Where have I been? Just discovered this place recently and was very pleasantly surprised. There was a wait line but they serve fast and bring on 12th on the wait list took only 20 minutes. The space is open, bright and clean. We ordered The black fish fillet slices in pickled cabbage soup- it was very tasty. Huge portion for family style sharing. The tang from the pickled cabbage was very appetizing. It paired well with rice. The fried sliced potatoes with sliced pork and chili dry pot was also very good. Not a whole lot of pork mostly sliced potatoes with very good flavor so I didn't feel like I needed to have more pork. It tasted like the potato slices were deep fried and cooked in flavorful umami garlic and chili sauce. Another dish that's great with steamed rice. We also enjoyed the chewy bean jelly noodles in spicy sauce. It is quite refreshing as there is a nice tang to the spicy sauce. We ended the dinner with brown sugar ice jelly. It has some dried cranberries, a few pieces of tiny mochi, and almond flakes. It was delicious, and not too sweet. We look forward to be back to try the other dishes.
This has quickly become one of my favorite Chinese restaurants for spicy food. I've been here twice now and enjoyed every dish I tried. I've come for both lunch and dinner, usually shortly after they open, and never had to wait. Just looking at the crowd, you can tell this is an authentic place. As someone who travels to China frequently, this restaurant definitely meets my expectations. The Hunan-style spicy dishes really satisfy my craving for bold heat and flavor. I've tried the stone pot spicy tofu with meatballs, 梅菜扣肉 (braised pork with preserved vegetables), spicy lamb, stone pot black pepper beef, stinky tofu, and the fried oyster mushrooms. I loved all of them. These are the kind of dishes where you can easily finish a big bowl of rice--and still want more even when your belly is already full. I'll definitely be back to try more dishes. Service was prompt, and one small detail really stood out to me: during my first visit, they actually replenished the napkins mid-meal. With spicy food and the inevitable runny nose, that level of thoughtfulness is appreciated!
Definitely not a restaurant for me. All good reviews and we had high hopes but I am very picky...no pork, no bones, no weird body parts, no frogs or chicken feet...we ordered chicken in chili sauce appetizer. There is a small picture (after a struggle to download) but no description. It came out as chopped up chicken parts-skin and bones included. Good thing the kitchen gets working on the order while we are trying to pick out a main dish because this is all we will be ordering tonight! We were happily greeted and were seated immediately. The menu is on your phone after scanning a QR code but there is not an apparent free wifi so, loading on my phone was difficult. The wait staff are bustling and not easily accessible to ask questions. The portions look to be very large and most of the seats are filled with happily eating patrons so, this is a great place if you like these types of dishes.
TLDR: Authentic Hunan Chinese food in Bellevue, menu has a good variety and comes with big shareable portions. If you can't eat spicy, I wouldn't recommend. Also be prepared for a little language barrier if you don't speak Chinese. Food: The food here tastes pretty authentic to me - lots of wok fried, spicy, and heavy/oily dishes that pair best with white rice. We ordered less spicy, but were still sweating and needing to drink water and tea. The portion here are pretty large, enough to share family style. My favorite dish was the fish with sichuan peppercorns, coming with lots of fish, glass noodles, and the signature numbing spice flavor. Price: For the size of the portion I would say the price is fair. Expect to pay $20+ for each dish Service: Service here was good. Servers were proactive in refilling our tea pots and providing extra napkins. The staff primarily speaks Chinese so be prepared for a language barrier, although the QR menu does have an English version Note: As many people shared, be prepared to wait. We came in around ~6pm on a Sunday so peak time and the waitlist was around 6 parties ahead of us and only grew larger when we finally got seated
Ordering is challenging. They give you an ipad and you need to scroll and try to remember what you've seen. Ordered medium spicy (2 chili) and it was too hot for my other. It was almost too hot for me, and I love spicy food (usually order 3 star Thai). We had pepper beef and stir fry lamb. Both dishes were generous in portion and had fresh ingredients. Besides the meat the dishes had celery, onion and red chili (in looking at the pictures thought it was bell pepper - not!). Pretty good flavor. Quite a lot of oil.
