Good and Bad.. If you're looking for Dog or Cat Food (as the name implies) Pet Food Express is the place to go. Read through all the reviews and can see that they are fairly right on.. The people (guy) did seem nice and helpful.. I was actually looking for some supplies for FISH, there are NO FISH SUPPLIES (ok maybe an endcap with some food / chemicals and a pump. ) I will say you need to use your smartphone and price check.. The items I looked at were water test strips, normally $10 at other stores, there it was $15.. A pump that you can get for $10-$12 in other places was $19 (pretty much double). Maybe others can check and review the Dog / Cat food prices, but the items I checked were all 25%+ more here.. Just check the prices and compare to other local stores.. Store is nice and clean though. read more

This store has exceptionally helpful associates and good products. After suffering with the gassiest dog around, an associate recommended grain-free Taste of the Wild (we went with the salmon) and --TA-DAH!-- it worked! No more room-clearing evenings! Because our dog also has hip dysplasia, I tried one of their chondroitin vitamins. When our dog didn't like them, I came back and they fully refunded that purchase, with an apology for the inconvenience. They always offer to carry the big bag of food out to the car, they offer a dog cookie to stick in my pocket for when I get home, you can wash your dog right there, there's always plenty of parking. This is a great place to go. Everyone is super nice, the selection is good and they will even help you read the labels. I like that there is parking behind, too, as this area can get pretty crowded. I also come here to bathe my mutts and although this is a "purebred posh" kinda crowd, my incredibly fabulous dogs are never treated like second class citizens. Nice selection of grain-free and raw for your dogs and cats. Would love it if they had a better fish section, though. Err, I mean supplies for your fish tank, not fish-flavored food to feed to other animals. My goldfish are loved, too! read more

The Lafayette store is so wonderful! The staff is extremely helpful from the moment you enter! I have a new puppy and they now carry Fromms and well stocked. Today I bought food and treats! And then great toys as recommended by Amy. I will not go to any other store due to the great staff well done! Ps parking is a huge problem as construction workers are using their available spaces in back of store. City won't do anything about this as parking is owned by a private company. Be aware. Such a friendly place! After one of my parents' elderly cats died, the other was lonely and howled. Pet Food Express has cozy cat beds and I got one for the survivor. He took one look, stepped inside and stayed for a week. The howling subsided immediately, and now, 6 months later he has adjusted to his new status as lord of the household (instead of co-lord of the household.) I have been there many times over the years, but this is the first time I took my pooch with me. I loved washing my dog Sadie at the pet store. It saved not only time but wear and tear on my house (and nerves). I didn't even get wet because of the convenient level of the bath and the handy rubber apron! They have their own towels and shampoo, so I needn't have brought my own, though it was handy to have a towel for the damp ride home. Sadie loved Amanda and all the treats she gave her, and we both love her new harness. Having someone knowledgeable fit her gave me confidence that I bought the right thing, but Amanda said I could try it out at home for a week to be sure. She's the bomb! Shop here, you won't be sorry. I just experienced amazing customer service here and wanted to share it. I'm a longtime fan of this company for goodies and baths for our two Australian cattle dogs and our insane cat. Last week I volunteered with a rescue organization to bathe and care for seven dogs just off a flight from Korea. Pet Food Express in Palo Alto let us use their facility. I left my coat there and was facing a three hour round trip drive in the rain from my home in Lafayette to retrieve it. On a whim, I stopped by my local Lafayette location and the manager, Amy, had my coat transferred to their store! What service. I am so grateful. Please support this great business. read more

If I could rate this 10 stars I would! I showed up last night 10 minutes before closing and desperately needed to wash my dog because we took a wrong turn on our hike and were treading through thick weeds. I had thought I was too late and would get turned away, but the staff was very welcoming. I'm a new dog owner and upon washing, there were several ticks. Chris came over to see if I needed anything, and seeing that I was a bit distraught, thoroughly helped me remove all the ticks and provided a special wash that would help too. She was very patient with me and very helpful. I was met with only kindness even though I had kept them 20 minutes past closing. I experienced a similar situation on a previous visit where Chris and the staff were extremely helpful in helping me pick out dog food and toys for my new pup. There is a lot of learning being a new dog owner and having Chris and the team guide me along the way has made it a lot easier. I really won't go anywhere else! read more

