My passenger side window jammed open on Friday night and needed to take the car on a long road trip the coming Sunday. This left me in a bind as my go to place is closed over the weekend. I had read the negative reviews for this place, but decided to give it a shot anyway... which as a mistake. Firstly, I had to stand at the "service" area for 15 minutes before any of the multitude of employees filtering in and out of the garage took the time to talk to me. There was no one else in line. They took my car keys and charged me $90 for the diagnostic. Fair enough. This took THREE HOURS to complete. They gave me a quote for the repairs, but I opted to shop around. A couple of days later when I was picking up my wife from work, I realized that they had failed to reconnect the power lock on my drivers side door. I called them up to let them know the situation, but the guy couldn't wrap his head around what I was telling him so I took my car in to try and explain in person. When I got there, the guy still couldn't get to grips with it. I had the invoice with me from the diagnostic and he went and found the "mechanic" who had worked on my car originally who rolled his eyes at me when I politely explained the situation. He was busy "organizing the spark plugs" apparently and it took another hour for him to even look at the car. Turns out it was a 5 minute job to reconnect the lock and I was good to go. Can I do fewer than 1 stars? I cannot speak to the quality of their service at the Van Nuys Pep Boys location because I couldn't get past the estimate. I have never felt like I was being cheated so badly before this experience. I called Pep Boys Van Nuys location a week ago for an estimate for a 2015 Prius minor service (inspection, oil change, tire rotation, fluid top off, etc.). I already knew that Toyota charged $146 for this service. The quote I got from PEP-VN over the phone was $160. Next I called Pep Boys in Culver City for the same quote, I got $74. Today I decided to the Van Nuys location in person to make sure that I was clear in the service i needed, and see if the quote would be similar to the Culver City store. After printing out a sheet and staring at the paper for 2 minutes, the service agent announced $134. I wanted to ask him if this was the number or if he was just guessing. I have had great experiences at other Pep Boys locations. These Van Nuys Pep Boys are not trustworthy. read more

Disgruntled customer. Invoice request for tire rotation and new hubcaps. No tire rotation documented and tires look like they are in same place so assume it wasn't done. Also not charged. Very odd. My husband wanted two of the old hubcaps back and communication was not passed on to technician. What happened to overall quality of work, customer service and communication. People hear what you say but do not listen to the words. Now need to go elsewhere for tire rotation. And they call this progress with all our fancy technology. The worst service we have ever received - that's how I would describe the Van Nuys Pep Boys. I would give 1/2 of a star if I could. Or no stars. And I almost never give a negative review on Yelp. Not only did they have the worst customer service attitude, they took over two hours to change a bulb. I would not give them a dime again, or ever recommend them to anyone. Please stay away. I was quoted a 45 minute wait time to patch my tire, after the jackass was smart with me and told me the difference between a patch and a plug was "one's a plug and one's a patch." Once it had been 45 minutes and my car wasn't even up on the racks, I asked for my keys back and left (which also took another 10 minutes). I went down the street to Van Nuys Tire and they immediately took the tire off and did the job. I know better than to go to places like Pep Boys and Jiffy Lube but for some reason I had a lapse of judgement and went anyway. Learned my lesson. FRAUD. I singed up online for an oil change. On the website I was required to fill in the Year, Make and Model of my vehicle. This I do and selected oil change. I was presented with three options. I chose synthetic and was given a quote. Once at the store they complained that they could not find my appointment. They quoted me a price 35% higher. I explained the price quoted. Now the manager says I have no appt. He says he looks at today, tomorrow and the next day. No appt. I give him my locator number and he pretends not to see me. Cashier says is that him?? I came in to get my infinity G35 new tires. Eddie was really helpful. He had ordered 2 20"s and when I arrived he had them ready for me. He gave me a really good deal and on top of that they offer Military discount which took off a good 35 bucks. Again, I can't stress on how professional he was. Martin helped me. I came in for an oil change and a tire patch. 30 mins in and he calls me and tells me I need to replace my rear shocks. I didn't say yes and he said he would give me 50% off so I agreed. 3 hours later when my car is finally done he has some other guy try to charge me full price. I tell them he promised me 50% off and the guy takes $30 off a $500 bill (Martin is now avoiding me at this point). I ask to speak to Martin and he tells me that he said on the phone that he'd give me 50% off of labor on the shocks, and not the shocks themselves. He says I misheard him, I say he lied. Came here after work to get my routine oil change. It was 7:40pm I waited patiently since some people had been waiting for their oil change. I after a half hour finally got to the auto service line. I have been changing my oil here since September 2013. This time was different. I usually get the high mileage oil change. I have a car that is over 10 years old so I know every little bit helps especially taking care of your car. I paid over $70 dollars for an oil change!! This seemed extremely high since the manager special for $39.99 was advertising an oil change, tire rotation, fuel cleaner. Just one high mile oil change earlier I spend $50 dollars. When I asked again about the oil change the automotive cashier said the oil change is normally that $70 price. That is the last time I change my oil here. read more

