Just got back from there. I have never left a negative review on here until now. I went in to get a new tire. I wanted the ones I already had but the salesperson said all he had in stock were 3 brands - all top name brands. I ask him the price of the cheapest one. He said $119, which is close to what I paid for another tire not too long ago, so I said fine and went with that. In the meantime I tried to get online to their website to double check that because the reason I went there originally was because last night I looked at their inventory online and it was there. Couldn't get online in the store. Later, he comes out and says that my other tire has a big bump in it and I should change that one too. Fine. I go to pay and the salesperson said that they didn't have the cheaper tires in stock and that he gave me the most expensive but made a price adjustment to make up for it. I take out $240 only to hear him say my price is $375! I asked him about the pricing and he denies having said $119 for the cheaper tires. He said they were $138. I KNOW I did NOT hear $138! Those prices aren't even close in sound that I made a mistake in hearing it. Not to mention I had a whole reason WHY I went with a $119 tire. And now the tires are already on, I had 2 bum tires so I can't drive out of there, I'm stuck paying $143 per tire. I go home, go to the website and see the following: 1. The original tires I wanted at $100 (and the same ones I already had on my car) ARE in stock. 2. The salesperson did me NO favor of adjusting the price. The discount was an advertised special. I wish I did not bring my vehicle here. I spent 2 Plus hours from my appointment until finally seeing a mechanic. A few days later, I go to pick up my car, being told everything is fixed. Pay 950 Plus dollars to find all warning lights are still on. It's a few days later and I'm calling in every few hours to get an update. Finally, I get "the break light keeps blinking but the mechanic doesn't know what it is" I decided I will cut my losses and take the vehicle elsewhere. I go to pick up the vehicle and after driving away it's a lot worse than I thought. The vehicle is still making strange sounds when driving all the warning lights are still coming on. Took my car here to fix a squeak and replace a manifold gasket for an exhaust leak. 800 dollars later I have a car with a new alternator, new belt, new manifold gasket, liquid gasket all over the engine bay. Guess what! I still have a squeak and an exhaust leak and to boot I have a broken alternator mount. Worst car repair ever, avoid these people like the plague. I can't even drive my car now.... I came in on a weekday hoping the wait will be short. Unfortunately no! I came in for a simple evaluation check on tires and brakes. They had put the car up on the lift within the hour of checking in (I waited about half hour on line), which was great, thinking that it will be done in half an hour. Unfortunately no! The car was just sitting on the lift for 2 hours for a simple job. After waiting a total of 3 hours, they came back and said there are no issues with tires and brakes, even though I know there are. The kicker was when I received the car back, there were nails in my tires that weren't there before. If there were no issues, why would there be nails in the tires? If you value your car and time, stay away from this Pep Boys. It's not worth it. read more

Got there 6:45 because they lady tile me they open 7, but failed to mention the pampered mechanics arrive at 8:30. She also told me that getting a brake fluid flush was Simple's and would be quick maybe an hour. I left at 1:30 pm!! 7 bloody hours waiting with a mask on because of covid and they kept announcing that their system was down!! 7 damn hours sitting around and waiting!! No one there gives a damn how long you are waiting. There is no sense of urgency to get the customer out fast. I even asked to sit in my car so I can get some relief from the mask. I saw mechanics just chilling. Too bad this is the closest location to where I live. I'd go to another one, but this is the only one. The solution is simple, GO BY APPOINTMENTS ONLY!!!! Don't make people wait!! This is insane. Plus, I'd get it if their prices were cheap. They are not cheap. Their prices are comparable to the dealership!! Not worth the damn wait!! Just had my oil changed here on January 17th. There was a glitch in the computer system that had the incorrect oil grade for my car. However, they were not able to offer me the oil change package price for the correct oil. But the technicians were nice and tried to put it through. Unfortunately, they couldn't and so that day I paid 110$ for the oil change in order to have the correct oil put in. I guess they charged it separately or something, not sure. Normally, it would have been about 80$. I paid the extra 30$ for the oil change and was told to call the service manager to see if they could fix it. Just got off phone with Dean, who seemed nice on the phone, admitted that there was a computer glitch but said that there wasn't anything he could do to get me back my money. So, I think customer service is an issue with PepBoys. On the positive side, the technicians were friendly, however, money is money. I won't be going back. read more