I must say this is a review based on customer service, not product. I have been in this store twice. Once for my cat and once for my dog. Both times I was insulted by the girl working. 1st time: We feed our cat Purina One Urinary Formula because he has urinary issues and it is the one food that seems to work. I asked her where I could find it. Her reply, "Ummm, this is a high end pet store. You have to go to a regular supermarket for that kind of food." Not in a "matter-of-fact" way, but in a snobby (you're cheap) way. Okay, sometimes things come out wrong so I came back for my dog's Eukanuba which most consider a very healthy, quality product... 2nd time: I get the food and come up to the counter. The SAME girl asks if I have used Eukanuba before. I say "yes." Then think to myself I wonder why she asked me that so I ask her why she asked. Her response, "Well such-n-such (can't remember the brand) is a much higher quality food and it costs less." Again, with the flip tone. So I say, "well my dog is Ekanuba born and raised and seems to do quite well with it." To which she responded, "suit yourself" and dropped the receipt on the counter even though my hand was out. Seriously, this isn't like Nitro Dog or some boutique pet store. This is a chain like Petco or Petsmart so would it kill you to have a staff that is helpful and humble without the snarky attitude? I came in today with my fifteen year old beagle to find some nail clippers and new diapers ( :[ ). I had an absolutely amazing experience with the fabulous employees. One employee in particular, Peter, clipped my dog's nails! He offered to do it because I didn't know how, and if I had gone to any other pet store I can say without a doubt they would have charged me. But he didn't! He took the clippers right out of the packaging and sat on the ground with my dog making her, and I, feel like we mattered. Unfortunately, they did not carry Wee-Wee diapers in a size large, but they did offer to order them for her. (I ended up buying her some toddler diapers and cutting a hole for her tail, poor little Tina.) Really great people work at this location. Making my beagle and I feel welcome and important. It was like being at a mom and pop pet shop, not a chain store. Tina left with her tail in the air, probably because of the pork ear, but that's enough to have me trust them with all my overweight senior beagle needs. If my dog likes it, I like it too. read more

Today after walking our dogs at Lafayette Reservoir my girlfriend and I decided to use the self service pet wash at Pet Food Express in Lafayette. This store has restored my faith in the Pet Food Express company! This place was completely unlike my previous experience with that horrible little old bald man at the Pleasant Hill location. Right when we walked in the store two super nice people came up to us and offered us treats for our dogs and were so friendly. One young girl and one older gentleman. I wish I had gotten their names. Both of our dogs were totally filthy from our walk and we gave them a nice bath in the dog wash. It is $15 for a wash but we shared because our doggies are so little and they give you shampoo and everything including fresh towels and an apron to wear! Go to Lafayette Pet Food Express and wash your dog! You walk out feeling spoiled and there is no mess to clean up! My little doggie smells like Mango Tango and he loved all the treats and attention he got. read more

My dog and I have become so acclimated to Pet Food Express since it first opened in Lafayette. The place is clean, tidy, and cheerful with nearly anything and everything you need for your pet. Whenever I go there, the staff revels in my dog's presence, commenting on how cute or handsome he is. It makes us feel welcome and gets my dog very excited...especially when they give him free treats! I go to Pet Food Express most often to give my dog a bath in their self-wash station. The price and provisions are great; including three different shampoos, towels, a blow dryer, and of course warm water. Overall, this place is downright perfect, and as long as I live in the Bay Area, I'll never go to Petco or PetSmart again! read more

After a long day at the beach, I took my golden retriever to the Lafayette, CA store for a wash.  I was greeted by a friendly staff that clearly loved animals.  I can't remember whether it was Katie or Kira, but she literally held up my car hammock for me to spray off.  Then, she supplied me with enough soap to complete the job which was necessary since my dog was covered in sand and dirt.  I had some trouble with the water pressure, but they quickly assisted me and I was on my way. It took numerous attempts, but my dog was finally clean.  While cleaning up, Katie and Kira played with my dog, gave her treats, and loved her like she was their own. It was so nice to receive such great customer service.  It's such a rare quality these days. read more

I would like to thank the staff at this location for helping me in a pretty stressful situation today. My spindly-legged chihuahua/greyhound mix dog Finnegan was walking into the store and slipped. He's a pretty frantic boy and a leash puller, so I think it was more a matter of his behavior than a slick floor. He started yelling in pain and couldn't walk on one of his legs. The staff found a dog bed for him, helped me hoist him up on it and drove me over (in an employee's car) to the animal hospital. I really appreciate how quickly they helped. I'm at the vet now and it seems to be a simple dislocation. I'll be stopping by the store after this to say thanks. read more

When I came in to wash my dog there were 0 customers in the store and 3 employees talking around the register. I brought my dog in and two of the employees were gone so I asked the one at the register where I got towels and if they had brushes to use (the one in pleasant hill has let us use brushes before so I didn't know this was an uncommon ask) and she ignored my request for a brush and handed me a towel, then turned to another customer. I start washing my dog and during the 10 min was, I had 2 different customers come ask me to ring them out because no one was in the front. Told both I didn't work there and had no idea where the employees were. I get done washing my dog and head out to leave, there are yet again 0 customers in the store and 3 employees taking around the register. Pretty poor customer service. read more