I'm pretty sure every single diner was Asian when we visited, which is a good sign! There was no wait around 6:30pm on a Wednesday evening. Service was quick and friendly. These dishes are QUITE spicy, so I'd recommend adjusting the spice level if you can't tolerate spice. We ordered a lamb dish, chou doufu (stinky tofu), Hunan Style Sauteed Pork With Rice, and Sweet Fermented Rice Soup With Mini Sweet Dumplings for dessert. - The chou doufu was exactly what I would've wanted, and the spice level was high but hit the spot. - The lamb, though simple, was yummy and clean, and I loved the veggies it came with. - The pork with rice was disappointing because we really didn't get much meat - the rice was about 80% of the bowl. If it weren't for this, I'd give this spot a 5. - The rice soup with sweet dumplings was HUGE, and had a really interesting fermented flavor. The little tang yuan-like sesame balls were tasty, and I wish there'd been more. Parking was easy, as there's lot right in front. The portions are massive, though I wouldn't get a dish that is "over rice" again. Would return if I were craving some very spicy food.
I came to Shaoshan Impression on a Wednesday afternoon to meet a friend, and he recommended this spot as a family favorite. I was definitely impressed! We ordered the Eggplant in Chili Sauce, Sliced Pork and Cucumber in Garlic Sauce, and Hunan-Style Braised Pork Cubes with Jelly Noodle. The sliced pork and cucumber dish is personally my favorite; it tasted sweet and smooth with the garlic sauce. The eggplant in chili sauce was a nice, acquired taste since it was my first time trying cold eggplant. The pork cubes are something I grew up eating, while the Jelly Noodle is something I've never tried, but they're thick and chewy. On top of that, the interior of Shaoshan is very clean and gorgeous since the restaurant opened up recently. The service was excellent, as the workers took every step they could to clean our table, fill our water, and ensure the food was up to our standards. Can't think of any criticism, would love to take other friends and family here in the future!
We visited Shaoshan Impression with some friends for a Sunday lunch, hoping for a great meal after a thoroughly disappointing visit to a place in Seattle the previous night serving similar cuisine. We came right at opening, 11am, and were one of the first parties seated. The restaurant does get quite crowded as the lunch hours pass - by the time we left around 12:30, there was a small wait for tables. Before ordering, the waitstaff brings over a carafe of hot tea. It's very well insulated, keeping the tea piping hot even at the end of the meal. The restaurant is otherwise kept impeccably clean, which combined with the windows and bright lighting, creates a welcoming atmosphere. Each table offers a QR code menu for ordering. Unfortunately, the restaurant does not supply wifi and several members of our party had trouble getting reception through the thick walls, making things a bit frustrating to start. The restaurant really should consider offering guest wifi if they insist on their QR ordering system. After ordering, waitstaff confirms the order and asks for any heat level adjustments and if the party has any allergens. We went with everything at the standard heat levels. House Special Grilled Fish (Extra Spicy) ($45.99) - The fish has a mild buttery flavor, and is cooked on the tougher side making it somewhat difficult to spoon apart into smaller pieces. The stew it's in is filled with goodies - white beech mushroom, wood ear, tofu, spam, konjac, peanuts, napa, potato, etc. I especially love the super bouncy wide sweet potato noodles and the cubes of konjac. There's just a whole plethora of ingredients with wildly different textures. For a three spicy dish, it's surprisingly not that bad - there's even a bit of Sichuan peppercorn included to help numb against any incoming pain. We had plenty of leftovers for this dish, enough to fill an entire aluminum half tray. Let me just say that day 2 with this dish is an entirely different experience. The chilis have more time to bloom in the soup and really amps up the spicy levels. There was so much left over that it took the two of us almost an entire week to finish the rest (albeit we boosted it with homemade chicken stock to dilute and use as noodle broth). (5/5) Steamed Egg with Minced Pork ($17.99) - I didn't eat much of this since it was ordered specifically for one of