They are probably the cheapest, worst mechanics i have ever seen in my life and are completely worthless. Sent my jag in for minimal work and it came out ONE MONTH+ LATER with even MORE problems, the head mechanic apologized and i recieved a check but it did not cover anything and I am very disappointed, car had no lights on the dash when i started it up at their lot after they "repaired it", and right when i pulled off, all the lights came on and my dash looked like a christmas tree, if you have any problems with your vehicle after purchasing it, i would highly recommend you go as far away from Pennington's as possible. read more

Excellent prices, service, and website. They are family owned and put a lot of work into making their used cars feel like and run like new. I found out about this place by word of mouth, they are really honest and I've only heard great things from other buyers. I looked through their website for about 3 weeks until the perfect car for me popped up. I went in 5 minutes before closing time and bought the car, it took about 30 minutes to do all of the paperwork so I'm glad they stayed late to make sure I had wheels to go to work the next day, I bought my used car there 3 years ago and have had zero mechanical problems, just oil changes. I bought a 1997 Honda Accord. I plan to get my next "new to me" used car from them as well. Seems like most dealers out there are not so nice based on yelp reviews. Went to buy a car here on a recommendation. Don't do it! They sold me a car that hadn't been smogged (wasn't told this until AFTER paperwork was signed). Was told to drive it a hundred miles or so to "reset" the monitors. Drove it 100 miles, came in and they said I need to drive it more. Went and wasted another tank of gas and drove back same day to recheck. Nope!!!! Drive some more!!! What?? You sold a car that can't be registered or smog checked. Is that even legal? Answer: NO. I was told they would give me a loaner and one of them would drive it around until it would pass..uh...NO! They wouldn't unwind the deal because "we can't do that" Another lie! It is illegal to sell a car that cant be registered and therefore contract is invalid!! Be aware of what they are selling you. The car drives great but what good does it do me if I can't even legally drive it? What a joke!!!! read more

Bought a KIA from Melissa and her family a couple months ago for a very reasonable price. The service and attention were excellent. We were recommended to buy from them by a large automotive service in Orange that has been around for years and said they have bought many cars from Penningtons. There are literally three auto brokers on the same street as this service location but instead they sent us to Pennington's. Are there problems with the car? Yes a few. I didn't expect something new off the assembly line. It's a used car. It's going to have some wrinkles and aches here and there. We got it with 135K+ miles on it and it works just fine for what we need. Would I recommend Pennington's? Absolutely! It would be my first and hefty recommendation to anyone wanting an affordable used car. The family treated us great and were patient with us while we pondered which car to buy. Went to look at a truck they had advertised on Craigslist, it was in great condition, low miles for the year, but there were a couple things that raised questions, there was condensation in both headlight assemblies, probably the result of power washing under the hood to detail it. Antenna was missing, small amount of damage (dent) on the rear bumper. But mostly there was a small area inside the door jam were the paint didn't look right and was accompanied by a little rust in that area. We asked several times if they knew if it had ever been in an accident, to which they answered "not to their knowledge" And that "the report" doesn't show anything. When we asked about the tags being due, they said they hadn't smogged it yet, but would have that done the next day. We put down a $100 deposit to simply hold it till the next day. That night, we found that exact truck, at Pennington's advertised on CarGuru, same pictures everything, only on CarGuru it stated the vehicle had THREE accidents reported. The next day, Pennington called us to let us know they went ahead and replaced both headlight assemblies, installed the antenna, had the smog complete, and it was ready to go. When we confronted them with the information about the accidents reported on CarGuru they stated "we didn't get the report on that vehicle yet" which was contradictory to "it doesn't show anything" They said they would obtain the auto check report, and get a report from the DMV. So we waited, then they started to blow up our cell phones trying to contact us. When I called them back, they confirmed it did in fact have three "minor" accidents reported, which were all repaired, and no frame damage. Of course how would I verify this. And was the dent on the rear bumper part of one of those three accidents? Was it four? Anyway, I felt they honestly didn't know about the accidents, but how do you "not know" a vehicle history if this is what you do everyday. Once I told them I was no longer intetested in the vehicle, seems they couldn't comprehend that I didn't want a truck with a 3 accident history that was going to follow the vehicle around for the rest of it's life. They became a little too anxious about convincing me "what a great deal it was" Even went as far as "take it for a few days, drive it around, have your mechanic check it over before you decide" Wait...What? Your going to just give me the keys and say "here, take it"? I'm sure I would have had to fill out all the paperwork and "purchase" it. Then be introduced to their "return policy" if I indeed decide I don't want it. I had THREE people trying to convince me to take it, all with "why don't you want it" "These are really hard to find" Well, that's good, then they shouldn't have any problem finding another buyer, just isn't going to be me. That said, it was a great truck, and they addressed all our concerns on the issues we had, going as far as replacing parts, and I honestly got the impression they had no idea about the accidents... until I found them. I bought an 01 acura in April 2013 I put 3k down and have been paying $250 a month. a few weeks after I got the car I realized it was leaking oil, Now 8 months later my transmission is out. It sucks that I had to pay $4500 for a car I could only use for 8 months, now my only choice if for my mechanic brother in law to pay off the car and keep it. Was looking to sell my car and first thought of Carmax. I put that into google maps to see where the closest one to me was, and noticed this little red dot appear down the street from my office. After further investigating what it was, it turned out to be Pennington's. I checked their website and gave them a call and after work I drove over to get my car appraised. They were respectful, thorough, quick and within 20-30 minutes I had an appraisal on what they may be able to offer me for my car. Once we finished talking, they suggested that I do still go to Carmax and see what they would offer, and they may be albe to even go above the carmax price. Went to carmax, and had a terrible experience. Some strange circumstances added to the frustration such as an appraiser getting into an accident with the car he was test driving/appraising, leading to longer than usual wait times. After 2 hours of sitting around it was finally done, and was only slightly higher than what Pennington's offered. I took the offer back to Pennington's and told them of my experience and told them they don't need to go above the carmax offer, they just need to match it and I would be a happy camper. Within 20 minutes, I had a check in hand for the carmax price and was on my way. Keep them in mind if you get into a similar scenario and help support the small local businesses in the area. They are a honest and hard working bunch and will treat you like a customer, not just a sale. read more

It took me a month to find a first car for my son. The Yelp reviews here looked good enough to give them a try. They were super nice, no-pressure and had a very clean car that was actually under Kelly Blue Book retail price (different from most ads I've seen). Since they also have a detail shop and their own mechanics, everything was spotless under the hood. They were firm on the price so we didn't have to go through lengthy negotiations. What I liked was a $150 option to return the car in 3 days (cooling off period). This gave me piece of mind and the ability to have my own mechanic look at the car should I choose to do so. For them it was $150 bonus for having a good car. We've put about 500 miles on it in two weeks and nothing's gone wrong other than a broken door handle (cost me $15 to buy, 5 minutes to install). They provided the Vehicle History Report, and disclosed the car came from an auction. Car Max doesn't keep cars under $10k or over 100K miles. Anything can happen to 10-year old cars with 97K miles and new drivers, so you always have to perform due diligence when shopping. When looking for that high mileage/low cost car, you have to find someone to trust. The car condition could be a toss of the dice not knowing when the timing belt, fuel pump and other components that are designed to go 100k miles will fail. (Look at the Consumer Reports reliability records to pick a good make/model). If it doesn't fail in the first month / 1,000 miles, the seller was OK. I'll update my review again after my 30-day warranty. Anything that happens several months after that have to be accepted as used cars go. It's comforting to work with a good group of people who appear honest, decent, and trustworthy. I will come back with my next purchase. read more
