Very burnt tasting when I'm not even sure a pour over can burn! It was filled so high that it made it impossible to get to the table without burning. The napkins are rationed! Put a napkin thingy out and we can clean our own table! Very loud. I love Philz!! I got a mint mojito (I ate the mint off the top before taking the picture) and it was great. It's a really nice refreshing drink. I stayed at the cafe for around 2 hours to do work, it's a nice study spot with a lot of windows letting in sunlight. The staff was really kind and helpful! read more

Philz is a coffee chain known for their blend and unique flavors. This Philz just opened up in Claremont, and they had their soft opening last week. They gave away a free drink and pastry that day! The staff were very nice and patient. It was my first time there, and they let me taste my coffee to make sure I liked it at the bar. The ambiance inside is cute for catching up with one friend or for people watching by yourself. It can definitely get crowded because it's close to KGI's campus, but it's a nice addition to the coffee scene. The iced mint mojito tasted refreshing and had a very strong mint flavor. A huge fan of Philz so was super excited to see one open in Claremont! Parking in front of the coffee shop is very limited but found parking a street down (weekday lunch time). The inside is spacious with a good amount of seating but everything was taken up when I was there. Service was friendly and the drink took ~10 minutes to come out. I usually get the mint mojito with oat milk but decided to try the philtered soul - house way with oat milk instead. In my opinion, I thought the house way (creamy and sweet) was delicious but way too sweet (next time I would get it creamy but lite sweet). Have been coming here since it opened hoping the quality would change eventually. Sometimes the drinks are not done in time even though the app says they are ready for pick-up. They've also had an issue with their cups and lids which always seem to leak coffee (and get everywhere on your clothes especially when you're trying to drink it). Lids aren't secure (as shown by all the droplets on the counters) and disappointed that this hasn't been fixed as it is a pretty simple problem. The cups also have coffee/honey/syrup dripping down the sides as well which leaves my hands sticky as soon as I grab the drinks. It seems like the workers are aware of the issue but all they can offer is an extra empty cup and napkins which don't stop the spills. read more

This place is an absolute delight for coffee purists and connoisseurs. They handcraft each cup of coffee, even a regular drip coffee, because it is prepared using the pour over method. When it's ready, the barista calls you over and asks you to take a sip to make sure they got it right and you are pleased with your cup. So be prepared to wait and don't complain about a line as it takes time to achieve the desired cup of deliciousness. (Don't have time? They do have a mobile app if you want to order ahead.) During my visit, I was a bit overwhelmed with the menu as it was laid out in detailed steps along with photos and descriptions of each coffee. However, the very nice gentleman at the counter walked me through it. Pick hot or cold, the size, the name of the drink/coffee, the creamer, and the sweetener. They have almost every type of creamer and sweetener you can imagine. All the coffees are blends and range from light to dark blends. And they have inviting and wonderful names like Winter Bliss, Silken Splendor, and Philtered Soul. Each coffee has its tasting notes right on the menu. Reading this part of the menu is quite enjoyable for the senses, and I would suggest going to Philz' website and doing that before your visit. That way you'll have your homework done, know what to order when you arrive, and avoid the deer in the lights moment I first had when I got to the counter. I chose the Philtered Soul straight up as it has my favorite coffee flavor- hazelnut. It was caffeinated hazelnut perfection in a cup! When the barista had me take that first sip, I heard a heavenly choir! And it really gave me busy bee energy that day. I accomplished more daily tasks than I had originally planned! I almost questioned the legality of it all. They also have quick foods--delicious pastries and burritos. I had a green chili burrito. It was microwaveable ok, but not gourmet. Stick with the pastries and fantastic coffee. Life is too short to drink bad coffee, so come to Philz! read more