the pickier eaters in our group. From my single bite, I could tell that the egg had the perfect cook, being steamed until it's tender but not tough. On top, they dress the dish with sesame oil and some very flavorful umami-forward ground pork. Braised Pork with Green Peppers (Medium Spicy) ($26.99) - This is a super flavorful dish with the umami and aromatic fragrance levels boosted through the roof with tons of doubanjiang, tender green peppers, ginger, and garlic. They include plenty of pork belly, sliced rather thinly with tons of tender fat and meat. At two spicy the dish isn't too bad at all, although some other people in our party took it home and apparently the next day the food was blistering hot. (5/5) Stir-Fried Cauliflowers (Medium Spicy) ($21.99) - I love this dish. The cauliflower is cooked with still a bit of a bite, then is mixed in with pork skin, cloves of garlic, and jalapeno. I especially love the fried pork skin. It's almost like chicharrones with the super crackly crisp. (5/5) Steamed Rice ($2) - It's rice, cooked well with each grain pretty distinct. Perhaps a little on the dry side but obviously goes well with everything else. Especially needed to help tamper down some of the heat. I was really impressed with the food served at Shaoshan Impression. It's by far the best restaurant for Hunan cuisine, heck, one of the best Chinese restaurants in general, I've been to since moving to the area about a year ago. Restroom - Two rooms, one for men, one for women. The men's room doesn't have a changing table as one of my friends unfortunately discovered.
This review is overdue- we went to celebrate lunar new year and even then they were efficient enough that we didnt have to wait too long for a table. We ordered way too much for 2 but i wanted to try everything and really, ordering extra is just meal prep right? Everything was great with a classic taste, nothing was notably spicy though. The fish was a little too alcoholic tasting for my liking but everything else was fantastic (and oily as heck, as it should be)
I am a fan. The food here is so delicious and service is fast. The restaurant is clean and I love their efficiency. I highly recommend any of their dishes. Fair warning, dishes are spicy but they can tone it down at your request. The only downside is they don't take reservations. Wait time can get long during peak hours.

I love all the dishes I ordered: Must-order tea leaf prawns! Crispy whole shrimp with edible shells, fragrant crunchy tea leaves mixed in, lightly seasoned with scallion and chili. Sweet juicy shrimp meat paired with unique roasted tea scent, super flavorful and crunchy all around. A rustic Cantonese wok stir-fry: Sautéed Streaky Pork with Lyophyllum (Deer Antler Mushrooms). Lean-and-fat marbled pork is wok-fried to render aromatic lard, developing subtle caramelized sweetness. Dried deer antler mushrooms absorb meat gravy to deliver a distinctive springy, woody chewiness unique to this wild fungi. Whole garlic, spring onion and fresh red pepper introduce bright herbal and peppery accents, while restrained dark soy glaze unifies all components into a deeply umami-forward savory masterpiece, ideal pairing for plain steamed rice. One of my first choices Chinese spicy food restaurants! Most of the dishes here are great and authentic but be careful for some of them are not good. Free parking here. Recommend the rice with soy sauce soup, clear bean noodles cold dishes, spicy fried chicken, and shredded potatoes. read more

Absolutely amazing spot--I'm already craving it again just days later! I came here for brunch and was seriously impressed by both the food and the cozy, welcoming vibe. I ordered the Stir-Fried Sliced Potatoes & Pork with Chili Peppers, which was perfectly balanced--tender, savory, and just the right amount of heat. The Szechuan Style Crispy Chicken was a standout too--crispy, bold, and addictively spicy in all the right ways. Everything hit the spot. Flavorful, satisfying, and memorable. Can't wait to come back and try more! read more

Very authentic Chinese food in redmond. Inside was nicely decorated and clean. Service was good. Complimentary tea is served to help wash down spice and oil. Lamb was nice and tender while green bean pork was packed with flavor. Would definitely come back if I ever stop by redmond again. read more

