I've heard such horror stories about deep cleanings under anesthesia and the last thing I want to do is put my dog in danger. My dog, Roo, had shiny, pearly whites after her cleaning and her bad breath was gone! The vet/nurse I spoke with afterwards was very knowledgeable. She told me that Roo has an enamel condition that can cause more plaque buildup than usual which requires more tooth brushing. She gave me tips such as using a children's toothbrush instead of a finger brush, using specific toothpaste, etc. Roo's gums would when I use to brush her teeth which made me think I had to do it less often, but the vet/nurse reassured me that I was doing that right thing and that the more I brushed, the less she'd bleed. I was skeptical about coming here at first because my dog (Bailey) is very anxious and does not like having her teeth touched, but Maia, Dr. Sarah Daniel, and the hygienist were amazing! My dog is 7.5 years old and just had a cleaning under anesthesia at the vet less than a year ago, but her teeth were already starting to develop large amounts of calculus so I decided to give Pettooth a try as COHAT cleanings at the vet are very expensive (usually around $3,000) and the dogs have to go under anesthesia, which is not ideal especially when they are getting older. Dr. Sarah Daniel and Maia took pictures of the concerns with Bailey's teeth and went over everything in detail, I got more answers and advice about what to do than I did at our usual vet! Unfortunately, I was informed that Bailey will need some extractions but given her age and the fact that she just went under anesthesia less than a year ago they were willing to try and do her dental cleaning anyway. To my surprise the hygienist was able to get all of the calculus off and there was a noticeable difference in Bailey's teeth after the cleaning. I will still need to go to our regular vet to get a COHAT cleaning for Bailey and some extractions done, but Pettooth bought us some time in the meantime and made Bailey feel very comfortable. They cleaned his teeth beautifully for $275. I $50 was for the exam and $225 for the cleaning. The dentist came out afterwards, carefully explained the condition of his teeth, showed me photos, and discussed how to continue his care, including tooth brushing at home. They also told me that if his teeth ever need to be cleaned under anesthesia, there's a place in Tracy (Pet Advocate) that will do it for about $600, including x-rays. I am so happy I came here! They saved me a ton of dough, and will continue to help me save in the future. Please be aware that when you put down the $50 deposit, it's to pay for the exam. This charge is non-refundable. They have to do the exam to see if they will be able to clean the pet's teeth. If the teeth are in very bad shape, you have to have it done under anesthesia at another vet's. beware if your dog has dental disease, they won't be able to do the cleaning AND they will keep your $$$. I was charged the $45 dollar booking fee for each of my pets. Upon a quick look, the vet said she is unable to clean one of them due to dental disease. The exam took less than 10 seconds. Basically the vet lifted her cheeks and peeked at her gum, then peeked the other side right in front of me. The $45 is non refundable. I looked on their website and no where did it say "if you dog has dental disease, the $45 deposit will be non refundable". I asked why it was non refundable, it's because of their time spent working in shop and the exam fee. I think a better way to do business is to be very specific that if your dog has periodontal disease, please don't sign up for this service. I knew my dog has dental disease. I didn't need her exam to tell me this. I left feeling pretty ripped off. As a customer I want to feel satisfied leaving with the services rendered. I feel terrible. Getting charged $45 for a ten second exam fee feels like a major rip off. I paid another $250 for my other dog. I did not get a receipt, nor did I sign any reciepts. Early my mostly malamute 2 year old pup is a really sweet girl, she can be a bit wrigley sometime, but otherwise great temperament and with patience from strangers she will let you do anything! Aslyn is our old man at 11 years old. He's not so wrigley, and is a patient guy. Verena worked on Aslyn's teeth and was very informative about his teeth health and shared how he did in the mobile bus. They were able to clean all of his teeth and let me know that there were some stains that comes with old age. Maia also gave me a ton of helpful information about Early after she was done. She wasn't able to get ALL of her teeth, but I appreciated what she was able to do. I definitely saw a difference in my pups teeth and plan to keep brushing it daily to help keep her gums healthy. She let us know that we will be reminded in 6 months to come back. Unfortunately, it is a slight hassle to make 2 trips, but I it's worth it to see these two! They were so kind. I was recommended to contact Maia for a dog dental evaluation/dog teeth cleaning by two of my Y friends who took their dogs to see Maia. It is very easy to go online and read the information about Maia and her dog whisperer bedside manner and schedule a dental evaluation as well to first see if your dog is eligible or not nervous about being touched by Maia. You pay upfront for the dental evaluation and then you schedule it. The day of the dental evaluation was rather stressful for our dog, Bebe as we had workers coming and going into our house to do work and I had to put her in the crate to make her feel secure and safe. Then Bebe's appointment with Maia was at the lunch hour on a weekday and the nearby high school students were being released out into the streets for lunch and parking is also a premium in that area on Broadway where Maia does her evaluations/dental cleanings. Maia is located inside the store of PetVet. Parking is a premium and with the high school students milling about outside PetVet, Bebe was a bit skittish. So when I finally found parking and rushed over to the pet store, luckily, Maia had just finished up with a client and was alittle behind schedule so we weren't too late for our appointment. Bebe, however, was skittish and nervous as Maia tried to hold her and calm her down. I would not recommend