This place has great options and a super warm cozy environment. When I went they were popping and there was a decent sized line that went by decently fast. The coffee I ordered was the Honey Haze. I got it iced and as it comes. The reason I didn't give this place five stars is simply because my drink tasted terrible the first time I tried it. It was very milky with little to no coffee toast and the honey flavor was non existent. However! And this is a big however! I brought it up to one of the workers who was very nice she was blond and had her hair up looked like a shift lead. She immediately fixed my drink on the spot and it was absolutely delicious. As for the other workers I would say the service was okay. Some were clearly stressed and tired. She was probably tired too but had excellent customer service. Coffee here is always great! And I love that you can customize your sweetness level, as well as offering decaf options. However I will say this location gets very busy, so be prepared to wait a bit for your beverage! However I've always had a positive experience, and the employees are always so nice! My order had gotten lost in the plethora of drinks that they were being made and one of the baristas kindly made mine for me after I had waited a while, he handed it to me personally and apologized for the inconvenience. This was my third time going here and I am trying the different cold brew flavors. So far the hazelnut one is my favorite. I'm not sure how their queue works because my one drink came out after the couple who placed their order after me. I'm so happy that there's a Philz in nearby Claremont now! It's still new, but it was slammed with business the whole time I worked there! You could almost feel the jealousy of the Starbucks a block away! If you haven't been to a Philz, it's a different approach. Mostly they serve their unique flavored concoctions such as "Ether" and "Tantalizing Turkish". For a plain cup of coffee, I think "Jacob's Wunderbar" is the closest. I have to comment on the bathroom installed at this location. Locking the door is a completely different technology experience; although who knows, maybe it will become the norm some day. Instead of simply latching the door the normal way, turning the mechanical label on the outside from green to red, there is a electronic button press and lighted display ritual to follow, alien enough to require a three-step instructions sign taped to the door. Following the instructions, I opened the unlocked door to an embarrassed girl on the toilet! I complained to the person at the counter who said, "it means that she didn't lock the door." read more

Usually, I love Philz coffee. I was very excited when a Claremont location was put in, and the drinks are always made well here. However in coming multiple times to try and give this location a fair chance, I have waited more than 30 minutes for a 3 drink mobile order each time. No other location do I have to wait that long. Pretty disappointing, and when I asked about it to the barista after seeing multiple people who had ordered in line get their drinks before me, she was quite snappy and rude. Barista with glasses and dark hair - Service was horrible. My boyfriend and I were just there and our order was messed up. This is no big deal, but when we let the barista know, she seemed mad already. So he offered to keep the messed up coffee, but she bluntly said she already threw it away. came in to pick up my mobile order that was set to be completed five minutes from when I arrived. my two food items were already on the counter while my drink was still being made, so they were cold. that's fine, I understand they have to maintain their count for baked items when they're taking in person and online orders. I get my drink (which was great!) and head to my car to leave. My plain bagel was, as mentioned above, cold which I can deal with (but do not prefer). But in addition to that it had no cream cheese with it or a knife, both of which are supposed to be included. Fine, I need to go so I guess I'll just eat it dry. My blueberry muffin was, in fact, not a blueberry muffin at all, but instead a cinnamon muffin covered in pecans which I am incredibly allergic to. Of course there's no way for them to be aware of my allergy, but you must be aware of what item I ordered as the it is literally stickered onto the bag. Overall the quality control seems completely off and they are in need of an expo system of some sort to help them out because they are very busy. Hire more people. read more

Family members introduced us to Philz coffee by bringing us a bag of Philz ground "Ambrosia"coffee. Many of us agreed it is a really great blend. Service at Philz Claremont is spot on! There is inside seating with electronic charging ports, and there is also outside seating. They do their best to make your coffee exactly how you want it. Their various coffee drink options are delicious. The only con for us ordering hot coffees with various milks, is that they are unable to make your coffee hot enough. You literally have to have it black in order to get a hot coffee. A few of those in our large family who have had the cold coffee drinks really liked them. Husband has had the green chili burrito twice and really enjoyed it. Overall a positive experience, but would go around the corner to Starbucks when wanting a hot latte beverage. read more
