Review for the grooming department: Everyone at the grooming side treat us like family! They are always so happy to see my dog, Leah and she is always happy to see them. I always get a full service bath and they always do a great job. They brush her out real good and use the best smelling shampoos. I usually get a discount coupon via e-mail if she hasn't been there for a while so I love that too. They do have a parking lot and there is a restroom in the store itself. read more

I went to Vetco at this petco location and they are the absolute best! They were able to give me an early appointment seeing how worried I was about my dog's condition despite being fully booked for a month! My first appointment was free and my dog was treated like royalty! I even got a free sample of dewormer and flea tick control medication! Dr Mike was incredibly thorough, kind, helpful and knowledgeable and Joe the front desk manager was incredibly kind, helpful, patient and understanding! They really went above and beyond for me and they were better than any vet I have gone to in Chicago! For your pets needs I 10000% recommend this Vetco clinic at petco and I don't typically praise anyone this much but when it comes to my dog I just can't even word how grateful I am for the kind treatment we've received here and how professional, affordable and kind everyone has been. read more

When your pet need a prescription food its a scary thing. Usually means there is a issue with your pet. I have two big beautiful Maine Coons and one of them almost died in Sept due to some urinary issues. Finding prescription food is also a challenge. I normally get it online or from Pet Smart. After a long work week due to the travel season of the holidays I ran out of dry food this morning. Pet Smart was also out, so I called this store to see if they had any of the Royal Canine. So So food in stock and they had one bag left. I grab my prescription that the vet gave me and I rush over to get the food. As I'm checking out, I hand Lisa my prescription and the she says sorry that one will not work , you need to go take it to our vet so they can rewrite it and then we can sell you the food , but unfortunately our vet is closed for today. I am beyond frustrated by this. and asked for the Manager. When the manager comes out, she proceeds to tell me it's against the law to sell me the food without their own prescription not that it's any different. It's just their vet didn't write it. Now I'm not a rocket scientists or anything , but I know it's not illegal to sell me cat food , when I'm holding a prescription in my hand. Since it's the day after Christmas, I asked her if she would make an exception this one time since I can't go to their vet because it's closed and she said no and proceeds to shame me by calling me a bad parent and said I should've thought of this earlier. I explained that I had a very long work week, unfortunately, and needed to get this food. I then asked her for her corporate number, and she told me I am I am more than capable of finding it myself. I asked if they would write their names down and Haiti told me that I could remember it for myself. I will never shop at the store again. Luckily I was able to find a different store who was capable of understanding basic human decency. It wasn't a Petco. read more

Man I have to say kudos to the crew of this location earlier today (Diana, Jose-cashier, one more associate I forgot his name), but my morning run to this store earlier today is awesome, especially the customer service. Everyone is helpful and caring to the pets and to the customers. It's hard to see that now, especially nowadays. I also asked Diana if my dog chew the "Kong" the toughest one (black) that I bought today if I could still return it? She said, "Yes you can, just have your receipt with you." Good to know that they accept it with no questions ask. Also, I was browsing their fresh treat right by the entrance door and José and another associate didn't even hesitate to gave me an in house treat. Again, thank you. I appreciate it. As I told, Jose, they just made my day. Simple gesture like that makes me even more want to come here often and help them. I will need to see and try their grooming services and see how it is. Went here for puppy class (1&2) with our super anxious and nervous puppy. Ducki was our trainer and was phenomenal at helping our little oreo gain confidence and really guided me and my husband in understanding our dog's needs. Happy to say that oreo is continually getting more comfortable and confident, and a large part of this is thanks to Ducki's patience and guidance during our two classes with her. Not my local Petco but we were driving past doing errands and my boss was running out of chow. Rather than have that sad Cat stare, we ran inside to grab a bag of his fav chow, because yes... he is the boss of me. How this role reversal came about is most likely because cat's are mind Jedi's. lol It's really nice that they have parking. We probably would have went to our local Petco which validates if they didn't. Can I say super NICE! I normally don't ask but we had been running around all day & I had been slamming my water bottle. The folks here could not have been nicer in directing me to the ladies room. Great selection of cat chow & if he wasn't such a fussy lil dude I might have been tempted to try some new things out with him. However he likes what he likes and previous history has show what he doesn't like is the ASPCA down the street's gain. Spoiled is a word that comes to mind about my boss. So we got our bag of my boss's fav chow & the lady at the checkout could not have been nicer. I wish I would have thought to get her name. She was so friendly. read more

