Came Saturday night for date night and was charmed by this house-turned-restaurant. The place is cozy with mood lighting, tight tables, and fireplaces. empanadas: (they change based on chef's choice) laid on a bed of spinach, pico, and crema, served warm with the flakey outside and tender sweet potato inside; a good portion for the price carne asada plate with sweet potato and brussel sprouts: their special for the day, love the variety of veggies and protein on one plate, had fun making myself steak tacos with the tortillas but wished I had more chimichurri or other sauce/cheese like the steak quesadilla Steak quesadilla: this was so flavorful! The cheese, steak, and chimichurri were so savory, and comes with a big side salad to cut the richness (surprised it wasn't with the typical rice and refried beans) Overall I was impressed with the restaurant's ability to offer elevated, classic Mexican fare that dolled out more plant-based (side) dishes. The food came out fresh and well-made. It's certainly not cheap (the price of our bill would have been $80), but there are cheaper options on the menu. Great place! read more

TLDR: Cool atmosphere, good drinks, average to sub-par food, and average to sub-par service. We got the chips and salsa and side guac, queso fundido, chicken fajitas, and pork sticky ribs (not featured) with margaritas. Best part of the meal were the drinks and chips and salsa/guac. Salsa was nice and smoky and had a good consistency and the guac was solid. Drinks were good also, nothing crazy but enjoyable. The queso fundido was good but not the consistency of queso. Taste-wise I thought it was good but it was a fork and knife plate and not a dip. Chicken fajitas were very disappointing. The skillet wasn't hot and it looked like the chicken and veggies had just been chopped up and lightly sautéed and thrown in the skillet. Sticky ribs were fine but they were way too sweet. They honestly tasted like maple syrup and I wasn't expecting them to be that sweet. Overall giving 3 stars but it's a soft 3. Price was around $130 and it was not worth the money at all. If you want a cool place to get drinks then it's good but not for food. read more

Bottom line, the Emperor has no clothes. Meh food and very nice ambiance. After seeing some of the laudatory reviews here and recommendations of friends we finally tried Perro Salado. We don't understand the hype. The staff being insouciant and unfriendly didn't help. Then there was the admonition to scan the code to view the menu on line - pretty standard stuff, except when the cell signal is too weak to connect and no WiFi is available. Paper menus are grudgingly provided. The Farmers Salad special was swimming in way too much dressing. Maybe it was to conceal greens wilted past their best if used by date? The tricolor carrots were a nice touch though. The entrees elicited a reaction of 'that's it?!' Mushroom tacos were surprisingly small and bland. Appetizer sized. They looked good (especially if you had a magnifying glass), promising with cilantro and green sauce, but the flavor and taste had departed for the weekend. Nothing bad, just not... good. Chicken enchiladas were OK, and just that. OK, and nothing more. Also on the bland side, though the chicken meat itself was good. The ambiance is what Perro Salado has going for it. And not much else. Interior is a rabbit warren of rooms in a historic house, eclectic decor, inviting bar. The outdoor patio is especially nice with a trellis and fairy lights, with a full size tree growing in the middle of it. Overall the atmosphere gets 4 stars, but the food no more than 2 stars (= average 3 star review, generously). We couldn't think of a single reason to come here over La Taqueria Vecina, a MUCH better Mexican restaurant with VASTLY better food literally just around the corner. Especially at the prices charged. We left feeling slightly taken. We get it that the restaurant business is tough these days, and applaud and appreciate those sticking to it. But a restaurant needs to give some reasons to go there, and we couldn't find any for Perro Salado. Unfortunately, for us it was a one and done. read more