For the second time, I've been terribly disappointed by this Pep Boys location. Both times had to do with their poor scheduling system. The first visit they said the person I called and scheduled an appointment with "must not have written it down" because it was not in their system. Today, I just needed an oil change. I scheduled an appointment online so I could have proof that I had done so. When I arrive for my appointment they tell me that nothing is recorded, yet again. This time they said their online system does not properly schedule their appointments. To make matters worse, they could not pacify the inconvenience by taking care of it because they only have one mechanic who left much earlier for a personal emergency. While of course I hope everything is okay, it would make a lot of sense to post this publicly so people are aware. The online system effects every Pep Boys location, as I've learned from the assistance of another location, however, what I truly expected was better CUSTOMER SERVICE. Neither time did they care at all about their system being poor and customers being consistently inconvenienced. I have witnessed other people placing complaints with management as well, hence the already low location rating. Just drive a little further and go some where else. I did not know my battery was under warranty, but they did, and I ended up paying $11 for a new battery. The service here is not as good as a dealership, but my mother in law took her car to Keys and they were going to charge her $600 for a battery and water pump that were fine. The worse mechanical experience. Having a 3:30 appointment meant nothing. I waited the 2.5 hours so they can tell me a diagnosis I already knew about but instead of fixing it like agreed. I came back to an unfixed car...another 2.5 hours I came back and was told to wait another 45 minutes until they actually worked on my car. They assumed I went home. I took my car here for a free diagnostic check engine test. The car was scanned and 2 codes showed up. It would then cost me $89.99 to see what the codes meant in order to repair it. After I YouTubed the codes myself, it turned out to be a code for a loose fuel cap and the other code for an emissions issue. I proceeded to leave my car but they had only 1 mechanic working due to it being Sunday. The service clerk recommended that make an early appointment for the next day to ensure the work to be done. I did and dropped my vehicle off at 9am sharp. At about 1:20pm the service clerk called me and said they were getting ready to diagnose my car. After about 3 hours (after not hearing from them) I called them back and they told me that they did not have the proper tools to diagnose a Honda computer and that they would have to order the tools in and can I bring it back Thursday. What?! Couldn't they have told me that at 9am or they day before on Sunday?! I then took my car back and left. They never diagnosed my car therefore I wasn't charged the $89.99 fee to check see why the check engine light was on and to decipher the codes. Meanwhile I'm driving my car around still which may be worsening what could be causing the check engine light to stay on. Anyone know a trustworthy mechanic? Geez. read more

Never bringing my car here again. They did some repairs on my vehicle last year. Almost exactly a year later, a similar problem occurred. They gave us the run around about what was under warranty, and both times the repair took much longer than it seemed like it should have. The biggest red flag to me was when they tried to tell us the work the previous year had been on the driver's side, and not the currently problematic passenger's side. We checked the paperwork (which is a copy they gave us, meaning they have THE SAME PAPERWORK on file) that clearly stated it was the passenger's side both times. Seemed like a clear attempt to pull one over on us so we would pay full price for parts that should have been under warranty. They just could not seem to get their story straight. read more

I have a check engine light that's been turning on and off for the past few weeks. I came to this shop to get it checked out and to get a smog check. When I arrived 3 employees were talking and ignoring me until I waved them down. I had been to another pep boys that same day but they didn't have a mechanic who could fix my engine working that day so they recommended I come to this location. The other pep boys gave me the service codes. At this location the attendant said he couldn't check my car out because the check engine light wasn't on at the moment, even though the other pep boys had already let me know my engine needed repairing. The under side of my pristine 2017 Prius is now completely covered with oil because the numbnut changing my oil left the o-ring off the filter and it's leaked for a week. Lucky i saw the drips in my driveway before it got too low and fried the engine. I paid 79 bucks for a Synthetic oil change with tire rotations. They DID NOT rotate the tires although the