Upon entering the store i advised the service tech, that i needed a new battery for my car. He immediately said "well how do you know it's your battery and not your alternator?" He proceeded to "check my battery and alternator" and came back out an hour and a half later and told me my alternator was shot and I'd have to pay $552 for the battery , alternator, svc fee and taxes. I indicated to him that my car was running perfectly fine other than having to get jumped one time ever over 2 weeks prior and that i was sure that it was not the alternator. He then showed me a piece of paper that indicated that my alternator was charging at 12.65 v when it should be at 13. I asked him just to sell me the battery And id take my chances. He advised he can't sell me the battery without the alternator. I walked out without having purchased a thing and without any help from your staff. I took my car to autozone WATCHED THE MECHANIC test my alternator which showed a charge of 14.25 and i purchased my BATTERY from them. Took my car here to get a flat tire replaced. The work they performed was adequate. This review is not about the work performed. It did not work out for me to wait there for the few hours until they could work on my car so they offered to allow me to pick up my car the next morning. After paying and walking out to get into my car I noticed that the car had been ransacked. Everything of value had been taken from my car, down to someone emptying out my emergency medical kit and removing items. After complaining to the manager, all he could say was I am sure it was not my men. Denying fault does not change the fact that I was robbed in your lot while in your possession. The windows were not broken, they left the car unlocked. I complained again, and received a voicemail that they had reviewed security tapes and now are sure it was not their staff. That was not the point, it is still your fault because you left the door unlocked. I didn't demand anything in particular, but how about offer an apology and offer to clean the car that had two baby seats in it. What was so offensive about the interaction was the manager's lack of empathy. How much would it have cost him to offer an apology? Probably less time than to deny any wrongdoing. These days, customer service and fixing your wrongs is sometimes more important than getting it right the first time. This was a really bad experience. read more

I have a fleet account with Pepboys. Called to make sure they weren't busy (Manny picked up). I told him what tires I needed and was in a hurry. (I own a driving school) He told me it won't be a problem and to come in. An hour and half of waiting still nothing was done. We asked again and were told it would be done an hour. 2 1/2 hours to get 2 new tires. You got to be kidding me!!!!! Long story short, My instructor was late to his lesson and we got nothing accomplished. These guys not only wasted my time but potential made me lose a customer. Horrible service! I've been going here for awhile but the past Friday, something happened that people need to know about. My A/C was out. I met with Reed, at the Customer Service Desk. He started off with a price of around $60.00. Then went up and down upon being questioned further. Do you need to empty the freon and start fresh, do I need just a refill, etc etc... Truth is, all they have to do is put a gauge on it and see if its empty or low. Their dye test is a quick $60. Why?! When pushed to tell me how much this could potential cost he said finally about $280. I said no way, it wasn't that bad. I went to the area where the guys get you stuff. The guy said, you can use any Freon in this area, here is one with a gauge so you don't hurt anything etc., etc.. I bought a gauge and two cans, filled it up in about 5 minutes and my A/C was freezing. BE WARY OF MR. REED. He is there to rip you off for the Company and make a name for himself if he doesn't already have on. Very disappointed; usually honest service.. read more

