For being an off-highway northwoods log-cabin style restaurant /bar with a dirt parking lot, the actual food and dining experience is something entirely different. I started with the grilled octopus and it may've been my favorite thing - the lemony octopus was served with its accompaniments in a deconstructed style that was just tasty together. I had an entree from their specials menu - halibut with spring peas, leeks, frisee - and was not disappointed. I went with an upgrade to the pear and gorgonzola salad and am very glad I did! Their desserts are fantastic and we were told all but one or two are made in-house (yay!). I had the budino and it was so rich I couldn't finish it - but I would very much recommend it, the salt/sweet balance is nice. Minus one star because my husband ordered a lamb shank and it was served on cheesy orzo. He said the lamb was very dry and that he would never put lamb with anything that tasted so close to mac and cheese. He was pretty disappointed with his meal. Hopefully we'll stop by again - their menu has many, many good looking things on it, and the specials/seasonal menu had at least 3 additional entrees and a salad (if not sold out). read more

Not from here, but stopped in based on Yelp... Could not be more happy with the decision. Part one : The apps... We had the octopus, the Tuna Poke (on the specials menu) and oysters 2 ways... The octopus was, for the first time ever in my experience, completely tender... The poke has a fresh taste... It was delectable. I am not much of an oyster fan, but it put both my wife and daughter in a great mood, so must have been special. Part 2: The soup. It was clam chowder... It did not disappoint at all and hit all of the proper notes. My wife also said, and she is a ranch enthusiast, that it was the finest example of restaurant ranch she has ever had... And she said ever a couple times. Main course: The Ribeye. Amaze balls! Not often is black and blue raw as well prepared or as flavorful... The sides held to the same high standards set by all the other elements of the meal. End of the day, this was our last meal before we get on a plane and end our vacation... And we could not have made a better decision... I would put this place right up there with the big name chef haunts... Truly great! read more

Ate here last night with my parents. I have been to Phil's many times over the years, and it has always been good. Last night we gave our name to the hostess since there was a little wait. But we took advantage of the nice patio area outside and had some drinks while we waited. We waited about 20 minutes and then were brought back into the restaurant by the hostess. She sat us at our table and immediately after our waitress came for drink orders. She also gave us a run down of their specials. Looking at the menu, trying to decide what to order. Everything looks so good on their menu. But we narrowed it down and were ready to order. I ordered the chicken Corinthian. And their soup of the day which was split pea with chorizo sausage. The soup came out along with some naan bread. The soup was good. It had a pretty good amount of heat with the chorizo, and had nice flavor with carrots and onion. It was nice to have to bread with the soup to dull down the heat a little bit as it was pretty spicy, but I knew ordering chorizo it would be. I only wish that the pieces of sausage were a little bigger. They were really small, ground pieces. The soup needed a little more substance to it. But otherwise good flavor. Then the Corinthian came. It was a crispy phyllo dough, stuffed with chicken, spinach and feta on a bed of saffron orzo. The saffron orzo was so creamy and flavorful. But the stuffed phyllo dough was amazing. Large pieces of juicy chicken. Just the right amount of spinach, and tons of flavor. I am so glad I ordered that. I was debating over a steak, which I will have to try next time. My dad ordered a steak and I was able to try a piece and it was so good! This is definitely on the list to come back soon! A great meal. read more

