Worst service and nacho platter ever! Waitress has a bad attitude. I ordered nachos and asked for queso cheese on the side. She brought my order that contained no nacho cheese and then stated they were also out of "nacho cheese". I then asked about the queso to which she said they were out then proceeded to say they have the queso con chili... to which I said it was fine. When I went to pay the bill , I asked if the charge could be removed because there was no nacho cheese and I only ate 2 of the chips due to the taste and appearance of the platter. The nachos were burnt, meat dry and the shredded cheese was I literally ate 2 of them and asked her to take it away. She proceeded on to say they do not serve nacho cheese with the platter. I always loved this Pepe's. we returned after several years and found the restaurant has apparently had an extreme budget cut back. I liked my enchiladas and frozen Marg. It was early and only a few other people. Our lovely server (probably the only one,) explained to us the restaurant is just hanging on due to major conflict with the owner of the building who is not forthcoming with repairs, etc. complying with Countryside. read more

Used to be a nice restaurant. Went on Tuesday 9/2/2025 @ 11am. Had to wait for a waitress to come in. No guacamole due to having no ripe avocados. Rice and beans have no flavor. Tables have no salt, pepper, or green salsas. We both ordered cokes given cans of soda we each was given different size glasses. No refills on soft drinks. Does not have lemonade. Unfortunately it seems this location is really under managed now. They stated they could only take cash or Zelle, no credit card machine. No alcohol could be sold because liquor license is expired. I ordered hard shelled tacos that were not the same as in the past. Shells were greasy and fell apart. Meat was mushy and salty. No Pepes hot sauce available in bottle or packets because they ran out. Served different homemade salsa. The gambling machines are no longer there as well. Excellent luncheon specials! The shrimp fajitas were perfectly grilled and the shrimp were giant! I asked for peppers only, no onions, and they were happy to accommodate that. Plus, the multi-colored peppers were grilled to perfection. Service was excellent. My husband very much enjoyed his enchilada combo - beef and chicken. First the food: My beef burrito suizo (dinner) was so wet it should have been served in a bowl. The nearly pulverized ground beef must have been boiled or microwaved because it was grey, wet and tasteless, no spice of any kind. There wasn't much else rolled into this soupy "Blah-rito" certainly no flavor. The other diner, with me, rated their order "eatable but not that good". Now the service: It was good but with some issues. (the only reason I upped rating from 1 star to 2) Smiling, friendly but confused wait staff couldn't decide who our server was as one server took our order (after we sat at an empty table for 15 minutes), another brought out our order (in reasonably time) and still another keep returning to check in. When I questioned the third server as to the contents within my wet burrito they looked so puzzled I gave up asking. We also waited (after asking 2 servers) for our check for 10 minutes. Lastly Ambiance: Welcome to Pepe's gambling right in the dining room! NO it is not in a separate room or even walled off. OK there is a 4 foot high "Cubical type wall" but the machines are high with high stools so fully visible, noisy, distracting lights flashing and just plan ANNOYING! Really? Inside the dining area of your restaurant? Even the few remaining "Hot Dog" stand/places that have succumb to installing these machines, mostly have them way off to the side, floor to ceiling walled off and NOT right in the dining room! I would have given this Pepe's (even with the watery "Blah" food items and confused slow service) a 3 star rating if not for this unnecessary annoyance. I realize that during and now post Covid many businesses are struggling and short on staff but Pepe's come on, you know how to do better. read more

The food was way too expensive for its quality. As soon as I walked in, I knew I'd be disappointed and I wasn't wrong. The chips lacked salt and the salsa had way too much salt! The steak fajitas had way too much onions and peppers, with not enough steak. I literally ate like 5 skinny pieces of steak before it was all gone. Also, what is up with the salty tomato sauce over the rice? Their cheese blend over the beans was very finely grated which was weird. Now let's talk about the restaurant itself. It was super dark in there, but not the cute kind of dark like how the Cheesecake Factor dims their light. Theirs was the kind where it looks like they are trying to save on the electricity bill and pretty much depend on outdoor lighting. Which made it feel really hot inside there. Where's the AC? As soon as you walk into this restaurant and see how it looks, you can tell it's going to suck. Looks mean everything! I don't know about you all but one thing I hate the most is spending my hard earned money on bad food! I really wanted to leave as soon as we got the tasteless chips, but the waiter was already asking us for the 10th time, what we wanted to order. Give us time man. Pepe's has been around for like 50 years. It is a staple in Illinois. I had not been to Pepe's in about 3 years so my husband and I decided to go again, plus we had a $10 off coupon so what the heck we went. The food has not changed a bit in all the years I have been going to Pepe's. I had the Azteca Combination platter and my husband had the Fiesta combination platter. It was good, the portions were good and we brought home leftovers. My favorite thing on the menu is their Chili Con Queso Dip. OMG is it good!! The service was excellent. My margarita was just OK-I've had better at other restaurants. All in all, my husband and I had a very good experience at Pepe's. We will be back-we have another $10 coupon to use. read more

