Made an appointment for an alignment online for 4 only to be called to say the tech leaves at 4 and to make an appointment for the next day. I made an appointment for the next day at 1:00. I get to the appointment and was told that the tech has two car appointments for 1. Then was told that he goes to lunch at 1 and to come back after 2. . Which was an inconvenience for me because I have to pick up my son from school and he still had to do work on the other car. Why let people make appointments if they can't be honored. I waited almost 2 hours and realized the employee was trying to have my fleet company approve a list of repairs that were not requested. I will keep this short and factual so it doesn't seem like I took this personally, but this was a disappointing experience to say the least. I was told by the service rep at this location that I needed 2 cam position sensors for a car that only needs one and was quoted $295 to have the parts sent from Georgia "sometime this week" when the same part (PC845) was sent to me within 2 business days from RockAuto for $75 including tax. She also expected me to believe it would've cost an additional $207 to install the parts. Midas charged me a fraction of that. I don't know if she was being sloppy or really was trying to look out for me when she gave me the quote with the part number on it but I appreciate that she did. I needed a repair on my 2012 Kia Soul and had called numerous time throughout the month of July only to be yelled at and talked down to when asking for help after I had work done on my car here. Travis was absolutely rude, condescending, and unprofessional. I was only able to get some progress with a mechanic, who was visiting last week. Travis did not want to help me to get in touch with the mechanic named Mickey who worked on my car. This morning I couldn't even finish the conversation, because he was yelling over me. It isn't the first time I have received this type of customer service from them. A person named Mike was also short with me, but not as rude as Travis. Mike told me because they couldn't find me part that I had no alternatives, which was not true when I called Kia myself. I would not suggest anyone bring their car to this Pep Boys location for servicing. Especially as a woman, I never raised my voice once or got nasty for them talking over me and yelling. I was only trying to get a contact number, a store that Mickey may be at, or leave a message for him if and when he returned to the Nine Mile Rd location since he was worked on my car. For whatever reason perhaps because Mickey is a mechanic from another shop this must have upset him. Mickey was the only mechanic who was professional that I spoke to, otherwise if Kia wasn't backed up I would have went somewhere else. I spent $1,000 at this place to be treated like trash. They should have Mickey over their permanently so they can learn how to communicate and handle customers. I've never had men talk to me in such a demeaning way (on numerous occasions) at a business no less EVER. I will be calling the corporate office and reporting this. Also my number doesn't go through to the store anymore. I rarely leave reviews but this Pep Boys was great. I had a flat that turned out needing a new wheel. They told me promptly about the issue and kept the car until I found the wheel online. I dropped off the wheel and they fixed it in an hour. They even did the state inspection after I asked them to at the last minute. The mechanics also left a dead decaying rat inside my engine compartment of my car. They never told me about it; I just noticed a smell coming from my car and found it to my surprise. Found myself in a pinch when my car broke down in Richmond Saturday night on my way back to 757. A friend of a friend agreed to work on it the following Monday. We needed to replace a wheel bearing on my old Honda which he told me I should be able to get at the Pep Boys down the street. When I called to inquire about the parts I'd need, the gentleman that answered was courteous and patient as I relayed info to him. I could hear him relaying info to a coworker who went to check the shelf. Teamwork makes the dream work! They took the time to verify the model. When we weren't sure which part would work we purchased two. The manager assured me I could return the unused item for a refund. I didn't realize until I arrived that I had called just as they were closing. They waited around a few minutes to help a sister out and I'm grateful. Had no problem returning the unused item the next day. Shout out to Chelsea for coming through! They seem to have a good team at this location. read more

I have been to this location multiple times to have my oil changed. I am a delivery driver and have a basic knowledge on cars which most mechanics don't expect women to have. My partner works in the automotive industry, so I have someone to validate for me when something is actually wrong with my car. While I was getting my oil changed, they told me I needed to have my brake pads and rotors replaced TODAY and that it was URGENT. Attempting to put the fear of God into me clearly. I was aware that my brake pads were a couple thousand miles away from needing to be replaced, but had a fishy feeling about them mentioning my rotor. So I went to Leete Tire to have both services done, and they asked me who said that my rotors needed to be replaced, and that they are in PERFECT condition. It's common knowledge that most mechanics assume women don't know anything about cars and that will have serviced whatever they say needs to be on the spot. Absolutely ridiculous to been treated this way, especially since we are in a pandemic and the last thing anyone needs is to 1.) be in a ten foot crowded waiting room for longer than needed be and 2.) have to spend more money than necessary. This Pep Boys is very close to the neighborhood I grew up in, so I've been coming here for years. They have a great selection of auto care products.. cleaning supplies, air fresheners, car accessories (even a small audio section), essential fluids, parts, and tools.. It's a chain so if you've been to one, it's pretty much consistent for all stores as far as the retail portion is concerned. I want to highlight the auto service in this review. I come here for oil changes all the time. Sign up for their rewards program and they'll send you coupons in the mail. Typically my family and I pay about $20-$25 for an oil change. They're fast too! I drop my car off around 8, when they open up. And typically they're done in 30mins to an hour. On my last visit I saw advertisements for 30mins or less oil changes when you schedule an appointment. As far as other maintenance and repairs to my car, I usually handle them with my pops or have a family mechanic make a repair. This isn't a knock against their service quality, because over the years my family and I have had a few repairs handled by this Pep Boys. Those experiences were all pretty good and we wouldn't hesitate to return. It's just typically we opt to forgo the labor and service markup of a chain auto repair shop and save some money. read more

