Phin Smith is one of my favorite coffee shops and one of the few places whose coffee I actually crave. On my very first visit, I ordered the Dustino and I've been getting it ever since. It's a Costa Rican-style mocha with a rich, bold flavor that's perfectly balanced without being overly sweet. The Oahu Joe is another great option if you prefer something sweeter. It's a Hawaiian-style latte that's smooth, flavorful, and definitely satisfies a sweet coffee craving. Despite how busy the shop can get, drinks come out surprisingly fast since they have several baristas working behind the counter. The staff is always friendly, knowledgeable about their coffee, and happy to answer questions or make adjustments to customize your drink. One thing that's a little different is that you pick up your drinks at the counter first, then head to the register to pay for whatever you ordered. The café also has plenty of seating, whether you're stopping by to work, catch up with a friend, or meet with a larger group. There are individual tables, a large round table, a cozy couch area, and outside patio seating. It's conveniently located in the historic downtown area, with plenty of street and nearby lot parking, making it an easy spot to visit. Highly recommend if you're looking for quality coffee and a welcoming atmosphere!
I've written reviews for Phin Smith in the past and although I've mentioned that Coconut Coffee is one of my favorite items from here, I wanted to write an update about it. I've tried Coconut Coffee from Da Vien and Kei Coffee House and I much prefer the one from Phin Smith. The coconut milk they use just tastes better. Also, their espresso shots are strong and pairs well with the coconut milk. It is not overly sweet and just tastes better. I still love the fact that they don't charge extra for getting an extra shot of espresso in your drink! Service here is always great - baristas and cashiers are friendly and helpful. Love Phin Smith!
Second time here. I had an iced banana coffee which is made with Vietnamese coffee instead of espresso (which i typically order). The drink was as good as I remembered and the ambiance here is nice for 3pm on a Friday. The barista was super friendly talking through drink options. I ended up ordering 50% sweet which was perfect and still seemed pretty sweet to me. I'll be back.
Great drink, I love a balanced banana coffee. It felt like the banana was roasted and caramelized (not sure), but it left me with a great aroma in the coffee. I cannot wait to go try more flavors. I like half sweet drinks since I'm getting old, but there still is a lot of flavor when doing so (not feeling watered down). When you ask for less ice they do not fill it up all the way (boo), but ratios matter if they want a consistent drink. They are like Philz in that they will ask if you are good with the coffee and if there needs to be a modification.
I had a huge "yikes" moment when I tasted my drink, because I know they'll modify your drink if you don't like it... but my issue was that I didn't like the entire thing, so I didn't want to say anything. I thought the whole thing was gross. NorCal's Phin Cafe is way better, along with the other Vietnamese egg/ube/pandan/etc coffee places that have been hype on social media lately (Phin Smith does not have some of these flavors - they're behind!). - Coconut Coffee The marbling is kind of cute, but the flavor is not potent or good enough. We've had plenty of coconut coffees pop up in NorCal and Phin Smith's coffee was meh. It was just missing creaminess, sweetness, coconut flavor, wasn't too strong on the coffee, and had a little extra water/crushed ice dilution. If rating this itself, it'd be average to below average. We had to add their self-serve simple syrup to make it taste better. We usually don't need to add anything when ordering at various places in NorCal because they actually get it right. - Peach Breeze Disgusting, one of the worst beverages that I've ever consumed in my life. It literally just tasted like someone opened canned peaches and added water to it. I AM NOT EXAGGERATING. I also asked for half ice and a majority of the thing was still large ice cubes. I don't drink coffee, but I'm not sure if I would have liked their other drinks on the menu considering their best selling coffee was barely satisfactory. Other than the subpar drinks, the inside had some sticky spots and could use some cleaning with actual cleaning product. Lots of people seemed to be enjoying themselves on their laptop, and I saw a few people buy their coffee bags. I liked how there was a cute motorbike outside and on the logo. I'll also add an extra star for having reasonable prices, so I didn't feel scammed after drinking this horrible concoction.
Still a great place for a fine catered to your liking coffee place. Hadn't been back here for awhile but was in the area and got to get some caffeine here. Same layout (except for the cashiers moved to another area. The menu are mostly the same with few additions or seasonal and few pastries. Parking is easy with front street parking or parking lots behind the shop or across the street. Spacious & clean with plenty of tables for in store enjoyment with friends or online works/homework. Still a popular place with line (most in the weekends or holidays). Friendly, nice, and detailed service. Drinks are considered and greatly make. Glad that I stopped by and enjoyed it with great memories here.
Every time we're in the area I have to come by here. We don't have anything like this place in Northern California. The menu is definitely expanded but the service and quality never disappoints. You walk in it's a fun vibe everyone's enjoying their coffee and conversation. I got the traditional iced Vietnamese coffee and that's great as usual. My wife got the Phin and tonic. I took a sip while she wasn't looking and it's great. Also got a bag of Matcha powder for our daughter as a Surprise
Fast service and consistent quality. Go on farmers market Sunday weekend and you'll be able to enjoy your latte while enjoying artisanal goods. Tried the seasonal Korean corn Oatmilk latte - the corn milk was good. The cheese foam wasn't as cheesy as expected which I liked and more on the sweeter and creamier side. Great colors and presentation. I've been here before but it's been a hot second so interesting to see the changes to their lids.
I was in the area and I saw that this was one of the highest rated tea shops that offers blended blueberry Matcha so I decided to see what the hype was all about. This has a different type of concept where you order your drink, but you don't pay for it at the time that you order it you order it and then you go to a separate counter once your drink is finished to pay for it. My drink came out to about seven dollars, and I thought it was a nice spin on a traditional classic, but the blueberry Matcha blend was a little overly sweetened for my taste. The blueberry doesn't taste like it's from a natural source, maybe from a syrup. I wouldn't mind returning to try their strawberry matcha blend, which I heard is also a very popular drink. If you go on a Sunday during their farmers market parking will be a little bit tricky, but you can walk the alley viewing some local merchants selling fresh produce, which is nice.
Finally got to try Phin Smith! They have locations-Garden Grove and Torrance. The Oahu Joe was nutty, creamy and had a hint of coconut. Definitely worth trying if you like creamy sweet coffee. I love the fact that you can try your coffee and make sure the coffee is to your liking before paying. There is a line! So be prepared to wait a little. Tons of street parking.
The Vietnamese coffee here is seriously strong in the best way. The flavor is bold and you can definitely feel the caffeine, but it is not overly sweet which I really liked. The coffee taste actually comes through instead of being covered up. They also let me try the drink before buying it to make sure I liked it, which I thought was a really nice touch. The ordering process is also a little different since you get your drink first and then line up to pay, but it worked out fine. The place itself is really cute with a nice vibe. There is seating both inside and outside, so it is a good spot to hang out for a bit.
I can't believe this coffee shop was so close by. I used to visit the Mexican restaurant next door often years ago. Nice to be back on Main Street again because these drinks were delicious. Love that you get to taste before buying, kinda like Philz Coffee but better. Banana coffee was so good that I didn't realize it was gone so fast. Blueberry matcha was good, different but still enjoyable. I was able to get my drinks with oat milk, which was nice. Paid around $12 and some change for both. It's pretty roomy inside for studying, working, etc., and there's enough seating on the patio as well. Friendly servers too.