We (wifey and I) showed up just before they opened (5pm) at 450pm for dinner on Saturday (no reservation). There were two other parties of two waiting behind us before they opened. We were quickly seated, provided tea and more tissues (you'll need these, unless you're a tank and can handle every spicy flavour in the universe). You order via ChowBus on a QR code on your table. We ordered 4 dishes and 2 bowls of rice, as well as asked for two glasses of ice water (it's so spicy holy). Verdict: Decently legit. There's a reason it's popular - lots of Chinese (Mandarin) conversations around me - I didn't spot a single non-Chinese customer in the whole restaurant. Unsurprisingly, when we left at 545pm, it was packed. Despite arriving extremely hungry, the portion sizes were massive, and we ended up taking three of the dishes as leftovers. See pictures for details. We got stinky tofu, meat + mushrooms, fish dish, and a Hunan pork dish. All were tasty - the missus' fav was also my fav: the meat+mushroom dish. None of the food was too oily or greasy, but dang, you'd have to be insanely good at tolerating spice, if it didn't hit the spicy spot for you. Service was extremely courteous and attentive. Never had to worry about empty tea or water, or even napkins! They even replaced our fish dish since when they were serving the rice bowl it slipped and they dropped the rice into the fish dish (oops). They profusely apologized and replaced the fish dish (which hadn't yet been eaten yet). Overall yeah I get it. This place is decent. I'd go back. read more
New-ish Hunan style Chinese restaurant in the area of Bellevue near the Asian Family Market. Went on a Sunday night and managed so snag one of the last small tables. People coming in later had to wait, although the big tables in the back were open. Mid-sized, bright interior. Menu is full of spicy Hunan dishes. Your order via your phone and scanning the QR code. Asked for less oil and less spice, but there were still decent amount of oil and plenty spicy. Started with the century egg appetizer which wasn't too spicy. The cabbage dry pot was decent and had a little bit of pork, and also not too spicy. The cold mixed noodles definitely got a spicy kick to it though, and so did the stir-fried lamb with Chinese celery. Bold, spicy and salty flavors. Definitely needed to drink a lot of tea downing the food. They serve up the food pretty quickly. Service was good. Was $80ish with tax and tip overall for 2 people, with a bit of leftovers. 4 stars. read more

Tried to do a pickup here and honestly... never again. They told me it'd be ready in 20 minutes, but it ended up taking 40. I was literally standing at the entrance for almost 20 minutes. I asked the staff once and they said "almost ready," then just... nothing. No updates, no "it's coming," no eye contact. I followed up again, they checked, came back out, and still didn't say a single word. When I finally paid, there wasn't even a "sorry for the wait" or a simple "thanks." Just silent. And the food? Pathetic portion size. Paid $27 before tax for pork knuckle and got like... a few sad pieces. Honestly felt like a joke. Overall: long wait, zero communication, and tiny portions. The waitress greeted us and asked us how many, then sat us down right away. This place was 85% full when we entered, and nearly everyone dining here is chinese. A pot of hot tea was served right away, and there is a bar code on the table for you to scan to see the menu and place an order online. There are 4-5 waiter/waitress in the restaurant and they all look extremely busy. The restaurant is super loud like an authentic Chinese restaurant where nobody cares about how loud they are. They don't place any music here and there is a mix of chatters in Chinese, phone ringing sound, and the sound of the servers rolling the carts to grab the dirty dishes. There is a queue at the door around 6:35pm. And as a water/tea bucket, I finished the first pot of hot tea and they gave me a fancier tea pot. The tea tasted more concentrated this time and slightly more bitter, which is perfect for my taste. The decor here is interesting... They have nice paintings on the wall, but there is red Chinese style roof in the restaurant ceiling. Sort of like Asian fashion? Modernized Chinese restaurant, I'd say. Our first dish came at 6:45pm. The Hunan style sauteed pork with rice (small spicy) 湖南肉湯泡飯 was delicious with pork, red bell pepper, garlic, green onion, and douchi. It reminds me of our fav dish from Fan Tang Asian Cafe in Kirkland, Thai Chili Beef Stir fry 小炒黃牛肉蓋碼飯. They are