I've been coming here for a few years now and until recently was always satisfied with the brewed coffee...now it seems to be hit and miss. Since last March when their roasting facility was shut down due to a fire, the coffee blends don't taste the same. I understand someone else is probably roasting it for them, but the quality and flavor is not the same. I order black drip coffee with extra beans and sometimes it's rich and drinkable, but other times it tastes watery, thin, and I just dump it. It seems like the extraction time is inconsistent. This may be due to the fact that the store often seems understaffed and the employees are in a hurry. I will say that this location has some great employees and that's the only thing that brings me back lately. Hope they can get the consistency back on track. read more

If you're looking for drinks that aren't coffee based, then this is NOT the place for you. Drinks: - They only have coffee based drinks and bottled beverages - Mint Mojito latte was not as sweet as I would have liked it to be. Lacked some flavor. (Ask for extra sweet if you do get this one.) Food: They have pastries and a few sandwiches. I went at around 3:00 and most of the pastries were sold out, so I opted for a almond croissant. - Price for pastries is slightly more than at Starbucks, but I'd say in the normal range for cafe's. - Almond croissant: Tasty, but nothing special! - Blueberry muffin: Just your usual blueberry muffin. Nothing special. *I was disappointed that so many of their pastries were sold out. They're open until later, so I was wondering why they didn't have anymore of so many of the pastries. Bummer. Service: The people working at Philz were super nice. Very lovely staff. Ambiance & Seating: - No indoor seating - Outdoor seating but limited space & the space is shared with other restaurants in the area. - The outdoor seating area doesn't have a good view. The only views are of the parking lot and the busy street in front of you. - Interior of the cafe is small and clean. Overall, not my favorite cafe. Like a fine wine list, Philz menu breaks out coffee by roast and then by tasting notes. Select your coffee and they grind it on the spot and do the pour over. Timed, with a rising pour, stirring the grounds. There is a lot to it. Pro Tip - add cinnamon to the grounds... You can choose the level of sweet and creamy and they have multiple milks to choose from. I usually end up with an oat milk mocha tesaro no sugar. The mocha gives me a nice mild sweetness. Otherwise its just black for me. The staff is excellent, they have food options but it's all about the coffee. There is a nice patio, outlets, and wifi. So all bases are covered. I don't know why I've never tried this place before but, it's by far my new favorite coffee shop. My friends and I ate at Calo next door and I just so happen to need coffee for work so I stopped inside. I can't remember the exact name but it was an iced honey drink. I appreciate the barista for letting me taste my drink before I left the counter. Like why can't all coffee shops do that? I've never had anyone ask me that before and I quickly said yes when I didn't even taste it. The next time I went back though, I was prepared. Every time I go to Calo now, full or not, I stop and get an iced coffee for work the next day. Even the next day, it's still always perfect! I love this place, wish I had one closer to me. read more

We made a stop at night time, around 8 PM on a Sunday evening, and the parking lot was jam packed with guests for other eateries in the plaza. I ended up staying in the car and my husband ran in, he picked up: 5 stars Tesora Blend of beans: HOT pour over Wowie! What a smooth cup of coffee, this was delicious and left me wanting one of my own...the description of the roast is a Medium Blend with Aroma's of Caramel, Nuts, and Butter. I will have to pick this up for making espresso at home. Loved the clean, smooth flavors of this coffee. 3 stars Signature Mint Iced Coffee I did not enjoy this at all and quickly learned I don't like mint in my coffee. We both disliked the iced coffee in a paper coffee cup...would not order this again 3 stars Bran Muffin Too Sweet, but moist and flavorful Even though their drip coffee is upwards of $3 a cup which seems expensive for a basic pour over, we could taste the quality of the coffee. I look forward to having the Hot Tesora pour over again...and they have this lovely brown sugar to add to the coffee for sweetener...with cream...just a delightful cup of coffee and a pleasant surprise! I stop by this place when I have errands to run in the area. They never disappoint. Good coffee. Good service. Quick service. I've ordered in the store and also through the app. When I order through the app, I order a hour before and say I'm coming up in an hour. First time I did this, I was worried that the coffee would be cold by the time I get there but when I got there an hour later, the coffee was still hot as if they had just made it :) Service is friendly. Cashier was very helpful when I went there for the first time and I was