I've gone to this Petco many times out of necessity because (I thought) it was the only one within a 5 mile radius of me. Turns out, there's a Petco Unleashed on Spring St in Long Beach that is so much better. I'll get back to that in a second- first I want to talk about my experience with this Petco yesterday. I was at Whole Foods Market next door, so I stopped in the Long Beach Petco next door to buy some dog food since I was already there and was quickly reminded why I don't shop there anymore. The line was long, only one person was at the register (not that surprising, considering it was a Thursday morning), so a young man named Ryan came over and begrudgingly told me he could help me on the next register. He didn't even greet me, just said, "Phone number?" when I walked up. I gave it to him, then asked before he rung up my bag of dog food if they still price matched their online prices. *Side note- I know for a FACT they do this for 2 reasons: 1. Petco Unleashed on Spring has happily obliged me on several occasions to do this. 2. A relative of mine is a Petco manager & is the one that told me they do this. Ryan said, "We do, but only for repeat deliveries. Since you didn't know that, I'll give it to you this one time." I was completely baffled. I said, "Oh really? That can't be. I've done it before several times." He replied, "Well...I don't know about that, but I'll do it just this ONE time." So then I said, "That's weird because my relative is a Petco manager and she's the one who told me that you guys price match." To which he replied, "No. But I'll do it once." He was very perturbed that I was asking him to do this and made me feel VERY uncomfortable about it, which is ridiculous because we're talking a couple of dollars here! It's not like I was asking him to discount me 50% for pete's sake! I know what he was referring to, also. If you've ever shopped on Petco.com, which I have many times, if you sign up for repeat delivery, you get a 20% discount. So, I got on my phone and double checked that the $15.99 online price ($19.99 in store) wasn't just for repeat delivery because hey, maybe I'm wrong. I put the bag of dog food in my cart and clicked "Check Out" and clicked "ONE TIME ONLY" to make double sure and sure enough, the bag price was still $15.99. So my point is, repeat delivery has NOTHING to do with the different price online and he was just being rude for no reason... which is why I can't stand the Long Beach store and will go back to shopping at Petco Unleashed on Spring ONLY. I won't even go back to Long Beach for convenience. read more

don't think i'll ever get used to some of the weird people working in long beach place was ok as far as Petco stores go, just stopped in because I was in the area I had a couple of petco reward vouchers that had to be used that day, so went to look for some dog treats. Was happy to find that this location had some of the chicken fetch ems at the treat bar.....my dogs seem to love these things, chicken flavored yogurt covered cookies! They said they were going to stop carrying soon....boo! I guess my dogs are a few of the only ones that like them? in any case, no biggie, filled up a nice sized bag of them, a bit steep at 5.99/lb, but oh well....not so bad when you figure I had 10 dollars in rewards to spend. total with reward bucks, a little less than 5 bucks! only knock off a star because of the tard working the register nice enough guy, but a bit on the annoying side....repeatedly said I could have saved paper by loading rewards to my card rather than printing? like I give a flying f@ck about saving paper buddy....it's only ONE SHEET, not gonna save a tree with it he kept muttering under his breath about how much a pain in the ass it was to have to manually enter the reward code, since it didn't scan properly....like that is supposed to be MY PROBLEM??? Again, kept repeating that it would have been better to save paper and load to my card......ENOUGH ALREADY! in any case, got what I needed, wasn't too big of an issue, just don't think I should be lectured by a tard on saving the environment....must be a Bernie/Clinton supporter huh? read more

They Have an awesome staff really friendly and really helpful!! The taught me all about foods for my dogs and the dog trainer there really knows dogs!! The First time I passed him He called out the breeds of my dog specifically and not just referring to them as pits. OK So i have an Alapaha Blue-Blood Bulldog and a Dogo Argentina who i brought purebred from a breeder. one is 7 months the other 4 months the day i got them I walked them into Petco and right off the bat they pull me down the isles sniffing everything and almost tearing me in two when Troy the dog trainer that they have walks up and asks me if i needed help and i said no when it was obvious I did .... He stood there for a second watching me struggle the offered to show me a trick he took the leash and began walking Deuce the larger but younger of my Puppies. it took honest to god less than 2 minutes for him to get deuce to walk with him loose leash and prancing!!! Then He did the same thing with Lowla. Funny part is as soon as he handed them back to me the began pulling!!!! Wondering how he did it i signed up for his Leash class on Tuesdays only 10$$ That hour changed the relationship with my dogs totally. I knew how to teach sit down and all that from you-tube but walking was the biggest challenge and Troy saved my hands !! About a month later Deuce my younger the dogo started showing signs of aggression with random dogs. I was coming to Petco to get a muzzle happened to see Troy he said Petco Trainers aren't allowed to address aggression issues in fact they aren't allowed to even train them in the store but he did offer me some tips while were talking Deuce spazzed out and started going after some ladies wiener dogs who by the way i heard barking aggressively on the way into the store. before i could correct him Troy did with a touch and said Hey! deuce sat and whimpered then went into a down down. Once again i was in awe explained to me calm energy and body language all this stuff i had never really payed attention to as the lady with the weenies listened in. He escorted me to the muzzle and told me to watch Deuce to see what sets him off. Walking down the middle isle a lady with a lab walks in and Deuce started watching its every move. Troy tapped me and said there As i looked the lab and Deuce had met gazes i saw hackles rise Troy corrected him before he let off a growl and deuce let the lab sniff !! He then walked me through a few "chance encounters". After I walked out the store muzzle-less i felt confident and relieved. I Love this Petco because Troy the dog trainer is awesome, seriously ask him how he's doing he says awesome! He even gave me his cell number which was a big mistake because i text him asking advise all the time. Definitely made owning my monsters allot more pleasant read more

