This Philz is huge! There are plenty of long tables for people to work at and smaller tables for coffee chats. I love the eclectic wooden (slightly rustic) tables and the colorfully mismatched chairs. Philz has a mug wall so regular customers can leave their mugs here. Very environmentally friendly! The servers are very knowledgeable about the various drinks. If you've gone to Philz before, you know how unique their drinks are. I love to look at the menu and see what ingredients go into their coffees. They have anything from blackberry and grapefruit to grains and "tobacco" in their drinks. [ Mint Mojito ] This is my go-to drink because it is always reliably delicious. The drink is silky and sweet. The coffee flavor is nicely masked by the cream and sugar. True to its name, the drink has a minty undertone. [ Iced Coffee Rosé ] I first learned about this drink through an Instagram ad! When we removed the lid from the drink, there was a glob of pink coloring floating in the middle of the drink. I was confused since I expected the entire drink to be pink as shown in the ads! What was more disappointing was that I couldn't taste the rosé flavoring at all. It wasn't a bad drink. In fact it was a nice and refreshingly light coffee. It just didn't live up to my expectations for a "Rosé" coffee. read more

I've never had a coffee shop with such great service. It was my first time here and the barista took the time to explain their menu to me and welcome me to Philz! I love that they want you to taste your drink before you leave the pick up counter "because we want you to leave with a drink you love" said the barista. And if there is anything you don't like about it they are willing to do any changes to it for you. Wow that is service! They aren't just trying to rush you in and out. One of the worst managed, staff employed shops in Davis. It can take extensive time to get a cup of coffee even with one or two patrons waiting. It's consistent on being deader than a door nail in the morning, as customers shift to Peet's or Starbucks so they're not running late for work or school. Super popular place so expect long lines. As each coffee beverage is a poured over drip and then whitened and sweetened behind the counter there is a wait of a few minutes before you are tasting and waking up to your hot beverage. I had a lot of questions which were answered fully. The coffee blends are described by their flavor notes, not additives except for the cardamon and one infused with something (maybe one with hazelnut?) Our order was taken and we were told we'd be called up when the coffee was ready. Our names weren't taken so I was wondering how that would work but the barista motioned to us when our order was ready. He asked us to taste our coffees to make sure they were sweet enough. Then on to another line to order pastries and pay for our drinks. We lucked out and were able to find a place to sit and enjoy our coffee and pastries. I was really excited to try this place. I literally walked out without ordering anything. After about 15 minutes of standing in line, I didn't even order. I wasn't in a rush. I wasn't impatient. I waited in a long line and then left because of this one thing: the pricing. They have their prices clearly labeled per size. But based on the drink it's an additional dollar if you don't get a basic coffee. Seems deceptive and wrong. Long lines. Not nearly as many employees needed to accommodate. Love the coffee and the flavor, but they are always understaffed (perhaps intentionally in an attempt to save labor costs). I think the baristas work hard but are simply spread too thin -- it's not their fault. There were 2 employees on the floor at 10:30am with a full café, and there was 1 employee on the floor when I came in at 2pm. In both cases it took just about ten minutes to be helped after being first in line (and additional 5-10 for the drink). I don't mind waiting for good coffee, but Peet's down the street and Temple both have better service. No customer wants to feel ignored. I worked at Starbucks, and so I understand that long wait times can happen sometimes, but a simple hello can help placate the customer. I ordered and expected to wait like 10 min max because the Sacramento location is quick. After I ordered, I waited and waited and waited for my drink. It took them 30+ minutes to make my 2 drinks. Another great branch, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our coffee break on one of the patio tables outside with our pup. This is one of the larger locations with loads of varied seating inside to relax/study/etc. My Aromatic Arabic was nicely done and the usual baked goods, toasts and the like were all available as well. This was my first time at Philz and I didn't know that they didn't make the usual latte or mocha drinks. This location is very popular with the students and the place was packed. I ordered the Silken Splendor and hubby ordered the Tesoro. They ground the coffee fresh and pour hot water over the grounds. We asked for a little cream and sugar which was perfect. While the coffee was being made we stood in line to order a pastry. I got the chocolate croissant and hubby got the blueberry muffin. The coffee was perfect. I realized I like having regular coffee without all of the frills. I am a new fan of Philz. Everyone was very helpful since we didn't know how things work. read more

