Pastrami Stack. Really good, but salty as hell!
    Tim S.

Was craving a sandwich, and this spot had been on my list for awhile now. I decided to drive down and check it out. I parked about a block away and walked down the street. Order outside at the window, and then they call your name to pick up your food. I went with a Pastrami Stack (Thick cut pastrami, mustard, Swiss cheese and cole slaw on some marbled rye). It was about $25.00. I hung out to the side and they called my name. They hooked me up with some pickles and peppers and I took my tray to a picnic bench to dig in. How was it? Solid! Pastrami Sandwich- This sandwich looked great! I dug in and was pretty impressed. The pastrami was incredibly smokey flavored (I loved it) and had a great chew. The mustard mix was tasty, the cheese nice and melty, and the cole slaw gave it some nice texture. The only thing I didn't really like was the bread. It was ok, but a little too griddled/toasted and rough in my mouth. Also, the sandwich was extremely salty. While eating, my mouth was bone dry and started to puff up...that type of salty! I powered through though, and really enjoyed the sandwich. The place is cool! There is a ton of seating available, and they have a full attached bar next door. Would be a cool spot to watch a game, have some drinks, and enjoy some food. I would definitely come back, just armed with a ton of water ;-).

Pastrami with Swiss, cole slaw and mustard on grilled marble rye. That is a HALF sandwich.

Found myself close by, so I just had to stop by for a bite of lunch. This time I grabbed the Pastrami Burnt Ends and the Jalapeño Mac & Cheese. The staff was friendly and fast as always, and while the patio was mostly empty at this early time, it was thrumming with music and the anticipation of a crowd showing up to watch World Cup matches. The Pastrami Burnt Ends were both crispy and juicy, with a rich, highly seasoned flavor that really hits the pleasure centers. A dab of the included whole grain mustard provides the perfect, acidic contrast to the fatty cut, and rounds out the bite nicely. They also include a side of their slightly spicy house-made Russian dressing; this is also a savory, enjoyable dab, but may be a tad too unctuous for some. The Jalapeño Mac & Cheese is pretty darned fantastic. Creamy without being soupy, cheesy without being over the top, and spicy without overkill. A very well-rounded recipe that's very satisfying. I also really appreciate the individualized serving in a small pie pan with breadcrumb topping: it's a presentation that's much more appealing than a mere scoop into a cup. The folks here really do pay attention to everything. My second time here, and my second time really loving it. Next time I've gotta try their sausage -- others were eating those, and they looked amazing.

I stopped in here for lunch over the weekend, not knowing anything about the menu beforehand. I walked up to the window, saw a picture of their Johnny Burger and decided on the spot that that's what I wanted. What a hefty burger alone! It was overloaded with pastrami and came with a pickle slice on the side. Honestly, I didn't even need fries because the burger was enough for me. They also have a nice outdoor space with shaded tables that makes for a nice gathering spot to enjoy your meal and hang out.

I've been eating at Johnny's Pastrami for over 30 years. After the ownership changed, I heard a lot of the recipes had changed too, so I decided to just remember it the way it used to be and stopped going. Recently, I decided to give it another chance and ordered a pastrami sandwich. I was pleasantly surprised -- it was delicious. The service was good, the food came out fast, and the place had a great atmosphere. It was busy on a beautiful day, and people were hanging out enjoying themselves. My only complaint is that they no longer have the delicious kosher pickles and peppers that were always a staple at the original restaurant. Other than that, I'm happy I gave them another shot.

Stopped by Johnnie's Pastrami and everything was solid. We ordered the Johnny Fries, the Johnny Burger, and the pastrami sandwich -- and the pastrami was easily my favorite part of the meal. The thicker-cut slices were tender, fatty, juicy, and packed with flavor in the best way. The Johnny Fries were nicely loaded without being over the top, and even the coleslaw surprised me. It had a slight sweetness that worked really well with the richer food. Great vibe overall too -- good cocktails, relaxed atmosphere, and the kind of place where you accidentally keep eating even after saying you're full.

