Solid Vietnamese restaurant for LA with cheap prices! I visited this restaurant around 2pm with a friend in Chinatown and we were able to get seated right away. To share we had: -Dac Biet Banh Mi: Standard and solid. I've had better elsewhere, but pretty good for $9. -Com Suon Bi Cha: Pork was delicious and charred well. I also loved the shredded pork and steamed pork loaf. With the rice and veggies, everything was great together and there was good variety. For $16, this was such good value. The service here was also pretty good and our server was super nice. He apologized to us for waiting to order, but we didn't even wait long! This place needs to update their business hours.Yes we got here 15 min before closing but in our defense they are supposed to be open to seating people until the time of closing, that's the point of the schedule hours they advertise. I'm very disappointed in this experience. We even had to pay for parking and couldn't enjoy a sit down meal. Good place, not great. I ordered the Pho Dac Biet, which was just basic pho. The noodles are not the typical pho noodles that regular places use, instead, the rice noodles they use are more rounded out and less sticky. Service was quick, as expected with the usual pho establishments. They do charge you an extra credit card fee of 3% which I did not remember seeing anywhere on the menu. Only saw it when the bill came out, so just a heads up. All in all, the only pho place around Chinatown, so pretty much take it or leave it. We went here with a party of 5 for lunch on a Tuesday at around 12 pm. It was fairly packed for lunch, and we had to wait about 15 minutes before we got a seat. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There are seats inside and outside. It is relatively small inside and can hold maybe 20 customers.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Because the restaurant was full inside, we were seated outside. I ordered Bun Nem Nuong. The portion size is very large, so you will definitely get your money's worth and be full. Normally, I'd assume if a restaurant has a long menu, that usually means they don't specialize in any one meal, so the quality might be lacking. Therefore, the shorter the menu, the more they can perfect a meal, and this restaurant did not disappoint. Growing up in a Vietnamese community, this restaurant has better quality than the ones I've had growing up. The Bun Nem Nuong isn't as popular probably because most people would choose Bun Thit Nuong (basically pork chops). Although both were good, I encourage you to try the Nem Nuong (basically Asian spam, except sweeter). The nuoc mam (fish sauce) that comes with it isn't salty, so it is recommended you pour spoonfuls of it into the meal and mix it around to give the full flavor. It has plenty of veggies, so it is diluted and won't give you high blood pressure. Our server was super friendly and helpful in answering all of our questions. My coworkers (non-Asian) had a food allergy, so she was limited in food options, but the server was helpful in guiding what she could eat. Overall, the food quality lives up to its high rating. A hidden Vietnamese gem in La Banh xeo:7.5/10 Banh xeo is crispy and has a different texture from banh xeo I've had in the past but I enjoyed it. The fish sauce, however, was super watered down. I ended up customizing it by adding in more fish sauce, sambal and lime! Hu tieu wonton: 3/10 a hu tieu served with wontons, broccoli, shrimp, imitation crab, fish balls and fish cake. Toppings were plentiful. The broth tasted unseasoned and tasted like hot water :( Pho Bac biet: 5.5/10 the beef is good quality and tender but the broth tasted bland. Pretty good vegetarian pho which is hard to find. The broth is a bit simple but a good base for adding the fixings of your choice. They are very generous with their portion sizes and the vegetables are fresh. I like that they give you a little dish on the side to put your sauce in. Dare I say... this is the best pho I've had in Los Angeles proper? We started with the banh cuon, which honestly could've been the whole meal -- soft, savory, and loaded with flavor. Before starting our journey back to the Bay Area, we wanted to get a couple of banh mi sandwiches. I found Thien Houng restaurant on Yelp in Chinatown that was open early. It's a tiny Vietnamese restaurant in the middle of a building that straddles Hill and Broadway. There are tables and seating in the middle of the walkway. They make everything to order so I sat outside watching the restaurant fill up. I ordered two special banh mi and an iced Vietnamese iced coffee. The sandwiches were larger than normal.