My boyfriend and I were with a couple of friends on the way out of town and wanted to grab coffee for the drive. Philz was on the way, so we swung by Davis to check out this Philz location. Parking was surprisingly easy for a beautiful Saturday afternoon; we were able to find a spot right outside! When we walked in, I was surprised by the size of the location. It was bright and welcome, and I could understand why so many students were hanging out and studying at the various tables. We only had to wait a few minutes before we were called up to the counter to place our order. I got my tried and true (mint mojito) and so did our friend. My boyfriend opted for an iced mocha tesora with almond milk. While we were waiting for our drinks to be made, I marveled at the "mug wall" that they have here, which offers the option of bringing in your own mug, leaving it in the dish bin to be washed, and then having it placed on the mug wall/shelves for you to use again when you visit! I absolutely LOVE this and wish they had it everywhere. If you didn't already know, Philz charges the price of a Small drink when you bring your own mug and will fill it up to 24 oz. Better for your wallet and Better for the environment! Our drinks were delicious and the barista who made them was terrific. The only thing I noticed was that all the ice in my mint mojito melted after only a few minutes, despite being in a Yeti. Not sure if there just wasn't as much ice or the drink was warmer? My first and only visit to Philz was odd, overpriced and olfactory. Working backward through the above - it smelled nice when I walked in and the yummy coffee notes were enticing. The coffee I ultimately wound up with was about 6 bucks. Ouch. And the odd? I walked up to the counter and stood there looking for the menu. An employee who was busily doing something or other greeted me and asked what I would like. I was still trying to find a menu and since I still hadn't I said: "Well I generally order a mocha." I was then asked what kind off coffees I like, what kind of chocolate, how sweet, what kind of flavor profile I enjoyed with...I don't even remember. There were other questions...consistency of my preferred meatloaf, favorite memory about my mother, fastest I've ever ridden a bicycle...I don't remember them all. Then the employee pronounced that they would make my drink. About 5 minutes later I was handed something in a cup and told that "I'm going to call this a James Henry Mocha" or something bizarre like that and charger about 6 bucks. The coffee tasted vaguely of chocolate and vaguely of coffee and I didn't have any more time for a reinterpretation of my tea leaves and palm to arrive at a better cup of coffee so I left with the cup and a feeling of "what the fuck just happened." Fast forward several months and my daughters had spent a night in Davis. Love love love this place! Right when you walk in, you at greeted with a warm breeze and ambient light. I also love that there are so many windows do natural light! There are plenty of seats to study in, but it does get busy pretty quickly so claim your spot early! What I love about this place: - Cup Wall: choose a cup you like, order a drink, and they'll put it in that cup for you. When you're finished, put the cup back and they will wash it and put it back on the wall for others to use! I purchased a beverage at Philz's coffee located in Davis, CA around 12:40PM on 7/12/22. The baristas served everyone ahead of me and after me. I left without getting my drink. I feel discriminated against because I have a very dark skin color; some people say I look black. Regardless, I wasn't served. I was skipped. I think the cameras will reveal the discrimination. It was a very horrible feeling and I want this company to know consumer discrimination is wrong. I didn't do anything but present myself to their establishment. Staff was just laughing and carrying on even when I asked after waiting so long, I asked politely as I was now late for my job interview and they still served others after my purchase! I left very upset. If this company cares or wants to show they are worthy, they ought to save the camera footage for this day to prove otherwise. A very lively place with good music and good coffee. A lot of the UC DAVIS students like to come here to study. The staff are very nice. I have only tried the Philtered Soul -sweet and creamy. It's been my favorite coffee to get because it's the perfect balance of sweet with that bitter coffee taste. The lines tend to be kind of long though just because it's a popular spot. My first time at Philz since it opened up in Davis! I'll be honest, I've wanted to try out Philz since before they opened up locally, because they already had a pretty big reputation in the Bay Area. Needless to say, that made my expectations pretty high when going in. And the Philz Coffee did an excellent job at meeting and exceeding those expectations of mine! First off - the ambience is great. Lots of cool art, plenty of opportunities for some great photo taking (I could've done that for quite a while if it wasn't so busy), ample (and comfortable!) seating, and friendly baristas working. What more could you ask for from a coffee shop in a college town? I don't quite remember the name of the drink I got - each one on their menu has a specific name, which is fun when you arrive and order, though I guess makes it difficult to recall after the fact. Luckily for me, it was one of the only "iced" drinks on the menu, so finding it again next time will be easy. That said, it was nutty, rich, and overall great without any extra additions. And definitely what I needed to get some work done on an otherwise hot day! The whole staff was friendly and personable, which is always a plus. Big thanks to Kelly for making my drink for me! Philz is the truth. Period. The mocha tesora with oat milk was one of the best coffees I've ever had. The Philz bagel (everything variety), was tasty, warm, the perfect density with fresh tomato and cucumber. Order this and you'll be happy on the inside. There are plenty of seats indoors with power outlets for your laptop, and a comfy couch with games (if you can snag a spot) for just chilling out. The shades outdoor tables are nice for a quiet morning spot to chat with your love or your friends. As a matter of fact, we liked Philz so much, we came back the next day. I've been to this Philz about 3 times and I simply don't think it can compare to the taste and customer service at other Philz in the Bay area. If you haven't been to a Philz before you want to try something different than I recommend going here. If you have been to another Philz I would not recommend this location. The first time I went I thought the mint mojito tasted off because they were very new. The last time I went my mint mojito tasted like burnt coffee...like as if someone didn't clean the equipment well and it had a lot of residual from other brews. Also, the service was really young and we're mostly talking amongst themselves. At Philz, when I receive my order I'm used to getting asked to take a sip to see if the drink is satisfactory. I came to get my drink from the barista and said thank you and she automatically ignores me and turns around and starts talking go her coworkers and laughing. This would not be acceptable at the other locations eg San Mateo or San Jose. read more