being indecisive. When the order is ready, they make sure my order tastes good before I walk out of there. Right when you walk in, the line to order is on your right -- you'll order with the barista before walking over to the cashier to pay. It was a little confusing the first time I visited this location. The interior is small and may appear to get crowded, but I never felt like a sardine. The wait time for your drink however can be long which I would say is the only downfall here. They have a nice large outdoor area with seating and a beautifully painted wall showcasing cool artwork. There's a small patio with a few tables to hang although when I was there on Sunday morning, it was packed. The Philz is located right next to Randy's Doughnuts so you could grab a box to go with your coffee. Credit cards are accepted. After you pay, you wait until your name is called and get your napkins/drinks/tops at the side counter. I've been here quite a few times and I'm still lost when it comes to the way ordering works here, at least prior to COVID. So from what I remember... you stand in a line, wait until a barista is free (they'll either make eye-contact with you or call you up if they're nice), and then you walk to the counter to place your drink order. After that, you walk to another counter with a register, where another person will ring you up and ask if you want to include a pastry or food item to go along with your coffee. Finally, you go across the room and exit to the outdoor patio. It just never made sense to me, but that's how they do it here. Logistics aside, at least the drinks are good! If you haven't tried the Mint Mojito, now is the time to go. It's super creamy, mostly sweet, and refreshing with every sip. Iced Gingersnap is also a good choice, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg. They also have various selections of light, medium, and dark blends of coffee, a few decaf roasts, and an abundance of teas. I tried Dancing Water, which has light hints of chocolate and some nuttiness due to the almonds. I feel like it's a bit acidic for my taste. They also have an extensive food menu, ranging from baked goods to bagels to breakfast. The Mediterranean Avocado & Egg Toast is amazing! Toasted sourdough bread, generously spread with avocado, sprinkles of Za'atar herbs and other flavorings, and topped with slices of egg. It's not too filling, and makes a perfect snack. For something sweeter, try their Almond Butter & Jam Toast. Not a coffee connoisseur at all, but Philz has some tasty menu options that are worth a visit for breakfast or a quick bite with friends. The Philz coffee house/shop was a welcoming sight as we had booked a Hotel in Manhattan Beach area right across the street. Next to a Donut place, and a great Burger spot, Philz is the best coffee place within walking distance to us. I had ordered a few different times, but the Mobile app was the easiest way since they had a lot of foot traffic and the wait was minimal. I had a good experience both times and the Baristas were Super friendly. They are a good option if you needed to add a little more pep in your step in your morning. routine. I LOVE Philz Coffee and am so excited they're in South Bay! I bring basically all of my friends here who visit from out of town :) This location is incredible because it shares a common eating area with Randy's Donuts and is in the same parking lot as a new Shake Shack. You can literally just stay here for a few hours the food coma after. Coffee: The line moves pretty fast but you can order ahead via the app if you know you're in a time crunch. I always get their Mint Mojito, it's incredible. I sub milk for their vanilla soy milk which makes it taste better than the normal version in my opinion :) I love how you can customize your drink to be more/less creamy or sugary, and your barista always asks you to try it first to make sure it's your perfect cup of coffee. Finally got a chance to stop by Philz as I arrived to work realizing that I'd forgotten my coffee mug at home and the office machine just wasn't hitting the spot... The menu is very nicely laid out with the different levels (I usually stick to darks or mediums) and the flavor profiles of each brew. The barista who took my order had a few suggestions (which was amazing and very helpful since I had no idea what I was getting into. I landed on the Tesora (for the caramel flavor) and the barista suggested a number of different alternative milk choices - almond, oat, soy, etc... and also suggested honey as the sweetener since I was ordering it hot (it was a bit chilly in the office so I needed a warmup). That was an amazing combo. I'm a fan, and will be back to try some of the other offerings soon. read more

