Peony Kitchen in Bellevue has an amazing crispy duck with thin pancakes, grilled preserved lemons, veggies, and duck sauce. It is even completely deboned besides the drumsticks, which makes it easy for kids (or spouse, haha). I got this a little while ago on a Saturday night mid-pandemic and it was empty there, so go support them if you can. Leftover tip: reheat duck in 350 degree oven for 5 minutes and then flip it to broil so the skin sizzles but don't let it burn. This duck is sliced thin so it doesn't take long. read more

I want to like this place. I really do. I'm always a huge advocate for making Chinese food feel expensive. Panda Express doesn't equal to Chinese food. I came for my friend's birthday surprise. Staff were super friendly and flexible with our requests. Store has beautiful decor - totally Instagram worthy. Amazing bathroom (I actually accidentally knocked off a whole glass of water to my dress, and their bathroom allowed me to fix myself.) there were a couple dishes that came out very slowly. It was a weekday evening, so I'm not quite sure what's wrong. Food? It's ok. It's not awful, but it's not great either. The food is always fantastic here, but the service times vary drastically. I've had both great and terrible experiences which keep me from giving Peony a 5 star rating. The price is expensive, but I travel to Asia quite a bit and I find the food quality here better than the best of the best I've had in Shanghai and Yokohama, so I have to say its worth it. Sure, I wish it was cheaper, but if a premium price gets me this creative menu with excellent food, then how can I really complain? If you want to impress people with a fantastic Chinese dinner and a very inviting atmosphere, then this is the only game in town in the Seattle metropolitan area. The orange chicken is amazing, as is the Mongolian beef. Neither here nor there on the cucumber salad, it was good but I was imagining din tai fung cucumber salad. You get a lot of food, and could definitely share entrees family style. We wanted to try a few so we shared. They can take your order at the table, or you can order through the QR code for touchless ordering and checkout. They do have a parking garage, free to patrons, or you can park nearby and walk. The dishes here are actually not bad and pretty creative, but they are just too salty to me that this place does not really attract me. The reason to me to come back is always based on the group's decision. I do not really understand how to clarify the service here since it seems the server did everything fast that we requested and we could also find the server easily; nevertheless, the server did not really respond us in words, which made me confused whether the server was listening or no. Back at Peony again this week. Had the most satisfying hot and sour soup. Really, the best in Seattle and the Eastside. Big grilled shrimp and crunchy rice crispy, perfect 'meal' on a cool fall day. We ordered few dishes and the Duck and salt pepper shrimp were really tasty One thing really surprised me was how unprofessional the hostess was. Beginning with making reservation, I noticed she was inpatient and little rude. When we arrived at the restaurant she was cold face and indifferent. The craziest at the same time the most hilarious moment was, when we were ready to order but for whatever reason we couldn't find a waitress nearby for a while, and when the hostess happened to walk by, I quickly said to her that we were ready to order. You would expect something like "sure I will let the waitress know". Instead she appeared to get offended and said to us "hey! I am not a waitress" then rage left. That's the wtf moment. I had not really heard too much about this place before coming here for an early dinner. I didn't even realize the place was there. Inside, it's really pretty. Love the wood and all the old school touches, like the really old phone and the murals on the brick wall. There are some semi private areas, if you have a group with you, too. The food...we ordered a mixture of dishes. Spicy chicken was spicy, but maybe not that much other flavors to it. Eggplant was a bit blah. The lettuce cups with the duck were tasty and maybe the favorite. Big portions and we over ordered and took quite a bit in leftovers home. I will have to come back and order more carefully next time. Went to the Happy Hour and ended up ordering almost every item on the Happy Hour menu - salt and pepper chicken, sweet chili prawns, shrimp dumplings, cold plate combo, pan-fried Kurobuta pork buns, mu shu chicken tacos, braised string beans. Very awkward when you are buying lunch for a few others. Sure, the waiter finally came around after 15 minutes and agreed to "actually" take our order but he seemed rather annoyed that he had to do this. And the there is an 18 percent AUTOMATIC tip. I usually tip 20 percent but didn't this time. I get the required 18 percent with a group of six or more. But not for everyone. 