I can't really speak for the cat, bird, or ferret end of things, but since becoming a dog dad I've pretty much lived here and loved every visit. Whether in need of food, treats, potty training, nail trimming, leashes, harnesses, chew toys, or just plain old advice, the staff has always been amazingly helpful and friendly. They've also been really great on returns and even after losing a receipt they've let me return things for store credit. There's a free puppy playtime on Saturdays and Sundays which is an awesome way to socialize your dog with the supervision of a professional trainer. It's pretty much a one stop shop for all your pet needs...at least on the dog end of things. read more

This Petco kind of sucks. I mean, Petco itself is good, but this one is not. I never really shopped here since getting my dog, but when I was big into aquariums, I used to (attempt) to buy fish here. All of their fish have the disease known as "Ick," which usually leads to them dying or infecting the rest of your aquarium. I feel sorry for the turtles because they're obviously neglected. Please... Clean... Tanks... That... Contain... Animals... The staff ignores you if they think you might ask them to catch a fish for you, too. The store can be desolate and empty, but full of employees, and you'll see them all scatter to the back room if you walk into the fish department. Try it sometime, you'll see I'm right. read more

I was first a customer here 7 years ago, have gone back a few times now and then, it is close by my house. They differentiate themselves from PetSmart by carrying better quality brands of dog food. They are also nicer employees. The ferret cage with about 6 ferrets, had literally about 20 huge flies in it, swarming around and landing on the poor ferrets. The flies came in through the holes in the top of the enclosure. Clean those litterboxes, the smell gagged me! The prices are a bit high, yes, we all know that. Items you can find online for $5, will commonly be $12 in this store. Dog treats are one expensive item. Once again in a corporate retail store, their "DOG TRAINING" is unprofessional- places like this are part of the reason pets get given up for behavioral reasons. PLEASE never go there for dog training, you will waste your time and learn incorrect techniques, you will accomplish nothing. My clients who go to classes at retail stores usually have only made my job harder, learned the wrong things, and gotten no results in their dogs behavior. I have seen their classes. They do carry Wellness, Blue Buffalo, and Solid Gold pet food, very good holistic foods, and for that they deserve stars. They have reorganized the food section to make it a little nicer, they now have hardwood floors in part of the store which looks nice. A close alternative is Krisers right across the street, their employees are helpful and educated on foods, and they also have an even bigger selection of the all-naturals, prices are about the same. read more

Took my puppy to Petco across from PAWS. We were fortunate to get Judy as trainer. She definitely knows her stuff. She is very knowledgeable and professional. We also attended puppy play time numerous time which Judy also oversees. The puppies loved playing but were monitored very carefully which was important to me because I have a tiny Yorkie. Rambunctious puppies were given "time outs" as needed. I can't recommend Judy highly enough. She's the best! read more

