PetSmart New York City was our choice for training our poodle pup. Kaila Gavin is our trainer. Kaila is patient, professional and skilled. We are learning along with our pup how to practice and master each skill. Kaila teaches us in class once a week then we practice at home. Our 9 month old has accomplished several skills and graduated puppy class. We are now in intermediate class. Instruction takes place in an isolated training room as well as in the isles of the crowded store. The challenge of using a skill in a busy environment helps our pup deal with the real world. Our goal is to have her pass the AKC public access test. Kaila knows the test and is helping us with accomplishing what is required. Can't say enough good things about Kaila. read more

After six weeks of an empty house, (the Balabusta is quiet), we chose to meet several felines to see if they might be a fit in our home. We went to Montclair and saw lovely felines but had no feeling for them other than they were cute and sweet. And then we met the people at Marrero Helping Paws and they could not have been nicer. When we found the greatest cat that ever lived, (Shelby, our late feline) we dealt with a nice group but we began to be concerned that although we had asked to adopt Shelby that we were being strung along. Well, after six weeks of mourning our loss of Shelby, we made a trip to the North Bergen Petsmart and met Marrero Helping Paws , a family run adoption group from North Bergen. They are the kindest, most helpful, most concerned, selfless group that we could have found. Needless to say, we adopted our new Prince from them and we could not be happier. Anyone in North Jersey, hell, anyone in the Country looking to adopt should check out their pets. Not only are we thrilled for having dealt with them and finding our homage to the greatest cat that ever lived, they were so helpful with the adoption and as I walked through the North Bergen Petsmart, they showed me all great items to buy. I was just at this location on 3 August and the service was horrendous !This has been happening one too many times !! they see that the lines are getting long and they have people stocking shelves instead of going to other registers and get the customers out of here quick but they just mop around and they don't give a shit !! One young girl to register could care less what I was saying to her. All she said was We're doing the best we can and that's a crock of shit because they had people stocking shelves that they could call to the other registers but they did nothing and everybody was frustrated and this happens all the time. They need to bring back their old manager the one who was out sick for a while. When things were slow he took over and he got things moving like they should! I am a frequent costumer at this location, and I never really have a problem. However, I've noticed their lack of care for the hermit crabs they keep. Early December of 2020, I planned on adding a new hermit crab to our hermit family. I picked one from the tank, which smelled like dead fish, and checked to make sure my crab alive. They insisted that it was "just moving" so I took it home. As I prepped it for a salt water bath, the crab literally dropped out of its shell. Being completely scarred from the experience, I rushed back to PetSmart. I was completely appalled... you should be tending to these creatures everyday, how can you not know they're dead. Especially with that smell coming from their tank. And then today, on another visit to this location, as I walk around I decide to check on the hermit crabs. And this is what I see. No matter how small or big a living thing is, it should be tended to everyday. Especially working in a pet store. Some may think hermit crabs are gross, but they deserve the same attention a kitten or puppy would. This makes me so sad. I wish I could just save them all. read more

I wish I could leave zero stars. My pup was injured at this location and I am kicking myself for being lazy and not looking for a new place. I have seen groomers yelling at dogs and being rough with them. The morning that I dropped of my dogs the place was a mess and they were completely unorganized. There was a groomer grooming a small shih tzu and she was yelling at him... ALOT! Before we walked out I learned that she was out little guy's groomer. I was uneasy, but you never think anything is actually going to happen...trust your instincts. She ended up cutting our pup with the clippers badly. He needed to get stitches and will be in a cone for 3 weeks. He is the sweetest (I know everyone says this) dog ever. The first year we had him he NEVER barked. To this day we say often that he doesn't even move most days. We still had our other dog getting a furminator there. They never called to tell us he was ready. When we got there he had to be taken back because he had more loose hair than when we dropped him off. The "manager" of the location proceeded to blame us for the incident with our little guy because we booked on-line. She said Lil' Ricky doesn't like that particular groomer - blaming our 5lb QUIET & TAME Yorkie. When something like this happens you don't do anything but apologize...NOTHING ELSE. On-line booking tools are there for convenience. A real manager would have checked the booking for the day and if she saw a pairing that didn't work she should have called us and figured out an alternative, but clearly management is not a skill she possesses. Neither is respect or common decency. We then noticed Lil' Ricky's pictures were on Instagram. You can't injure my dog and use his pictures for promotion of your business. I posted on IG and asked them to remove the images. Instead of doing so, they blocked me. Friends have since checked and my comments on the images (plural) were removed, but the images remain. It is very easy to take down an image on IG. This place is dangerous and they don't actually like or care for fur-babies. Be careful!!! read more