If you are planning on coming to this PetCo's Grooming Salon make sure to ask for Jessica; she's been grooming both of my small breed dogs since they were puppies and she never fails to deliver the utmost perfection and her attention to detail is superb. I'm telling you, you won't go wrong with her! The store itself is a lot bigger than what I'm used to when visiting any PetCo store, but that's okay. Overall, come on in and give it a try! read more

The employees are pretty cool. Most of the time a short line warrants opening a second register, which rocks. Nobody wants to sit in line while the lady for 60 cans of cat food and tons of treats and toys checks out! Though I only come here for cat food, it is nice to buy 20 cans of Fancy Feast, in flavors I KNOW my cats will eat, for $11. Totally worth my time and money. The litter is significantly overpriced. Feline Pine is $8.59 at Target (though they are consistently out of stock) and for the same bag $15.00 at PetCo. This is definitely the place to come for specific items, but certainly NOT for all of your pet needs... unless you're independently wealthy! Also, even if you don't want one, they have the cutest bunny by the front door. Every time it's a different bunny. Oh so cuddly! read more

I waited a couple of days to write this because i thought maybe i would get over it. But i'm still super upset. I usually take my dog to get groomed at pussy and pooch and used to have her groomed at petco when i used to live in huntington beach on warner st. So i said what the heck and took her to the one closes to my house here in long beach. My husband picked up Tamali after being groomed and they gave us the groom free because they had cut my dogs leg. No big deal yeah i understand that mistakes happen. When she got home i saw they had cut a chunk of my dogs upper leg off, the skin was dangling there!! it was bleeding and gross. Mind you she's a 2.5 lb yorkie so you can imagine how much bigger that cut was then any other big dog. Not to mention it was her 2nd bday so we were going to take her to dog park, but couldn't for fear of infection....such an awesome bday!! read more

I would like to acknowledge Ricky & Ray for their excellent commitment to customer service. My husband and I walked in looking for dog houses for our fur babies and both staff were very knowledgeable of their products and what they had to offer. Both of them worked together as a team and was nice enough to bring down the heavy houses from the shelves to the counter and then all the way to the car. Talk about bad attitude. If you don't want to offer Pals Rewards than make a big note so that customers can see. I had a very passive-aggressive interaction with cashier, Kimberly, who didn't allow me to input my telephone number and when I asked about Pals Rewards she got huffy and said, "I have to return it, then..." and she did as she himmed, hawed, sighed and rolled her eyes. Grow up! You should have let me input my number or realized I only got my area code in. There is no need for a nasty "have a good day." Don't get mad at me because you were impatient and rushing. I like the actual facility and the staff here is nice. I find that it's a lot cleaner than the Petco at Lakewood (the dog treat center at the Lakewood location had flies swarming all over it!), but this review is specifically for the dog training services (Dog Obedience I). In one line: Save your money. Go to Buena Park PETSMART instead (and sign up with Natasha! She's amazing, but that's a different review). The only dog trainer this location has is Troy. Now Troy is a nice guy. He seems to genuinely like the dogs he works with, and he does try to be accommodating. However, he's not very organized and that makes the classes not as effective as they could be. He has a seven-month old Cocker Spaniel that he brings to class as a training tool, but this dog is not ideal as such. I found that we spent more time watching Troy trying to get Minion (his dog) to demonstrate the trick or the obedience training (note, emphasis on "try") rather than actually practicing the trick ourselves. Perhaps when Minion is better trained, he'd make for a better role model. I was also dissatisfied with the actual class schedule. Troy promised that the first class would be a free orientation, and at first I thought that was really great of him. He demonstrated some of the things we'd be learning using our own dogs (he didn't have Minion with him that day). Our six-week session also included Easter, and he distinctly said that we would not be having class because of the holiday. This led to quite a bit of confusion because later he claimed he had never canceled class (which meant that our dogs' "tests" and "graduation" would be ON the fourth class, not the sixth). So. I talked to Troy about this, but he still kept saying that he had never canceled, but that he would do a makeup session with my dog (however, he added that he had already taught us everything, thus implying that a makeup was pointless). I ended up not taking him up on his offer as he postponed the test one week (and I only found this out because I contacted him again. Otherwise, I would have still thought that the test was on the fourth class, and I wouldn't have gone because I didn't want a picture of me and my dog as endorsement of his services). I was a bit annoyed at level of communication throughout, and it was no different for the test. Troy had told us to practice certain obedience training skills (such as the unspoken sit and having the dog sit/down from a distance) but on the actual test he didn't test any of those. Instead, he included a stand/stay, which we had never practiced (yeah, my dog didn't do too well on that one, but Troy passed him anyway because he did decently on the other tasks). The space allotted for the training itself is too small and half the time Petco uses it as storage space, thus limiting it even more. I really wish Petco had the 100% satisfaction guarantee that Petsmart had because I would have definitely asked for another class (or maybe not. I was frustrated at the lack of communication and lack of organization with Troy, even though I liked him well enough as a person). Anyway, I found Natasha at Petsmart and I'm so thrilled. Troy had told me at the end of our six-week session I needed to figure out what set my dog off (he's a bit aggressive with other dogs, perhaps from having been neglected for two years by his previous owners (he's a rescued dog)), but Natasha was able to tell me on the first day that my dog has a staring problem and that he takes it as a challenge when other dogs stare back (hence the aggression). Honestly, I love her. Go to Petsmart. You won't regret it (even though it's a bit farther, she's so worth it!) read more