Words cannot adequately describe how much I enjoyed this place but I'll try... Everyone at our table was blown away by the flavors. Going in, I wasn't sure what to expect, since New England isn't really known for its Mexican food. Since our meal earlier this evening, I've thought about the food several times since. The margaritas are excellent, chips and guac are the best I've had outside of Mexico, chipotle corn was great, shishito peppers great, quest fondito great, and lobster quesadilla great. I imagine the other dishes were amazing as well. It's not cheap but also not expensive. It could be 5x the price and I'd still pay. I'll be back often! Based on my experience, I could not believe how there could be any 1-star reviews. You can read through them if you want a laugh... people complain about the dumbest stuff. Hello Perro, As one of my favorite restaurants I value your food and hope you value my feedback. I've been a long time customer and have always loved the steak quesadilla. Recently when visiting I noticed the steak quality has heavily deteriorated. Sad! It went from a delicious flank steak to a shaved steak you may get at Arby's. Oh and the price went up? Shrink-flation is real I guess... My second feedback is Gustavo was very rude. He hit on the men at the table and ignored the women. He rushed to turn the table and didn't take feedback well when I mentioned the steak quality. He was hostile after this and not customer friendly. Is the question "how is everyone's food?" just rhetorical now? He kind of ruined our night haha. I hope management does something about both of the prior raised concerns. read more

Mexican food in New England is always a crapshoot, but this is the worst example of white people Mex that I've tasted in recent memory. I ordered carnitas tacos, which consisted of a mound of unseasoned crockpot pork shoulder atop refried beans (??), with chunks of bacon (?!) on top. Had to beg for hot sauce to try to salvage the situation, but still so remarkably bad I couldn't eat them. While my partner's beef quesadilla was nothing to write home about, it was edible and the margaritas were A-okay! I'd avoid this one if doing more than drinking. read more

