Wow! So happy we finally got to try Pequod's. This deep dish was Soo good (cross between Detroit style and Chicago Deep dish). It was unlike any other deep dish in Chicago and I've tried ALOT (Lou Malnatis, Gino's East, Giordanos, Pizzeria Due, Pizzeria Uno) Standard pizza comes as cheese and you have to pick and choose your toppings. We got 2 medium pizzas and the house salad for 3 people and it was way too much food (took 6-slices home). Pizzas we got were a sausage and mushroom and Canadian bacon and pineapple. The Hawaiian with Canadian bacon and pineapple was actually my favorite. Crust is burnt cheese but so good! For 3 people, a medium pizza is 6-slices. We'll pass on the salad next time and just order the pizza. Inside is 2-levels and the waitress was super nice. Definitely make reservations. For how much hype the place got, it was kinda just okay for us. We ordered regular cheese, deep dish with some garlic, cheesy bread and neither impressed us to super high levels. Don't get me wrong, it killed our hunger and for the lunch special price ($8), it was well worth it. There is no way I could leave Chicago without swan diving head first into some pure, gluttonous deep dish pizza. When I crowdsourced Chicago recs from my instagram story, Pequod's was the most recommended restaurant regardless of type of food. It was the people's champ. I cross referenced every rec I got with the r/chicagofood reddit thread, and even the nose in the sky reddit users of Chicago had mostly positive things to say about Pequod's. I knew I was in good hands. When I walked in at 11:30am on a Monday, I was pretty shocked that it was kind of a hole-in-the-wall sports bar like setting. I was expecting an old school Italian restaurant, but I much preferred the no frills ambiance. I grabbed a table for 1 and scanned the menu that read"Best Pizza In The Universe!" at the top in big bold letters. I was licking my lips. I went with a 12" medium pizza ($22.95) with sausage and pepperoni, and the Pequod's IPA. I really don't even drink beer as I just get so full off it, but something about getting a deep dish pizza in Chicago at 11:30am on a Monday is just so far from who I am on a normal day that I felt like I should go all the way. That IPA smacked too. I sat there for 45 minutes baby sitting my IPA while awaiting this behemoth of a pizza. It arrived in an iron skillet, steam escaping through the cracks of one of the most beautiful amalgamations of dough, sauce, cheese, and meat that my pupils have ever witnessed. I immediately wished my brother could teleport here, as he is the only human being that can eat more than me. I ate 3 out of the 6 slices and was stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey, but what a delectable meal this was. Every bite has a crispy bottom, an explosion of red sauce and cheese, topped off crispy pieces of pepperoni and sausage. I'm obsessed with deep dish pizza. I've seen some discourse on the interweb lately surrounding Chicago Deep Dish pizza, and it's been taking a bit of a beating. Here's what I will say: If I was a Chicago local, deep dish would hold a special place in my heart. I'd have it 2 times a year on the most reverent occasions, where I feel 100% okay with celebrating all the way. If I got a new job I was excited about, I'd call my brother up and tell him we have to hit Pequod's and eat ourselves to death in celebration. Honestly, wtf. We ordered a 10 inch, 10 pc buffalo wings, and one soda. I was genuinely distraught that I paid 50 something bucks for hot garbage. I am dead serious when I say that your money is better spent getting dominoes, pizza hut, or any other quick service/chain pizza. Gosh this place stays open late. The 1.5 hour wait on a random weekday was rough, but always bodes well when a place is busy. It's certainly the winner of the deep dish pizzas I trialed in Chicago this past visit. Pretty small joint with a sports bar vibe on the inside. A few booths, a few high tops, a few thrown together tables with casual bar seating on one side. Service was fine, understandably a touch spotty at 11pm on a Wednesday. I appreciated the ability to split pies and add various toppings. I get the cook times can vary slightly, but the whole thing is swaddled in cheese, no? We opted for half cheese and half spinach, basil, garlic, and ground beef. The crust was blackened and crispy on the outside, still a touch underdone and soggy on the inside. I preferred the toppings half much more than the cheese half, and the ground beef came in large caramelized chunks that stood their own against the sea of cheese. The garlic was fragrant and paired nicely with the basil. Spinach was expectedly a little watery. Overall a satisfying deep dish experience. We walked past several empty tables only to be seated next to the bathroom on the second floor. I asked if we could move, but was told the seating was assigned. That didn't really make sense when there were multiple empty tables for two. If the next guests haven't even arrived yet, they wouldn't know where they were originally supposed to sit. Thankfully, after a few minutes, COMMON SENSE prevailed and they moved us to a much better table, which I really appreciated. Couldn't come back to Chicago and not go back to Pequod's Pizza for a good ol' Chicago-style deep dish! Thankfully, unlike the other times I came here, we made a reservation so there was no wait. I've been able to refine my Chicago deep dish pizza recipe over the years at local spots back home, so it was time to implement it here. Ordered a 14" Pan Pizza with Sausage, Meatball, Green Pepper, Fresh Garlic, and Fresh Basil. Oh man...this HIT! The vegetables and garlic provided the perfect complement to the meatiness of sausage and meatball. Plus, for once, the crust was actually really good here. I've had my reservations about the crust being too bready here, but it did not disappoint on this trip. Plus it had the trademark crust made of caramelized mozzarella cheese, which is always tasty. Had to stop