Needed to buy some fish food and decided to buy a few new friends for the tank while we were there. This place has the worst service. Everytime we have come, it takes them 15 minutes to help us and it is not even busy. The employees seem like they are clueless about fish. My boyfriend always had to remind them how to put the fish correctly in the plastic bag. Highly annoying. We only come here because we are always in the area and that causes us to remember that we need some things, so it is convenient in that way I guess. Uhhh. Took my Maltese to get groomed for first time today at this location. My pet is 7 years old and I have never had to tell a groomer to NOT trim her tail. She had a beautiful floor length tail that made her different than what you see on many other like her. When I arrived her tail wS chopped off like a ragged ugly pompom!!. It will take years to grow back. Who does that!!! They didn't even ask. They refunded me but it's just horrible . Just sick about it. read more

This is my PETCO and I'm here more often than I care to admit. The staff is actually pretty friendly and helpful and they're always very nice to Oliver, my terrier. Except for the older gentlemen usually at the register, he looks like Colonel Sanders but don't let the white hair fool you. He is in no mood to make you fried chicken OR be friendly and he may even shoot a snide remark your way. Everyone else is lovely though! I think the items are fairly priced for a chain pet store and they carry the Wellness brand I feed Sir Oliver. The store is well stocked and they sometimes have really good products on sale or clearance. Plus it's nearby and I've never had trouble parking here. I've gotta say I'm pretty surprised at all the bad reviews for it. But most of those are fairly old. So go! Shop in peace friends, maybe Oliver will even come over and say hello :) read more

Good selection of products, especially Halloween costumes. This particular Petco has more products than my local one so that's a huge plus. However, the products are way overpriced. I get that they are licensed but $30 for an UCLA jersey for my toy Yorkie is ridiculous. Also the biggest reason for only three stars: they have some creepy workers. This one guy followed my mom and I around and watched us like hawks. I don't know if it was because we were trying the clothes on our pup but at our local Petco they tell us it's okay. He never said anything, he just kept walking near us and watching us. It made both of us feel very uncomfortable. read more

It isn't really fair to give Petco only two stars because of their pet grooming part of their business, but hey, Yelp (and if you ask my mom, "Life") isn't fair. I have stopped taking my two dogs there because of a string of bad experiences. I would say that regularly, I would be given an estimated time they would be done, said time would com and go without a phone call. I would call them an hour or so later and they would inevitably tell me "Oh, yeah!, They have been done for a while. Didn't someone call you?" As if I am just sitting at home giggling away for my genius idea to screw with the dog groomers at Petco. NO, NOBODY CALLED ME!!! The last two times I picked my dogs up from there, it was like they were trying to get out of a creep old lady's house after a bad day of babysitting. They practically charged out of there to get away. On top of that, when we got home, they drank water like it was the best thing since licking themselves. (Based on how often they do that, I only imagine how much they like it.) I can't say for certain that Petco is not giving them water or mistreating them, but the new place that we are taking the dogs to is great and the dogs seem very happy when they leave there. Not a giant fan, but it is cheap...so, they have that going for them...which is nice. read more