very similar, but they don't top it with tons of cilantro here like they do in fan tang. Also the portion size is much more generous. With 50 cents extra, you get much more rice that's enough to feed 2. The sauteed black pepper beef in stone pot (medium spicy) 石鍋黑椒牛肉 came at 6:54pm, and it was too spicy for me. I haven't had anything spicy for a while so my tolerance is also quite bad right now. I also just realized why another table asked for tons of iced water earlier... They do have really spicy stuff here, not to mention this is only medium spicy. It was good, but it's also too spicy for me. Then later my husband told me the waitress actually came to ask if we wanna make it less spicy when I was using the bathroom and he said yes..... So it's actually more spicy than what I had *sweat*!!! So even though there is a default spiciness level for each dish, you could still ask for customization so that was nice. They have a basic bathroom with one toilet (one per gender), so there might be a queue when multiple people got the spiciness attack. Overall I had a great experience here. Our total was close to $60 after everything, but we also bagged half of our food since we just can't finish. The dishes were delicious and the portion sizes for the ones I ordered were generous. They also don't charge for tea like an authentic Chinese place. Btw if you died from eating spicy food here, you might wanna head over to moge tee for an iced milk tea to release yourself from suffering. Ps. I've read from other reviews about small portions, so I guess it might be a hit or miss and we just got lucky with ours(?). Pro tips: 1. Come before 7pm at least (preferably earlier). The queue is crazy at 7pm. 2. Ask for a glass of iced water if you aren't ready for the spicy attack. read more
We got 5 dishes: - Yellow croaker in garlic sauce on steel grill - Sautéed pork with green pepper - Stir fried green beans - Stone pot black pepper beef - Hunan style sautéed pork with rice Everything was super good. I especially liked the hunan style sautéed pork with rice. But beware that if you don't adjust the spice it is naturally quite spicy, so we went for mild spice the second time round. I really enjoyed the change of taste from the other Chinese restaurants in the area, most of which serve SiChuan food. read more

First time here and was an awesome experience! Loved their food and very flavorful! The steamed prawns were definitely the bomb! We only ordered the NOT spicy in the menu. We had eggplant, steamed shrimp, and fried rice. Overall, if the fried rice is good most likely everything else is delicious. The shrimp was definitely the best, and we'll always order that. Funny enough, my mom was only interested in the cooking stainless steel the shrimp was in. She kept adding waiters where they got the cooker lol. A few friends and I tried out this place for lunch. I was impressed with the food and service. When I walked into the store, I was promptly greeted and seated. Our food came quickly and they were mindful that we ordered dessert and that came after our meal. They were very attentive. Like when we finished our meal, they changed plates for us to enjoy our desserts. The food was surprising good. But as we know Chinese food is always a lot of oil . I did enjoy all the food! The serving team was courteous and service was fast. This restaurant is new to the block and has good natural light and wood PNW theme. The kitchen is clean and organized. There are sitting booths, round and square tables to accommodate. Food is Asian portion sized. You can order several dishes to try without being overwhelmed and having to pack it to go. First time visiting this new place nearby. Service was very good, at least at this time - 5 PM. A pot of hot Jasmine tea was served right away and being refilled frequently. QR code ordering system was efficient. Dishes arrived fast. I ordered eggplants in chili sauce (cold) 涼拌茄子, Hunan style fried stinky tofu (長沙臭豆腐), and sautéed pork belly with green chili pepper (農家小炒肉). They were all flavorful and tasty, a bit on the salty side but that's as expected for Hunan or Sichuan cuisines. Will come back again! read more

This restaurant has comfortable seating, a clean environment, excellent service, fresh ingredients, and an extensive authentic menu. We tried multiple dishes and loved the Hunan-style Stinky Tofu, Sautéed Tofu with Meatballs, Preserved Egg With Pepper, and Signature Spicy Frog. read more