The coffee shop did not disappoint! Really deserves it's 5/5 rating. We got the coconut coffee and the banana coffee latte. We were surprised the coconut coffee was a frozen type coffee as we assumed it was a latte at first glance of the photos. But making it a frozen type latte made it x10 more refreshing! The banana latte was super good as well! Both of them are just the right amount of sweetness. It was super busy when we came in but we were able to get our coffee really fast! You order first then go to a separate kiosk to pay near the back which we were a bit confused about but found to be very efficient. Everyone was pleasant to talk to! My Phin Smith café review is long overdue. I came here for my first time when they were still new. They're consistently great: drinks, ambiance, and service! My favorite drinks are the charcoal latte and café sua da. I even drive by before work just to get my fix. I also love studying at this café. It gets pretty busy but the ambiance is great. Everyone is busy getting their own work done. There's not much noise. Also, don't worry about being at a table near a plug. They have these portable chargers so you can plug your laptop charger! The workers here are friendly and service is sooo great. They'll adjust or change your drink if you're not satisfied with it. In addition, they don't charge until you get your perfect drink made. 4.5/5 stars This is my second time having this place and it is one of my favorite spots for Vietnamese coffee!! Beware though, the coffee was very strong for someone who is not a regular drinker and it made me stay up until 3am the first time around. I got my friends phin style Vietnamese coffee (sea salt cream and hazelnut - sweeter drink) and a regular Vietnamese coffee (less sweet side) who said they were delicious. I ordered a lavender latte, one of my favorite all-time lattes, and unfortunately I could not taste the lavender at all. Service was excellent. You can order the drinks and adjust how they taste similar to Philz. Would return to try their other drink items! read more