UPDATE.... I went back here last week and had excellent service. The guy working the front desk was very nice and service was quick and prompt I usually come to this place to get normal routine maintenance since my dealership is pretty far. They are normally accommodating, however it seems like the management/ staff has changed. There is usually a really nice tall male (forgot his name ) that is accommodating and friendly. Today I came in for a state inspection and was told they were booked for the day. Not a problem. I asked when could I come back or what other days this week are available. He then goes I can't say maybe some time next week. I asked to set an appointment and his was response was we don't set appointments. I asked if I could leave my car, he shook his head and said it wouldn't get done today. I understand shops are busy but customer service was just poor. I bet if I came to buy new tires or needed a new transmission, they would have made room. Doubt I come back for anything else. read more

Came in for oil change and tire rotation. I get my tires rotated at every oil change and this is INCLUDED in the price of the oil change. I specifically asked for them to be rotated at check -in...but they weren't. When I asked the mechanic why they were not he said the tread was fine and they don't need rotation? I asked fir thus service and the cost was included in what I paid. Never ever ever take you car here! If I could give them a zero I would! I took my car in for brakes and rotors. I was quoted a price of around $470. I received a call and was told me car total would be $1578. I was floored! I told them not to do the work and that I would come and get my car. The person I spoke with was trying to pressure me into getting my car fixed there and I told them no thank you the price was too high. They then tried to bargain with me. When I got there I was told I needed to take my car to the dealer because of this laundry list of things I needed to have them repair! I knew then I was not going to allow them to touch my car again! I ended up taking my car right down on 9 mile and walked out paying in total $380 for all the work pep boys was charging $1500 for! The customer service is TERRIBLE! When I came to pep boys to get my car there was a customer there already upset about the service he had received! I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy! read more

I had a service completed at this location to have my air conditioner repaired. That wasn't even the issue. In my car within the arm rest, I had over $60 that I stash for tolls and little emergencies. The mechanic that repaired my car, stole my money. I am truly disappointed because you don't think you need to remove certain items from your vehicle when you're having it serviced. I will never return to this location again. read more

On Friday my son dropped our car off at Pep Boys on Wistar Road in Richmond Va. Today I went with him to pick it up. I asked for 10% off the bill as I have been doing business with them for over ten years and they always try to help especially as the bill was very high. The man (Gibril Camara, Asst. Service Manager) said without a code or coupon he could not. I said okay could I review the charges. I asked that the warranty be removed as we did not want it. It is an older car with over 100K miles and we are trading it in soon. He told me that my son brought the car in and that he was a man and this had nothing to do with me. He said that my son had to authorize the charges before they would start any work, my son stated that he was not told about a warranty. I said that Gibril Camera was rude, the man literally went off to the part where I feared for my life. I told him how dare he tell me what to help my child with, that this is the definition of being a "family". My point is that I am a social worker and I help people with intellectual disabilities all the time. So Pep Boys needs to understand that it is against HIPPA regulations to divulge medical information. So be aware that if you go into Pep Boys to assist someone, that you are going to be attacked by service personnel. My son actually came and put his arm in front of me to protect me and a mechanic from the back came and took Gabril Camara into the back. I guess he thought I could not hear him back there, but I heard every disgusting thing he said. This entire episode will be sent to Autism Speaks and The VA Disability Law Center for confirmation on if companies like Pep Boys and Gibril Camara should be given an explanation of why a social worker (also a parent) is asking to verify charges and advocating on behave of others in the community. I help my clients with their vehicles all of the time looking over charges verifying every line. I never divulge any information about who I am to them as that would be a HIPPA violation. I guess Pep Boys thinks they are above federal regulations. I would like to hear from any others who have experienced any difficulties with Pep Boys. read more

Over the past few months or so, I have been purchasing auto parts from Pep Boys online site to do some repairs. The parts work great. I haven't been in for service but I did visit this location recently because I needed a battery. I initially purchased the battery on the website for in-store pickup. I decided to call the store to verify that they had what I needed before finalizing my order. The representative that answered informed me that they had what I wanted in stock, so I proceeded to checkout online to take advantage of the online discount. I went to the store prior to receiving the confirmation email showing my item was ready for pickup. I'm glad I did because when I got there the man (wish I knew his name) that assisted me informed me that the battery actual had to come from another location. I was kinda disappointed after hearing this because I was told that it was in stock at this location. The man didn't just tell me that I had to wait but he offered a better product that he had available for me to purchase and take immediately. He cancelled my online order and I was able to purchase a new battery and turn in my old one. The customer service was great and I can tell the representative that helped me was very knowledgeable. I would recommend this location to purchase your vehicle parts especially since they are typical not as expensive as Advance Auto or Auto Zone. I brought in my Honda Civic last week knowing I'd need a lot of work done. They were incredibly accommodating and explained the work I needed. They didn't make me feel weird or talk down to me for not really knowing what was wrong with my car or much about cars in general. I paid a little over $1,000 for a lot of different things and it feels like I got a lot more done to my car in return. I was out of town for a couple days and they held my car for a couple extra days while I was gone with no issue. I'm really happy with the work they did. I thought I was in need of a new battery and since I now work in Sandston, I figured I would give the local pep boys a visit to check it out. Thinking you have a problem with your car is stressful enough and there is also the fear of them finding a much bigger problem when they finally check out the car, but my experience went about as opposite as I could expect. When I arrived the service manager Greg was already helping 4 other customers and answering what seemed to be an endless amount of phone calls. He handled everything very professionally and was polite and courteous to every customer he assisted. So I waited patiently knowing there were a lot of people ahead of me. Knowing I had waited almost 20 minutes just to get a battery check Greg did the battery check for me personally and found nothing wrong. He didn't try to find any unnecessary repairs or sell me anything else which a lot of places can get a bad reputation for, instead he pulled my car around and said everything was fine and I was good to go.