i'm gonna keep my profanity 2 a minimum on this, but i went for a state emission inspection as required by law. Not even going to get 2much into the debate i had with how long this experience was going 2take. Cause i was the fool that left my car there when the so-called mechanic told me an hour, especially when he drove my car immediately into the dock. That was suspect. I had a gut feeling to watch them do the inspection, when i really wanted to go 2Staples right next door and see what i can pick up for the home. So i watched Droopy Dog-Drag-A-Long start my inspection. 1st he puts my car on the lift and 10 minutes later he asks me for my wheel locks keys. Seems like he wanted to pick the lock instead of asking me if i can give him the key 2 them He tells me how beautiful my engine looks, then he tells me ONE of my upper bulbs is out. Fine, fix it, i tell him. I'm watching him in amazement on how slow he worked. 40 minutes later and 42 sips of his water or energy juice he's finally finished. i go 2 pay. Inspection is 37 dollars, pass or fail as we know. Why did the cashier tell me $72.16. With blood pressure raising after my over an hour wait, i asked why is it so much. Cashier answer, "u had 3bulbs changed, plus the service charge." I had one bulb changed, sir, i answered. so after going back and forth with him and the mechanic about how many bulbs where changed i asked for the bulbs that where changed back. Unfortunately they can't find them. Now the cashier changes his register and now the bill drops to $60.02 and tells me that he never told me $72.16. Now i'm thinking this is a dream. Instead of trashing the place, i ask for a manager. Manager comes, i still insist on my old bulbs back . He said he wants to see my new ones. Yes this has got 2b a dream. I show him, come to find out, they still have a slightly burnt out bulb still in there. Long story shortened, I asked for them to take that bullchitz, $10 dollar service charge off my bill, which after me foaming at the mouth and 15 minutes later, they finally obliged. DON'T TAKE YOUR CAR THERE. THEY LIE, THEY WILL TRY AND ADD CHARGES, THEN TRY 2 TURN THE TABLES AND MAKE IT LIKE YOU'RE THE DELUSIONAL ONE. IF YOU PUT YOUR PERSONAL INFO ON ANY PAPERS GET THAT DOCUMENT BACK CAUSE ALL THEY DO IS BALL IT UP AND THROW IT AWAY AND LORD KNOWS WHAT THEIR INTENT IS WITH IT. THERE WAS TWO OTHER UNSATISFIED CUSTOMERS THAT ALSO COMPLAINED ABOUT THEM BEING VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. THEY'RE A BIG JOKE AND I WILL STAY AWAY FROM THIS AND ALL OTHER PEP BOYS IN THE FUTURE. Brought my car in yesterday for an oil change, the minute I was handing my key over to mechanic, he quickly pointed out that I had a bubble in my back tire on the rear passenger side. Then another mechanic came over to point out that I had a small slash in my front passenger side tire. I was only going in for an oil change, now I had to change two tires because it was deemed too dangerous to drive. I was told that it would take about an hour. I didn't want to bother them with getting updates, so I came back to parking lot 2.5 hours later. I saw my car was parked and went over to check out the new tires. WELL, The tire with bubble was moved from the rear to the front passenger side! After 2.5 hours, the worst tire that needed to be changed was only moved from the rear to the front?! These are professional mechanics?! I showed the tire to Abdool, one of the helpful customer service guys, and he quickly brought the car back to the mechanics. Half an hour later, I see my car back in the lot. I go and examine the front passenger side tire.....now the tire with the slash is back on! What is going on with the mechanics here? When I asked the customer service guy, Christopher, why at first, the mechanic did not change out the tire with the bubble, then second time around, they replaced it with the tire with the slash?! He brought me to the back to speak to the mechanic. A bunch of them came over and talking at the same time. It was hard to make out what their story was about switching another tire that I thought was good, out. From a pile of tires, they showed me tears inside the tire. At this point, I don't know anymore if they were my tires, if my "good" tire was really bad. They told me that a third tire that they inspected had a tear from the inside and that this one was worse off than the tire with the slash. When they removed this 3rd tire, why didn't they call me in to show me and explain that this one was worse than the slashed tire? There was no communication or explanation of what they did, until I questioned it. What kind of customer service or professionalism is this?! A few months ago, I stopped by to tell one of the mechanics that I kept hearing a sharp sound when I stepped on the brakes. Without even inspecting, he said I probably need to change my rotors and brake pads. My car is a 2013 model with 20k miles. Why would I have to change my rotors?! After yesterday's experience, I do not trust them and will not be going back! read more

