I ordered the Small Iced Mint Mojito (~$5). You NEED to get it The House Way. That basically means they add "creamy cream" and "sweet sugar". It is a MUST! The drink was a beautiful blend of sweet mint and bitter coffee. It was super creamy which I loved! I do think they put too much ice, so I recommend asking for light ice. I was heading back to the Bay Area on a road trip and decided to stop by Philz for some coffee. Philz is one of my go to coffee spots in the Bay Area, so I was excited to check out the Davis location. The inside is quite spacious and there is lots of seating both on the couch and at the tables. The Christmas decorations made it feel extra festive and cozy. I ordered the Philtered Soul which was creamy and not too sweet. The coffee flavor was quite strong too. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I have been such a big fan of Philz ever since I can remember. From the Mocha Tesora to the Greater Alarm, there is just so many different drinks that I love from here. I usually will stick to one drink when I go to coffee shops, however, I don't mind too much mixing it up here. My top three drinks here: 1. Philtered Soul 2. Cold Brew w/ Oatmilk 3. Mocha Tesora I will usually got for the Philtered Soul and as for it Philz way (sweet and creamy). I also want to shout out their bacon & onion croissant. Philz coffee is my top favorite. I will travel just to buy Philz! If I'm in the city and I see a Philz nearby, I always get my favorite, Iced Mint Mojito! Sweet, Creamy, Minty. When you go inside, you order one of their Featured Creations, my other fav is the Ecstatic Iced Coffee- Caramel, Dried Apricot, Dark Chocolate flavor. You tell them how much sweetness and creamy you want it. When the barista makes it you taste it in front of them and they ask if it tastes right. (Which is the best part- your own personal barista!) The Philz coffee place in Davis is the closest to where I live so it's a must! Parking is street parking, and they close at 6pm. My first time at Philz! The ordering/waiting area was a little bit confusing, but the baristas were super kind in explaining their philosophy and what drinks they recommended. I tried the honey haze and it had that signature creamy top with really amazing honey flavor. It was a lot sweeter than I was expecting though, but I did find out later that you can adjust the sweetness level for the drinks. Came here a couple times already and the service is always quick and all the workers are really nice. I have tried so far philtered soul (10/10) and the iced coffee rose (10/10) both are delicious with very unique flavors. Philtered soul has a very good nutty after taste, it's subtle but delicious. Iced coffee rose had a nice floral taste that goes really well with the coffee, reminds me of another rose coffee drink I've had back in socal. Philz is always hit or miss for me depending on which barista makes my drink. I used to go here all the time and found the drinks to be more watered down than other Philz I've tried. I went again recently after 3 years and it was pretty good! Philz does the job in getting you caffeinated but the taste changes each time. I wish it was more uniform across the board. This might be because I prefer espresso based drinks over pour over drinks which is what Philz specializes in. I've only been here once before so I don't know the menu well. I had a super nice and helpful barista who recommended the Philtered Soul coffee with cream to me. It was very good and exactly what I wanted. It was creamy and smooth but strong. This drink is a coffee that has a slight hazelnut flavor to it. It's nice and relatively subtle. Hit the spot on this 55F afternoon! It was really well set up for the pandemic with tables set up by first name in alphabetical order (I should've taken photos, next time I'll update this post). E.g. A-D, E-H, etc. They call out your order under the name you give them and place it at the table. There is a plastic guard at the ordering window and an easy to use square type card reader and iPad. I don't know if they're a cash free establishment. They have you wait outside until they call your name. The line is set up with good spacing as well. It seemed well designed for this pandemic. I waited maybe 3-4 minutes for my drink. It was pretty fast, and there were about 8 people in various group configurations ahead of me that got their drinks right around the same moment as I did. So it was not more than 6 minutes for all of us. The Philz locations near me are certainly not this charming. As temperatures go up, iced coffee is one of my top beverages to stay cool and beat the summer heat. They have a couple of unique varieties that I tend to cycle through. Mint Mojito is a crowd favorite, it's sweet and creamy. Iced Gingersnap is a flavorful concoction of cinnamon, nutmeg, and spices. For hot coffee, I've only had Dancing Water - a lighter blend that has nuttiness due to the almonds and sweetness from the hints of chocolate. The acidity was a little too much for my liking. Where they really shine is the food menu honestly. Mediterranean Avocado & Egg Toast is one of the best I've ever had. The sourdough is nicely toasted, the avocado spread is generous, and the sprinkles of herbs and eggs are nice additions to an already solid treat. For something sweet, Almond Butter & Jam Toast does not disappoint. Not everything turns out well, their Turkey Sandwich tastes like an overpriced McMuffin. Overall though, Philz has a great selection of hot breakfast items and baked goods. They do things a little weird here. Patrons walk up to the counter and order their drinks from the baristas. Then, you walk to the register, tell the cashier what you ordered, any food items you would like to add, and pay there. Finally, you wait until the barista calls out your order. Welcome to Davis, Philz!!! I no longer have to travel to San Francisco for the best coffee of my entire life. Don't compare this to Starbucks or Peet's. It's it's own thing. It's a pour over place. You can't get your grande half caf virgin soy mocha latte with whip here. What you CAN get is a fantastic pour over... And a great selection, made by a knowledge barista. They also make a great