We tried Petco Grooming for the first time two weeks ago and will NEVER be going back! They are not trustworthy! We have two dogs and both get groomed on a regular basis,never had an issue prior to this. We stopped in one day to get some supplies and the associates were so friendly to us we thought, "Why not take our dogs here for grooming?" We made and appointment a few days later dropped them both off for a basic grooming. (bath nails etc..) When we picked up both dogs, they said there was an issue with our older dog and she had a large pocket of fluid on her ear and it was very red and swollen. This was strange and concerned us because she didn't have this when we dropped her off. The Associate argued with us saying yes it was there prior to the appointment and it wasn't their fault. I asked to speak with the groomer directly to find out what happened. The groomer admitted that the pocket of fluid wasn't there and that she had a hard time with our dog cleaning the ears and cutting her nails and she had to hold her pretty tight and that might have caused it. We called our vet ASAP and were told if it got worse to bring her in the next day. The next morning our dog's ear was swollen even more and was so filled with blood we couldn't move/touch her ear. The vet said it is a large Hematoma (bruise) that filled with blood. The vet says they see this type of thing often with groomers. They hold the dog's ear way too tight and it causes a bruise which then fills with blood and can become swollen and infected. They put her on Steroids for 10 days to try and bring the swelling down. If the swelling doesn't go down they need to perform a laser surgery to remove it. I was really shocked! After all these years of taking them to the groomers I have never had this happen! I spoke with the Petco Manager the next day and explained our situation. I asked them to refund the grooming charges and we would cover the vet fees. Seems fair. I would NEVER trust my dogs at the Petco Grooming ever! Stuff happens...they are dogs...maybe it was a bad day or my dog didn't like the grooming, who knows? The fact that they tried cover it up with lies and weren't honest with us is why we won't be returning. read more

This is where my sweet hamboy, Digi, comes from, so I have some emotional ties to it. However, the otherwise nonexistent interactions with employees, sparse selection and prices drive me away. There was one woman who I spoke with during my first visit and she was very compassionate and helpful. Although most of our conversation encompassed all the pets she had waiting for her at home, I felt like she was definitely the right person to talk to about getting a hamster. The next morning, I returned to this location to pick up the enchanting hamster that stood out to me the night prior. The staff were so quiet and apathetic that it caused me a great deal of stress because this was my first mammalian pet (hermit crabs and fish are not difficult to care for) and I was still uncertain of how to handle it. And surely, feeling like a burden to each employee I encountered from the hamster cage to the check out did not lift my spirits as I toted a huge bag of bedding and food under each arm with an edgy hamster in a flimsy cardboard case about a mile home. After that nightmare, I have visited twice more to check out treats and gizmos while strolling Clybourn. They are pricier than Petsmart and I felt uneasy about buying some products because the fixtures were sparse and packages were very dusty. All that being said, I got a great pal out of it, my hamster, Digi. But for better selection, cleaner space and respectful staff, I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

When you adopt a dog at PAWS, Petco is conveniently located across the street for you to spend a couple hundred dollars on a crate, food, poop bags (man those things are expensive), and everything else you need for your new pet. PAWS also tells you not to do Petco's training classes, but with the $20 coupon and $75 reimbursement from the shelter for completing any obedience course, we thought ultimately paying only $15 for 6 weeks of training was worth a try. Now 4 weeks in, we are happy we didn't pay six times as much to go somewhere else. Judy is a good trainer and there was only one other dog in the Adult 1 class, allowing for a lot of one-on-one attention. There's only so much you can accomplish in a one-hour class; the important thing is keeping up with it at home, and they give you weekly homework sheets to do just that. Obviously, Petco holds obedience classes in part because you will most likely leave with a new toy, treats or other things you didn't know you needed. But all of the staff here are really helpful, always give Charlie a cookie, and there are good deals to be found, like 2-for-$5 toys that he shreds within two days. This will remain our pet store of choice for a long time to come. read more

I brought my little pup here on Sunday for grooming services. The grooming staff was extremely kind and helpful! My girl's groomer was Joseph (I think) and he was very sweet to my scared pup. After my girl was done getting fancy we went through the store to grab few things. While in the store an employee handed us a coupon for a pound of free biscuits. At the register the cashier was thoughtful and asked if this was our first time with the groomers, when I said "yes" found us coupon for $5 off. I have never been in another Petco, but this one is fairly small compared to Petsmart. Pros: -Very large selection of dog treats, including the 'treat bar.' -Very large selection of dog clothes (so cute!). -Very large selection of dog food, including specialty and organic brands like Solid Gold (you just can't find this at Petsmart). -Very cute rodents (OMG bunnies!). Cons: -Very small store (maybe it's just this location?!). -Very bad selection of classes (essentially there's just beginner training and then a weird trick class afterward. The prices are lower than Petsmart but the classes don't look as good nor do they have levels beyond beginner). -Higher prices than Petsmart. read more