Despite having a fairly new Philz in Sac I hadn't the chance to try this unique coffee until now. My advanced education has brought me to Davis regularly lately (no...not a UCD student...maybe someday?!) and during my hour lunch break I found myself sick of Starbucks and Temple and in search of something different to pick me up out of my 1:30pm slump. Walking in as a newbie was a bit confusing- two lines? Order here and pay there and then go back to pick it up? I guess I ignored the signs when walking in as I was enamored with the coffee selection. I went for a the signature mojito coffee and was not disappointed. It was the perfect pick me up, though next time I will go for just regular house blend and save the mint for another time. Caution, 2 things: 1. There will be mint leafs in your coffee. It might seem obvious but you'd be surprised. 2. It took about 6-10 minutes to get my order in and receive my coffee. This is not an in and out sort of place but I also credit a minute to my confusion on how to order. Take that into consideration if you too are a newbie. read more

It's your typical Philz coffee. No real lattes offered because they're too cool here to put frothy milk into things. Coffee is brewed well and it's a good place to study, if you are able to grab a spot. It gets very busy here when UC Davis is in session so good luck! Service is quick. I tried Philz for the first time ever this past weekend. I got a large of the Philz Iced Tea - it was one of the best iced teas I've ever had! It is a black tea sweetened with brown sugar with mint muddled in. It was so refreshing, especially on a 100+ degree day. The downside is that it was $4.50 for a 16 oz. cup (think of a grande from Starbucks)...pretty steep. The staff was super nice. Since it was my first visit, the person behind the counter walked me through the menu and helped me select my drink. In terms of the interior, there's plenty of space with lots of tables and chairs. Like many businesses during and post Covid, they prioritize to go/pick up orders over dine-in customers. Last week I waited about 15 minutes just to get beans. Four people on duty, two of them just giggling and chatting. One was apparently making dine in orders (allegedly) and the other prioritizing to go orders. I watched many people come and go with drinks, while I still waited for my beans. I had to ask twice. They had forgotten about me. Twice. One of the employees took gloved hands, started messing around with the trash can with the same gloved hands. Then started replacing the paper filters in the coffee machines. Then continued making drinks. Same gloves touching the rims of the trashcan. Never changed them. Never washed their hands. This place is a disaster. Why am I complaining on yelp instead of to the manager? There didn't appear to be a manager. Completely run by kids. So I guess I'll take to the Internet to provide feedback. The previous time I was here a drugged out man was ranting and raving over the counter, where drinks for being made, snot and mucus hanging from his nose and beard. Don't get me wrong I like Philz, it's not high brow coffee, but they serve a decent cup of joe. What's frustrating is that, people who aren't even customers are taking up space and using wi-fi, and no one wants to say anything about it. I'm a customer I don't want to deal with confrontation, but this place is crowded and busy, and these girls are sponging on the wi-fi. I love Philz coffee but this location is absolutely terrible, EVERY-TIME, not joking every single time I come here I'm disappointed and it's quite frustrating because I hate to ask the barista to remake my coffee. Absolutely lovely new addition to the downtown coffee scene! From their cute, trendy furniture to the large interior of their cafe, this place has definitely made a name for itself in a town that's been starving for something new to take over this empty property. Their ordering system is a little funky. You stand in line to order your drink, you can order food at another counter, and then you finally pay at a third counter. I received all of my items before I paid, which the cashier said was the right thing to do, but the signage seemed to indicate otherwise. It seems that they do things on the "honor system" overall. You can go pay for your items, even if you don't have them yet. Apparently sometimes people forget to pay and come back later to make up for it, the cashier told me. They have a lovely selection of breakfast bagel sandwiches and avocado toast, not to mention a great array of pastries. I got the Blueberry Creme Fraiche Muffin on the recommendation of the employee behind the counter. She warmed it up for me and it was phenomenal: moist, full of actual blueberries, and boasting a tender crumb. I noticed some of the avocado toast of my neighbors nearby came with hard boiled eggs on top; I'll have to try that next! Unless the tempting bear claw on display calls my name first... For coffee, they are experts in pour overs and that's how they make their main drinks. I asked for 2/3 decaf and the barista, who was both respectful and friendly, said he could do half-caff with just a little more decaf. I chose the light Ethiopia decaf, and the barista paired it with Dancing Waters (a light, caffeinated bean). The flavors came together perfectly and it was delicious black. None of that cream and sugar stuff needed for their coffee! But rest assured, it's there if you want it. Pro tip: if you bring in your own to-go cup, you get charged for the price of a small (and your cup can be up to 24 oz.)!! Amazing service. read more

Spacious, quick service, and very "Davis" When I walked it there was an employee at the bean bar doing yoga. The blue and yellow decor colors and the bike wheels on the wall made this local Cali chain feel like a small town cafe. There is a type of seating for everyone, and same with the menu! I ordered the mint mojito tea, and saw the real mint leaves be picked for my sweet and creamy drink. I recommend coming here if you want to feel like you're in an episode of Friends.