I've been to numerous Philz throughout SoCal and I'm glad there's one in the newly developed plaza that also includes Tender Greens, Shake Shack and Randy's Donuts to name a few. At Philz, you develop a personal connection with the barista since that's who you're giving your order to. After you order, you head to the cashier so they can ring you up. They operate on an honor system and I'm not sure if they cross-check what you tell the cashier versus what you tell the barista making your drink. Anyhow, I always stick to the mint mojito because that thing is addicting!! It's the perfect amount of coffee and sweetness for me. I could drink one every day! There's a nice little patio area where you can sit, enjoy your coffee and mingle/work. The parking situation can be a bit of a mess since there are so many shops in the plaza. This place is a hit or miss. Sometimes my drink comes out strong, good amount of oat milk and sugar (I always order medium oat milk, medium sugar), but it varies every time. I would say there's about a 50/50 chance of getting a good drink, and getting a drink that just straight up tastes watery and flavorless. My favorite drink is an iced oatmeal cookie. You can't order this through the mobile app, which is a bummer, but I always just add it in the comment hoping the barista will see. Now, other than the drinks being a toss up, I'm totally writing this review for the service and drink I got today. They're all kind, welcoming, and have good vibes. I don't think I have ever done a 1 star review in all honesty but woooooweeeeeee. First off the cashier, Breanna? It was printed on the coffee label was very unpleasant to talk to, it felt more of a "please get out of my face" attitude when taking my order. I ordered 2 ecstatics. I was realllllly anticipating great things about the coffee since everyone seems to rave about it. Oh boy. The disappointment. I swear to god I have been to so many coffee places and this was by far the worse I've ever had. It felt like I was drinking watered down coffee, like they put the water through a dirty sock put a sprinkle of espresso and served it to me. I tried it and I was like okaaayyy let me try mixing it and still to no avail no flavor. I tried my boyfriends since we ordered the same thing, his had a TINY bit more flavor but still with that being said very watered down flavor. As an east coaster I only recently discovered the joy of Philz Coffee. I love their drink creations and find them unique, interesting, fresh, and fun. My favorite is their mint mojito coffee drink with a little oat milk. Philz is a chain and each location will look a little different, but they are all relatively standard. I have always received friendly and excellent service at Philz and I enjoy getting a coffee from here. The location I frequent has a nice outside seating area with a cool astronaut wall painting with some shading available to avoid the sun. $5.25 for a cup of coffee. Yep, 5 bucks. The place is filthy too. They say they will bring the coffee out to you, but it took over 5 minutes to get this magical 5 dollar cup of coffee. Employees just don't care. Place wasn't even busy and the tables are full of filth and service is slow. PS1: Free Internet didn't work. PS2: Refill is $3.60 so 2 cups of coffee in a to go cup for $8.85 and you sit with other people's garbage on your table. Total clown show. PS3: They sell the world's most common diuretic and you can't use their bathroom. The employee told me their bathroom is not for the "public", but I noted I was a "customer" and she gave me an eye roll and walked off saying, "Go to Randy's because they let the public use their bathroom." My absolute favorite coffee shop on the South Bay. Located in the Apollo landing plaza, it's easy to access. I usually do takeout because I order on the fly but the service here is fantastic. The employees are always incredibly friendly and welcoming. The coffee is in the highest realm of taste and quality. I have never had a bad experience here and I've enjoyed every drink I've ever ordered here. My go to is the Philtered Soul cold brew. I usually do it straight black because the beans are such high quality and great alone. Add some light cream and sugar and you have yourself magic in a cup. It's highly recommended that you order ahead through their app because they get very busy by 8am. The drinks are made to order so you can expect to wait a bit if you don't order ahead. All in all this is easily my favorite coffee shop in the South Bay. The difference between here and Starbucks is night and day. read more

What's the point of allowing so many people to order close together when it backfires and makes customers angry? While waiting for 20 mins they refunded like 3 people, my cousin included. Service and line management - 2/5 stars Price (under $5) - rated sufficiently at ~$4 so 5/5 Parking and accessibility - 3/5 Taste / Freshness - 5/5 I like the smoothness of Philz iced coffee, it was shaken, it was sweetened evenly, and needed little milk (all milks were added at work to make the competition as objective as possible). I ordered through the app and life has been better since because I don't have to deal with the baristas in person. Just need my coffee, don't need the attitude. The only bad thing about the app is, if you don't order in advance, it takes forever to get your coffee. Like 20 min. I think it's because they have a ton of orders to fulfill.
