I haven't been to eat at Perro Salado in what seems like FOREVER, and really, what the heck was I waiting for to make a triumphant return visit?! Now that it's starting to really feel like summer in Newport, what better way to celebrate the welcome change of seasons than by kicking back under a gorgeous petal laden tree on the patio of an adorable cantina-style restaurant with a fresh squeezed Blood Orange Margarita? I can't think of any way I'd rather spend my evening! We came here on Saturday night for dinner, and thank goodness I had the foresight to call ahead for reservations! Even though we aren't quite in peak summer season craziness yet, Perro Salado still fills up on weekend evenings with folks who are clued in to this truly hidden gem restaurant! Because of the reservation, we were seated right away in the back room, which also featured a cozy bar where diners can drink and carouse the night away. Since my last visit, I've discovered the wonders of the Sticky Pork Ribs, which are their signature appetizer. They are truly addictive, doused in a sweet and savory housemade Mexican Coca Cola sauce, and one of the heartiest and all around best appetizers in the entire city. We also got an order of Avocado Fries, which were crisp and refreshing, especially with the addition of the flavorful and decadent chipotle crema dipping sauce. Yelpers on a budget will be wise to take note of the generous check in offer - an order of their homemade chips and salsa. I'm usually the first one to turn up my nose at tortilla chips when out for dinner, but trust me, you won't want to sleep on these! The massive portion comes to the table in an overflowing basket hot and fresh from the fryer, alongside a healthy serving of refreshing and spicy salsa. DELICIOUS! I can't believe we had room for entrees! We both opted for the Quesadilla, mine with the Tamarind Braised Beef, and my friend's with the Chicken Tinga. Quesadillas might be the Mexican equivalent of a grilled cheese sandwich, but Perro Salado takes 'em to the nth degree, with rich and meaty fillings, creamy Oaxaca cheese, crisp tortillas, and toppings like a green herb chimichurri sauce, which adds a welcome burst of lightness to this otherwise heavy meal. We also split a side of Yucca Fries, served with more of that amazing chimichurri for dipping! Finally, I figured "go big or go home", and we splurged for a slice of Tres Leches Cake to split. It came to the table in all its soft and pillowy wonder, accompanied with fresh whipped cream and a fruity and tangy guava topping. Guava's not for everyone, but it gave the dessert an interesting and unexpected twist. I was a fan. Our feast came to less than $100 for two people, and the portion sizes were very generous. I err on the side of caution with telling people about Perro Salado so as to not ruin how special this "off the beaten path" eatery is. However, you, dear reader, are now in on the secret! This is a great restaurant. I love the ambiance with the candles at each table. The avocado fries are actually huge chunks of avocado, battered and fried! Great food in a historic home. Think upscale Mexican food - the queso is real cheese, not liquid! Nachos only on Mondays. The beef short ribs are DELICIOUS. Most of their tacos are in Corn tortillas, not flour. Blood orange margaritas available by the pitcher (6 glasses per pitcher!) Easily accommodated a large group. Pretty good mexican food in Newport. Parking is pretty tough even in the off season. We had fish tacos, chicken tacos, and chicken quesadilla. Everything was pretty good, the chicken tacos could use a little more flavor. The quesadilla was very cheesy and therefore delicious. Staggering good Mexican food and drink (with a caveat) My lovely wife and I recently dined here and were deeply impressed. Both the cilantro jalapeno and blood orange margaritas were exemplary. And the Carne Asada and decobbed chipotle 'street' corn specials were delicious. But we were most surprised by the lobster quesadilla. Approaching it from a 'Why not?' perspective (and attracted by the salad that came with), the lobster was amazingly enough not overcooked and the dish came together well. The caveat is the guacamole, which was in a word...awful. We didn't realize until it was too late that the salt and crunch accompaniment to our margaritas was best avoided. When we looked around the patio at the other tables we saw that most of them had ordered the nice little cones of chips (and we presume salsa). Which brings us to the patio which was nothing short of magical on a warm June evening. Our waiter was attentive and the entire experience quite lovely. Personally this place is good, but not my favorite. The blood orange agua fresca is amazingly fresh but doesn't taste like it has any sugar at all which leaves it tasting bitter and sour but it is definitely delicious if you don't enjoy sugary drinks. I visited this place on the RI Red Food Tours, and it's the first (and only) Mexican Food restaurant I've visited east of...well...the first in New England. (I grew up in New Mexico and I miss our red and green chile like an Italian misses true mozzarella. And no one here even knows what red and green chile IS.) It's a super cool setting We tried these pork ribs that were marinated for maaaaany hours in a coca-cola and brown sugar sauce, and they were SO DELICIOUS (after I picked the cilantro off. Surprisingly, adding cilantro to a dish does not make it "Mexican." However! Kudos for making the cilantro removable!) The meat fell right off the bone, and I basically licked the plate. Came here for dinner and we had chips, salsa, and guacamole to start, followed by an order of cheese enchiladas and Korean duck tacos. The waitress was friendly and attentive. As people who lived in Southern CA for decades, we felt the food was ok, but rather bland. The salsa had no spice or salt to it at all. It tasted like slightly smoky tomato. The avocado and tomato pepita topping used to make the guacamole were very fresh, but it also lacked flavor. We felt it could've used some salt, garlic, cilantro, jalapeño, lime juice. Never coming back. We showed up at 8 PM for our reservation and had plans to go comedy show right around the corner at 9:30. We thought that would be enough time to have drinks and a nice meal. We ordered drinks and avocado fries to start and were proactive and ordered our entrees too with the app. The avocado fries came out fairly early, and the drinks took a solid 25 minutes. The waiter came back probably about 4 times saying our food should be coming soon. 45 minutes later, and at 9:15, we still didn't have our food. At that point we needed to head out to our show without having our dinner because we didn't want to be late. We asked the GM to take our entrees off our bill, and were told "Oh but your food just came". We've been waiting for an hour for our food at that point. We didn't want it. I've never encountered service so slow and the audacity to have an attitude about it from staff. There were no apologies about the service. Our food was cold by the time we ate it cause we did not receive any of our sides with our meals. The salsa was just tomato sauce and the chips had no flavor. I'm not a big fan of over use of salt in restaurant food so we were glad the chef didn't use too much of it. This restaurant is located in what I think used to be someone's house, and not a new swanky house with vaulted ceilings and a staircase you could drive a Jeep on. I mean one of those small houses built back when Grover Cleveland was twice president and the tallest person in America was 5'11". They have amazing service along with making the indoor and outdoor environment feel safe given current times! I went with the braised short rib quesadilla and wow the flavors of the chipotle/chimichurri sauce and the juicy short rib was delightful. Below is another picture of the sticky pork ribs topped with pickled onions and cilantro that fell right off the bone when you picked them up. Highly recommend great food and vibes. Cool ambiance - two separate bars as well as indoor/outdoor seating options. Good sized portions. For reference, was a beautiful summer mid-week evening. Started with a spicy margarita which was delicious (request the straw otherwise it'll be too hot too handle). My partner enjoyed his cocktail but questioned the alcohol content. Appetizers - kale salad was perfect. The right amount of dressing and the white beans were an excellent touch. Now the lobster quesadillas will be something I crave when I consider lobster in the future. A must if you eat here. Finally, we ate the beef enchiladas and fish tacos.
