A classic coffee spot with unique drinks. Great service with your drinks and a space you can chat or do some work.

I've been coming here since 2008 and this spot never disappoints. It's one of the few locations that still does things the old school Philz way before they scaled and some of it's stores lost its charm. At this location, you order directly with the barista before heading to the register. Just tell the cashier what you ordered (honor system) and they ring you up. The baristas are super knowledgeable and are there to help answer your questions if you're unsure about what you want. When your drink is ready, they call your name and hand it to you without a lid so you can take an initial taste test. If you're not satisfied, they'll fix it on the spot. Once you're good to go, grab a lid and you're all set! Simple but such a nice touch that you don't see anywhere else anymore. If you're nearby, definitely stop by! Honestly, it's worth going a little out of your way and there are cool local shops and things to check out around the area too.

I always love stopping at Philz when in town. The coffee is delicious. I always get some beans to take back home. The drinks are fun and different than what we have back home. Every time has been consistent and I haven't had a bad drink yet. The shop is always cheerful and crowded with people in the morning. It is definitely a fun place to grad a drink but maybe too loud to work or sit and chat.

Philz is great, I really enjoyed it. I ordered the Philtered Soul, very tasty! The barista was very nice, patient and gave me a couple of suggestions since it was my first time coming to Philz. I will definitely come back when I'm in San Jose.

I frequent this Philz location as I work in DTSJ. My go-to order is a Large Philtered Soul Philz way ($5.95) - medium cream, medium sugar. Minus one star for not using the Philz app for pre-ordering drinks. Sometimes it can take up to 30-minutes to get your coffee depending on how busy it gets. I've also had times where I've gotten my coffee in 10-minutes. Some baristas are friendlier than others, but I've never had any issues here. You wait in line, place your drink order with a barista, pay for your drink, then wait for your coffee to be called. There are couches and tables usually taken by studious college students. There is plenty of street parking nearby and also a parking garage with free 90-minute parking.

I've been coming here since 2010 and it's still one of my favorite Philz locations. Came on a Sunday at 10 AM and it was fairly packed. I ordered the Mint Mojito which was delicious as always. The wait was around 15 minutes, which is reasonable given the crowd. What really sets this spot apart is that it still honors the original Philz tradition - baristas ask you to taste your drink before you leave and they'll happily remake it if something's not right. Most SF locations have dropped this practice and even the North San Jose one doesn't do it anymore. It's refreshing to see it upheld here. The vibes are great and the customers are always friendly. I'm not sure if it's officially dog friendly but I saw a few dogs inside. There are also a couple of outdoor tables if you prefer to sip your coffee in the fresh air.

First time going to this location since it's right near campus. The way this Philz Coffee operated in terms of ordering and paying was quite confusing. Could've been managed or set up better but I understand how chaotic and busy it could be. I wasn't really satisfied with my iced mint mojito. I got a large with almond milk and Splenda (healthier option). I used 3 Splendas but my drink was soooooooo bitter. The mint flavor wasn't really present either nor was my drink that creamy. And I tend to get Philz at other locations often so this was a bit sad.

I loved the mocha and Amann. It was perfect amount of bitter and sweet. The Rose was a bit too sweet for my taste, but my husband seemed to love it. It's a sweet spot by the University. There was a long queue, and that only goes to show how much it is loved. Staff was managing well. Good ambiance. It has indoor as well as an outdoor seating. It has wifi too so thats a plus!

Philz coffee is one of the first coffee shops I went to during my first semester of SJSU religiously. It's always a safe choice to get and they always cater to your taste. Which is one of reasons why I love Philz. They're very customer oriented and make sure that the coffee will taste right. It does get pretty noisy due to the popularity of the coffee shop, but it just shows how well they're doing! Not pictured is the drinks. My usual go to is the ecstatic with extra sugar and extra creamy or the Cinnamon Toast Crunch. It's not too far from campus so it's always worth the wait and walk!

Came by for coffee the other day and it was a tasty experience. Ordered with the barista at the counter and paid with the cashier towards the door. There was a slight wait to get to the barista. Drinks are made to order and my iced mint mohito was pretty strong, sweet and creamy as requested. The Gen Z barista was super chill and friendly.

Philz Coffee is one of my favorite coffee shops so I'm so happy to have so many locations close by since moving to the Bay Area! Of course, I had to pick up a bag of coffee beans as well for some home brewing. The mint mojito is one of my favorites for a sweet treat and it's one of their classics. They also have plenty of other blends, ranging from light, medium, and dark flavors.