This is a review of the aquatics department of this store. Petco's with decent aquatics department are hard to come by in the city. While normally I shun big chain shops for quality fish favoring smaller local fish shops, but this particular Petco has a good fish selection and clean well maintained tanks. It's also hard to beat PetCo's 14 day guarantee on freshwater fish when purchases delicate fish. read more

Not much to say about this place ... stanard petco. Take a pass if you're looking to buy fish. Selection is poor ... and about every other tank seemed to have dead or near dying fish in it. I walked past an oscar tank that had 3 of them lying on the bottom breathing heavily while a long dead oscar tankmate (so dead its coloring turned white) was floating around the tank. I won't begin to descibe some of the horrors in the other tanks. Walmart is the only place besides this paticular petco that has sadder looking fish. The only thing I got from here is a lesson in fish diseases. read more

I noticed a lot of the reviews on here are strictly for the grooming department, which I'm sure is fantastic. I have a bearded dragon which requires very little grooming. All he asks is that I keep his tank clean and supply him with veggies and the occasional insect/rodent as a treat. This store seems to keep very loose tabs on their mealworm supplies. I realize this doesn't effect many customers, but every time I go there are cups sitting there, labeled, with 3 month old dates on them. I don't mind handling my pet's food, but opening smelly cups to find a mass mealworm grave is not how I want to spend my shopping experience. I also felt like a total weirdo when the girl at the register refused to handle the very sanitary "Gourmet Rodent" frozen pinky mouse I was purchasing. I realize most people don't buy this stuff at big box pet stores, (esp. in Lincoln Park) but come on! Wheres the love for the reptile peeps? read more

Joseph did a fabulous job with our Rottweiler, Sophie!! She doesn't like getting baths and especially dislikes getting her nails trimmed. But Joseph has a way with her! Not only did he clip them but he was able to clip them nice and short! He's so good with her! I definitely recommend Petco grooming, especially Joseph! read more

I went in person to schedule an appt and they pretty left me standing there, so I finally walked out. Staff would rather be anywhere else than at work. Switching to Kriser. The only reason why this location deserves 4 stars is because of Sarah the dog trainer. We took Lucy here to attempt to put her through a class, but she got kicked out because she was being too possessive. So now, my beauty school dropout dog is left with no training. However Sarah personally contacted me to explain why Lucy might be acting like this and gave us a few remedies to the problem, as well as suggesting a one on one class and possible behaviorist. She also suggested other places in the area besides Petco, it just goes to show that she is loyal to her customers and their needs, instead of such a large corporation. She went above and beyond, supplied me with all of her contact info and said if I had questions do not hesitate to call her - at home, on her cell or at work! So these four stars are for the great customer service we received from Sarah! read more

My review is for Andy the groomer! My dog is a little rescue dog with some major fear issues. We've had a lot of trouble with him with other independent dog groomers, and we were treated badly elsewhere, plus our dog would come home cowering and fearful with nails cut into the quick :*( Andy, though, is so gentle. He takes time to really show your pet that he is safe and he allays my fears, too, which is important! I trust him completely. This Petco sucks. Prices are significantly higher here than the PetSmart on Elston. Large bag of dog food costs $9 more. Dog treats are $3 more. Here are some hard numbers for you. The regular price for Purina Pro Plan (PPP) dog treats are $7.99 here. They are $4.99 (regular price) at the PetSmart. That, my friends, is 60% more. WTF!!!! The PPP large breed dog food (large bag) is $8 more here. So if you feel like spending 20% - 60% more on your pooches' needs, feel free to come here and spend your money. read more

They have set up a play area for the dogs. I was kicked out because they told me they would be liable for my dog if she got hurt. There is nothing in the play area for her to harm her self. Close the area or put a sign up saying that unless a trainer is in this area is closed. The staff made me feel unwelcome. I won't go back here. read more

Had been going to Petco grooming now for 4 years, and everyone in the department was wonderful. Recent visit was the exception cut my dogs paw & did not tell me they did it. Just handed her back to me without a word. Was very disappointed, I am human and I make mistakes. Would have understood - she was cut on the pad and was unmistakably bleeding a lot from her PAD (not the nail itself) right next to her toe nail. I will take her to the vet next time & get it done, more costly but at least they care about their work. read more