Pet Food Express is amazing! We have been frequenting this location for a while now and we can't imagine shopping for our pets anywhere else! We have two dogs and three cats, so we end up having to buy things for our pets pretty frequently. Pet Food Express offers a great variety of foods, treats, toys, and accessories for both cats and dogs. The staff at Pet Food Express is extremely friendly and helpful. At a recent visit to Pet Food Express, we found out that they were discontinuing the brand of dog food that we feed our dogs. Not only did the staff point us in the right direction of other great food options for our dog, but they also gave us a coupon for our first and second purchases of our new dog food! On weekends, Pet Food Express also hosts cat adoptions - this is where we met our kitten Brady! Right now parking isn't that difficult, but with a large condo complex being built nearby, parking will probably become more difficult. Highly recommend! read more

Excellent place for pet supplies! They have a great return policy, which is particularly helpful when your animal is a picky eater/ picky with toys/ etc. Yes, Kristi, this is not a place for lower-quality dog food. Eukanuba and Iams and Purina may say they're high quality, but they're not. Compare the ingredients on those to the ingredients in any of the foods in the store. PFE prides itself on carrying foods that are of higher quality. When we went to adopt our first dog, we spent about a week trying to figure out the best food to feed it. I think we came into the store 3-5 times, asking new questions about foods we'd come across, trying to get prices on foods (they'll special order things for you if they can), and trying to figure out what would be best for our doggie-to-be overall. We ended up choosing a food not carried by PFE (Orijen), but the staff knew all about all kinds of dog food anyway. Very, very helpful and professional. Great selection of truly good-for-your-pet products, natural items, and a good selection of such. Don't miss out on the buy 3, get the 4th free! Also I appreciate that PFE works so hard to promote adoption. All the posters in the store are of adopted pets, and they don't sell animals, instead letting adoption groups come in a few times a week to adopt pets out. I LOVE PFE. My dog does as well. She won't let us walk by without dragging us over for a visit! read more

Great pet store with decent prices! The staff is pretty helpful as far as answering questions and suggesting products, but more importantly will let you shop without hassling you to buy more stuff. I suggest buying in bulk when you go, there's always some 4 for the price of 3 deal or something along those lines. Probably my favorite part about the store is the do-it-yourself pet wash. It's way cheaper than a groomer and leaves your bath tub at home dog-hair free. This is my go-to pet store as it feels more like a well stocked small business than a nationwide chain. At Pet Food Express you are treated courteously by staff who know the products on the shelves. When my last dog was ill, the manager went to great lengths to help me find a food she would eat. I've been shopping at their Carmel store since they opened. * Customer friendly policies. * Competitive pricing with matching guarantees. * Immaculately clean premises. * Happy employees with low turnover. * They are more concerned about your pet than just selling stuff. Today I emailed the company about a possible minor problem with a food sample I got.. Five (5) minutes later a got an email from the company president asking for my phone number. 15 minutes later he called me personally to discuss the issue to make sure the matter was taken care of. When I first moved back to this area, with my two beloved rescues dogs, I asked a friend in the industry for a recommendation for pet supplies. She texted immediately: Pet Food Express. She was right! My GS mix has a very sensitive tummy. Short of making her food from scratch (which I have done) the products at Pet Food Express are the only products for her. My far less particular but senior Puggle enjoys the same high quality food (at reasonable prices) and I am frequently asked if she is a puppy. The self-wash option, especially with an epic-shedder, is fantastic! The tubs are easy to access for a GS with hip issues yet high enough that I can bathe them both easily. Towels, several shampoo choices, warm water, and you leave the hair behind, are great options to bathing at home. In particular in the winter! Great products and reasonable prices. Well designed location. What more can you ask for? Wonderful, caring, and knowledgeable staff! My girls LOVE visiting since they get lots of attention from everyone. Cicily (sp?) in particular is so helpful in discussing my girls' needs. If you are in Lamorinda, I can't recommend Pet Food Express highly enough for all the "stuff" your pets need. read more

I've been shopping at Petsmart for years for my cat. I finally got tired of them discontinuing my favorite products and offering no customer service, not to mention being out of everything I need. Today I tried Pet Food Express in Lafayette. My salesperson, Arielle, greeted me when I came in and helped me find what I needed the entire time. I was finally able to find REGULAR cat litter, which nobody else seems to have anymore. She also suggested a new kind of food which my cat INHALED!
