My party called about an hour in advance to secure a table and were very well accommodated by the lovely hostess Grace. We arrived about 20 minutes early and Grace and Lauren were very kind and allowed us to sit immediately (which usually doesn't happen in busy restaurants, thank you ladies) When seated, our waitress Danielle was pleasant and efficient in service. We started off with some street corn and avocado fries. THE AVOCADO FRIES WERE HEAVENLY AND SO GENIUS!! I am, unarguably their biggest fan. The street corn was also incredible, but I did choke on some cilantro (my fault not the restaurant we u guys) and Grace saved me from choking. Legend. When our main course of chicken tinga quesadillas arrived I was, and I cannot stress this enough, ecstatic. It was delicious, even though I did have another altercation with cilantro. What is this place? Is it Mexican? Is it contemporary? Is it some kind of blend? I don't know exactly what they're going for, but I do know that I won't be going here again. I came with two friends and was pretty excited to try some Mexican in Newport. When the waitress came by and said the special was bass I knew something wasn't quite right. Undeterred, my friends and I ordered the chips and a margarita pitcher. The were good, but nothing special, and were cold so I knew they weren't fresh. The margaritas were actually pretty good and we all got a slight buzz from them. For dinner I ordered the quesadilla with carnitas. Our food came out all messed up, the waitress and person who brought the dishes out (and us too) were unable to tell which meat was pork and which was chicken - they were so similar in color and texture that I'm pretty sure they were both the same thing, whatever it was. Despite this, the quesadilla was OK. Didn't have much flavor or anything unique though, and wasn't really enough food to be filling. I'll start off by saying that I am not rating this place as a Mexican restaurant. I'm rating it based on the quality and flavor of food along with the authenticity of the decor and the good service. The hubby stopped in here last year on a food tour. Occasionally he mentions the ribs he had here. We moved date night to Friday and decided to get out of Providence. Newport it was. Arrived round 8:30PM on a Friday. The place was packed, but the wait was less than 15 mins. We ordered a round of drinks as we waited. A Dos Equis for the hubby and a Paloma for me. The Paloma could use a little sweetener. The waitress offered me agave nectar to sweeten it, and it did just the trick. We decided that since this is a place that more than likely will not become a regular for us (due to the distance from home), that we would try a few different things. We started off with the ribs of course, and pepper empanadas. Yummmmm. The ribs were all hubby raved about. Nice, tender, fall off the bone meat, drenched in a Coca Cola based sauce. Delicious! The empanadas were also a great hit. I thought the hubby would hate them, because he has this weird beef with peppers, but he liked them!!! They were soooo good. Just the right size and the toppings were perfect. 2/2. Our next round consisted of the mole rub wings and guacamole served with chips and tostones. This was a little backwards of us, but whatever. The wings were perfectly cooked. And by that, I mean, the skin was perfectly crisped while the inside was juicy. The flavor was unique, but in a good way. The homemade ranch was delicious!!! Tastes more like a chipotle aioli. The guacamole was very good also. I have never had guacamole with tostones, but it was a good pair on their part. I actually liked it better than the chips. The chips seemed to be homemade and fresh. I wish I knew how much this dish brought before we ordered it. We were so full and left at least half of it. I kind of wish I had it right now! The restaurant itself is so cool. I love that it's an old colonial house and that they use each room in the building to seat guests. Another great meal at Perro Salado. Yummy margaritas (by the pitcher!) It was a cold and rainy night- we really enjoyed the kale/white bean salad which was warm and comforting. Seared mahi mahi tacos were delish! Service was great! Music (live classic rock- like Stevie nicks and James Taylor "fire and rain" and that song "old time rock and roll") was bad and that dragged the ambiance down, but we were feeling so awesome from our margaritas and yummy food. First off the jalapeño Margherita is the best one I've ever had. This says a lot considering I don't love tequila. This one had such a nice flavor along with the kick of the jalapeño. I had heard so many positive things about this place and finally had the chance to dine there outdoors on a beautiful autumn evening. The experience was disappointing. While the staff was friendly, the food was mediocre. The fish in my fish tacos wasn't fresh. My dinner companion had a pork enchilada that looked like a pile of mushy lasagna. Thank goodness we had ordered chips and guacamole, both