I really really wanted to like this shop because we've been looking for an alternative to the Ford dealer. We set up an appointment at Pete's and dropped off our Ford F 250 truck for a safety check (we tow horses with it) and routine maintenance. My husband carefully explained what we wanted done before we dropped it off and again to the receptionist the morning we dropped it. The receptionist told us she'd call us that day. Not only did she not call us, but when we called her the next day they hadn't even started the work. The next day after that (Day 3) my husband called again to check on the status and they say "oh, yeah, it's ready." But when he inquired about what work was done, he was told that because we hadn't put on much mileage since the last time the truck was worked on, they didn't need to do much to it. My husband reminded them we wanted it checked out carefully - and at minimum the oil changed - because we use it to haul horses, it's a 2001 model and we can't have it break down while hauling. They eventually agreed to do an oil change and check the fluids. The bill was over $400. I get that labor prices have gone up, but their communication was terrible and it feels like we got charged quite a bit for a small job. I went in to have my wheel bearings check out. I was told it was an electrical problem on my 2007 Prius. They insisted the screeching and humming noise was a failing electrical problem with the generator. They charged me about 130 bucks for the diagnostic. I took it to Freeman Toyota and they replaced the wheel bearings and the screeching and humming noise disappeared. .... I drove the Prius 2200 miles to Wisconsin with zero issues. Beware of these guys ... They can't diagnose wheel bearings on a simple car They should really refund my money. read more

I brought my car into Pete's two weeks ago to get an oil leak checked out. They charged me $150 and told me they didn't find any leak and my oil is fine. Two weeks later the oil light (as well as several others) came on in my car. I called Pete's and asked them to look at my car again free of charge, since I'd already paid them to identify the issue and they hadn't been able to. They said I'd have to pay the same amount for them to look again. Given that they weren't able to identify the issue the first time, I'm not interested in paying another $150 for them to maybe find the issue and will be visiting another mechanic: read more

On further review found out battery drain was from aftermarket stereo that a previous owner had installed in car. Why Jason didn't detect this, I don't know. But not as bad of an outcome as I had thought. Other than that the car runs well. read more

Youll feel like you came in asking for a big free favor, get a fake smile you wont expect most likely and overlook optimitcally. seen it while i was there.. they 100 percent will get every dime theyre allowed to take from you with a smirk on their face. There are now mostly people in this world who take the fact that you NEED something they can do as a form of power and abuse it and get off on it and use it to feel more superior than you and especially in this county. the miserables do it and then their also the status lovers. But these guys have miserable written all over their faces. i think they take it out on their customers. these people dont deserve a smile or customer or anything real and genuine in life period imo. its too bad what they do isnt written on their shirts for everywhere they go. fake smiles and fasads is all theyll ever be with the mind set they let themselves fall into. i paid 1800 plus 100 for my part that i drove to get for the recomendation i had to make myself to ensure the best chance of not still having a leak , financial set back. idk if they didnt reccomend it because they dont know or if its strategical, so they would have to pull my trans down again for another 1800 bucs plus parts. either way.. dumb..then a bunch of oh its not easy oh the exhaust is in the way were gona have to charge more ,and then it actully wasnt in the way at all (i checked while it was on the lift and they never moved it for sure), and oh that gasket wont leak and guess what the actual majority of the leak was, verified by their own employee.. the gasket jason got mad about me wanting to pay to be replaced because it wasnt in his plans or because he didnt want to feel wrong about his plan.. i dont have any family (that arent homeless or on drugs), no inherttience, nobody to run to or borrow from and you guys want to take as much as you can from me. its just pretty crazy anyone sleeps well at night with bad intentions every day.. not saying poor me at all, its just reality and from my shoes its hard not to want to put out there for perspective. youre behind the counter feeling accomplished and slick about taking as much as you can from people who are on their own and in your hands.. idk..why its cool and funny to even do it at all as an adult..oh well, guess 400 bucs is worth having a reputation like this and also not more of my business. dumb. oh and btw i tightened my oil filter, and one pan bolt was loose. probably the one you started with, you should always double back and make sure theyre all torqued to spec after you get them all the first pass. the first few or couple tend to free up once the rest is tight. oil filter went another 90 plus degrees by hand. read more

To get advice and to see if it was safe to drive to Tomales and back to have it fixed. He did his check, it was nothing important that he could find, said he turned the light off, could mean I had various minor thugs ( light bulbs, etc), if the light comes back on, make an Appt and he'd fix it. My dealership wanted to charge me $1400 for a 60k service. I took my car to Pete's and paid $156. What???? Jason explained to me that most of that service was just checking things, not too many things needed to be replaced. Jason showed me all the stuff that was done to my car and also discussed my next big service which will be 100k miles. They gave me a ride home while the service was being performed and picked me up too. Super friendly and honest people. From now on all my services will be done there, including my oil changes. I took my 2008 Toyota to Pete's for service last week. It needed a general inspection as it is pretty old, and I just wanted to see if any service was necessary. They said my little care was in excellent condition. All I needed were two license plate lights replaced, which they even gave me a discount on. Maybe because I'm a senior. They were so friendly, and I feel very happy that Peet's was recommended to me. They have a customer for the life of my car! I can't recommend them highly enough. read more