Terrible experience at Petco. Again. Five regional and local managers in a discussion in the center of the store. One person at the register. Why do companies always have there in-store meetings during busy times with employees that are on-the-clock and supposed to be helping the store run properly? Finally a manager comes to help the cashier and takes the last person in line, not the next person. When it was my turn to be checked out, he closed again and went into the next room ( which has a huge window ) to talk on the phone. No sales associates to help on the floor. Prices are much higher than Pet Supplies Plus (which is one block away). I approached the manager to voice my complaint and he turned and walked away. I have pictures of him on the phone. I see no good reason to return to any petco location. read more

Petco is good for what it is. They have discounted prices on fish, but do not expect the quality to be as good as a dedicated aquarium store. They keep their fish in questionable environments at times as you sometimes see overcrowded tanks. I would definitely recommend this petco if you are an aquarium beginner as you are able to get all of the basic supplies at lower costs. In terms of the fish, I would recommend exploring other options such as old town aquarium where you will be able to buy healthier fish. read more

We love getting the best tips from trained professionals as well as the awesome attention they give my dog when she is there. Grooming is amazing as well. They really love doing what they do and take good care. In one review a woman talks about her dogs paw being cut, and she should read the fine print on the contract you sign over to them when you drop off. Whoever put a Petco across from Paws is a genius. We adopted a puppy from the Paws Angels with Tails event and headed up to Paws to get our food then hopped across the street to shower our new puppy with toys and essentials. We received a coupon book from Paws full of awesome coupons and Petco let us use as many as we wanted. The shop is very clean and the employees are friendly. The lady that checked us out scanned the bed that was in the cart holding puppy and even cut the tags and paper off this little cow toy so she could continue cuddling with it. They had tons of dog toys, leashes, treats, etc. and even carry some organic products. I love their Petco Pals Card too (...any store with a card I can put on a keychain makes me happy). As usual, I was procrastinating on life and didn't get a chance to book in advance (like a considerate human) for our dogs holiday grooming. We were able to book an appointment due to mere luck and cancellations right before the holidays on a weekend! I'm, to say the least, a bit of a helicopter mom and that that definitely goes for my dog and being overbearing; our groomer sadly moved to Texas and we have had a hard time finding anyone as good with our dog and his hair since. As soon as Zen greeted us all of my nerves were calmed. She was WONDERFUL with our new puppy!! He looked and smelled fabulous for the longest time after too. This is a review of their stock & policies. I've been going to this specific location for about 10 years & have always been happy with my experiences until this weekend. I purchased a bag of dog treats & when I opened them, they were filled with mold. I took it back to the store & they said I could exchange them out but when I took it to the register, they charged me more for the new bag. Apparently the day I purchased my original bag, they were on sale. But the day I brought them back, they were longer on sale. So they sold me a moldy bag, I went out of my way to bring it back, then they charged me more for a fresh bag. Should have been an even exchange, and if anything a reimbursement for an inconvenience, but I guess customer service for loyal customer's isn't a priority here. I'll shop chewy from now on. read more

My review will focus more on the products and shopping experience here. I have a mini Dachshund with short hair, so I don't go to the groomer here. I'm a big comparision shopper, so I have definitely done my homework on my pet supplies after having my pet for about two weeks. Thing here at this store are definitely not any cheaper than Target/Walmart, etc. However, Target/Walmart and other stores does not even come close to the selection for pets here. This is the only place I can find good training treats for my dog. This is the only place I can find the "good" brands of dog food for my dog. This is one of the only places I can find decent looking outfits for my dog that aren't outragously priced. For those of you on a budget for your pet (like me), check out the clearance section to the right of the front door. I found some cute dog clothes, dog shampoo, and some other accessories for so much cheaper than regular stuff. I also found two Snuggies for my dog in that area that were cheap! My dog loves coming here with me and we will be come back for most of our shopping needs in the future. read more