at the fabled Pequod's for their unique take on deep dish- as a big fan of Detroit style, I expected to be a big fan. I underestimated how much they'd absolutely NUKE this thing. The onions I paid 4 dollars extra to have on top were far and few, and what little pieces were left were charred beyond being able to even taste them. The pepperonis had similarly been through the wringer, but had fared slightly better than their vegetable counterparts. The crust was definitely blacker than I expected, and more than I would've liked, but was still satisfyingly crunchy. Out of all the pizza places that I've been recommended to try in the Chicago area, Pequods is my favorite. Their standout for me is the caramelized cheese crust and the pan-fried style. My partner and I ordered a small pizza for the two of us and we had leftovers to take home! I would recommend getting 2-3 toppings even though you can get 5 for the pizza because the flavors can start to blend after a while! Their sandwiches were also out of this world. I already knew Pequod's was a local favorite, but wanted to get some insight, so we asked a local which he preferred and yup, he said this was it. We made the trek out of the way just to eat here. From the Fullerton & Greenview stop, it's about a 20 min walk through a college town. You need to get there by 2-3pm if you want to avoid the long lines, or you can make a reservation online. The space is like a long narrow bar with booth seating along one side and a nice huge bar on the other. They have great local beer on draft in perfectly iced glasses. Deep Dish with Italian Beef & Mushrooms 2/5* Being our first time, we tried to keep the pizza toppings to a minimal to keep from complicating flavors. The pie came out piping hot with their signature burnt edges, dripping in sauce. It was so saucy, it'd make a Latina proud. The mushrooms were plentiful and the red sauce had a subtle sweetness that I enjoyed. But it wasn't very cheesy at all and sadly we didn't even taste the Italian beef, or anything else besides the sauce. To top it off, what should've been the best part was actually this pie's demise... the crust was terrible! So dense with a hard crunch like day-old bread that was re-baked. We were so unsatisfied that we walked a few blocks down to eat again at Lou Malnati's. To each their own, but I'm not a fan of dense crunchy crust. With a few exceptions, Pequod's is everything you've heard that it is. The service is friendly and the dining area is loud, dark, and hipster-laden. Look, the pizza is great. Crust, delicious. Sauce, terrific. Toppings, wonderful. So what didn't work? The sausage on the pie - what very little there was of it - was an outstanding rendition. I've love to know who makes it so I can buy it myself. There was so little, though, that some slices didn't even have any. The upcharge amounted to a ripoff. Nearby tables that had ordered pepperoni had pies that were absolutely blanketed with wonderfully charred slices. Next time, pepperoni. And Don't. Get. A. Salad. Expensive, forgettable, and a small amount of nothing for big bucks. Make a reservation and order well and you'll have an incredible meal. Where to grab the best deep dish in Chicago is always a hotly contested question to ask someone, but I will stake my flag on the mountain that Pequod's is the BEST in the city hands down. Anyone who tells you differently probably just hasn't tried Pequod's yet. You absolutely MUST make a reservation in advance otherwise you will be waiting for a LONG time....even with a reservation you may end up waiting for a few minutes. I have never been here when the place (both downstairs and upstairs) aren't packed. Pequod's set's themselves apart with their fresh ingredients and caramelized crust. I love to do a personal deep dish with pepperoni and pepperoncini and it is soooo good...and even at a personal size I always end up being able to finish only about half of the cheese loaded deliciousness. I don't live in Chicago, but I make it up at least once a year. For the last 3 years, Pequod's has been the first meal I've enjoyed in the Windy City as soon as I step off the plane at Midway. Completely overrated. I had pequods about four years ago and ended up giving a full pie away to a stranger. It was awful. I told myself it was due to delivery. Fast forward to now and I currently live two blocks away and would ALWAYS see lines out the door to get in. I convinced myself the delivery part was the reason it wasn't good so finally ate at the restaurant. Had the garlic bread and a medium deep dish. I genuinely do not understand the hype around this place. The service was fast and efficient, so no complaints there, but the pizza itself was honestly some of the worst I've ever had and I LOVE pizza. Updated Review: we had a disappointing experience last evening with our take out pizza (as you can see in the review below). It was nothing like our experiences in the past so I decided to call and speak to a manager. He apologized and told us he would refund our money. He said sometimes the take out orders are iffy when they are really busy. I feel so relieved and satisfied that he was so responsive and handled our issue without question. Great customer service, and honestly because of my conversation with the manager, I will now be happy to go back. Review from last night: Not. good. The pan pizza was so soggy and very very thick. The spinach topping was so sparse I couldn't even taste it. It was like eating a loaf of wet bread. The thin crust was just okay. I felt bad because my out of town parents were really craving Chicago pizza, and it just didn't hit the mark. It's pricey as well. For 2 large pizzas (1 thin and 1 pan with one topping), it was $72 for take out. I'm so disappointed and feel worse for my parents who hardly ever come to Chicago. I don't know if this was an off day or the recipe has changed, but I remember something different. Honestly I can't imagine wanting to go back. The seating area is small but cozy. read more
