Really awesome experience! I take my sister to SJSU at times and I stop by the stores around downtown to check out, and Philz was one that I conveniently went to! I've heard many great things about Philz, and I was really excited to finally try it. The cashier was super nice and patient in describing the different kinds of teas and flavors to me, and she corrected me very patiently when I said Yerba MATE not MAH-tay! I really appreciated that, and I opted for a Yerba Mate in the end, where she also patiently mentioned that it has a really distinct bitter taste. It did have a very distinct and bitter taste. It was kinda like a mix between a coffee and a tea, and I sat down to work in the shop. It was a little crammed in there and there wasn't lots of places to work since it was packed, but it was a nice experience. I docked off one star for the loudness and for it not being an optimal study space due to the noise and being cramped, but otherwise it was cool! For study spots in Downtown, I'd highly recommend Voyager. It's about 10ish minutes away by car but it has a ton of space and there's an indoor and outdoor spot for your preferences. read more

So every Sunday my hubby and I try different coffee shops where we go hang out for a while and plan out our self care day. We've never had Philz before but a few weeks ago we visited the selfie spot next door and decided to come back and try this after seeing a line out the door. When we arrived there was, again, a line out the door despite the sprinkling. The cashier helped us select a few items and pastries and they were all so tasty. I was a little thrown off when they gave me my iced coffee with no lid but I got over it quickly after the first sip. My only complain is that after warming up my chocolate croissant it just basically fell apart in my hands as I tried to eat it. read more

Earlier in the morning, I was in San Francisco and visited the location I've been to the most in the FiDi. A bit later, I rode down to San Jose, grabbed some lunch, and was looking for a pick-me-up. Where should I go? Obviously my 2nd Philz of the day. In SF that morning, the wait time was incredibly long. But I figured at 2pm, in a place with less foot traffic, it would be much less here. Incorrect. There were more people in this Philz than I saw on the 15 minute walk to Philz. And the wait was just as long. It seems a lot of people order online ahead of time - something I will need to do in the future. But you know what? My mint mojito was absolutely perfect. How can I be mad that everyone else is chasing perfection along with me? Philz is expanding to Texas is the only way I could love them more. read more

At first, I wasn't expecting much from regular coffee, I thought it would be similar to coffee bean and Starbucks. Just coffee with sugar and cream, but this place has unique flavors of coffee. One of them was a mojito coffee. It tastes like the mojito alcoholic drink but with coffee. Other flavors were chocolate and strawberry coffee drinks I'll have to try in the near future, but this mojito one really took me by surprise. I went here with two people that live in the same area as I do and they also enjoyed it. I actually never knew this place existed until they told me about it. In the morning, I felt that this place was not busy even with the COVID going around. It is surrounded by other food chains in downtown San Jose. The coffee is definitely better than Starbucks and coffee bean. The prices are high unfortunately but, the coffee was not bad. The small was $5.60 but mine was $1.00 more because they put in a special ingredient, leaves inside the coffee,lol. Normally without the leaves or special ingredient it would have been $4.60 not $6.60 to be clear. The medium is $1.00 and large $1.00 more on top of that. I don't suggest getting any bigger due to the price but also the sugar overload. Although the coffee tasted good, the other ingredients are unknown and I believe they put some sugar and milk with high calories. Just be aware of that. Other than coffee, I only saw croissants and pastries inside the containers but not on the menu. Unfortunately due to COVID, I couldn't go inside the place to see what else was offered. Customer service is good. Coffee is always good. But lost a couple stars for a few gripes. One is that this location, for whatever reason, doesn't participate in the Philz app's mobile ordering. Literally every other Philz does, except here. So I had to order via DoorDash so I wouldn't stand in line, but DD charges about $0.50-0.90 more per cup than in-person. So that was annoying, but whatever. Then, since I paid a premium for DD mobile ordering and skipping the line, I show up and there is a line 8 people long which everyone, mobile orders or in-person orders, must stand in. I understand things work a little different during COVID, but what is the point of ordering via mobile if I then have to wait another 10 minutes in line? There should be two lines. One line for in-person orders, the other should be a line for pick-up orders. I don't see why they couldn't staff the pick-up line with a person who can distribute drinks that are ready to go. read more

Philz is definitely a treat, not an everyday thing. As someone who usually takes their coffee black, something with so many other ingredients / is quite sweet is more of a dessert. Everyone raves about the mint mojito, which is obviously their signature drink, but I am more of an Ecstatic fan! I hate lines / waiting, and if you do too, order through the caviar app! It's super simple to look up this Philz location on the app, and order a drink + make the proper adjustments / mortifications so that the sweetness and creaminess are to your liking. As for the coffee blends, I like the Philtered soul because it has hints of Hazelnut (yum!!) and chocolate. You can get 1 pound for ~$18. You can also order secret menu items such as the dancing soul or iced Harlem ;) Location wise - it's nestled inside a little plaza-like/court like area with other establishments. Parking wise, you'll have to do street, metered parking. It's not really a struggle to find parking, in my experience. read more

This is probably my favorite Philz location due to the general vibe and friendly staff! I feel like the drinks here are consistently good and I haven't had any issues so far. It really feels like they pay attention to crafting each drink. It's located in downtown SJ and right next to SJSU and the MLK Library, so fair warning that it is a busier location. There is usually a line out the door whenever I try to go, but the baristas are pretty efficient, so getting your food or drink shouldn't take too long! My go-to drink is the Soul Train or the Tesora. I like the get it sweet and creamy, which makes it a mini treat to start my day. This place used to be busy, line out the door and you would still be greeted with a smile. Now there is no one in line and you're ignored. But I've never seen them walk in and out with free $7 coffee and be treated better than people waiting in line that go every single day and are forgot about or ignored. Coffee has fallen off, very inconsistent and if you ask them to remake it they aren't very nice about it. I'm all for a unique family owned coffee shop over Starbucks, but this place is not it. I have not touched Starbucks since experiencing Philz Coffee. Growing up in San Jose, I always heard about Philz. Philz was the go-to spot for coffee and very much an "it-girl" coffee spot. Everyone raved about it so much in high school, but coffee always tasted the same everywhere I went. Even friends in Vegas would tell me how lucky I was to be able to go back home where there was Philz. When I started working in the same area as a Philz, my co-worker decided to take me and it changed my coffee life forever! I've been obsessed with Philz ever since and I have not drank any other coffee since then. My go-to order is a Large Iced Philtered Soul Cold Brew, Medium Sweet, Honey, Creamy, Almond Milk. If they had an extra large, I would order it in a heartbeat! Pro-tip: Order ahead of time online. Or use the secret menu Cinnamon Toast Crunch Milk as a milk choice if you're ordering IRL! read more
