Philz Coffee opened its first South Bay location here in El Segundo, next door to 2 other new popular lunch chains locations (Tender Greens and Shake Shack). Given the brand recognition of its neighbors, this Philz should be on track to a good profit, assuming it can draw the breakfast crowd. The ambiance was relaxed and fun. Baristas are nice and will patiently walk you through the unique process they use to make their coffee - there are no fancy machines, multi-syllable pseudo-Italian drink names or strange names for size S/L (no medium size). They do not make tall cappuccinos or venti macchiatos. These baristas do drip coffee (dark, medium and light) and tea with a paper coffee filter and can add flavorings from their 'full service bar.' There is a nice outdoor patio to catch up with friends or work on the laptop. The unisex bathrooms were clean and modern. We drank coffee: - Darker Blend, Jacob's Wonderbar - The barista filtered and then transferred the coffee into my cup with a long Turkish pull, pouring from way up high and producing a frothy foam on my black coffee. That was neat and helped me visualize the oils in this very dark and bold blend. Who knew? - Iced, Mint Mojito (+$1) - This drink took a bit longer than the others to assemble and was interesting to watch. I'd never seen or tried a mojito made from a coffee base and this was a refreshing surprise. The mint was fresh and strong but not overpowering, the cream was nicely balanced. I would def try this again - Medium Blend, Tesora - good with caramel notes as described in the menu - Medium Blend, Greater Alarm - eh, nothing alarming My husband and I are both big coffee drinkers but were both physically jittery after trying just one small cup. The coffee BUZZ here is REAL BIG! Would work wonders for the 3PM lull. The shop serves the expected pastries and snacks. Cookies we tried were like crack. ...Shop also makes the controversial hipster dirt bag novelty toasts. The bread is dense and unique, better than I've had in other chains. But the toppings are pretty thin and lackluster compared to counterparts who make these exceptionally well (e.g. Earth Bar) - If I'm buying something this easy to make, I expect it to be done WAY better than what I can make at home... read more

Philz is probably one of my top favorite coffee places in SF, so I'm super glad they added a few in LA! This location, in particular, is perfect for those around LAX/El Segundo/Manhattan area! I wanted a great drip/pour over coffee & this place offers a variety of light, medium, dark, etc. options! I'm not normally into adding items into my drinks, so this was the perfect place at 6am! Parking is conveniently located in the back of the place, but there is public parking literally adjacent to the store. No seats inside, but a cute patio with yellow seats is located outside. I saw a lady working with her laptop out & coffee in-hand! Walked up & was greeted with a smile. Something I want in the morning. I ordered a Plantlicious Earth in L, which came with a mint. She asked if I wanted any creamer, but no thanks! Philtered Soul has a hazelnut & chocolate flavor for those who want chocolate without the calories ;) You tell the cashier what you ordered, pay on a tablet, Tip is already calculated & bam. I love Philz coffee! I usually order ahead on the app and it's ready by the time I come in. My latest experience however, they were running behind. I overheard that someone had slept in, so there was definitely a crowd forming even for pickups. I had arrived on time and it took a while for anyone to acknowledge me. They had just started on my order a little after I arrived. I only had to wait about 5 extra minutes and the barista was very apologetic and super nice. I normally order the mint mojito (obsessed!). This last time I ordered a Philharmonic, super delicious! For any drink with mint though, they do put whole leaves in, so it's best to drink it fresh before the mint goes bitter. read more

LOVE PHILZ COFFEE! You get in line and wait until one of the baristas call you up for your order. You go pay at the cashier and wait for your drink. My go-to is the Iced Mint Mojito full sweet with soy milk. The barista asks you if you like the order is perfect - so take a sip, and if you need any changes let them know. I have tried their other drinks and their secret menu items, but I keep going back to the Mint Mojito. Second best is the Mocha Tesora! My favorite go to coffee spot when inn the area. I've been havjng this great coffee so about 3 years now and just about every time this place does not disappoint. I usually go with their tesora medium roast or when it's warm I do their mint mojo to which is a staple at this place. Service is usually great here and wait rarely long. One of the smaller location so not many seating but I i am usuaLly on the go so doesn't bother me. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area for sure. I will be back here! read more