Maia. The way this place works is first you pay a $20-25 teeth exam to let the tech see if your dog is workable/unaggressive for the actual teeth cleaning visit, which is around $120. Therefore, you need to make two separate trips: one for the exam and one for the cleaning. Some of their other offices that charge higher rates work a little differently and they will let you do the teeth exam and the teeth cleaning same day. I've been to the Oakland location a while back. A different vet tech worked on my dog, and told me my dog was sweet and she was able to complete the teeth cleaning appointment. That visit went smoothly because it was not with Maia. Their after-visit summary mentioned aside from typical plaque build up, nothing was wrong with my dog, and the cleaning went well. Fast forward to this year. With Maia, she canceled and rescheduled my dog's appointment three times due to COVID and SIP orders. This was understandable and I had no issues with this. Because the first visit went well I did not think twice to need to search for other alternative cleaning appointments. In a few email exchanges, she wrote my dog may have an abscess on her left gums when I sent her a few pictures showing the dirty teeth. She told me I needed to take my dog to the vet to get it checked out. I scheduled a SPCA vet visit and they said everything was fine. Just dirty teeth. So I patiently waited for Maia's clinic to open back up. Last week, I was super excited she was able to fit me into the books for the cleaning. I took my dog in and drove across bridges for the appointment. Within 5-10 mins of dropping my dog off with her, she called me to let me know she cannot continue with the teeth cleaning because my dog was snappy. She said she looked at the notes of the previous exam and there were notes saying my dog was hard to work with. Shocking! Why was nothing mentioned during the first visit regarding this? She again insisted there might be something wrong with the gums but this time instead of the left side, she said it's on both sides now since my dog did not like it when she was prodding there. She said the vet could do imaging for my dog. Maia also told me my dog needs her teeth examined and cleaned under general anesthesia. Many know and even strangers my dog has NEVER EVER been snappy to anyone including children, other dogs, and humans. Maia clearly did NOT have the patience to work with my dog. I took my dog in to another vet today after listening to her recommendation. The second vet at animal kind novato AGAIN confirmed there was nothing wrong with the gums or teeth. They also mentioned my dog was super sweet and let them examine her teeth with no problems. There is just tartar/plaque build-up that can be taken care of by a regular teeth cleaning. No infection. No abscess. No extractions needed. This second vet mentioned my dog did not even need an x-ray since the teeth looked normal. So it's clear to me that it wasn't bc there was some medical issue that prevented Maia from working with my dog, it's due to the fact Maia lacks the patience or skill to make your dog feel comfortable. This is to let you know I would not trust Maia's knowledge or patience with your dog. She is NOT PATIENT. She does not appear to listen and I have never seen my dog so terrified after leaving her mobile bus clinic. I am super annoyed I wasted all this time emailing back and forth, driving hours to the appointment with no end results, and taking my dog into two different vets just to tell me the teeth is dirty. I also wasted a dental cleaning exam for no reason. Her prices are cheap but you get what you pay for. In the end, your time and energy could be better spent elsewhere. read more

I am so glad I had my dogs teeth cleaned! I had been feeling guilty about not brushing them regularly and they looked really gross. I tried that enzyme gel stuff that you just put a drop on, but that doesn't deep clean. As Maia said, the best thing was to brush. So now we have a clean slate and I'm brushing both my dogs teeth almost every night! I'm using the gel when I'm too tired, because, lets face it, it's not the easiest thing to do with your dog. They liked the chicken flavor toothpaste but I ran out of that and this different brand beef flavor doesn't seem to be as tasty. Here's a bit about her process. You must schedule an evaluation for Maia to see if the pet will allow her to handle it's mouth. If the dog doesn't cooperate, she'll decline. One of my dogs passed and the other wouldn't let her get close (rescue dog issues). The cleaning for my Zen Boy was scheduled 1 week after eval, on a Sunday at the petvet Oakland store. Maia wrapped my little dog in a towel and had him on her lap. I peeked in the window a few times and saw her scraping away. He didn't squirm or cry and was not freaked out. She said he handled it very well. For $80 he now has clean white teeth! Maia Bee did a great job explaining dental issues and even showed me a better way to brush their teeth. I sought dental specialist care and my dog needed teeth pulled. She is a much happier girl without those bothersome teeth and healthier gums...and her last cleaning was quick and easy...her teeth nice and white and bright. One thing I learned from Maia and through all of this is that brushing daily with warm water and soft toothbrush is SO worth taking the short amount of time to do. It's part of our bedtime routine...and if you have a little dog, the Colgate Wisp (disposable traveling toothbrush) works awesome in a small dog's mouth. Maya is amazing. Having someone hand scale your pets teeth without anesthesia is definitely the way to go! Of *course* you should be brushing your dog's teeth daily but honestly most of us don't. Maya has an amazing ability to calmly clean the dogs teeth. Nobody ever thinks my dog is 7! read more

Great service at a fraction of the price of vets and even other dog cleaning services. Maia was very honest and straightforward during the consultation for both my pups. One's teeth were just too poor to work on, and the other was pretty bad but she was willing to take a stab. She ended up doing a great job in approximately 30-40 minutes. I will definitely be coming back. The only tough thing is street parking depending on the time of day that you go. read more