I want to love this place, I really do. The good: It's down to earth. The Greek food seems very authentic, but then again what do I know. The wait staff is friendly and attentive, but not in-your-face. We went with our two-year-old, so the noisier atmosphere was good, because she could be a toddler and not disrupt other patrons. The bad: It's loud. Sound seems to reverb from every corner. If there is a louder-than-average patron, you will hear them and not the conversation with your party. I thought the older gentlemen at the table next to us were going to "take it outside" with the people at the table behind us. They were visibly upset by one woman. The so-so: Food. Some of it is great, some of it is mediocre. My wife's Greek Platter was for the most part fantastic. and was huge. My stake, was good, but I've had much better, even at some chain restaurants. I had a soup, and it was extremely salty (maybe there was feta in it). Side note: This isn't bad, good, or anything else, it's just an observation. I would say the average age of all patrons when we went was 60-65 years. It doesn't seem like a trendy place for the young crowd. Will I go here again? Yes. Will I have steak? Probably not. This place is a true gem! It's a modern Greek twist on a classic Midwest supper club! They know how to cook meat and then they take that perfectly cooked meat and pair it with a great mixture of spices and veggies. They also have great Greek flavor mixed into their dishes. I recommend the pork tenderloin with a cilantro white cream sauce, on a bed of onions mushroom and chorizo! WOW! Great staff who knows the menu and the great wine selection! It's also got that great vibe! My wife and I finish out wine and dinner and then went to enjoy the bar a finish out the nice with a great glass of 10yr Tawny port! Exceptional food, very reasonable prices. I took away one star for the noise level, which seems usual for this place given other Yelp reviews. Not a great spot for a romantic date because of that. But the food...wow. We had the octopus and another nightly special (rock shrimp and bay scallops) for apps. The octopus is really special. Use the grilled lemon it is served with generously. We had the grilled lamb chops and NY strip with porchini truffle butter. Our of this world. Both are as good in flavor and cooking as I've had at high end steakhouses across the U.S. Get the orzo side dish (included with entrees). It's perfect. Service was also great. Ok...we have heard so many good things about Tara's that we decided to stop and check it out. My husband and I walk in and are greeted very nicely to a cute corner table by the window. The cabin atmosphere is warm and cozy and makes you feel at home. The Food: a real disappointment. I really wanted the food to be good, because it's such a fun place. I ordered the petite steak with the crab cake. That steak was by far the worst steak that I have ever had. The chef did not use any butter or oil to sear the outside of it and it was overcooked and absolutely tasteless. The crabcake tasted good, but it was about 1/4 inch thin and about 3 inches wide for $5.00 extra. My husband had the steak sandwich...which was not a sandwich....just a piece of steak with 1 piece of bread cut in half on the side of the plate...nothing else on it. The food is terrible, but the place is adorable. We will go back 1 more time and give it another chance....only 1 more! read more

This place was okay! I went with a group of 7 people (including one toddler). Out of the food I tried, the Clam Chowder was good, the Athenian potatoes were yummy, and the Orzo was good. However, I thought the duck gnocchi was way too salty and my husband thought his chicken with phyllo dough wasn't that great (too much phyllo!) The atmosphere was cute, rustic, and quaint - but if you go at dinner time be prepared for it to be super busy! Delicious! I haven't been to the Hideaway for almost 20 years. Not sure why it took me so long to get back there, but I can tell you that we'll be back often. Two words: lobster bisque. I could have eaten just a bowl of that and gone home happy. It was SO good that I shamelessly made the three others in our party eat off of my spoon. I got it with the broiled shrimp, which was also wonderful. My son-in-law said that the Tara steak was the best he's ever had. My husband loved the truffle burger and fried potatoes, and my daughter ordered the "small" gyros, which was huge. Food was great, drinks were great, service was great. We dined here on Mother's Day.....on a lark after finding it on the web. WOW.....what a lark that was. Everything we had at the table was superior. We had several different appetizers to share (3 adults, 2 kids).....my MIL finally was able to enjoy how gnocchi are supposed to be prepared and taste....THEY WERE THE BOMB! Six of us met for dinner on May 16 in celebration of birthdays. This was not my first visit, however it will be my last. Collectively, we ordered steaks, fish, shrimp and a burger. The food was fairly decent however the ambiance left a lot to be desired. There was a lack of elbow room-a person sitting behind me bumped in to me numerous times-note my BMI is less than 24. The noise level was off the charts-wait staff had to shout to be heard. Forget conversation with your dinning mates-unless you both know sign language - there will be little or no conversation. One of our dinning mates was seated near an air vent causing him to be cold. Bottomline - if you want to have dinner where the noise level exceeds OSHA standards so you can test your new hearing aids, this is the place. read more