avocado toast. It's a must have! It may not be as fast as Starbucks but I understand they have a mobile app now so that might be helpful for some people. The hype: there is a lot of it out there. First, it opened a week ago. Not quite a grand opening anymore. Secondly, Davis needs more places to purchase $4+ cups of coffee. Really? I should stop with that. "Should" not "will." So I went in looking to get a drink to share and saw arrows drawn on the ground to the "barista bar" or whatever it is you want to call it. There, a young woman took my order and began making it. You'd think that the next order of business would be to pay for it. It sorta is, but not from where you order your cup of brew. I was told to mosey on down to the next counter where I saw food...not where you pay. Continue your voyage to the another wall of the establishment where you find trendy iPad-ish registers. Tell them what sort of drink you've ordered and pay. Oh ya, that drink for which you just threw down a number of dollars....it's back where you ordered it. Also, hope you didn't forget to pay for the food you chose! The layout of this place is not meant for speed. The barista was reasonably courteous and offered to adjust my drink once I'd tasted it. Mainly, her concern was the level of sweetness of my drink- I'd ordered a "creamy" (Tesora) mocha with no sweetener. Quite refreshing to have a "mocha" drink that didn't make me want to brush my teeth after consumption! Bottom line for me is that it was okay. Nothing to jump and and down about- a seemingly customized drink order. And it's Downtown Davis- parking is going to blow more often than not unless it's summer or break time. I was naturally on my way to get boba at T4 to feed my boba addiction, and as I was crossing the street, I had done a double take when I saw the Philz sign! I couldn't believe my eyes! Finally my favorite coffee made its way up to Davis! If only it were here when I was a student... but then it could have gotten really bad, either 1) they would have to drag me out since I'm so addicted to the coffee or 2) I'd go broke spending my college fund on this gem. Anyways, I finally made it in and I couldn't believe how extravagant it is! Super big space! Great for studying! I've been to pretty much all the Philz in the bay and Sac, this one seems by far the biggest and less crowded so far....I foresee it getting busier overtime ... I did find out that this is one of the first locations that has their food bar out in front. I never knew they sold food (besides the bakery) until this location. Definitely a good idea to market their food items, because I would have never known. What I tried: 1) Mediterranean avocado toast -I love avocado toast and this one felt very healthy! I usually like my eggs runny, but hard boil wasn't too bad. The olive oil and seasoning was a great top off. 2) Mint mojito - EXTRA SWEET and CREAMY - with light ice of course (to get your moneys worth) -made to perfection, the barista did a great job making my drink -my go to drink! -you don't have to get it extra sweet and creamy like I did, but I just have a big sweet tooth, and knowing that caffeine doesn't work for me, I'm banking on the sugary high to keep me awake Other recommendations to try: 3) mocha tesora (iced coffee) - I've tried this at other places, and this is my 2nd go to, at first I wasn't sure how I would feel about the dark chocolate, but they can make it sweet. 4) ecstatic (iced coffee) -honestly every time I have this drink, it almost taste like the mojito (depending on who makes it), so if your on a budget and wanna save some $ and get a similar mint mojito taste (just not as minty), go for this drink! This Philz makes quality coffee. I always either get the mint mojito or the iced coffee rose. I haven't had a poor made drink here so it's my go-to coffee shop in Davis over Starbucks and Peet's. My only qualm about this coffee shop is that there's always a long line that moves pretty slow but the baristas are pretty good at managing the orders. On our way back home to the bay, my friend and I decided to make a pit stop at Philz to get our caffeine fix. This location is spacious and can meet different needs whether that's room to study or space to catch up with friends. The line was long but moved pretty quickly, we got mint mojitos(of course) and avocado toast. The cashier was very chatty and even came up to us while we were eating at our table to see how we were enjoying our food which was nice and something I've never experienced at a coffee shop before. This coffee establishment is definitely a popular place to go as they serve up carefully crafted individual cups of coffee and some unique eats as well. I know Philz is most known for their mint mojito coffee drink. They use real mint and the drink is nice and mild. It's creamy and something to savor and enjoy. I really do like this drink and I think it's something to try if you haven't already. There is a wide selection of different coffees on the menu and they are organized from mildest to strongest. I personally find Philz coffee on the stronger side so I tend to go for the more mild varieties. If you're not into coffee you can also order hot chocolate and various type of tea. Like I said earlier, Philz prides itself on each cup of coffee being individually crafted for the person who orders it. Getting a cup does take a little longer than the average coffee place, but it's nice to know that there is care that goes into the cup. The food items at Philz look intriguing, but the portions look small in comparison to the price so I stayed away. Philz is definitely going to be a major player in the coffee establishments in Davis. This is one of my favorite coffee places in Davis! Everyone is always so kind and they are very accommodating. I cant drink caffeine and they are always ready to list their decaf options to me. This is a great spot to study and they have sooo much seating. I've never had a problem finding a chair. I like to order their fancier drinks. So far I've had their philharmonic, Mocha Tesora, mint mojito, tesora, Philtered Soul, and their Iced coffee Rosé. All are delicious and fit my different moods. Their Mint Mojito is my go to.