With new normal, they are slammed - so book early. Great and friendly service. Cozy spot. Good luck on finding parking. Cocktails are well priced (for Newport); however found their "spicy margarita" very bland. The chips and guac and salsa is a real bargain - enough for 4 and a LOT of guac. Entrees were fish tacos, chicken enchilada, and some sort of burrito. Portions are hefty so some may be taking something home. We came here on a whim after feeling Mexican food, and after hearing from a fellow foodie friend it was their favorite in Newport. We sat outside for a bit to wait for them to open, and marveled at the historic relevance that the house had with it's Navy history (cool idea, check it out online). Once inside, we were greeted and seated in the back bar area. The menu was pretty adventurous takes on traditional items, which delighted me and made my hubby wary. We started with a blood orange margarita, and chips with guac and tostones. For our meal, I ordered the short rib tacos, and he ordered the carnitas quesadilla. When it comes to guac, we both prefer a slightly medium chunky texture with veggies, and salty chips. Our guac had huge pieces of avocado that weren't totally ripe which made it really hard to cut with a chip, and the chips were super overly salty with some spicy seasoning, which overpowered the guac. Our entrees were not better, my taco was soggy, literally pooling in meat juice, and his quesadilla had so much cheese, he felt like it was uneven, with some areas cheese pouring out, and some areas no cheese at all. The seasoning on our entrees was also off, mine was very bland, with only a star anise or fennel flavor coming forward, and his was covered in sauces, both crema and hot sauce. We thought we had given them the benefit of the doubt by catching them fresh before the dinner rush and not on a weekend, but this experience left us feeling disappointed with the food and the flavors. I really thought this would be a chance for them to shine, but sadly they did not. The ambiance was also weird, given that the restaurant is in a house, and we sat in the back room all by ourselves when there were tables with others open in closer rooms. I really enjoyed our experience here at Perro Salado. My boyfriend was craving Mexican and I was looking for a nice walk. Don't count out this section of Newport. Big flavors and awesome atmospheres. We did not have a reservation, and if you choose to go, I recommend getting one so that you can sit on the patio. It looked awesome. We had a table to ourselves in their upstairs section which honestly was nice too. They can definitely accommodate groups. The chips, salsa, and guacamole were our starter. The salsa is homemade and delicious. I would've eaten it on it's own to be honest. Tons of flavors. Our entrees were incredible. I had the grilled romaine Caesar salad with blackened shrimp. I think grilled romaine is such a treat and this was so crisp and delicious. The blackened shrimp are SPICY (which I loved), but if you're on the fence, just know, the spice is HIGH! My boyfriend's steak quesadilla was insanely good. I had a little bite and a twinge of regret for not getting one! It could easily be split between two people and came with a little side salad on the plate which got rave reviews. All in all, great atmosphere and fresh, unique flavors. There is no way to do Perro justice with a review. Passionfruit margs here are the finest in the state (maybe anywhere) with a nice tang. The sticky ribs and avocado fries are a must. My daughter and I went here for dinner and had a wonderful experience. At first we were not happy with the table we were seated at. I went back to the host assuming he'd tell us we couldn't be moved as the restaurant was pretty full. But he happily moved us to a quieter and less noisy table upstairs. We were so glad! He was very nice and wanted us to be happy - I was thrilled with that. Our waiter was also great - he was super helpful and always available when we needed him. My husband and I walked into this place while exploring Newport during our first night in town. It's located in a pretty building and it seemed to have great ambiance. We went there for an early dinner, around 4 pm, and were seated immediately. The staff was very friendly and our waitress was attentive and helpful. We started off with the avocado fries as recommended by the waitress. I wasn't sure I'd like the taste of warm avocado but the fries were pretty good! I then had the Asparagus & Mushroom tacos. We had come here on a Saturday night for my husbands birthday and it did not disappoint. We has reservations and the place was packed with a 45 minute wait time for walk in, but we were seated right away and had a table waiting. It feels as if you're sitting in someones dining room in an old style home and had a fire place to keep you warm! We decided on the empanada appetizer, lobster quesadilla and fish tacos for entrees. The sangria was weak. I don't think there was any liquor, just a pitcher of ice mostly. It was supposed to be red but was more of a light pink, I don't recommend. The elote was really good but after cutting the corn off the cob there was only about 1/4 cup of corn, not worth $7.00. The salsa was really good and that's about it. I haven't been to eat at Perro Salado in what seems like FOREVER, and really, what the heck was I waiting for to make a triumphant return visit?! Now that it's starting to really feel like summer in Newport, what better way to celebrate the welcome change of seasons than by kicking back under a gorgeous petal laden tree on the patio of an adorable cantina-style restaurant with a fresh squeezed Blood Orange Margarita? I can't think of any way I'd rather spend my evening! We came here on Saturday night for dinner, and thank goodness I had the foresight to call ahead for reservations! Even though we aren't quite in peak summer season craziness yet, Perro Salado still fills up on weekend evenings with folks who are clued in to this truly hidden gem restaurant! Because of the reservation, we were seated right away in the back room, which also featured a cozy bar where diners can drink and carouse the night away. Since my last visit, I've discovered the wonders of the Sticky Pork Ribs, which are their signature appetizer. They are truly addictive, doused in a sweet and savory housemade Mexican Coca Cola sauce, and one of the heartiest and all around best appetizers in the entire city. We also got an order of Avocado Fries, which were crisp and refreshing, especially with the addition of the flavorful and decadent chipotle crema dipping sauce. Yelpers on a budget will be wise to take note of the generous check in offer - an order of their homemade chips and salsa. I'm usually the first one to turn up my nose at tortilla chips when out for dinner, but trust me, you won't want to sleep on these! The massive portion comes to the table in an overflowing basket hot and fresh from the fryer, alongside a healthy serving of refreshing and spicy salsa. DELICIOUS! I can't believe we had room for entrees! We both opted for the Quesadilla, mine with the Tamarind Braised Beef, and my friend's with the Chicken Tinga. Quesadillas might be the Mexican equivalent of a grilled cheese sandwich, but Perro Salado takes 'em to the nth degree, with rich and meaty fillings, creamy Oaxaca cheese, crisp tortillas, and toppings like a green herb chimichurri sauce, which adds a welcome burst of lightness to this otherwise heavy meal. We also split a side of Yucca Fries, served with more of that amazing chimichurri for dipping! Finally, I figured "go big or go home", and we splurged for a slice of Tres Leches Cake to split. It came to the table in all its soft and pillowy wonder, accompanied with fresh whipped cream and a fruity and tangy guava topping. Guava's not for everyone, but it gave the dessert an interesting and unexpected twist. I was a fan. Our feast came to less than $100 for two people, and the portion sizes were very generous. I err on the side of caution with telling people about Perro Salado so as to not ruin how special this "off the beaten path" eatery is. However, you, dear reader, are now in on the secret! This is a great restaurant. I love the ambiance with the candles at each table. The avocado fries are actually huge chunks of avocado, battered and fried!