What a misnomer. Hard to imagine human beings with less pep... I stood 15-20 minutes at the counter while various dead-eyed zombie employees tried to print out an estimate for an oil change. They'd wander away without looking at me and then half-heartedly shuffle some papers. I wasn't sure what if anything was supposed to be happening. No human interaction; they wouldn't even look at the customers. When one guy finally got a paper printed out, he handed it to me and then ripped it out of my hand again without a word. I went here for what I thought was a routine battery change, tire rotation, and inspection. Soon as I drive into this establishment they try to sell me everything under the sun. The staff is far from professional and that may be an understatement. After getting the services that I came for I leave thinking that all is well. All is far from well I now cannot open the hood of my car. I take my car back and after 6 or 7 mechanics and other workers who were there try to fix it, it still does not open. Now I have to go to the dealership to get the problem corrected and the store manager is not trying to help resolve my problem. Needless to say I will not be patronizing this pep boys anymore and I will be trying to recoup my money to fix my hood from their corporate office. Avoid at all costs! My husband brought our car in here yesterday to have a flat fixed because a passing stranger noticed one of our front tires was becoming flat. The staff at Pep Boys said they could fix it and sent him off on his merry way for an hour. He picked it up, and all looked good. But lo and behold about 30 minutes ago, he went to get in his car to go to work and tire is flat again. I came here on Saturday to get some work done. Thought I was due for a tune up but turns out I didn't need based on their judgement which was much appreciated. However I dropped my car off at 9am. I didn't get my car back until 2pm. had I known that they would take all day I could've gone home and relaxed a bit. However based on my experience at the Ridgewood location I assumed it would be a quick. Therefore I will not be returning to this location. I would agree with the other reviewer about them not being the brightest bunch or the most professional. I definitely noticed that about them. A woman with her child was waiting on her car and the baby was making noise and one of the mechanics in the back just screams out SHUT UP!!! Obviously referring to the baby. So in addition to not so bright and unprofessional, I'll add immature and obnoxious to the list. Clearly I will not be returning to that location. And quite honestly for what they charged I truly feel I could've got a better price elsewhere. I will be taking the more complex jobs elsewhere. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! If I could give them no stars I would. They tried to charge me $2,000 for problems that my normal mechanic said didn't exist. My regular garage was closed and I was over due for an inspection, I thought why not try pep boys? If only I could go back in time. They actually did my inspection quickly, maybe 30 mins at which time they told me that it failed and I had a "broken stabilizer" which he offered to show me. I figured it was certainly possible and went up to the desk to see how much it would cost. The guy at the desk complained about how much work it was for him to enter all of the work my car needed into the computer. They were going to replace all 4 stabilizers, front and rear sway bars, and some other stuff, totaling just over $2,000. I told them absolutely not 1.) because I didn't believe I needed ALL of that work (my car was driving fine) and 2.) because if I was going to get that kind of work done there is no way I would get it done there. I paid the $37.50 for the inspection I didn't pass and went on my way hoping they didn't actually do something to my car (like break something so they could show me it was broken). I went to my regular mechanic the next day and passed my inspection with NOTHING WRONG! I don't know if it was because I had an older car and I am a younger woman that they thought they could get away with this, but it is seriously messed up. read more

I took the car to Pep Boys with no specific or identified issues and they assessed that I needed a tune up and my tires changed. I decided to mull over their recommendations and drove the car back home 0.8 miles away. I returned the following week to just have the tires changed. Again, there were no specific issues with driving the car. When leaving the Pep Boys lot after ONLY having the tires changed, the check engine light came on and the engine started sounding differently. I literally drove 0.3 miles after leaving Pep Boys. In total, I drove 1.9 miles between the time of the Pep Boys assessment and the time the engine light came on WITHOUT HAVING ANY PREVIOUS ISSUES with driving the car. Of course, Pep Boys says this was a complete coincidence. (All distances were calculated according to Google Maps.) read more

I called to make an appt for service and state inspection and received the confirmation text the day before. When I arrived I was told I didn't have an appt. I showed the text and the gentleman I was dealing with said he would put me in even though I wasn't in the system. I showed him the text again and explained that it was their system with the error. My car was serviced and I was told that there was a small hole in a pipe leading to the muffler but they didn't have the part. I also needed windshield wipers and I passed the inspection. When I got home I noticed that the case for my passenger side mirror was cracked and that the inspection sticker was punched for June 2017 although it was July 1st. I can't confirm the mirror was cracked while in their care but the sticker should be valid for 1 year from service, not 11 months. My wife called to complain and was put on hold and hung up on. She finally got a manager who said the computer punches the sticker and there is nothing he could do about it. He said I can bring the car in to look at the mirror but there is nothing they can really do. 4 days later my car is making a funny noise and every time I brake, it feels like I am dragging something under the car. I take it to a trusted mechanic in Queens (Shell Astoria Service) and he tells me my rear brakes are shot. I couldn't even drive it until it was fixed. They also replaced another rusted piece near the brakes. How did I pass inspection with no brakes???? This Pep Boys location is horrible and I do not recommend. The mechanic must have skipped many parts of the inspection. Whats the point if they arent going to do it right? Very dissapointed. read more