of which were good, as were the blood orange margueritas. But with entrees so disappointing as to be mostly left on the plate inedible, the visit will be my last. The waitstaff passed our table several times when we were ready to pay the bill and leave. This is a quaint place and location and I have eaten here twice with the same girlfriend. Our first experience was ok, menu is small, but pleasant, but the dinners are only the entree. So for sides you have to order rice and bean etc. And you have to order the chips and salsa too separate. We stopped in with 'no reservations' on July 8th for dinner around 6 ish and saw several tables open on the patio and inside. We went to the hostess to ask how long of a wait. Seems that she was not having a good evening and was not hearing our reply. I said we would wait the 20/30 minutes for an inside table and she said the other tables were 'reserved' but nobody there. My friend said that we would take the first available. The hostess offered a reserved table inside, said we would have to be finished with our dinner within the hour to have that table and the server would drop the check to move us out for the 'reservation'. We noticed that there were 3 tables available besides the 2 top they gave us. My girlfriend said sure we will take it, the hostess said just a few minutes, then asked us again what we were doing.. which ticked off my girlfriend who said, "Why are you so rude" to us we said yes. The hostess said she did not hear us and we were sitting right there... it was not that busy... and nobody else was waiting at the time, or they were outside. We took the 'reserved table' and ordered our food, never received our guacamole, to go with our chips, we both had a blood orange margarita, which was very good. I had the enchiladas with the beef they were alright but no beans and rice just 2 enchiladas. Our waitress had waited on us before and the service was dump and go and dropped the check. Meanwhile during our dinner, the other tables on the patio remained vacant while we ate our 'FAST DINNER' and the table next to us was seated with two ladies who waited 10 minutes for a server to come greet them, so they up and left. We paid our check, and both used the restrooms, which I encountered one of the kitchen staff walking down the hallway to the kitchen with 2 containers of pulled meat in them 'OPENED" no cover on the not even foil which I found vary offensive for food preparation & health. It's said that both of us tried this place twice and had not so good experiences. Dining should be an enjoyable experience not a 'Stressful one and rushed'. read more

Enjoyed dinner here on Friday evening. I was late by about 20 minutes to the reservation time but the table was still available. The food was really good. We ordered the watermelon margarita. I didn't really taste the watermelon from the drink. It was a good drink though. We really enjoyed the queso and chips and chipoltle shrimp appetizer. I didn't like that our food showed up well before we finished apps. The table was tiny so it didn't fit and we had to move apps onto our plates to make room. Not a big deal but I'd prefer better timing. My husband ordered the enchilada and I ordered the lobster quesadilla. Both were good. We would've liked a more balanced enchilada. It seemed alot of cheese and sauce on one side and then chicken on the other. The lobster was really good but portion was like Wtf and wtf on price as compared to the portion. It is half a quesadilla and then cut in 4. Not what I'm use to when ordering a quesadilla for I believe $23-$28... can't remember the price. I wouldn't order this again. We ordered dessert which was tasty but the chocolate lava cake come with two whip creams. I think they should not serve the mango one because it was not good and replace with ice cream. Just one scoop! It was our fault for assuming it came with ice cream based on previous experiences at other restaurants. Our service was pretty good and it wasn't overly loud either. TL:DR: this place has mice and the workers basically ignored us when we informed them of this despite us spending over $100 here. Here's the full: Wow this was one of the worst dining experiences of my life. My fiancé and I were in town from Boston for a nice weekend together. We saw the good ratings, and came here excited for some Mexican food and delicious drinks. We ordered drinks, apps, and mains. A minute into eating my burrito, I saw a mouse scuttle across the floor in the upstairs dining room area. I immediately informed my server. He said "oh no! Really?! I'll let the kitchen know". I couldn't eat any more of my burrito and had over 2/3 of it left. I started feeling really uncomfortable. The server came back and said "all done" even though he saw I clearly had stopped eating after informing him of the mouse and he made no mention of having told the kitchen what I had said. I said yes thank you. We quickly wrapped up, and my fiancé and I yet again saw a mouse scuttling