Johnny's Pastrami on West Adams has been highly recommended by my Yelp Buddy Joseph A. for some time now, so I'm glad we were able to finally check it out. Their parking lot has been converted to an outdoor seating area, but my boyfriend and I got lucky with street parking nearby. We got super lucky because there was no line when we came, but we saw a long line when we were leaving so we probably just dodged their peak hours. You order at the cashier and they give you a pager that goes off when you're ready. My boyfriend and I shared a Full Pastrami Sandwich ($21) with thick sliced pastrami on rye bread and potato salad, a Matzo Ball Soup ($13), a Banana Cream Pie ($6) for Pi day, and a Mexican Coke ($4). I appreciate that they were able to note that my pie was for later and we were able to pick it up later on with the receipt. All of the seating is outdoor. You seat yourself. There were plenty of tables but it was a hot day and not many shaded spots. We got a somewhat shaded table. When we got our food, everything was wrapped up and even taped up. I feel like it's a bit wasteful and unnecessary when we're eating it there. As for the food, the pastrami sandwich was really good. The thick cut definitely differentiate them from the competitors in this category. The marble rye was good too. I just thought that the sandwich is on the small side. The matzo ball soup was delicious. If I lived closer this is something I would repeat order any time I'm under the weather. The potato salad came with half an egg which I liked because I love eggs. The complimentary pickles were nice too. Then we get our banana cream pie. It was more cream than banana but we were being festive for pi day so it is what it is. Not something I would get again but it was convenient for me to knock out my pi day pie. Come here for that thick pastrami and matzo ball soup! Thanks Joseph A. for the recommendation!

Yikes! A guest and I rolled through with a major appetite looking forward to a good footlong or at least to split one. Little did we expect to be at Jersey Mike's (my next review) in less than an hour! Wow this Johnny pastrami is normally is a high performer both in quality of food and crew, but today was a major letdown. All of the food pictured came out cold and the fries tasted like they were redone. So while the optics were there, the actual product sucked. Perhaps this was due to the fact that we arrived prior to the rush or the lunch crowd, but still no one goes to Johnny pastrami for a sandwich of coldness.

Amazing portion size. Walked there for lunch. No wait. Good little patio seating area. Fries were amazingly crispy and crunchy. Loved the aioli sauce that came with them. Overall will come again.

Johnny's Pastrami is a long time classic in this area. It's one of the places I always look forward to visiting when in the area. Their Pastrami sandwiches are always flavorful and definitely filling. The outdoor dining area is large and there's an establishment directly a few feet away where you can enjoy an adult beverage while watching a game.

Thick Sliced on Rye Pastrami Reuben $22.00
    Erik G.

Johnny's has been on my list, and I finally made it! The pastrami was calling, and I had to answer. Here are the three sandwich styles: Mustard (mixed mustard and meat), Stacked (mixed mustard, coleslaw, and Swiss cheese), and Reuben (Thousand Island, Swiss cheese, and sauerkraut). It costs an extra dollar for the Stacked or Reuben styles. I ordered the Thick Sliced on Rye Pastrami Reuben ($22.00). It came with generous heaps of pastrami that had a good smoky flavor, but it was a bit salty, oily, and fatty. I'm big time fan of Rye and the toasted Marble Tartine was a good, but a bit of a mouthful and hard to chew. The sauerkraut complemented the sandwich well. The thousand island dressing wasn't overpowering and it took a backseat to the BBQ flavor. The complimentary pickles and peppers were a nice touch, and the potato salad had a nice, sweet tang and I like how there was an egg on top with a sprinkle of paprika. Overall, it was a heavy meal and very filling even for a big boy like me, and the sandwich would be better shared. It's not something I could eat every day, but once in awhile.

Finally we made it to West Adams to try the legendary Johnny's pastrami. It's an old school spot that in recent years has had a total upgrade on the location yet same old delicious food! The neighborhood has started to show signs of revitalization and thanks to Johnny's you have a cool place to eat and hangout in the bar and/or the backyard patio. My son and I shared the original thin cut dip and the toasted marbled rye thick cut "stacked style" with coleslaw and swiss cheese and a side of fries. First bite test - Crunchy toasted outside, sweet and juicy pastrami with creamy swiss and coleslaw inside. Unbelievable taste. Hard to truly describe without it melting in your own mouth. Hayden's first bite! "Says Dad it's better than Langers!" I said hush your mouth sucker! Until I too dove in! (Different but equally the best sando in LA!) a true delight. We followed up with the original which was light and tasty and easily great in its own but the marbled thick cut won over our hearts. The super crispy fries are great and we both loved them. It's worth the drive.

