After getting zilch at Meat Monsters for brisket. We went down the street to this place. Busy good little Liqour and other stuff store. BBQ in the back. Got a pound to go. Looking at it at home wish I'd looked while at the store. Guess I'm used to long meaty strips with meat and the fat. Got these chunks of brisket instead. My BF and I were in town visiting and were craving BBQ, so we googled bbq places near us and this place popped up. It was 8:20pm and it said they closed at 9. We called and asked if they are still accepting orders, and they said yes. (I wish they had said no). We order a combo with ribs, whole chicken and brisket, comes with 3 salads and 4 dinner rolls. I had the brisket. It was very good. I was hoping the portion would be bigger so I could have taken some home for another meal. However, the sides are awful. The Mac and Cheese tasted like plastic. Even Velveeta would have been an improvement. The onion rings were those fake minced and formed rings. The coleslaw was ok. If I ever go again I'm just getting a pile of meat. read more

The pictures on the side of the building looked great, so I brought the hungry family in for a BBQ stop. We had a Combo #2 with Ribs, whole Chicken, tri-tip, rolls, and three sides ($29.99), and a Brisket Burrito. I know, right? Brisket Burrito just seems like a San Diego thing that has to be good, and it was! Good chunks of brisket in a generous burrito tortilla with a good compliment of fillings. The BBQ combo plate was a total disappointment, though. Cold. Not warm, cold. The middle ribs were cooler than room temperature. Chicken? Cold. How do you let a WHOLE chicken go cold before serving? There's something not-right about the food handling here. If the ribs were hot, they might have been good -- decent smoke and flavor, but nobody wants a cold rib. The chicken was more like oven-roasted, not so much BBQ. No crisp. I'm hoping both of these benefit from a re-heat tomorrow, but that wasn't really the idea in stopping here. The tri-tip was a disaster.. oversalted, burned char chunks in places, and just a weird barn taste, like the wood was still green or something. Didn't taste right, artificial or off somehow. It was carved more like 'chips' than slices. Avoid! As for ambiance, hey, it's a BBQ inside a liquor store. Good things can happen this way, but know that your view will be of the Budweiser fridge or the large noisy fan. The forks and knives are the thinnest, smallest plasticware.. trying to eat beans with these little cappuccino spoons was its own kind of weird. All in all, could have been a good value, but the cold meat temps raise too many questions. read more

I would love to give a 4, but I paid over the phone once as requested to place my order and the person tipped themselves. I have not seen the young guy again, but then again I haven't been back to eat just the liquor store. I remedied the situation by buying me an offset smoker and practicing until I got my smoking game in order. We have a place to get white oak and other good smoking woods in town. They are fortunate I still gave a three star review after my experience here. The cooks in the kitchen look sketchy at times to. I am picky about who makes my food, personal presentation means a lot when one consumes food. I know every now and then the chef looks like the guy in South Park and I always give a chance. Overall a very good experience! I was pleasantly surprised by the gyros sandwich - the lamb was moist and seasoned nicely, the bread was fluffy, and the Tzatziki sauce was surprisingly good. The brisket was also very tasty and the meat was tender. I was surprised to find it comparable to those I've had at Greek restaurants! The chicken salad was good, fresh produce, but the chicken was just diced into little pieces. As far as side dishes, I liked the baked beans the best. French fries were pretty good -- the mac and cheese was a bit soupy for my taste. The employees were very nice, hardworking, and got everything right. I can't say enough about this place. I live in San Diego but will definitely come to Ramona just to go to Pete's. The food was amazing! It's safe to say that this is the best BBQ I've ever had. I got a pulled pork sandwich with extra bbq sauce, first let me say this Sandwich is all meat no fat! Good job! Thank you, I hate when you take that first bite and it's just a bunch of fat with little meat, it's Very unpleasant and not what you want from a pulled pork sandwich. New resident of Ramona and I've hit this place about three times. Normally I would say it's about average but the tri tip I bought this weekend was an abomination. The meat was shaved thin and had almost a lighter fluid taste to it. I know these guys work hard in this place so I hope this review is taken seriously and management takes this as constructive criticism. For real authentic bbq you guys gotta put some more effort in here. read more

Revisited 5/8/2017 It has been a while since I first visited Pete's. Sadly no more of the delicious street tacos they once served. It is totally different then the little taco shop it began as. It is now full on BBQ. With a very large menu and have everything from brisket to pulled pork to BBQ chicken and ribs. They also have a number of BBQ sandwiches and burgers. Service was good and friendly. There is plenty of seating inside which was a surprise. Prices are normal for BBQ. I ordered The #1 Combo Plate which consisted of try tip, BBQ chicken, and smoke pork ribs. It was a good size order and in some cases could feed two. The barbecue sauce was quite mild but if you ask they will give you a side of their spicy sauce. It's not all that overly spicy but I found it just right and very tasty. For Ramona this is a hidden gem. I will be back to try the burgers I give this place a solid 3 1/2 Stars Enjoy read more