from one place to another. I told the server again that 100% there was a mouse (maybe multiple) in this building. He said something similar - "oh no! Sorry about that" but no mention of how I had left the majority of my food and no mention of "we can comp your burrito" - nothing like that. We went downstairs and told another worker in the kitchen. He said to us "yes sorry about that this is an old house and you know it's cold outside so...". My fiancé and I were somewhat in shock and absolutely ready to get out of there so we said "ok we understand thank you" and left. Beyond this place having mice, I cannot believe how poor their service was. We almost felt like WE had to be apologetic that we saw mice in this restaurant... any restaurant with decent service would have been extremely apologetic and at least attempted to comp part of our meal after seeing that we had trouble eating after seeing this mouse. The guacamole is made to order and the smokey tomato salsa is amazing. Try a few small plates, like the bbq ribs and tacos. Perro Salado is located a historic home that is one of the oldest in Newport and said to be haunted by its former owner, a Navy captain from the 1700's. That's pretty cool. Being built in that time period means that the restaurant has low ceilings, separate rooms, and tiny doorways, lending a cozy, dark, and mysterious element to the vibe of the restaurant (great for dates!). During the summer, they have an outdoor area strung with lights and candles, and nestled between some old trees. That's also pretty cool. Coolest thing about Perro Salado, though, no doubt: the food. The menu is relatively small, free of the jacked-up cheesiness that has become Americanized Mexican food, tastefully inventive, and always fresh. Their salads are always divine; and their pork carnitas is PERFECT. Their drink menu includes all of the classics - fresh flavors for their margaritas, no sticky red strawberry frozen slurpies, and appropriate tequila recommendations to accompany each flavor. They also have vertical and horizontal tequila flights for the more adventurous taste-tester. I am a big fan of tequila, and to be able to sip several for under twenty bucks is schweet! read more

This would be a great place, if it weren't for the staff. We have been there three times. Each time we are really hoping to have a better service experience, but in fact each time it is worse. The staff just seem absolutely miserable. Everyone. The hostess, the bartenders (especially the chubby blonde haired chap with the beard...), the servers... Us:"yes" Hostess:"ok, it's going to be a while, we're really busy" My friend:"what's that grapefruit beer on tap?" Bartender:"it's grapefruit beer." My friend:"is it a white ale or..." Bartender:"I'm not sure" My friend:"ok, can I try it?" Bartender:"you're not going to like it" My friend:"ok. Could I just try it, I really like grapefruit" Bartender: sigh "sure" (pours one sip of beer and hands to friend) My friend: (drinks one sip of beer) "yah that's kind of bitter, I think I'll just get an IPA" Bartender:"I told you dude you should have listened to me" Anyway, every single time we have been there it has been misery with the staff. Last time we sat next to another couple who was sharing the same waitress and after she had made an off-comment to them we caught each other's eye and could only laugh and ask each other why she was having such a bad day. So, we won't go back, despite the food being decent and the atmosphere being pretty neat. It's hard finding good help, but is it hard finding help that isn't downright nasty? Good luck! The space is extremely cramped, and I am sure that it gets annoying asking people to move while you have plates of food and drink to deliver, but you are in a service job, at least pretend to be happy and polite! read more

I'm baffled by how awful and fantastic this place can be. Awful: Carnitas Enchilada: very dry meat topped with wayyyyy too much cheese. Our server was very accommodating about it and took it off our check. Duck Salad: a great cold glob of duck skin on top. Chilled duck lard is not that appetizing. Also, the duck breast was over-seasoned and overcooked. When you overcook duck it tends to taste like liver. Ribs: the server told us that this was their "special." Something that they'd never take off the menu. I asked how it was made and she said it's a house secret, she also wouldn't talk about the ingredients. Intrigued, we ordered it and it turned out to be just your standard ribs smothered with molasses. It had some dry and grizzled areas besides being too sweet... not exactly a magical experience but we were hungry and ate it. Just don't believe the hype. Fantastic: Mezcal: I'm impressed they have this! Not even great mexy restos in Manhattan do. We tried the flight of them for $16 and it was very tasty and fun. I've never gotten to try them all in a row and compare before. Perro Salado is a little stingy on the pour though, I get it, that stuff is expensive--- but