The decor of this place is simple, but nice. I love that there are a lot of outdoor space. It was very comfortable to just sit there and relax for a bit. There is a lot of parking as well. I recently went back to LA to see some friends and eat some delicious food. I'm so glad to see that Philz has opened so many locations in SoCal. The store is located in a small plaza with ample parking not far from the high way exit. I went for the Honey Haze today, and boy was it good. I normally nurse my drink, but I couldn't stop with this one. Honey Haze is made with the Philtered Soul cold brew, oat milk, and of course honey. I could taste the sweet honey with every sip. Today was their first official day. Nice large patio seating and lots of free parking at the Apollo Landing complex. The menu signage is hard to read because it's at the very top and seems 20' off the floor and far behind the counter. This is because they have a big giant glass window. It's a good thing I love Philz Coffee, because my experience at this location was pretty awful. I'm not from the area, so I don't have the Philz Coffee app. I wish I did, because when I walked in and was first in line, I could see they were making the mobile orders. Not one of the 3 employees working even made eye contact or said "I'll be right with you." I hate that. 10 minutes later, they finally took me, the first person in line. I guess there was an order for 4 people that were right before me and the mobile orders, but it shouldn't take 10 minutes of me standing there before you take my order. Ordered my drink and was sent over to another employee to stand in line so I could pay. Then I got to stand and wait for my drink to get made. Overall, 20+ minutes in the store for a simple coffee. I get that it's handmade, and I do love their coffee, but had I been told it would be that long with 0 people in line in front of me, I would have went elsewhere. Excellent place!! I first tried Philz in San Francisco. I was hooked! At the time, SF was the only place to get it. You first decide what type of coffee you want. When you order it, they will ask you the sweetness level and if you would cream or not. I ordered the Manhattan, which is a light roast, medium plus sweetness, (1 1/2 tablespoons of brown sugar), and medium cream. It was perfect. The Manhattan has citrus, cherry and floral. You taste every note in this coffee and you wouldn't even think it goes together. So good. They have now several locations across California. If you see one, stop by. You'll love it. read more

My favorite coffee place! My favorite is the iced Mint Mojito coffee! I'm drooling just thinking about it! Philz is hands down my favorite coffee place with unique drinks! They have an outside seating area where you can study (free wifi) and the art/decor is really nice. Lastly, their cups are just built to perfection-- Great for holding hot or cold drinks. Awesome design. I love the interior decorations and how they personalize each employee in the front wall with their personal favorite drinks (So you don't have to ask for recommendations). Getting coffee here is a pleasant way to start the day. Coffee is great and always consistent. I love the different customizations to each drink and the baristas encourage you to taste after making they make it to make sure you like it. I am a HUGE fan of Philz, especially their iced mint mojito coffee, but I was extremely disappointed with my visit at this location. First of all, the parking lot behind this small shopping/food area is really small and very busy. We just sat in the car for a long time waiting for cars to come in and out and for spots to open up. Finally after parking, there was a huge line inside this location, it was out the door! There was a sign that the line moves quickly, but after my experience that sign was in fact a lie. There are only 4 drink-making stations, and only 3 people working. I think they need to adjust their staffing. This is also the smallest Philz location I've been to. I ordered my drink and luckily enough it was finished pretty quickly. However, my biggest problem with my experience here, was that it tasted nothing like a classic iced mint mojito! It was not sweet or creamy, and just tasted like very strong coffee. It was not the drink I wanted and was expecting. Now looking back, I did notice 2 other people ahead of me in line requesting adjustments to the same barista I had. I will be back to this location, but I really hope they can make their drinks correctly. read more