I Love BBQ ! So with that said I feel obligated to share with the Yelp community how bad the BBQ is here. Before I give my feedback I just like to say I been BBQing for about 30 yrs backyard pit master for friends and family, also done some catering as requested by friends. The pulled pork was horrible (sorry Pete) over powering liquid smoke ! The Mac n Cheese somewhat homemade but very bland. Just by glancing at the meats I can immediately notice it was cooked the day before or maybe longer ? It was hot inside and with that said old meat and heat just don't mix .. Customer service and employees were very friendly which makes it hard to say anything bad about the BBQ but I must defend the BBQ goers enthusiast who love too try new places, I can confidently say you will not miss anything skipping this place. So there is no ambiance here as it is tucked in back of a liquor mart, but I must say this is fabulous bbq and food!! From the tri-tip salad to the Ramona Burger, from the fries to the Philly cheesesteak it is all but flavor wow in the mouth. There are never chunks of grissell substitute for meat, it's all meat and quality food! It is my main bbq go to 100%, just wish it had more ambiance and that sometimes orders didn't take as long. This place was terrible! I can not see why this place exsists. The burgers were rock like when ordered rare, and if you like a whole salt shaker full of burger this place is for you. Its like they said "nah dawg we gotta add 2 salt shakers worth" but then the head chief said "no bro Costco size salt at a bare minimum for those rocks" The fries were store bought and the mac and cheese had to be from 2 days ago. (Good low carbonation malty apple cider flavor had apple sweet taste - strong for this light weight) Fries - crispy, seasoned well. Good salt. Tri tip sandwich - bun nothing special toasted on inside! Good chewiness. Light sauce application with extra on table for those who like more Pulled pork - great texture good flavor again light sauce application. BBQ sauce - mild spice heat is 3 of 10 and 1/4 sweet (general sweetness rating: whole sweet is honey or full sweet boba tea) Bring your own hot sauce they only have Tapatio Chef is awesome. Dang, these ribs are the bomb. Meat falls off the bone and it all so tender. Well, you'd probably wouldn't think a liquor store would have such good food but this hole in the wall is on point on their ribs. Sitting at a stoplight and smelling the food I decided to go in and turned out to be a really good choice. Food was so good. Sauce is spice and sweet. Portions are good size, place is just basic. The restaurant is inside a liquor store and for the looks of it, it's very popular. Absolute worst brisket in SD period! Amazed there are ratings so dang high! Undercooked, elastic and unrendered fat. Sliced super thin so it can even be edible. I gave their brisket sandwiches three tries over the years and every time it's been the same. Elastic, thinly sliced and re-heated on a flat top, drying it out more. I just gave them a 4th shot since they got a new smoker thinking they would get the cook right finally. Nope! Rubber and very little smoke flavor that even tasted a little "off." Anybody who knows "real bbq" would agree the brisket fails all the standards. Slices should be 1/4" thick minimum, will lay over the finger without breaking and pull apart with the slightest tug. It's an art form. I don't know what all the rave brisket reviews are about. Tells me folks clearly have no idea. Whoever runs the pit needs to maybe watch a YouTube video or two on the subject....just sayin. read more

Nestled inside the Ramona Liquor Store on the corner of Main Street and Hiway 67, this place has great food, substantial portions and darn good prices. I have recently moved back to town, and this was my first time ordering food from here, although I witnessed the considerable renovation that it took to create the restaurant, a couple years back. Even though it's a couple years old now, it's still spotless, like it's brand new. All the tables, floors and kitchen surfaces are very clean. The amount of menu items is crazy and creative. (Some folks have posted pics of the menu) Breakfast burritos, sandwiches, burgers, pulled pork, barbecued half chickens, bbq ribs, and many side dishes including potato salad, macaroni and cheese, Cole slaw and more. Great prices: a breakfast burrito is about $5.50 which is cheaper than nearby popular Mexican drive thru restaurants. My gyros sandwich was $8 (see my photo) and included French fries which were excellent, and obviously made from scratch as they were very uniquely seasoned, hot and crisp. I don't usually even eat French fries, but I made an exception for this place. Also: the renovation made room for many extra coolers. I'm pretty sure they have the best beer selection in Ramona. Yum. The good: - Great sides. The baked beans were a little spicy, sweet, and had an assertive bell pepper flavor, all in a good way. Coleslaw was mustard-based and pleasantly tangy. Fries were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, freshly prepared. - The garlic toast that came with my order was also great, especially dipped in the bean liquor. - Person taking our order was friendly and helpful. Lots of seating. The meh: - Gyro is made with sliced lamb, not gyro meat. - Ribs were dry and not well smoked. - Barbecue sauce was overly sweet and one-dimensional. The unforgivable: - My brisket was tough and in places inedible. I've eaten 'cue from STL to Houston to Kansas City to Austin. I've never seen brisket so poorly handled. Do not buy. Conclusion: I'd go here for the sides (and the store's killer beer selection), but the ribs were just "meh" and that brisket was a crime against the cow it came from. Maybe their burgers are good. But this is typical Cali barbecue (which is to say: bad), and not the hidden gem I had hoped for. Maybe if their pitmaster levels up a little more? read more