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS GROOMING SALON. A groomer clipped open a piece of my dog's ear! I'm thankful the vet was able to see him as soon as I left the salon! Never again will I be returning to this place. Now I am at a loss of what groomer to go too because I do not want my dog going through another trauma like this!! All the groomers at this salon look like they are college students who barely have two years of grooming experience under their belts! Love this Petsmart!!! It's location is perfect. Tons of parking. Employees are usually very helpful, happy to assist and are well aware of where everything is located within the store. My favorite part? It's very clean!! Yes, no puppy puddles on the floor and does not smell like a barn. Tons of different products available to meet the needs of your fur babies. If you have a new dog, ask for the puppy book with all the discounts to get you started. It really is an amazing starter package. Literally almost everything available on it I have used so far. They also have a cute toy selection for the dogs that suits the needs for ages and sizes. They also offer training classes for your dog which I would be highly interested in trying out in the future. Took my cat there because of good reviews. Total disaster! He came home limping and has the worst cut ever. I also noticed he had half the amount of whiskers on one side and after checking, I can confirm they cut half of his whiskers on the right side. They offered to redo the job but I refuse to bring him back where he was injured. They refunded me the $115. Never going back. read more

Large store off the main 1&9 road by and a bit behind the Wal-Mart here. Staff was friendly at the fish tanks as we looked around for our next potential pet, and there's a large grooming area in the back where people had taken their dogs today. Pricing is reasonable for fish and supplies (about the same as PetCo for most small items). Many of the exhibits were empty of pets, I guess that speaks of being busy! Only two cats in the adoption section available that day. The store was clean and otherwise timely, they started herding us towards the cashiers at 5:30 (about 30min before) in order to close up shop on Sunday. read more

This review is for the grooming only. I made an appointment for 9am on Saturday, and showed up about 3 minutes before. The groomer (Justine) was 20 minutes late, and before acknowledging me, instead slowly walked in and started chatting with her colleagues. After 5 minutes of chatting passed, she finally checked me in, asked me how I wanted her cut and if I'd like her nails cut. When I went to pick her up 3 hours later, there was a $22 surcharge for the nail clipping, which was never explained to me. The manager was fair and removed the charge, but the damage was done. My reviews are based on the grooming salon. My furbaby is five months and was not treated well. The young ladies name was Stephanie who shaved his fur completely and kept pulling his legs to shave them. Clearly, he was nervous and not once she bothered calming him down. I was very upset! To make the story short they weren't even able to finish his grooming. They asked me to reschedule again. Instead, I scheduled an appointment with GROOMIT ( a service that comes to your house)and the groomer was amazing!!!! read more

RUDE and unprofessional store manager. He yelled at me and accused me of allowing my dog to pee in the store in front of a line filled with customers. When I told him that it wasn't my dog, he then said he didn't care and that he's tired of cleaning up dog pee! I proceeded to advise him that he works for a pet store and it's unprofessional to treat customers in this manner. He continued to argue with me. When I asked for his name, another worker said to me "if you can argue with him then you can ask his name". He refused to give me his name. I have never been treated so poorly in this store. I have been taking my Aggie to Janice for over three years since moving to NJ and she leaves there beautiful, smelling nice and looking good. She actually groomed like I wanted and not in the typical poodle look. Janice has always been very nice and beyond accommodating with my crazy work schedule. I always loved the seasonal pictures she would take of Aggie. Her previous groomer never did that. Janice even wrote down what she would do to her so I can let Aggie's next groomer know what she did in the Pawgress report. I will miss taking Aggie in for her grooming with Janice. I am disgusted that the new management has chosen to remove Animal Life Savers from this location. My family adopted three cats from this rescue organization and it breaks my heart to see them go. I love the Training section; my doggie has learned a lot and I do see the difference between when he was without any command and now, that he has some knowledge. Kevin, the trainer is wonderful; Toby graduated from the beginner training last Saturday, and Kevin gave the doggies some nice treats, diploma, all of that. We had fun; took some nice pics... Anyways, I like the way the trainer develops the class; he is kind and cuddles my little puppy, which I like. This has got to be the worst petsmart I've ever walked into. Some of the dog food smells disgusting and not only that there were RODENT DROPPINGS on top of the food. That is UNACCEPTABLE. I took a picture and will be sending them to corporate. I needed help reaching a bag but there was no employees in sight. This place is terribly understaffed. There was two helpful employees there. I will also be contacting corporate about the mice situation. I went to get my dog groomed and there was no place to sit. DO NOT GO HERE. I recently took my two dogs for their usual grooming appointment, and although there was an unfortunate incident where my dogs apparently had diarrhea, the manager Brian went ABOVE AND BEYOND to ameliorate the situation. I have NEVER seen someone in management be so accommodating and caring with his customers. Took my dog to get groomed here. The service took about 4 hours (I dropped her off) and the associates in the grooming salon were very rude and unattentive. I hate leaving negative reviews but this place is horrible... well, the PEOPLE were horrible. Today's 1 star review is for the GROOMING SALON only. I am not rating the store. Our King Charles Cavalier is usually nicely groomed by "Grace", who was not available this holiday weekend, so we chose Margarita, who worked on Coco-Puff before. We explained that Coco is fighting lymph node Cancer and going through Chemo treatments, and to be very gentle with her needing extra TLC. I should have listened to my "inner voice" when Margarita replaced Coco's harness with a blue "choker" leash and started to pull her against her will (and CHOKE her). I halted this immediately and she carried Coco to the back instead. We asked for her usual close but not TOO close trim using the #5 blade, careful not to cut the ears, etc. When we returned a few hours later to pick her up, Margarita was gone and there stood our ghastly, unhappy doggie, her left eye BEET RED, big uneven splotches of pink skin where white fur should be, and what looks like a cross between a buzz cut and a lobotomy at the the top of her head! I don't know who was more miserable, Coco or US as our hearts just sank. We voiced our displeasure and another groomer attempted to help "make it even" by shaving down the areas that at least looked half descent while pouring what she called "chlorine" into Coco's inflamed eye. I said don't you mean "Saline"? and she comforted us that this might have happened due to stress or a stroke! I reminded them that Coco is a cancer patient undergoing Chemo, and they answered...."Right Now?"...she has to go now? NO...you idiots, do people and schools no longer teach 20 year olds ANYTHING? They offered us a free re-do, yeah right....like we would ever endanger our precious furry daughter by bringing her back there again. At the end of it all, no apologies, just excuses, making us more and more infuriated. Here are the photos I just posted as PROOF, so you don't think we are exaggerating. Her groomer, Chynna, is the absolute best! She takes her time to explain how Zoey's spa day went, she gives me tips I need to know to care for my dog's groooming & health needs at home and she just genuinely loves Zoey. The other groomers have always been just as friendly as Chynna. I have never seen any dog scratch the front doors of a grooming salon to get in and Zoey does. Seeing the groomer is no longer a scary thing for my little dog and that makes me happy. read more