people notice when your hand is uneven for certain villages. Margaritas: Just bliss. I really loved my blood orange marg. It was like a Mexican bellini. I've never had one before and was really pleased with the taste and rustic presentation. Guac: Oh yum! I loved that they sprinkled toasted pumpkin seeds on top. Okay: Lamb chops with pumpkin seed mole: That mole is very flavorful and the toasted pumpkin seed flavor adds a lot of depth--- not just to the taste but also to the texture. I came to Perro Salado for the first time this past Friday for a wedding rehearsal dinner. It was my first time in Rhode Island so I was excited to see how the restaurant scene was. The place itself was well decorated, the staff was very friendly, and the food looked delicious. Because I was part of the rehearsal dinner party, there was a set menu for us to choose from. I have about a million food allergies, which makes it difficult for me to find things at restaurants I can eat in the first place, but with a limited number of menu of options, there was nothing I could eat. As this is a regular occurrence for me, I made sure to eat a little something to tide me over before I arrived. My server, Daniel, politely asked me what I'd be ordering and I politely declined. He asked if I had food allergies and offered to have something specially made for me. I told him my food allergy list was about as long as the neverending story and that I'd be OK with nothing. He courteously informed me that there HAD to be something he could have them whip up for me, and started asking me in detail about different foods and whether or not I could eat them. I ended up with a fairly simple dish, but it was cooked to perfection, plated attractively, and downright delectable. I'm used to getting the brush off from servers or the eye roll or just the irritated face when I start asking questions about menu items because of my food allergies, so I've just stopped ordering things if I can't find anything on the menu that I wouldn't have to alter dramatically, and often times when at restaurants with friends, I end up only enjoying the social environment and going hungry. Daniel was very sweet and genuinely just wanted me to enjoy my experience at Perro Salado and turned ordering my meal, which is usually a mountain, into a molehill, making sure that I had enough to eat and I was satisfied with my meal. I have not had such a pleasant experience with a server (or restaurant for that matter) since before I had so many food related issues to deal with, if ever. It was so lovely to look around at everyone else's delicious plates and look down to see that I actually had one too, and one that wouldn't make me sick. Everyone else at the party raved about the quality of the food as well. I am giving this place 5 stars not only for the quality of the food, ambiance, and generally good customer service, but also for the kind efforts and above and beyond customer service from my server, Daniel, to make sure my experience was one I'd remember and enjoy. read more

Since moving back to Newport, this is my "place" I take people when they come into town. The food is GREAT. I tend to hang in the bar area as the bartenders, while busy, they are still are still attentive. And Happy. The margaritas are the shiz, and the $7 menu is pretty great as well! Oh, whats that? You're hungover from Saturday night and need a ginormous plate of food to soak up the booze? Yup. Perro does Brunch. Its only on Sundays and it starts at Noon. We found this place completely by accident. We were parking our car and saw the cool sign and the twinkling of the patio lights. Having lived in San Diego for the past 5 years, and developing a taste for good mexican, we thought we'd give it a try. The food is not "mexican dive" like most of us think but, it is really good, upscale fresh and tasty !!!! We started with chips, salsa and guacamole - which was pricy at $11. But, one taste and I forgot the price. The guac was chunky (which I Love) and just the right amount of seasoning - not overly garlicky. My husband had a sticky rib appetizer that was so flavorful - the ribs were slow cooked and fell off the bone yet they were finished crispy on the outside and smothered in a subtle seasoned mexican hoisin sauce. (the portion was enough for a meal). I started with a special beet salad - It was HUGE - almost too big for one person - it was tasty. Next time, I would get it undressed so it would stay better if I took half home. Because it was so delicious, goat cheese, salty walnuts, watercress, beets...I over indulged and ate the whole thing!!! It was very good. We were both full by the time dinner came. I tasted my entree and and took the rest home. I had carnitas tacos - honestly they were tasty but, I was very full. They did not taste like the carnitas I've had before but it was very good. I am used to carnitas that is simplly slow cooked with lots of cilantro, garlic, lime and cumin - and no sauce. This was delicious but, not