The only reason for not giving one star is that the staff was relatively friendly. Logistical CF!!! I asked 3 times for something. Written right on the initial repair order in my own writing. Given to the tech with additional typed instructions saying check fluids. Three of the fluids I requested them to check weren't even checked yet I was billed $38.95!!!. I can pop my hood and check fluids. I can't however put my car on a rack which is why I even subjected myself to this horror show. I get back over 2 hours later. Most of what I asked them to do wasn't even performed. Then when I called them on checking my transmission fluid, as well as the front and rear diff fluids I get the run around. I was pissed!! Called them on their crap asking where my instructions were on the repair order with my signature. Instructions which were never even typed nor anywhere to be found on my copy. Finally the tech was called in. I point blank asked the tech how he checked the fluids. He never checked the transmission fluid or front and rear diff fluids!!!!! THE THREE FLUIDS I SPECIFICALLY ASKED 3 TIMES AND WROTE IT DOWN FOR THEM TO CHECK!! Another half hour goes by. Car is apparently done. The checking of those three fluids isn't even on the repair order after asking two different service advisors why my secific instructions on the initial written repair order wasn't on the typed repair order. If something on a car is touched or a customer requests it to be checked it better damn well be on a repair order. I was absolutely livid!!!! I've been a Pep Boys customer since 1992 and was horrified at the level of competence. The right hand needs to talk to the left hand people. Plain and simple! read more

I needed a tire. Pep Boys' website said they had tires starting at $39.99. One of the brands mentioned at this price was Starfire. I went there on Sunday morning (10/23/15). No tires at that price to fit my car. However, they did have the right size in stock for $64.99. Also Starfire. And it turned out that another of my tires had to be replaced because it had a screw in it --- too close to the rim to plug according to the technician. Bottom line? $189.57. But the customer service guys were nice and pleasant. read more

I've been going to Pepboys for nearly 20 years and have always received excellent service. Yesterday, I had an terrific experience and felt compelled to write it up in a review. I had a seemingly complex electrical problem with my Honda Pilot which had me fearing a lengthy and expensive repair. However, the front desk staff asked me lots of good questions which lead to a quick and inexpensive repair by the mechanics. I really appreciate the excellent customer service and feel that I can really trust Pepboys with my car. I definitely highly recommend the 4th avenue Pepboys! read more

The staff here is completely dishonest and their service is crap. They don't even deserve one star. I had experienced dishonesty from this Pep Boys location once before; but because I had brought it to the manager's attention, and the employee who had overcharged me was no longer working there, I thought the issue had been resolved. But the new incident that I'm writing about now is about as despicable as a merchant can be. I took my car to them for a NYS inspection. The next day, I was notified that I need to replace all 4 of my tires. I noticed in the circular that they had emailed me that tires that were appropriate for my vehicle were on sale. The regular price was $130.99, and the sale price was $79.99. I told the man who called me that I wanted those tires. He told me that they were not on sale, and that I had to pay full price. So I went to the store in person and showed the guy at the counter, Deen, the ad that they had emailed me for this location. He said it was a mistake. I asked for the manager. The manager also said it was a mistake. I showed him the ad and he looked like he didn't know what to say. He said he had to look into it. (What kind of manager doesn't know the price of things in his department?) He came back and said that $79.99 was indeed the price (btw, no apology), but they had run out of those tires. I asked him to order them for me. He replied that by the time they would arrive at the store, the sale would be over. I looked at him in shock. I wanted to yell, but instead I very CALMLY asked for a rain check for the tires at the advertised price, since it wasn't my fault that they were out of stock. He said that he didn't have the authority to do that!! I then spoke to another manager. He was equally useless. When it was clear that this was bait-and-switch, I called the headquarters to complain, and was told that a district area manager would investigate, and then call me back within 24 hrs. No one ever called me back. I called the headquarters 48 hrs & 72 hrs later, asking for the district area manager and got the runaround. I realized that I wasn't getting anywhere with these people, so I went to pick up my car in order to take it somewhere else. They told me I would have to pay for the inspection since they had already done it! When I dropped off the car, there had been an umbrella on the front passenger seat. When I got the car back 3 days later, the umbrella was gone. Anyway, so I went somewhere else, and had to pay for another inspection. Thank goodness I left Pep Boys because at the other place, they told me that I only needed to have 2 tires replaced, not all 4. They also had the same tires for a regular price of $86. When I told them that Pep Boys was charging $130.99 for the same tires, they were shocked. Stay away from Pep Boys! This place is full of liars and thieves. read more
