I've heard of Philz Coffee because I have friends that live in San Francisco and they're all bragging about how good this place is. I finally checked it out and I must say it's delicious! I love coffee and I must say that Philz Coffee did not disappoint I mean from the name itself I already love it duh :-) I ordered the Philtered Soul which is a hazelnut flavored drink with chocolate and it was delicious and some chocolate croissant to add with it. The barista was nice enough to add a little bit more sweetness to it which was nice. The ambiance and the atmosphere of the place is really nice. Sometimes I like to sit at coffee shops to get some work done, I wanted to go to a different coffee shop that's not your big name coffee shops like "Starbucks" so that's one of the reasons why I have to check this place out. I already felt a nice calm feeling just by coming it has that "neighborhood" vibe. Comfortable seats and fast wifi as well. There's a ton of coffee shops in the city that I usually get my coffee runs and I must say that this is added on my favorite coffee spots in the city. Welcome to Chicago Philz Coffee! I've always been a Philz fan, and words can't describe how happy I was to see this location open. I got a chance to check it out on a Monday afternoon. I got a Mint Mojito and stuck around for a couple of hours to work. The Mint Mojito was as great as I remembered it. It is just velvety smooth, seamlessly blending a bold coffee with crisp and refreshing fresh mint leaves. The coffee also packs a punch, giving me a nice caffeine buzz to power through some work. I want to branch out and try the rest of their menu, but keep finding myself going back to this drink. Highly recommend. With the new opening, and probably because of its proximity to the DePaul campus, it was even busier and more noisy than I had anticipated. It comes with the territory being so popular, but be aware that it may take some luck to find an open seat -- nearly every space was taken by chatty students while I was there. This makes it feel bustling and vibrant, but also made it tough to concentrate at times. I will certainly be back here, but maybe with friends rather than a laptop attempting to work. read more

Tried this cafe in San Fran long ago, and here as well at their soft opening. I wasn't impressed then, and still am not now. The space and ambiance of the cafe is perfect: spacious, bright, clean. The layout and design of the space is the best offering at Philz. The coffee menu, however, is limited. They do not offer the traditional lattes or Cappuccinos, which I infinitely prefer over drip/pour over coffee. The mocha is worth passing up, as it doesn't taste anything like a true mocha. Sadly, the few drinks they offer I did not enjoy. Would only recommend if you enjoy drip or pour over coffee and appreciate a good cafe setting. read more

The girl that took my order was passively rude and got my burrito order completely wrong I ordered a sausage burrito and instead I ended up with a mound of cheese wrapped in a tortilla. My favorite drink in the entire world resides at Phil's coffee! When I learned there was a location in the city I was doing my rotation, I was beyond ecstatic! I drove out to this location, which is located in a very nice shopping strip. The staff inside is very sweet and was taking every possible precaution to follow CDC covid guidelines. They had the cutest sign inside with "Cup of Love" written, and it was the most accurate description of my drink of choice- the Mint Mojito! Philz is my favorite coffee shop in Chicago. Their coffee is unique, and all the flavors come out really well. I've had the iced mint mojito and thought the mint taste went really well with the coffee taste. I've also had an iced gingersnap and was pleasantly delighted by how closely it tasted to like a gingersnap cookie. And my favorite is the iced coffee rose. stopped by here to try them out since i heard lots of good things, and they did not disappoint. ill start with service: staff here is super friendly! i wasnt sure what to order as it was my first time and when the lady taking my order heard that, she walked me through and explained all the options and recommended me a drink as well. i got something something oatmilk cookie- i cant quite remember the name but it was their special and was really good. the place has a nice interior and a good vibe going on and there were enough seats even with the amount of people in there. just overall a good place to have a quick zoom meeting, bring your friends to, or even stop by yourself for a quick coffee run. read more

