I was waiting for a very long time in another coffee/milk tea spot down the street when I eventually got tired of waiting and decided to walk down the street to see what else was good. I have only had philz one other time and it was a bad experience in the bay. When I walked in, the guy at counter was really friendly and described everything on the menu for me. He answered all my questions and helped me choose something eventually. I went with the Jacobs wonderbar. A good choice if you enjoy chocolate. I love the interior decor, it's got a nice bright clean rustic look. If I'm hungry, the bagels and breakfast burritos do the trick, but they have plenty of other pastries for you to try. Great cup of coffee, unique flavors like rose and mint mojito, natural sugars and flavors. All that is great. They have a great app and are pretty quick with mobile orders. Friendly staff and now they have Blue Star Donuts! Those are great donuts. My only gripe is that everything is so not cheap. My medium mint mojito was $5.75 before tip. These aren't espresso drinks. The Blue Star donuts and other pastries are pushing $5. It is just a bit much for a cup of coffee and a bite, especially when 1/2 my coffee was ice and mint leaves/sprigs. It was my goal during our trip to go to Philz and get a mint mojito latte! When we got here it was fairly busy but the line went by quickly and orders were completed in a good amount of time as well. I also got a pastry and a breakfast burrito to go. The mint mojito was superb! Now I know why everyone has this drink. I loved the minty flavor in the coffee drink which was well balanced with the other components. The food was alright, just decent. I would probably skip the burrito next time since it was a smallish size for the price I paid. So, go here for that delicious coffee and you won't regret it! read more

I wasn't a huge fan of Philz until I went to this location. I usually go to the HB location. I like this one a whole lot better because it's much more pleasant. It's usually not as pack, I don't feel rushed, and the people working are really nice and always help me decide what I want. I came here recently with a friend and got their seasonal Gingersnap Iced Latte with extra heavy cream and light sweetness. It was perfect. A medium was a little more than $5. The Mint Mojito is always my go to!! All the Philz are pretty consistent but this time I was surprisingly disappointed!! I ordered the Mint Mojito with almond milk. Quality: Initially it's as good but I had a hard time drinking it so I opened the cup the find a whole bunch of mint. I literally got 1/3 of the drink where as the rest was 2/3 mint. I was pleasantly pleased to discover my order was prepared with the swiftness despite the large line of walk up customers. I recommend you get their app. Although my coffee muffin was not available I was given at least 4 other alternatives, it was a chocolate croissant (warmed) sorry no picture I ate it and it was fresh, soft, rich with soft chocolate and incredibly delicious. I actually savored slowly and forgot to take a picture. In addition I tried their ice mocha tesora rich smooth refreshing ice coffee with a hint of cocoa, tasty. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. WiFi worked like a charm no passwords or special login to gain access to. Friendly atmosphere as I noticed families with children, and neighborhood regular customers as the baristas knew many of their customers by name. First time at Philz coffee for me even though I have gone past their branches few times. They always seemed to be busy and noticed that people inside enjoy their coffee at this place. They have unique blends and the menu itself is very unique compared to comparable coffee shops. This particular branch on the 2nd street is extremely well lit with natural light. Nice seating arrangements for hanging out with friends and family and have a great time. The service here is great, they patiently explain their coffee and I can see the pride in them and the confidence on the quality of the coffee they are serving, which is a great sign. Doesn't feel like just another franchise of a popular coffee brand. Ordered the iced mint mojito latte and it was not too sweet and had a perfect flavor to it. I hate to write this review because I've been a loyal Philz customer for years, but my son and I had a really bad experience this morning. If you don't want to wait an extra 30 minutes and get snapped at multiple times by staff, go somewhere else for coffee. I placed a mobile order (nothing big, one coffee & two cookies) for 7:30. It was confirmed. At 7:30 they were slammed - clearly understaffed and way behind. Tons of stressed out people waiting. My young kid was with me and I had to run to take him to school. After 10 minutes, I asked about the status. The person grabbing food was very rude, insisted we had no order (even I showed him on my phone), and then tossed cookies at us. The person making coffee was also very sharp. She asked if we could wait, I said no we had to leave, and she said instead of refunding the order, her coworker would make ours next. We waited another 5 minutes, her coworker didn't make the coffee, and then she said snappily, "So you can wait? If you want a refund, you can just leave." We left without coffee, 15 minutes after our scheduled time, and rushed to school. I have no idea if they actually put through the refund. A ton of unnecessary stress to start the day. Two stars instead of one because management clearly put them in a tough position. But there's no need for the attitude. And management should know they're losing loyal business. read more

Quality is on point every time, though if your coffee has been waiting on the counter a bit, give it a stir so all the flavors are evenly distributed, ya know? I usually order on the app before I leave home and pick it up on my way to work. Parking is an ordeal bc it's in the middle of a crowded college town and people don't always adhere to the rules stating that the parking is for mobile orders only! Rule breakers need to go to jail or at least have something gross thrown on their windshield! But I digress. To me, Phil'z is top tier right along with Phin Smith, Da Vien, and Dutch Bros. When I walk in the energy is so low and passive aggressive that it is palpable. The service is lethargic. It looks like people hate working here which makes the patrons feel dismissed. It used to be the direct opposite. I used to drive a very long way in order to get to this location. I don't think it is only at this location that the energy and the service standards are incredibly low. I travel from LA to SD and it seems to be a consistent problem through the entire chain. I don't know if the company was sold or management turned over or anything else, but I can tell you that everything is now much worse than it was before.