3.5 Stars for the food. Up'ed to 4 for presentation, decor, and service. My first visit was terrible. It was early on right after they opened and it was madness with people everywhere trying out the new place. While first impressions are key, it doesn't mean it represents everything. So I've tried it a few times since and glad I did. Many things stand out here. First, the decor. The furniture, the quality of the tables, chairs, the big square bar, the art, the mini statues and such all present well and you feel like you're glad you came out to visit Peony. It's best to dine here with a larger group, because of course, that is how Chinese food is best presented and enjoyed. Make a reservation and request the private rooms they have. They are quaint, and perfect for a grand feast. I can't say enough how the presentation of food and drinks are here and even the quality of their teapots. I won't describe all the dishes, just look at the pictures. The Big Rib was my favorite. This is more new age Chinese food cooking and Dana and her kitchen does it well. Beware of the sleazy and unethical business practices at this restaurant. They automatically charge an 18% service charge if you dine in. Although this charge is mentioned in fine print in the menu, 99% of people will not notice it and be shocked by it when they get their bill. This service charge is on top of food that tastes no different than your typical Chinese takeout food. And this service charge is on top of food prices that are highly overpriced. And when you get the check, they expect a tip on top of the service charge. Oh, and the food is not freshly made. I ordered my dish and literally received it within less than two minutes of ordering. Basically, this is a takeout Chinese restaurant masquerading as a fine dining Chinese restaurant. read more

I read several reviews before coming here and despite people claiming there is a tunnel to China underneath the kitchen, I knew better. This place represent exactly what's ruined Bellevue. This is a trendy hang out spot, not authentic Chinese cuisine. When I talked to my server, he really left me with the impression that the place was not about food and that the flavor of everything is much lighter than you would expect. Nothing is 5 star hot and most dishes are not even seasoned well. I couldn't decide between a few dishes, so I went with the most photographed item, Crispy Garlic Chicken. I was not impressed. The chicken was dry and didn't have any distinct flavor and the sauce was a watered down orange/tsao sauce. The portion wasn't that big, especially for the price. I will tip my hat to the Hot and Sour soup. Some places focus on the sour, but this had a rich chicken stock flavor with a tangy bite from the vinegar. The service was a bit slow, but extremely polite. I'm glad I checked the place out, but doubt I'll be back, it was overprices, under seasoned and didn't even come with an appetizer or cookie. Sorry, Chinese lunch specials shouldn't cost $15, then cut all the corners. I should have just made the drive into central Bellevue, Best Wok has better food for less money. It may not be trendy, but when I eat, it's all about cuisine I'm not trying to look cool, be cool or be near anyone attempting either. *Note* It appears that Peony no longer does the brunch buffet, so this review may not be super relevant- but I will update once I've been back for dinner or their updated brunch. We tried Peony's brunch buffet because my friend won a free brunch for 2. We got there around 11 am on a Sunday (Dec 30th), and oddly enough was the only table to be seated. During the time we dined, we saw only two other parties- not sure if this was telling of their brunch concept failure, or perhaps the time/day? It was a self-service dim sum set up, everything was hot/fresh- not a spectacular selection, but decent. Congee, fried chicken, dumplings, veggies, noodles, etc. The food was good, not terribly oily/greasy like most of the dim sum places around- but really lacked variety. I believe it would have been priced at $29.95 which is really steep if you think about what it costs to eat dim sum in ID per person (and walk away very full.) Tried this place during a trip to Seattle. The place is ok for Chinese food. Their food is more like "new Chinese style", instead of traditional food. The taste is good but nothing impressed me. That is the main reason why I put 4 stars instead of 5. It is hard to tell what kind of Chinese food it is doing (more Sichuan style or southern China?). Easy calling in and take out! There's 25% off for takeout until the end of the month. Food was ready in about 20 minutes from calling in the order. I tried the 5 flavor beef, crispy garlic chicken, peony chow fun, and eggplant and green beans. Each item was well packed for safe travel home. Beef was soft and tender but mostly onions. The chicken was tasty but doesn't match up to Bai Tong's crispy garlic chicken. Chow fun had shrimp, scallops and calamari. Delicious! Eggplant and green beans were good, but a little mushy. I was so excited about this place after reading the menu and got my boyfriend equally hyped about this place as well. We came here on a Monday for lunch when he was in town. We made the drive from North Seattle over here. We got here pretty close to 11, it was pretty much empty except for another table. That being said, we got seated in a nice booth next to the open windows. The decor is super trendy (a little weird for my taste). Our waiter seemed nice but was really really weird. For some reason he was talking super quietly, to the point where neither of us could really hear him. Strange guy. We ordered the Whole 5 Spice Crispy Duck, the Tung Po Pork Belly, and the 5 Flavor Soup Dumplings. The soup dumplings came out first. Super