Drinks- love that that ask if it's your first time there or first time trying a drink! They don't charge you until you take your first sip and they will adjust it to your tastebuds. I really love their matcha and sea salt coffee hand drip! Again, you can adjust the sweetness which is perfect for someone that doesn't like their drinks too sweet. The charcoal one was cute for photos, the flavor was a little different and strong for me! Service - A+ service, they are all super sweet and friendly! I'm so happy to stumble across this coffee shop. The interior is wonderfully decorated with flowers and gold accents. There are plenty of tables for small and large groups to sit comfortably. I'm definitely coming back here with my laptop to do some work. There were two really friendly baristas at the counter who greeted me and asked to take my order. Looking at the menu, I couldn't choose between the lavender latte and the charcoal latte. The barista said the charcoal was very popular and I can taste why. It's delicious! It tastes milky and light. I would definitely get it again. read more
YESSSSSS!!! Another cute little coffee shop near me. I'm surrounded by amazing coffee, and now there's one more to add to my list of places to go. Located on Main Street in Garden Grove, where I hung out as a high schooler! Things have changed around here, and I'm super happy! I remember seeing businesses open then close couple months later. Historic Main Street is such a lovely little strip of GG, I'm so happy small businesses are opening up & doing well. The space, wowwww!!! Super cute interior! I love everything about it, spacious and lovely decor all over. Service is awesome, the guys this morning were so friendly. Plenty of parking! Sunday is the flea market so go early! I got the cold brew 5/5, tastes super fresh, has a nutty taste to it, and price is very reasonable. I will be back, very soon! read more

If you keep wanting to go here and have always told yourself to try another day but have never gotten the chance to try this place, then you are missing out! The finishing details of the coffee cup graphics & coffee/cocoa powder on top of the sea salt coffee adds a really nice touch and aesthetic for your feed. The interior and exterior of the store is modern, eclectic, and minimalist, but most of the furniture is rearranged to follow pandemic guidelines. I love the coffee flavor! It's very light in terms of flavor and sweetness so it caters to my sensitive tastebuds. It's like the lighter version of the sea salt coffee at 7 Leaves! read more

when traveling, I love checking out unique local coffee shops! I found Phin Smith on Yelp, perused their menu, and I knew I had to try it. And I'm so glad I did! I came on a Friday afternoon, and they were pretty busy! The shop itself was full with just a couple open tables left. It is a bit loud, so something to keep in mind if you're trying to get some work done. The set up is different than what I'm used to. You place your order with a barista, they make your drink, taste it (& make sure everything is to your liking) and you pay at the end. I got the coconut coffee, which is a blended drink. It's probably now my favorite coffee! The coconut and the espresso pair really well together without being overly sweet, with the perfect amount of creaminess. My barista (I forgot his name!) was super friendly! He had me try it to make sure that everything tasted great, which it did. I'm so happy I found this place, but also sad that they don't have a location in NorCal (..please open one!). Will definitely return when I'm in the area! read more