Well, my 4 cylinder 89 Ford Ranger's timing belt broke on my way to work just a few miles from Sebastopol. I found Pete's Automotive online and had my truck towed there. I was shocked when I got their repair estimate. They wanted 4.3 hours of labor totaling $520 and $220 for parts to repair it. I am a professional mechanic myself. I work on farm and earth moving machinery and have done so for most of my life. This Ford Ranger is pretty much the easiest timing belt change of all vehicles. I could not fathom the concept of a well equipped professional auto mechanic spending over half a day on the job. This is made even more significant by the fact that they charge 20% more for their labor hours than most small non-dealer shops in the area. I have my own tools. I have another truck and my neighbor has a car trailer. I went down there, loaded it up, stopped by O'Reilly's for the parts and drove home. I had all my tools still packaged in their moving totes, I had to fabricate an extractor to remove the crankshaft pulley (Pete's would have several of those) and I am not an auto mechanic. I was test driving my truck after only 3.5 hours. I spent $120 at O'Reilly's for their best parts and new antifreeze. I had paid for towing to their shop, they figured I knew little if anything about auto mechanics. They figured they could get away with it. They would have if I had not had a full size truck, access to a trailer, tools and knowledge. Shop around before you accept the "Old fashioned honesty" slogan for truth. I'd like to add that before I decided to do it myself I got a quote from a very good shop in Santa Rosa for 3.5 hours labor ($350). read more

I have had extensive work performed on several vehicles by Pete's Automotive and I couldn't be more pleased. The technical work is spot on and their customer service is the best. Jason, Emily and the rest of the crew make you feel welcome and well cared for. They take the time to go over repairs thoroughly with you both before and after, and provide options as to what you want to have done- there are no hard sell or scare tactics. I own older vehicles, and I was skeptical at first that a "young" guy like Jason would know anything about a vehicle that didn't have a computer in it. I was wrong- he is a skilled technician and diagnostic ace- not just a "parts changer". I think that it is a somewhat sad comment on the world we live in that one has to celebrate finding business people who are sincere, competent and most of all, honest. Took my F-150 in to have some work done.. (plugs, O2 sensor, electrical) they were great about the service. Most people want $8-900 to change the plugs in an F-150 because of a manufacture flaw that has the plugs break off in the cylinder, Jason's charge is half of that... Once more it turns out after an assessment I won't need plugs for another 20k so Jason suggested I hold off... he did fix my electrical issues and found some linkage issues I knew about and fixed those as well. I will update in a few weeks to report how the quality of the work is holding out.. so far so good. read more

I have been keeping my ears open for a reputable auto repair for quite some time without success. All I have heard is complaints so I took to the net and started reading reviews of repair shops in my area. I'm so glad I trusted the reviews on Pete's as they were not exaggerated. I scheduled an appointment for a diagnostic already sure that my power steering pump was going out. As it turned out I just needed a new battery. A lot of shops would have just gone ahead and replaced the pump and charged me accordingly. Thank you for being honest Pete's. While driving down Highway One from Gualala, my brakes went out! This in a 4 wheel drive diesel pickup. Had they failed on Myers Grade I would have been crab bait on the beach! Luckily I was able to limp into Sebastopol on my emergency brake and engine braking. After stopping at Benedetti's Tire and Wheel, they could not do the job but called Pete's. They said they could do the job. I made it to their shop and Jason, the owner inspected my truck. He found that in fact the right front brake hose had ruptured. He quickly scheduled my emergency repair and after replacing the brake hose, I was on my way again. Jason and his crew saved my life. I can not say enough of their willingness to take time to do an impromptu emergency repair despite being very busy. All this with a friendly smile and courteous service. read more

I was having trouble starting my car & thought soon I wouldn't be able to start it at all so I just headed straight over to Pete's Automotive. It happened that it was late Fri early evening & they had actually closed but the gate was still open & Jason was working late. Jason & Emily are so sweet! He figured out it was my battery & called his supply business he uses which was also closed but they offered to open up for them. Then Emily drove over to get it & Jason put it in for me right then. we needed our rv batteries checked and disconnected.. we found pete's on google maps as we were out of the area where we live and know auto shops.. right away, on the phone, they were upbeat, helpful, and willing to schedule us when we got there, about 4pm.. they took care of us immediately, checking other parts that we hadn't even asked them to check, cleaned the corosion off our car battery, and in 30 minutes, sent us happily on our way.. and the charge was quite reasonable. pete's wife, and two dogs, and jodi (?) were friendly and made the experience even more pleasant.. highly recommend!! read more