receipt says they did. I marked the wheels with an marker to check. At this point I doubt they put synthetic oil in the car either. I used to shop here. Just had a smog check this morning. The other smog check station was charging me $50. Had to go back home coz the guy needed the DMV barcode. Then I passed by Pepboys and was just curious to know how much they would charge. $38 for a van! And he did not need to see the DMV barcode. So i decided to go for it! 25 minutes and it was done. Just in the nick of time! Before leaving work today one of my co workers noticed a low front tire on my truck. I decided to stop by at Pepboys in Sherman Oaks so they could put some air and check for leaks. Thinking it was too late, I asked Martin at the service desk if he had time to look at my tire. Without hesitation he had someone look at my tire. They noticed a nail between the sidewall and main thread of the tire. He gave me the option to patch the tire but as a safety precaution he recommended that I replaced the tire because it was too close to the sidewall of the tire. I told him to go ahead and replace. Upon further inspection of my truck he noticed that the other 3 tires were under 3/32, and recommended I replace them. I had no idea they were that low and knowing I have to drive over 800 miles and carrying my precious cargo, my family, I decided to replace them them all. I cant thank Martin enough for pointing this out to me. I was too busy planning my trip and buying last minute items that I forgot to check the tires. I'd also like to point out that it was late and he and his mechanic stayed after the store closed to ensure my tires were installed. Great Service! I went to Pep Boys for windshield wipers thinking that it would be so easy to find them , but i thought wrong. I received horrible customer service for something so simple. When I initially went in and gave the employee all the information about my car, he gave me the incorrect windshield wipers without asking necessary questions. I spent 20 minutes trying to install them and eventually went back to the store to see if someone could install them there. Upon returning, there was absolutely no one at the store to offer me assistance. Finally when I found somebody, I showed them the windshield wiper to my car and showed them the ones I'd purchased earlier, asking him if they were the correct ones. He sends me to the service department, where again, I could not find anybody to help me. When I did find somebody to help me, he informed me that I was sold the incorrect windshield wipers. Who woulda thought? I went back to find the correct windshield wipers at almost DOUBLE the price. I decided not to buy them due to such a horrible experience from the start. I went to the register to return my previous, incorrect purchase, only to find that again, NO ONE WAS THERE TO HELP ME. Even returning the damn things took twice as long as it should of. I recently had to get my 'turn signal' electic component replaced and wasn't sure where to go considering it was a Saturday and my mechanic wasn't available. I was very skeptical to give this Pep Boys my business because they had gotten a lot of bad YELP reviews. However, my experience was awesome! They first checked to see if it was just a simple solution but unfortunately the car is over 10 years old and the whole piece had to be replaced. They did a wonderful job and they even gave me a small discount because I promised to 'spread the word' and continue coming back to them for service. The staff is friendly and pricing is - well - better than a dealership. I have been here twice and on each occasion been quoted 1 hour, while the actual repair has taken 2+. But the work is fine and I like that they document your receipt with a telephone number as I made a return on an air filter I bought. I would give them zero if I could. I picked this location because it's right next to Costco and when I got my new tires, Costco suggested I needed to get them aligned; I went to Pep Boys and signed up for their 5-year warranty alignment. I had made an appointment a head of time; but I had to wait for about 30 minutes to talk to their staff (btw there was nobody in front of me when I stood in front of their service desk to talk to the person; but the gentleman in front desk kept disappearing and joking with ladies, etc.. etc. he did everything except work). I finally dropped my key. It took them about 3.5 hours to do the alignment. That was 6 months ago. I figured that was a one time fluke and brushed it off. I went for another alignment last week. This time I also had made an appointment online again and waited about 20 minutes to just drop the key. again nobody was in front me and the same person took his time to do everything except helping customers. I finally dropped my key. I was told they will call me when the car was ready and they never did. I returned after 3 hours to figure what was holding them up and luckily they had finished the work; I needed my brakes checked as well; but I'll never go to them for another service except the alignment that I'm stuck with for another 4.5 years! I'll keep updating this review if I ever have a positive experience in their location; but so far, two negative ones back to back. I am 100% sure their hard working mechanics are wonderful and I really have no issues with their mechanics. they seem to be really busy and they seem to suffer just as much from poor management and broken computers; The way manager runs this service center is so poor that I'm shocked they're still in business. very disappointing. read more