I went on one of my first dates with Boyfriend here and I was pretty impressed by his choice. This is excellent food; that date was over a year ago and I can still remember that I had the Greek fettuccine. I can almost taste it sitting here writing this review- that's how good it was. I like the cozy atmosphere here too. They say that Dillinger hid-out there (hence its name), so it kind of has an aura bad-assery underneath the old-church-lady log cabin charm. I was pleasantly surprised by PTH. Driving up to it you do not expect what you will get inside. It is off of a major road (36) with a gravel parking lot. It is very cute inside as it is a cabin and pretty small. This is what makes it a little loud as some reviewers mentioned. Overall I was happy with the service. We had a group of 8 and only had to wait about 20 minutes at 7 PM on a Friday. The bartenders were very nice in the meantime and were able to whip us up some good cocktails. The food was good as well - I ordered the scallops and a bunch of others ordered the duck. Everyone was happy with their dishes and I would return. They were well prepared and the plates looked very professional. I would go back if I was in the area but I wouldn't necessarily take a special trip from the Twin Cities to visit just PTH. Really good food. I had the gyro sandwich and it was filling and delicious. My coworker had the Reuben which they loved. We got the spanakopita and it was tasty and crispy. The service was really slow but I think it was just our specific waitress. The other side of the restaurant seemed to be flowing very smoothly and we would have to wait ten minutes to ask a question or order something. Other than that, the place is great. Okay, it was New Year's Eve and they were busy, but give me a medium filet! Charcoal and shouldn't have been served. The server (who was wonderful) notice the awfulness and quickly ordered a new one. So when it came out it was medium, but no seasoning and it had 3 knife marks through it, checking the to make sure it was medium, drying it out completely. We stopped in on a Tuesday night for a late dinner and I was happily surprised and impressed. I didn't know what to expect but it was ridiculously cute - little log cabin in the woods. Will have to come back in the summer to eat outside. The food was really tasty. I ordered the grilled octopus appetizer - and really, living in Minnesota there were so-o many ways that could have been a terrible terrible decision. Happily it was delicious and perfectly cooked. Had a nice duck dish with gnocchi for the entree - super rich so I ended up eating just a little bit for three meals but very delicious. I have never reviewed this place before. I would have given 4 out of 5 until our recent visit there. We had 8 pm reservations, arrived at 8:02 was approx. another 5 minutes before my son was acknowledged at the hostess stand. At 8:08 he was told we were late for our reservations, they gave our table away. No apologies offered. They made no attempt to reach us to see if we were still coming. The hostess was extremely rude. Stating "we don't take reservations anyways, I don't know who answered the phone and took them."We were attempting to celebrate our anniversary and after being at a funeral most of the day we were tired, hungry and grieving. We left to spend our evening and money at another local, well-known establishment. So sad we were treated this way, it was one of our favorite places to go. NO MORE!!! read more

It was crowded and noisy, but we were there later and the crowd thinned out and I just turned down the hearing aids. Food was wonderful -- grilled octopus, steak, trout, duck and patitsio. My husband and his family all hail from Stillwater, so I think that this place as risen to a place of legend for them. As for me? I don't get it. It's pretty standard supper clubby surf and turf kind of place, except there's always a huge line and it's a tad overpriced for the messy plating and basic options. Sooooooooooooooo, this place has been great for a long time and we have gone there for a long time. The food is always great. However!!!! The service has been on the slide and the last time it was really poor. Waitress was sick, coughing on her hands while speaking to us. Gross! A number of items forgotten and had to be asked for with the meal, salad forgotten, side order forgotten, etc. Silverware removed with salads, not re-set for meal and had to be requested even though meals were sitting there getting cold. Also- the online menu is very old. The prices have been raised several times since this was posted. I wonder if this is even false advertising as it is not just a small mistake. Meal service was also very very slow even though we were eating well after the main dinner rush. I figured- OK, this is not normal but I should send an email to the GM and let him know things were a bit off and as long time customers he should know. Shockingly, not even a "thanks for the email" reply. I guess they are resting on their success and getting sloppy. The food is still good, but the value has faded as prices have risen and the service is nowhere near what it should be. With downtown Stillwater just a couple miles away booming and all the great new restaurants down there, I think Phils is now just an "option" not a destination. In town for a home visit. Service was great and food was good. However, my walleye was really wet. Good flavor but texture seemed wet and heavy as if it was either flashed in a pan after being frozen or microwaved after it was precooked. Also, there were wayyyy too many tables so close together... the servers could barely make their way around and customers struggled to sit. I seen a lady come in that was with a cane struggling to sit because of the tables so close together. You could add on to the patio area with all of that wasted space! read more

We love Phil's. But they fell short tonight. Cocktail described with white chocolate came with milk chocolate. Which wouldn't be a problem except for someone who's allergic to milk chocolate. They said they ran out of white chocolate. :( Two of five five steaks were undercooked and sent back (1 twice). To be fare, I love my steak rare.. but many do not. My daughter ate most of her meal after most of us were done and they still charged full price. Disappointing. Also we were sad that they decided to loudly prep silverware for the next day at table next to us (at 8:00 at night). Felt like we were on the back kitchen. Damper on what was otherwise a lovely night. Service from Sam was fabulous! We'll be back but hope next time is back to Phil's standards. read more

This place has been here forever. It looks like a seedy little shack on the side of the highway that you'd imagine would be a strip club or something. But it's not.