    The Pastrami Dip sandwich
    Rich E.

TL;DR: Pastrami is delicious as expected potato salad is good too. Parking is a problem. So I happen to be in the area and wanted to try Johnny's pastrami I am a fan of some of the other fast food places with the huge pastrami sandwiches that are dipped in the pastrami juice so I went with the Pastrami Dip instead of the regular pastrami. I noticed that the meat is not all fatty like most other places. The sandwich as a little messy because of the dipping in the juice but the sandwich was really good. Also got a side of potato salad and that was good too as it had a half of boiled egg on top. This is definitely a sandwich worth to try if you like pastrami. But I did not have a good experience finding parking. There is valet service but I'm not going to valet for a fast food place. The place is adjacent to a neighborhood so you are looking for spots in front of houses and it was difficult to find something. Took me about a good 15 minutes to find parking. Aside from the parking, Johnnys is definitely worth a visit, especially if you like a juicy pastrami sandwich.

Johnny's Pastrami Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Johnny's Pastrami

What is it like to host events there? Their website says you can book the place for private events.

I can't say for sure, as I haven't had an event there -- but they have a good deal of space outside with tables and a pretty large indoor bar area. You can definitely host a good number of people there for an indoor/outdoor event. I can imagine…

Is the Pastrami prepared like the original Johnnie Pastrami?

Yes. However, needed to be a bit more wet.

Do they deliver or do have to order from a delivery company?

I'm sure they do Uber eats and door dash I do not believe they have a self delivery system though,

Are 18 year olds allowed in the outside area?

    Yes, they are

What are your hours of operation and is there a need for a reservation?

No need to reserve. You order from a walk-up window. Go get some food!

Is there any place to park?

Yes, there is private lot right to the west of the restaurant

Is this Johnnie's affiliated with the Johnnie's in Culver City?

    No it's not. T

Are the chefs using charcoal lighter fluid for the burnt ends pastrami? I got a Johnny burger and a brisket sandwich & they both smelled & tasted of charcoal lighter fluid.

It is a more Smokey flavor, but it did not taste like lighter fluid to me. I think it is just the wood that they are using to cook the meat.

How do you order for delivery?

    Postmates app. 👍

I forgot to ask the cashier this question when I was there earlier, but how many calories does the crispy chicken sandwich have, and how much sodium does it contain????…

Did you actually ask this? Answer: if you are worried about calories or sodium content then don't…

This location on Wilshire Blvd in Koreatown is the smallest of the three I've visited, with under 10 seats available. It's a compact shop, and most customers opt for takeout. It's a narrow shop, and most customers take their orders to-go. I've previously enjoyed the La Paradiso and La Toscana, with the La Paradiso being my personal favorite. For our first visit with our son, we asked the staff for recommendations, and they suggested either the Venice Beach (Turkey) or the New Yorker (Roast Beef). The staff was incredibly generous, offering a roast beef sample, which our son loved! We also appreciated them providing ice and straws for our water. We ordered the New Yorker ($19.00) with roast beef, porcini cream, tomato, and arugula. The sandwich was thoughtfully cut in half, perfect for sharing. The schiacciata bread boasts a crispy exterior and a soft, chewy interior, which beautifully complements the meats and cheeses. We opted to substitute the porcini cream for mozzarella, which was sliced into perfect bite-sized pieces and tasted incredibly fresh. The roast beef was thinly sliced and tender, the tomatoes were fresh and sliced to perfection, and the arugula added a delightful peppery crunch. It's a well-balanced sandwich and one of the best in LA. We would definitely order it again. A big thank you to the female staff member who expertly cut the meat and offered samples, assisting us in making the perfect choice for my son's sandwich. This experience was truly a positive one for our family. I would definitely return to AAV for the excellent food and service.