overrated in my opinion. I couldn't really differentiate between the different flavors except for the cheese. The cheese flavored one was good and I love the cheesy flavor. $14 bucks is a little steep, seeing as how it's more expensive than Din Tai Fung and def. not as good. The five spice crispy duck was SO delicious. We love Peking Duck! I love that it came with the flatter pancakes instead of the fatter bun ones that are so much more filling. The candied lemons were so good, my boyfriend ate them whole. The Tung Po Pork Belly was so tender and delicious. The guy who brought it out cut it into 4 pieces for us (he gave us an option of 6 pieces), and the meat was falling apart it was so tender. We had ordered a bowl of white rice to go with everything, but our waiter never brought it out. But it's not like we really needed it. I did have to tell him to take it off our bill. Honestly the food was expensive. And this is coming from the couple that usually spends a LOT on food and over orders. That piece of pork belly for $25? Eh, def. too small. The duck at $43 was expensive in my opinion, although worth it. The price compares to Peking Gourmet Inn in VA and wasn't as good. We didn't mind the gratuity that was already included in our bill. Waiter told us up front and we already knew about it, so it wasn't a big deal to us. He was pretty good, but still talked so quietly. Finally I just leaned in closer to him when he was asking us about our meal at the end. I really did like the food here, but I wouldn't drive all the way out here for it. From the crab and lobster dish to the dumplings..Everything was delicious and the service was on point. We wanted to try everything on the menu but obviously wasnt able to. So we decided to come back the next night to try different stuff. And again the service was on point. Everyone was friendly and the food came out promptly. The second time around, we ordered the squid ink rice, sweet and sour chicken, duck, curry, pork belly and fried fish. We didnt have a dish that wasnt good. Everything had flavor and was seasoned perfectly. This is not your typical Chinese food restaurant. The food is high quality, delicious and the presentation is phenomenal. The restaurant is decorated nicely and its very clean. The staff are also dressed well and again the service was top notch. They checked on our table often to make sure everything was ok and filled our drinks whenever it got low. I highly recommend this place if you live Washington or just visiting. What's most striking about the food is the presentation--everything is plated really beautifully, but the presentation is far better than the flavor. We worked with someone at the restaurant to agree on the party's menu the week before and yet somehow it took forever to get our food. While I understand that the kitchen could get backed up on a Saturday night, we had essentially preordered and they knew when we would be arriving. Also, you would think that for a large group in one of the private rooms that the service would be more attentive, but it wasn't. Just to put it out there - yes, Peony Kitchen is expensive. But it doesn't deserve the rating it has because of this fact. It's totally worth it, and totally legit. Each dish is beautifully prepared and the service is fantastic. The space is so large that even if it's crowded, you're likely to sit within 15-20 minutes. My friend and I decided to order the five-flavor xiao long bao, jellyfish with scallion pesto, fish ma po tofu, and tung po pork belly in clay pot. The jellyfish was SO flavorful - a little oily, but so tasty. The five-flavor XLB was really fun, with different flavors like seafood, ginger, and even cheese. The fish ma po tofu was SO yummy and surpassed my expectations for the ma po tofu - the fish was a great touch, as simple as it was. The tung po pork belly definitely had a classy presentation, but I wasn't too blown away by the dish itself. This is mostly because I'm not a huge pork belly fan. Came here with 2 other people. Waste of thyme. Fresh sprigs of thyme were used as a garnish for the bbq pork and squid ink fried rice. So weird but it did complement it to a certain extent when used properly. We ordered the bbq pork, squid ink seafood noodle, truffle scallops, giant soup dumpling and squid ink fried rice. Bbq pork wasn't crispy but was marinated and cooked well. Squid ink seafood noodle did have a creamy taste to it but didn't enhance the dish further same could be said about the fried rice covered in cheese with fried crispy onions on the side. Truffle scallops were seared and covered in white truffle oil and topped with caviar on a bed of sliced scallions. I wished there was a bit of sweetness to it like an addition of mirin or something. The giant soup dumpling is not filled with much meat and the dough was too thick. It is more for Instagram purposes than taste. Squid ink fried rice was with short grained white rice covered in squid ink and fried with onions and topped with melted cheese and crispy onions. It was unique in terms of color, but there wasn't anything outstanding about the taste of the dish. We ended the night with pumpkin custard donuts which were very good. The creme brulee trip was decent however they were lacking the vanilla bean flecks that I find essential to a good creme brulee. It had a matcha, chocolate and vanilla flavored.