After reading 5 star reviews I was really excited about this place. Got the Vietnamese iced coffee with hazelnut cream on bottom and salted cream on top. It's really good but very rich. I could honestly only drink less than half as it was giving me a stomach ache. Plus the coffee taste is really strong. It kind of reminds me of Philz Coffee where there's a lot of cream, a lot of sugar and a lot of caffeine. Also got the lavender latte iced which wasn't really a fan of. Couldn't really taste the lavender. Also very creamy and sweet. Not sure if I will come back as the drinks are too rich for my stomach. However the service was really fast and efficient. read more

Came in to try out this new coffee place and see if I could get some work done. Decor is cute, it was apparent that they were paying homage to their namesake (phin) which is the Vietnamese word for filter, used in drip coffee. There was a moped out front, florals of peonies along the exterior walls and center pieces. There's a bar area, where we chatted with the baristo on drink recommendations. We were asked to wait at the bar where we could watch our drinks being hand crafted, and then proceed to pay when the drink was ready. Baristos were wearing denim shirts, overalls, and a paper boy hat that went along with the ~vibe~ they were trying to create. I had mentioned to our baristo that it was my first time and he showed enthusiasm in getting us acquainted with the menu. He had mentioned his personal favorite was the charcoal latte, which to his words was "activated charcoal, with honey, and a nice creamy milk" - I asked him what kind of milk was used and he seemed to have been stumped with that question, answering "um.. it's like.. regular milk." Okay, so like... whole milk??? I proceeded with a follow up question asking if there were other milk options available (since as someone who is lactose intolerant, whole milk and activated charcoal sounds like a recipe for something... not fun later on), but was informed that there are currently no substitutions available for their signature drinks. Ordered the charcoal latte anyway because I figured it's the specialty and I wanted to try something that was unique to them. (Had a lactaid pill ready though, so I'm good~) The charcoal latte tasted more like milk to me than it was a latte. The charcoal gives it a nutty flavor, so it tasted like a black sesame milk tea. A baristo had come by and asked me how I liked the drink and I had told him I was looking for something leaning towards a coffee. This new baristo made me a lavender latte on the house, which was greatly appreciated. The lavender latte had the coffee flavor I was craving for, since it's espresso based. The lavender taste leaned towards an earthier flavor, rather than a floral flavor. I'm still trying to decipher how I feel about it, I personally don't think it paired well with the espresso used. My friend that I was with got the cafe sua da, phin style. Out of the three drinks we tried, the cafe sua da had a heavier, creamier consistency. I'm not sure what "phin" style entails, but the drink had this strong salty flavor that was missing something sweet to cut the saltiness. What actually tasted good was when we drank all three drinks simultaneously at once, because the sesame flavor of the charcoal latte paired well with the saltiness in the cafe sua da, and then the lavender flavor was a nice palette cleanser after the creamy drinks. The baristo had come by to follow up on how I liked the lavender latte, but at that point I realized that perhaps this coffee shop isn't for me since three of their signature drinks failed to wow me. I think Phin Smith is a super cute space, I'm interested in seeing how it might evolve once it's a little more refined. I'm getting the whole artisan feel to it, since the drinks are made right in front of you when you order, etc. however the baristo's novice knowledge on the ingredients broke the illusion of being at a hand crafted cafe to me. Definitely worth trying to see if their drinks are for you, unfortunately being positioned on a street with two other cafes within walking distance, I don't think there's anything that makes me inclined to go to Phin again. read more

I'm shocked I did not try the coffee here until now. The coffee here is oo good especially the coconut coffee. The lines are pretty long during the weekend, but they enforce social distancing which is good. The drinks come out really quickly. Parking is really easy as there is street parking as well as two parking lots. It is fun to walk around the area as well. Definitely love the coconut coffee. I thought the other drinks were ok, and the coconut coffee is really the stand-out drink here. read more