Love this new Philz location right in the heart of Lincoln Park! Was in the neighborhood the other day and decided to settle in here to get some work done. Although crowded, I was lucky enough to walk right in grab a great spot! After setting my things down I headed to the counter to begin the difficult decision of what to take! Philz menu is extensive, and at first glance, can be a bit overwhelming! So many options and descriptions. Lucky enough they have nice and knowledgeable baristas to help! I'm a creature of habit and usually just get one of their medium roast Americanos, but other notable classics are the mint mojito, which is amazing, as well as the rose latte, which is also smooth and delicious! If it's your first time trying Philz, I would definitely recommend giving either of those a try! And if you're really struggling, just consult the baristas, they will steer you in the right direction! The vibe here is bright, open, and lively! For me, I really enjoyed it and found it easy to get work done here. For some, I could see how it could be a bit distracting because it's busy and loud, but overall, I think it made an excellent spot to work! Being right near DePaul I bet this place is wild at peak times, so if you're heading here to catch up with a friend or work, I'd recommend going on an off time. First time trying Philz coffee and I can definitely see what all the hype was about. Menu is more limited than your typical Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts BUT Philz has more unique coffee options. I tried an iced MOCHA TESORA which is described as "a velvety coffee-based treat with lightly sweetened cocoa". Honestly, it was very very similar to hot coco with a small added bitterness coming from the coffee. But overall the drink was on the sweeter side. So, if you prefer stronger coffee drinks I would recommend asking if the drink can be prepared less sweet. The inside of Philz is SO cute and cozy. I'm looking forward to returning once indoor dining is open again. I can imagine this place being a GREAT study spot. read more

Admittedly, I totally missed the opening of the other locations but I went for the soft opening on Thursday and was blown away by so many things: * Gorgeous design and layout - so clean and inviting. Plenty of space to work and some seating outside (it was hella windy the day we went). Really love the color scheme - a smoky blue and cream- sets the tone for a relaxing experience. Gender neutral bathrooms and the hand washing area is communal. * Super friendly baristas- This is unsurprising as all the Philz locations that I've gone to in the Bay area has engaging baristas that genuinely seem happy to make you one helluva delicious coffee. You can speak with them while they make your coffee and they're willing to make any adjustments after they hand it over to you * Food - they were handing out samples of the almond butter & strawberry jam on sourdough (seriously - what kind of jam was this because it had big chunks of strawberry and was so yummy - if you sell it, I want to know) , avocado toast - some plain and others with thin slices of hard boiled eggs and the lightest sprinkling of sea salt and pepper - omg, delish * Staff - super nice! (and cute) My friend brought her 7 month old puppy with us, and honestly, it was all sorts of a crazy morning with her knocking over the outside table trying to get a taste of the avocado toast, which sent my mint mojito flying onto the sidewalk (crying about it), using I don't know how many napkins to clean up the mess (very sorry about that). Patrons and staff were friendly and came by to pet her (she absolutely loved it) - and one staff worked his magic and totally calmed her down by whistling - not just an ordinary whistle - hard to describe but it had like a slight buzzing sound to it - like an Australian didgeridoo -in any case, amazing dog whisperer. Thank you. Finally - when we both had a chance to sit down - sheer bliss. Now, the last time I had a mint mojito was two years ago in SF when I went to visit my brother. I walked to the Philz from his place the same day I landed, then got me another the next day, and another near the Ferry Building - essentially I got addicted to the mint mojito and had to satiate my fix daily. Sweet and creamy is the way to go. It's a good thing they were handing out samples of other things - the gingersnap and rose were pretty tasty, but perhaps because I'm a bit a creature of habit, I feel like I've found my go-to. I'm giving this an average review for its potential but I really didn't love the coffee I got. I want to love Philz because I know people love it & the menu makes me see that there's a lot of thought put into the quality of coffee & fun bevs but I've been twice now and haven't been wowed by my order. I've tried an iced almond milk latte from a location in sf & tried a dirty chai latte from this one & had a sip of an iced drink my friend got. The dirty chai latte tasted like just watered down chai & they asked me if I wanted any milk when I ordered but isn't that what latte means?? I couldn't taste the espresso at all & I maybe drank like 1/6 of it. The environment is cute & it's be a great work spot so I think I'll give it one more shot before determining a final rating. read more