what I would think of as traditional as it almost tasted like a pulled pork in a dark mollassas (spelling?) bar b q sauce. My daughter, who LOVES Chipotle carnitas...liked the meat but, was not a huge fan of the sauce. I thought it tasted really good, just different than I've had before. My husband had the quessadilla - he has a huge appetite and literally, after the ribs appetizer - he was working hard to finish...but, because it tasted so good...he did! The atmosphere is perfect for a small group or a date - great music, lots of candles - feels very comfortable. We enjoyed ourselves! The other tables around us were also enjoying the food and atmosphere. Yesterday was my second time at Perro Salado, the food each time was excellent, the avocado frites are delicious, guacamole super fresh, quesadillas yummy. Margaritas can be tricky if they're not made right ----- not an issue here they are very tasty! The blood orange margarita is my fav Both times I sat at the bar, the first time the back bar which has about eight seats, bartender was attentive and didn't hover, was on point Second time we sat at the front bar, (5 seats) Zach, the bartender was congenial, made a great drink and provide a great service. My only gripe would be from a customer service perspective. The restaurant serves brunch on Sunday till 3pm and then closes till 5 when they re-open for dinner at 5pm. We arrived at the restaurant at 4:50 .... yesterday it was -7 degrees with a much colder windchill (-20) in Newport- The employees that were in the restaurant wouldn't allow us inside until exactly 5 o'clock even though there were 3 people sitting at the back bar enjoying cocktails while they waited for 5 o'clock to order dinner, now I get they don't want people hanging around the very tiny front entranceway because it is very tight spot right inside the door but have some compassion for the folks that want to spend $275.00 in your restaurant! Perro Salado is Newport's newly opened Mexican restaurant and, unlike so many other "Mexican" joints, I can safely report that this is the real deal. The chef is a salty, experienced guy who knows his stuff--the fish tacos, a favorite, are whole filets of fish, fried in light batter, topped off with a heaveny chipotle mayonnaise, scallions and cilantro. And you get three of the suckers. It's a big, delicious meal. The menu ranges from classic Mexican dishes like the tacos, to skirt steak, a taqueria menu with things like braised ribs, shrimp dishes, and for dessert, grilled pineapple. The margaritas are fresh--watermelton, passionfruit, and spicy cucumber--but deadly. The beer menu has little, if any domestics, and has a great selection of liquers and specialty tequilas. But the best part is the ambiance. The historical 3-story house was built at the turn of the 18th century and once belonged to some war general. The place is a stop on Newport's ghost tour. The owners gutted it, renovated it, made it distinct and comfortable, not over-the-top theatrical like some Mexican joints can be. Colorful tiles adorn walls, there are two small bars that emphasize comfort and are intimate and warm--the front bar overlooks the open kitchen where you can see all the kitchen crew in action. There's two floors of dining and an awesome patio where an old tree makes its home, right in the center of it all. They recently began brunch which is impressive but I've yet to try. I scoped out the menu and it made my mouth water. This ain't your typical huevos rancheros. This place is a great addition to the bland homogenization Newport has seen--it has personality, charm, and, with ghosts possibly looming, just a little bit of danger. read more

Wasn't impressed when we first came because they were 20 minutes late with our reservation and had to "set up the table." Also, we were confused with the servers because each one told us the specials when we had already heard them. Also, the first floor by the bar was 90 degrees and there was no AC? I also didn't have a plate, and had to remind them twice until they finally brought one. The lighting is also strangely dark. I had to hold my menu up to the candle to read it. We started off with the guac and chips. The guac was amazing, and they gave us a lot. We also got three pitchers; one of the house margarita, sangria, and white sangria. I only tried the house margarita but it was strong (in a good way), and limey. I didn't want to order an entree since we were going out after and I didn't want to be too full, so I just got a short rib beef quesadilla. The portion was pretty big for $10; I didn't even finish it all (which says a lot). It was honestly the best quesadilla I've ever had. The beef was so tender and flavorful, and they covered it with stalks of cilantro (easy to pick off if you're not a cilantro fan). I was really upset that I wasn't able to finish it because it was so good. My friends also raved about their dishes. I keep dreaming of the day I can go back to Newport to eat here again. read more