10/10 for service and quality! There is ample parking across from the cafe. When you walk in, you are greeted by several baristas, and you don't pay until after you have tried your drink. They want you to taste the drink first to see if you like it and if you need any adjustments. I like this unique concept and I can tell that they value customer service. Their Vietnamese coffee is super sweet even when I requested for them to go easy on the hazelnut but it had a strong coffee flavor so I was okay with it. I wish that their hours were longer but I'll definitely come back! read more
Yelp Reviews: Quarantine Edition #80 Still solid drinks to last you through the Pandemic. Although it's not the airy study center for college and high school kids it used to be, the drinks at Phin Smith are still solid, with seasonal specialties and new variations on different coffees regularly being added to the menu. Vietnamese Coffee "Phin Style" and Banana Coffee are still my jam, but they have a solid Vanilla Cold Brew and Rose Latte. On top of all that, the ordering process is even easier now... direct line to the register and plenty of space to wait until your order is ready. Ok this place makes bomb ass coffee! The experience was great from start to finish. This was recommended by my cousins who live in the area. Once a barista helps you and takes your order, they are with you from the start to finish of your experience. Since it was my first time there, our barista asked us to take a seat at the coffee bar to ensure that we liked our drinks before paying for them. We ordered the Honeydew match latte, banana coffee, ca phe sua da, and lavender latte. Once the drinks were made, we took a sip of our coffees and they were so good. I got the lavender latte since I've been on a lavender kick lately. My brother got the honeydew matcha which was quite nice. Started off with honeydew tones and ended with matcha. We hung out there for a while drinking our coffees. I noticed there was always a line, but luckily it moved fast. read more

My friend and I got the Blueberry Matcha Latte and the Rose Latte. Both were extremely delicious and not overwhelmingly sweet. The service was quick and easy and we got our drinks within minutes. The day we went was busy and there were lots of people there but it was a fun time and good vibes. There were lots of furniture to sit and study or to socialize with lots of sunlight coming in. I definitely will return to try their other specialty drinks! read more

Amazing service and fragrant, bold coffee, I'm sold! I'd definitely recommend Phin Smith for those coffee lovers. My bf and I got the iced black coffee and vanilla cold brew. They were both good and strong! You can add extra shots here if you don't like your coffee on the sweet side and like the extra kick or let them know to adjust it to your preference. I opted for more shots in mine since the vanilla cold brew was a bit sweeter. We also got the Saigon blend coffee to brew some at home it was about $12 a pop. Can't wait to come back for my next cup of goodness! read more

I truly love Phin Smith!!! Every time I go to LA I try different coffee shops but nothing hits like Phin Smith. I ordered the coconut coffee and it was immaculate. Coffee, boring?!?!?! Not here!!! I gotta give it to these guys, they sure know how to spice up a fresh cup of coffee!!! For someone who doesn't like coffee, I sure changed my tune quickly! Got lucky and found a parking spot right in front! During our recent stay in Anaheim, we needed a caffeine boost before our long day of sight-seeing. They complied w/ covid protocols and had cute interior to match. It was my bf and I's first times here and since I've been on a coconut kick, I knew exactly what I was going to order- the coconut coffee, duh! My bf decided on the avocado coffee w/ an extra shot of espresso. I like the idea of them making your coffee for you and having you taste it before you pay, to ensure it's to your liking. I took one sip and fell in love lol! I adored how both coffees were blended so perfectly- soft, icy mouthfeel without any uneven chunks of ice. The coconut flavor was apparent and the avocado was so smooth. Dare I say one of the top 3 coffees I've ever had?! A must stop when in the area! Can't wait to come back. read more

It depends on what particular drink you are asking about. I personally had their Vietnamese iced coffee and that is made with condensed milk which has a lot of lactose and s considered unsuitable for lactose intolerant.