I discovered Philz in Norcal. They then opened one in Santa Monica, then they finally opened one closer to my home. This coffee shop/chain is my favorite. I crave their top drink the Mint Mojito. But I love, love, love all of the teas at Philz. My personal favorite and go-to is the black tea with milk. I ordered my usual: large black tea with whole milk. I will say that it seems their prices have gone up in the last few months -- or maybe it's just this location (?). Philz please do better. I ordered a $6.75 green chili burrito. I don't mind the price but to give someone a rock hard burrito is unacceptable. I bit one end and it was hard. I bit the other end and it was even harder. Unfortunately I will have to throw it away because it is not edible. Very disappointing. It's also very small, it looks much bigger in the picture. I am here, everyday! Maybe I'm a biased Cal graduate but I am so glad there are more Philz locations popping up around California. The baristas here are extremely friendly and will help you with any concerns or questions you have. There is always plenty of parking but make sure you order online cause wait times can get really backed up! + another star for not charging extra for oat milk! I don't mind waiting for our order to be taken while other drinks are made, but when a party of drinks is passed up for people behind me on Saturday August 21 6:15pm for God knows why, I find that unacceptable. If you haven't been to Philz, it's worth visiting at least once. The service is friendly and they are always willing to make adjustments or modifications to your liking, which is probably why the wait times are generally long. Definitely use the mobile app so you know how long of a wait to expect as the wait times listed on the app are generally accurate. The food is average and they only do coffee, no espressos. There's no indoor seating but they have a nice patio with plenty of tables and chairs. The shopping center gets pretty busy but overflow parking garage makes it convenient. read more

The cashier helped me order their two most popular drinks, mint mojito and Tesora, both "creamy". I was looking for a vanilla latte and she said the Tesora was the closest thing. It didn't taste like vanilla but it was okay. I usually don't like mint mojitos but I preferred it to the Tesora. They have a cute outdoor seating area, so I would definitely come back! Still a fan of the mint Mojito. Crushed fresh mint, cream and sugar which is customizable. I opted for light sugar but same amount of cream and it was good and creamy. I rarely like sweet coffees now. I have only been to Philz in Santa Monica years ago and only have gotten the mint Mojito, never trying the other types of coffee they have. By the way the mint Mojito uses their Tesora blend of coffee. Found that out while trying to switch to try another coffee in the mint Mojito. So really this review is based on one type of coffee. And because no other place makes this kind of drink that I enjoy, I had to give it high stars. Ample parking in a lot or the adjacent structure but shared with other business such as Randy's donuts and Shake Shack. Order with your barista and wait for your order where they will give it to you to see if any changes should be made and then pay to the left. Or can pay while waiting. They promote each coffee is made to order (fresh ground, brewed and specifically put together for each order). Waiting tine can be about 10 mins when your order has been placed. Very friendly service, upon ordering, the staff reassured us if we don't like the drinks, they can always remake something different. We ordered three drinks to go, Iced coffee Rose, Philtered Soul, and Terosa. I personally love the Rosé. The Rosé pink foam is sweet and creamy. My brother raves about the coffee here. He drove us to the El Segundo location. I understand what draws him here. The menu of various types of blends are great (for him). Since a vanilla latte was out of the question, I asked for a basic coffee with cream, the brown sugar offering was a foreign concept, so a no on that. I added sugar to taste (pictured) nothing could help this coffee. It was so bitter that nothing could pierce the taste on my tongue. I didn't want my brother to eat the cost so I asked different barista for a manager, a refund was due. Well, the barista named Kai didn't want me to leave dissatisfied. She asked to remake my coffee. After listening to what and how I prefer coffee, she made some tasty Tesora with cream, sweetened with brown sugar. She literally turned my mood around! I still spoke to a manager but I had to give Kai high praise. She deserves bigger tips and a raise! Please clone her!!! read more
