DO NOT HIRE!! We contracted Petersen Plumbing to replace our sewer lateral. During my discussion with Taylor the owner, he said someone would have to come out and give an estimate. He said he wanted the job and could get it done fast as he was "hungry" for work. This should have been a sign. We had another super high estimate from another plumbing co and was hesitant to tell him what the cost was. For some reason he wanted to agree on cost on the phone and said he would do it for $1500 and that his hourly rate was $168 hr. I told him that was the maximum we could spend but that we should discuss onsite to get a clearer estimate of time. He sent his guy Juan over, and he wrote out on the estimate $1500. I told him that was not the cost and that we had discussed a "DO NOT EXCEED" price. Needless to say the job was completed while we were traveling, so I emailed Taylor to ask him if the job was finished and for final bill/ hours of service. He said he would get back to me, and never did. He then billed me for the $1500 and our contractor foreman onsite said that Juan was there a maximum of 3 hrs. I tried emailing and calling and he did not reply. He then sent something about a month later saying he was on medical leave and he'd have to get back to me upon return. He said " My tech gave you a bid price for work that you signed and approved per signature and we completed. I do understand you as I'm on medical leave and would be happy to figure out a solution when I return." I'm pretty sure he's been back at work for a while now as that was 4 months ago. I've tried emailing and calling for months and he will not return. The service was back in August. Stay away at all costs! They are frauds. read more

We had a number of plumbing issues at our house in Mill Valley including a slow drain, a leaky toilet and a gas valve that needed replacing for our BBQ. Unbelievable pricing?! We were quoted just under $500 to fix the filler valve in our toilet. Luckily my husband was home who knew this was an insane quote and told the plumber. Although he offered to lower the price by $100, we still knew $400 was so outrageous, worth it to take the time and fix it ourselves or call a more reasonable company. The next day, my husband bought the broken part for $8 at our local (high end) hardware store, and fixed it in 5 minutes. Hmmm... don't think I will call Petersen again. It makes me worry for the people who don't know better and just pay these outrageous fees. read more

I recently contacted Peterson Plumbing Services because my kitchen food disposal wasn't working. I had never been a customer before. But the owner called me back within an hour and had one of his staff get in touch to plan a same day appointment. When his plumber called me to set up that appointment, he was able to guide me to a solution myself (a simple reset, which I had not known how to do.). All other plumbing services that I called stated that they would charge a fee just to show up. In this case, there was no charge and these folks just earned my business for the future. I was looking for a good plumbing service and I believe I have found it. We had tried to unclog our bathroom sink drain and when we took it apart, the really really old pipe broke in fragments because it was so corroded. We were able to get an appointment the same day as we called and they sent Juan out. He is really nice and comfortable to talk to. He knows his stuff and fixed every thing in a jiffy. Our small job, everything was kept clean in the area of service. Juan even had the booties on! Here is the low down of what their service is like: There is a one hour minimum which starts from their office in Mill Valley behind the Arco station. I'm guessing if they are coming from a near by job they start the hour from there (I'm not sure what happens if there is a bunch of rush hour traffic happening). Our hour started about 25 mins before they got here. After the first hour, you are charged by 30 min increments. They charge for all parts used (of course). read more

Yesterday, we discovered that we had a pinhole leak in the copper pipe of our upstairs shower drain. Today, I did a search on Yelp and found Petersen Plumbing. Though it was a really busy day for them, Tyler Petersen, owner was nice enough to free up someone to come over to see if they could do the repair today. Brian, took a look a my problem, and was able to fix it. He did the repair quickly, and I would recommend and use them again. The base rate is $148 per hour, and after that, they charge in 30 minute increments. Though the work was done efficiently, I was a bit surprised that Brian did not have the necessary parts on his truck to do the type of repair I described in my initial phone call. So, he had to return to the shop a couple of times to pick up the parts he needed. Fortunately, the shop was close by. Unfortunately, I was charged for his travel time back and forth. I figure that added an additional 30 minutes to 1 hour ($74 to $148) to my bill. As I said, overall I'm happy. I appreciate that they were able to fix my problem the same day. One last thing. I was told if I were to have used my credit card to pay the bill, I would have been charged an extra 5% (because that's what the credit card company charged them). Brian told me they accepted cash or check. The owner should look into using Square as they only charge 2.75% to process a credit card. read more