The girl I spoke with at Pepe's flat out refused to A) refund my money or B) send me the correct food order. Instead, I was offered a coupon "the next time I came in". Horrid experience. Came here on a Sunday night. Wanted to take advantage of the $3 beer special. Requested corona, they were out of stock. I was surprised by that because it's a Hispanic restaurant. Next I was with family and wanted separate checks (just two). They said they could not do that and if we wanted different checks we had to sit separately. The bathrooms are junky for a restaurant that charges $12-$20 per plate. I would be embarrassed as a business owner. My guess is this Pepe's has once again changed management and this is NOT for the better. When we arrived we asked about our favorite waiter and told "he left"; probably because he was good at his job. The guacamole had way too big and too many onions (fillers). The service was horrible! Even though there were 4 wait staffers and only 3 tables to wait on. At one point I had to go up to the cashier's station to request chips and found 6 employees standing around the cash register chatting. At no point during our visit were ever never asked if we needed refills, which we did need, but I did not want to go back to the cashier's station. I watched other clients struggle for service, so it wasn't just my table. The general tone was "clients are a bother". Over the years we have seen a steady decline in this Pepe's. When I got home I checked the menu online with what I ordered and the two dinners I ordered were $13.95 each. I did order extra sour cream and salsa so that would increase my total but should be nowhere near the $51. As a Californian living in Illinois, a good taqueria was definitely something I was missing. I found a quality place for Mexican food BUT NOT HERE! I went to Pepe's first on a recommendation by the person cutting my hair at Sport Clips and was excited to get my taco fix. The problem is I thought Pepe's was a local place and as you might know if you live here long enough in Illinois, Pepe's is definitely a franchised restaurant. That isn't all that bad since I like Portillo's, Buona, and In-and-Out (whoops, my Californian slipped), but the food here was treated as such. First off the grub is way too expensive for what you are getting. Once again, I am a little jaded because I come from San Jose -- the land of Pho and Burritos where you can get either in good quality for not a whole lot of money. Second, the food was waaay too 'mericanized for me not to notice. There should be NO use for straight up Wisconsin cheesehead cheddar and velveeta to ever be on an enchilada, but that's what it looked like -- some yellow latex paint up on my food. I'm going to level with you and say this shocking thing about this restaurant: all things considered, I'd rather have Cool Ranch Tacos from Los Taco Bell than come back to Pepe's and the Doritos Tacos are salty messes! read more

I didn't have very high hopes coming here here because of Yelp reviews I've read, but I was very impressed!! My friend had their restaurant.com certificate that was $25 off $45 of food, but could not be applied towards specials. We went on a Wednesday, which is half price margarita day, so we could still order the drinks, but they were rang up separately, and could not be included for the deal. Not a biggie, in our opinion. With the 3 of us that went $45 would be easy to spend, right? Wrong. So so wrong... which is really a great thing! Prices are so reasonable there! To start, you get the complimentary chips and salsa. Their salsa has no kick to it whatsoever, which I normally like, but it was still good, with fresh chunks of tomato and onions. We also got a full order of guacamole to help with our bill price. It came in a small-ish bowl, but really ended up being way too much! It was a good balance of avocado, tomato, onion, cilantro and garlic. I really liked it. For the main dishes, two of us got quesadilla dinners (adding the rice/beans on cost an additional $2) and one got their steak taco dinner. The tacos came individually wrapped, and looked pretty juicy, so the wrapping made sense, a huge platter too. My steak quesadilla was loaded with steak and chihuahua cheese (I actually spelled chihuahua right on the first try, by the way, proud moment!). It came with sour cream and a little more guac on the side. They were simple but delicious, I was only able to eat 1/4 pieces though because of how much guacamole I had had prior, but I was happy to take it home. The refried beans were standard but good. The rice had too much of a cheap tomato sauce taste to it that I didn't like. And overall, I would've liked things to have been a tad hotter. It seemed like my meal might've been done first and sitting out for a minute before delivery. We also ordered margaritas, since it WAS half price day... how could you pass that up? They don't limit what flavor you can choose, and there are three size options, 16, 24 and 27oz... um wow. I got the raspberry on the rocks, which had a good kick, but overall ended up being too sugary and giving me a major stomach ache-- I suppose it could've also been coupled with the fact that I ate so much during the meal too. Well seeing as my wife and I did have a groupon we figured we would go and form our own opinion. SO GLAD went, the place was clean, the service was excellent, and the food delicious. If you love enchiladas as much as I do you've got to try them here! The food was very flavorful and so delicious. The salsas and hot sauces are amazing, I even bought some extras to take home! The manager was super accommodating and the service was very fast. For the price you pay the portions are enough for a couple meals so definitely worth it. The margaritas were delicious as well.