Went in to the Petco in Signal Hill today to get two pet rats for our daughter (ok, and for me). Asked a female salesperson for help and she promptly sent over Jay, who is an experienced rat owner. He helped us pick out an enclosure, food, bedding, etc. and answered a million questions for us. Very nice guy and very knowledgeable. The Signal Hill store only stocks male rats so he called this store in LB (on PCH) to make sure they had females before we drove there. When we got to the LB store, we were shocked at how dirty (with poop) their rat enclosures were. Really gross and sad to see them running on a wheel caked with feces and eating from food dishes smeared in poo. So, if you're in the market for rats, go see Jay in Signal Hill. read more

Had a weekend of great experiences at this Petco. My puppy was able to enjoy puppy play time on both Saturday and Sunday. There were quite a lot of dogs but the staff handled it very well making sure all puppies were given the opportunity to play and experience multiple playmates during the 30 minute session. After playtime we went to the grooming center to ask about making an appointment for her to have her nails trimmed and filed. They were of course busy seeing that many people come in before the holiday but they kindly took her right away. They are good about verifying vaccinations and did a little temperament test with us there to gauge her reaction to being handled. Her nails look great and the cost for both the trim and filing was only 15 dollars when we pay more at the vet for just a trim. We also were looking for a specific type of leader to help with how much she wants to pull and very quickly an associate came and helped us find it and the selection was better than I expected even though I would have like more color options. All in all a weekend of great experiences. read more

This place always seems run down inside, and the staff always seem like they hate their job. I tried the groomers here a couple times and have not been happy. I took my dogs in for a bath once, and when they were done they smelled better, but were visibly still very dirty. Another time I took my dog in for a bath and a cut, and it was the same thing. My dog was still dirty, and the cut was uneven, AND they did not groom his nails like I paid for. The only good thing about their grooming side is if you need to get your dog in in a hurry, they usually have openings... I wonder why. read more

I have a new adopted dog and have been to this Petco to buy food, toys, collars, ID pet tags. The sales reps/cashiers are helpful when I had questions about food ingredients (I found a ProPlan dry food with shredded chicken for our senior dog---she's a finicky eater and loves it!) I also have had our dog groomed with Ryan. He was very knowledgeable and professional and did a great job with a bath and haircut! I was shopping for a harness and one of the other groomers assisted in finding us the right fit and its very comfy! Yep! They are doing a great job at this Petco! read more

My golden retriever now looks like some stupid foofy thing from the movie best in show. Any professional groomer would never do what they did to our dog, taking the breed into consideration. Absolutely the worst haircut I have ever seen on a golden, she now looks like a short hair lab with a poodle tail. Ridiculous! Would not recommend these groomers. I just had the best experience possible. I have been trying to begin an aquarium project for my granddaughter and going to the big aquarium store didn't really help me much. As nice as they are it can be kinda snobbish of an experience. I went to this petco to Pick up some add-ons for my tank and decided to ask the staff some questions. Let me say that I don't usually think the staff at the chain stores get as much training in things as I would like but at this store I would be wrong. Robin the manager is awesome and so knowledgeable about fish. She really helped me out and I think my tank will be super once its done. Hayden at the counter was also super friendly and helpful as well. The whole experience made my night and my granddaughter had fun talking to them both. In all I think I have found my new go to place for my pet needs. Thank you to robin and all the staff for a truly helpful and friendly experience. This store stinks. Literally. It stinks and it also has a staff that can seriously kiss my little asian ass. I'm walking around aimlessly (and in utter confusion) and I can't find a single person to help me out! They had 4-5 aisles dedicated to dogs and I'm thinking "What the H*LL are these people getting paid to do?!" Finally, to my disappointment, I find two WHOLE aisles dedicated to cats resting against the fish department (great choice of placement.) I realize that they have nothing, except a toy or two, and make my purchase. The person at the register barely mutters a hello and everyone looks like they're doing absolutely nothing. Sometimes, they're just standing there by themselves and doing nothing, which is really awkward to watch mind you. About the products, this place is overpriced and most of the "on-sale" stuff are extremely bad for your animals. If you think you're getting a deal, then you need to take a look at what they're actually cutting the prices down. The items either are going to break pretty easily or they're going to make your pet get fat and nasty. If you think places like Centinela is expensive, then you need to rethink Petco's prices. For basic items such as bowls or toys the place isn't bad, but I still wouldn't recommend going here. It's not worth driving down PCH and beating all the traffic to be disappointed. It's always nice to look at the fishies until you see a giant goldfish floating around..you know..the pretty DEAD kind and there's no one attending the area for me to tell them. read more