Don't take you dog there! Very disappointed! My shih tzu has beautiful long hair, we told them not to cut too much an inch max. They cut 3-4 inches from his body hair and too much in his face too. They took 4 hours, and he was very scared when we picked him up, it took a few hours for him to go back to normal. Taylor was the one doing the job. She did the opposite of what we wanted! Never shop here again! PetCo and online services moving forward! We regret to inform you that after 11 years Animal life Savers will no longer be at the Petsmart store in North Bergen. Welcome to the Corporate World! I never saw this coming as we have been there since the opening of the Petsmart store and have helped hundreds of people and found thousands of homes for animals within those years. A new manager that came there to "clean up shop" is what he told me, just decided to add us to his list. I believe he had his own agenda for an organization that he knows can perform better adoption numbers. It's all about numbers at Petsmart. We always had good relationships with the other managers that came and left the store. For 15 years Animal Life Savers once a month meets adopters, foster homes and family pets to pick up their animals in the Petsmart parking lot to coordinate a spay, neuter transport. (this is even before Petsmart opened.) The Petsmart store videotaped our February spay, neuter pick up and sent it to corporate. We received an email on Wednesday that we were suspended and had 72 hours to pick up all our cats in the room. Four days later we received an email stating we were terminated for having a shot clinic in the parking lot. They did not answer our calls or emails so we can explain what we were doing in that video. After reading our agreement again, you are not allowed to conduct any business in the Petsmart parking lot, and it now lies on deaf ears even to explain anything. I am very disappointed in the way we were treated, and the North Bergen store will not receive any of my shopping business while this manager is there. My honest opinion is that it was strictly because of him and he did everything he could to get rid of us. While we restructure our organization and reach out to new places to hold adoption events, we hope you will stand by us during this most trying time. FISH : Went here on the weekend to look to pick up a few fish from their aquarium section. Stood there for 15-30 mins with no one in the area. Went to ask for help from a GROUP of people in the middle aisle, was told there is a lady for the area, pointed to a lady walking briskly , I caught up to that lady, and she scurried into the back of the fish area never to be seen again. Also, standing there for another 15 mins waiting for the only lady in the store who can possibly help us, I started to look in the tanks. Dead fish in almost 30 percent of their tanks. All with shared water. No one cleaning up dead fish in any of the tanks (and it was the afternoon, not the morning) - Doesnt speak well of the fish in the tanks, you will bringing home to your healthy fish. So after like an hr of no help and looking at dead fish in the tanks, I decided, why am I doing here? Just go to FISH HUT in Saddle Brook, ABsolutely Fish in Clifton or Reef Encounter just UP the block on 46 in Hackensack. This is not the place for service or for fish. read more

I booked my dogs grooming appt for today Saturday 2/6 five days prior. Today when arriving to drop my dog off for services I was told my dog would not be seen today. The excuse I was given is that they were "too busy" to take him. His appt was already set days in advance. If at some point throughout the day you noticed you were behind and short staffed why not call those with upcoming appts and let them know they can't be seen today and at least offer us an opportunity to reschedule. I absolutely love the grooming salon here. I have never been disappointed with the grooming that my precious Roxie receives. I jave gone to other petsmarts in the beginning and always had an issue. I have been sticking to the same groomer, Michelle, because she is the best. She treats Roxie like its her own and is always pleasant. read more