Final update: We were dismayed to discover that Petersen Plumbing, despite their verbal promise over the phone that they would not cash our $79 consultation check, did so anyway after waiting about a month. I guess they assumed we wouldn't notice? We've learned the hard way what Petersen's word is worth. We have written Petersen Plumbing off, and have revised our Yelp rating of this company back down to the original, single star rating. I can only hope that others out there who read these reviews are forewarned, and can avoid being cheated by this disreputable company. read more

I called Petersen Plumbing during a lunch break in mid-week. I had to leave a message and requested a residential plumber for one of the next two days (I assumed there'd be NO WAY I could get same day service with half the day gone). They called back within a half hour,explained their services and prices to me and offered to have their plumber, Adam on my premises before the end of the day(!) He arrived as expected. Took his shoes off. Diagnosed my toilet troubles clearly and quickly. Then he went to work. About 26 minutes later my toilet was fixed, and I was writing a check. Done! I wish their hour minimum was more in line with the going Marin rate (Petersen charges $189.00 first hr min) but for this kind of worry-free service, I gotta say -- I'm glad I called them Petersen, you just found a new (ongoing) customer! Happy with the quality of service, attention to detail, and the affability of the service technician; however, found the pricing structure excessive: e.g., $149 for a trip charge to visit a neighboring town 15 minutes away and $289 for a brief diagnostic on a bathroom sink. A recent visit that involved exclusively routine servicing (no emergency or repair work) ended up costing us nearly $400/hour. When I raised my concerns with the owner of the company, I was informed that they need to make a living and that they are sticking to their business model. This was the only plumbing service that responded immediately to me right after the recent big storm on Sunday. I came home Monday night from work late to find all my toilets and tubs overflowing. I called over 10 plumbing services, with no success. The owner of Petersen Plumbing actually called me back within minutes, and worked around my schedule. The owner himself came out along with his assistant early Tuesday morning and quickly took care of the issue. As well as fixing another plumbing issue I had. The issue was an aging and leaky hot water heater, hemmed into a corner of a utility closet by a new furnace. Taylor proposed a creative option; to leave the old heater where it was, and install an instantaneous electric unit on the outside of my house. Taylor Petersen did this work himself. I needed parts for an older shower...parts NOT conventionally stocked "in the van." If you are interested in paying about 1 and a half times more for plumbing than other plumbing services and dealing with an owner who is not willing to work with you to agree on a fair price for services, then this is the plumber for you. They charge $250 for "detective work" which, in my case didn't lead to a solution, then charge 5% credit card fee (I suppose that's fair since it's 1950 and credit cards are so new and risky). Do yourself a favor and call a different plumber who is willing to do a good job at a fair price. I've had good experiences with S. Waters Plumbing. read more

Easy to schedule. Showed up on time. Did the job perfectly. Better rates then most. Fair billing. Excellent customer service! Finally, an honest plumber!! The plumber (Taylor) even showed up in booties to make sure he did not dirty our floors. He cleaned up after he finished the job too. And after a job well done, he gave me a 1 year parts and labor warranty on his work. Even a little drip and he will come out and make it right. Not all companies do this and it is nice to have that peace of mind. Petersen has an easy to use website that made it easy for me to get my issue registered with them, off -hours. I got a prompt call the next day and my appointment was scheduled very quickly during that call. The onsite work was well done. I want to update my review for Peterson based on service they completed today. No one wants their water supply line to burst, but that's what happened to us last week. It flooded our neighbor's basement and was a total disaster that needed to be repaired immediately or sooner. Taylor came out right away, advised me on what needed to be done and gave me a 'not to exceed' price, although the work would be billed based on time and materials. He helpfully suggested we hire our own people to dig the 200' trench for the new water line as a way of saving a significant amount of money versus having his own guys do the work. We followed his advice so the trench was ready when John came out to install the new 3/4" copper line this morning. In the meantime, very helpfully, Taylor had John install a temporary water line for us using a hose so that we could shut off the water that was leaking into our neighbor's house. In sum, the work came in significantly under Taylor's estimate, and John did a thorough and neat job. Everything looks great, we have fantastic water pressure now, and the work could not have been done faster. It is these kinds of circumstances where you really learn about the quality of your plumber, and I can't think of a way in which Peterson could have done better. read more

I met Taylor Peterson when I bought my first house 3 years ago. He and his troops did a great job fixing a few sinks that the people who flipped the house did a low quality job installing. This week my company is hosting an international sand sculpting competition. I called the Peterson team and his wife Sasha and entire crew showed up to make and create an entire water system in a parking lot so that 9 sculptors could water their 12 ton sand sculptures. I called Peterson last minute to let them know about the project and the complexity of it. It was a creative project that needed someone who understood and cared about the end results.