Been hearing the hype about this place (the original Philz from which there have been many others that have opened in various cities) for years so I finally came to try it! I was not disappointed! Get the Mint Mojito iced! So refreshing! Customer service is great and patient, you can adjust the sweetness and cream level to your liking too. The line was long, going out the door on a Saturday afternoon but they are pretty efficient!

Every time I visit this Philz in Downtown San Jose, it takes me back to my days as an undergrad at SJSU. I love that it's walking distance from campus, and the service is always quick and friendly. The coffee is amazing, definitely one of my favorite spots.

What time this location usually close?

On Google, it shows their hours as 6am-5pm. On Yelp it shows 6am-6pm.

Will this location ever be on the Philz app? If so, when?

Not sure, but I just ordered through the caviar app and that works!

Are they still selling their food (as of Aug 15, 2020)? I didn't see their avocado toast or anything on Caviar, so I was wondering if their breakfast food is still available to order in-person

I believe they're just selling the baked goods. That's All I recall seeing on my last visit

Ask anyone ever asked to have their drink remade? I know they always ask you to taste it. I haven't had a bad drink, but just some are better made then others.

I'm just a customer, but I've personally seen one person ask to have their drink remade because they didn't like the way it tastes. I know the staff gives you the option as well. They're super friendly and open to it, so don't feel bad to ask if you… Read more

    The bushes!

What app do people use to order online at this location?

I believe this location uses Caviar but other locations uses the Philz app (only available on the Apple App Store)

I think there are several reasons the coffee is pricey: 1) pour over is slow so the making of the drink takes as long (if not longer) than making a complicated order. 2) coffee beans are of good quality 3) there is enough of a following that they… Read more

Temperatures were just under 90 degrees Fahrenheit outside. The air conditioning was great in here, not freezing cold but cool enough to be comfortable. There were a few other tables of people with their laptops out, and I was excited to see that they have expanded since my last visit and added more seating for customers. The lotus milk tea is still one of my favorites in the whole city. We sat at a table so there was no outlet, but I can't remember if there were outlets along the walls for the booth seating. The WiFi worked well and if there was background music it was not being blasted loudly. I would definitely keep this spot top of mind if I needed a reliable spot to work remote again, especially since there is now more seating than there used to be. Fingers crossed that I will be able to attend their grand opening. While I like the cherry blossom concept behind it, it left me rather disappointed when it came to the service and making of the drinks. While the coffee shop felt spacious and more than enough space to accommodate everybody, it just felt rushed throughout the whole time I was there. Their drinks were another dimension. I got their EGGspresso Hanoi, which surprisingly, was not bad at all. I loved how consistent the egg batter was, and the consistency of the coffee was quite equal. I will be back to try their other drinks, and hoping that their customer service could improve just a little bit more. I know they have the potential, but being more courteous goes a very long way compared to being bland in attitude, obviously.

Each drink is hand-whisked, so well worth the wait. Their cold foams were delicious and super flavorful as well. I was so excited to try the mango sticky rice matcha, as I hadn't seen this flavor anywhere else. The drink has a creamy salted coconut milk cold foam on top and some mango puree and glutinous rice on the bottom. Once everything was mixed, the mango flavor does get lost unfortunately. But still, the drink was amazing and rich. The guava li-hing matcha was sooo vibrant! I loved how the tropical flavor of the guava cold foam sprinkled with li-hing balanced out the earthy matcha. I've tried other guava matchas with guava puree on the bottom rather than cold foam on top, but I definitely prefer the latter to preserve the matcha flavor. I thought it was really cool that they have a slow coffee bar area specifically for pour overs (I think) where tech isn't allowed, so people are just supposed to sit and enjoy their coffee. I've never seen that before in a coffee shop. The menu is extensive. Since it was later in the day, the baked goods were half off, which was a nice surprise. I got a blueberry latte and an Asian fusion focaccia bread. Blueberry latte - I liked this! The blueberry flavor was subtle and not overly sweet or artificial tasting. It added a light fruity note to the coffee without overpowering it. Fusion focaccia bread - This was tasty, but I felt the original price was steep ($12). My piece was around 6" x 3". The shiitake mushroom flavor was strong and I loved the addition of scallions and Chinese sausage sprinkled throughout the bread. Overall, this is such a cool addition to coffee culture in the South Bay. It feels like shop from a big city like SF, NYC, or Chicago instead of little ol' SJ. The ambiance and options are solid, and it has a vibe that makes you want to stay awhile. You can be a casual coffee drinker or a coffee snob and it will be a satisfying experience.