Better than Starbucks. There, I said it. Come at me, bro. There's no fluff here at Philz, no whipped cream or syrupy nonsense. It's coffee, light, medium, or dark roast, to which you can add cream/milks, and sugar or a sugar substitute of some sort. Get it hot or iced, but it's dead simple to order, and they taste fantastic. They also serve teas here, but I haven't tried any of those yet. The only reason I'm giving this place 4 stars and not 5 is because the green chili burrito I had, well, it sucked. It was 70% tortilla, 25% melted, goopy, yucky cheese, and 5% mystery food that may have been potato. I dunno. All I know is I regret buying it. Stick to the coffee here, and you won't be disappointed. They also have an app that is so easy to use, it should be criminal to walk up to the counter and order in person. read more

Still can't get over how you just go up to a barista tell them your order and then they call your name 5 minutes later or so with it ready. No looking at a receipt with the order on it, no writing it down, what if you give them 5 orders? Doesn't matter, they will have all 5 ready soon enough. I've had every medium blends coffee here, they are all really good. Tesora is probably my favorite one. This is my first visit to a Chicago Philz and I'm happy to say the quality is the same as in SF. I tried the iced coffee rosé without any modifications. It was delicious, creamy, just sweet enough, with a subtle rose flavor. The place was super busy around noon on a Saturday with lots of students (DePaul gets a 10% discount in fact). I ordered the mint mojito and was pleasantly surprised. It was refreshing but also creamy and sweet but not over the top. I did end up having to take out some of the mint leaves because the mint flavor began to be a bit too strong for me. That being said it didn't really bother me to do that and I will probably still order the same drink again! Loved it. HOW am I just trying Philz?? After driving by many times, I was finally determined to stop in after seeing a TikTok about the Philz difference. And dang did it deliver! I was a little nervous/intimidated by the different blends, but ended up going with a Hot Philtered Soul plus a light splash of oat milk. The coffee is brewed, one cup at a time, right in front of you! And once it's ready, the barista makes sure you like it before you leave. The hazelnut, chocolate taste really shined, and the oat milk was the perfect creamy touch. All coffee lovers will enjoy this place. read more

Philtered soul cold brew with oat milk: This is a well balanced cold drink. It is just strong enough to preserve the flavor of the beans in an elegant way. The beans are well toasted and roasted. They taste like gold. The hazelnut flavor is not too loud as I find it can be in other coffee blends, and it compliments the medium bean quite delicately. I would not consider this a full bodied drink, although I do not think that is a bad thing; this coffee is refreshing and slightly airy but still grounded. It's like a puppy with a balloon tied on it's tail that's almost floating but his front paws are still in contact with the ground. So cute! Finally, I really appreciate that this coffee mixed well with the oat milk in flavor and physical blending. read more

Not to long ago I started working next door to this place. I had no idea where to go for lunch and wanted something small. Upon entering I got greeted by the most amazing staff! Super happy and helpful. I got a regular coffee and a almond croissant OMG!!!!!!! THAT WAS THE BEST ALMOND CROISSANT I HAVE EVER HAD (addicted seriously I have one every day... HELP ME) I have been going there ever since. The coffee is delicious and strong enough to help me fight the urge of knocking out at my desk. The staff tho.... honestly... they are what make this place so great. They are all amazing, kind, and make you feel at home they definitely go above and beyond to make customers day. I cannot say enough about this place except try it! No matter what kind of day you are having, entering this jem will make it better! Okay, I understand that Philz is becoming slightly chainy, rooting from SF and slowly spreading across the country. But honestly, I don't' care. I LOVE Philz! My bf took me to the very first location in the Mission District(?) and I just fell in love with the mint mojito. Prior to moving to Chicago, I found out that Philz was opening several locations and I was thrilled that they were opening one in Lincoln Park! I love the location, space, and workers. The employees honestly give great customer service! And sadly, that's sometimes hard to find at a coffee shop. I've tried most of their specialty drinks, the rosé, mint mojito, tesora, philtered soul, jacobs wonderbar...etc...everything tastes great! You can customize the drinks and make it philz way, it can get sweet sometimes, so make sure you speak to your barista. The baristas are also open to giving recommendations if you're unsure of what you want, so don't be afraid to ask questions if you have any.
