I had a lot of high expectations for this place because of all the good reviews I saw, but I think my overall experience was alright. I wouldn't voluntarily come back, but I wouldn't mind trying something else. I got the coconut coffee because I love the flavor of coconut and it was one of the most popular drinks here. It's basically a blended coconut base with coffee added to it. It's good when it melts, but initially you mostly tasted the blended coconut. I think the coconut flavoring was a bit too artificial for my liking, but I finished the drink nonetheless. My friends also thought their drinks were a bit too sweet. I think it was a nice place to try and I really like the interior, but I personally wouldn't come back often. It would be a nice place to study or do some work. Like others said, the ordering system is a bit backwards here. You first order your drink, wait, and then pay for it at the end. With all the hype, I was surprised that it took under half an hour. Phin Smith is a beloved Garden Grove spot which I surprisingly first experienced at their new Las Vegas expansion. However, I couldn't resist dropping by their SoCal flagship with its massive 4.8 Yelp rating since I was in the area this weekend. We had to spend a few minutes waiting for someone to leave the full parking lot in the back (to the west). Despite the farmers market congestion and the line outside, our visit didn't take that long overall since they have a brigade of employees to take care of everyone. They asked whether it was my first time and then told me to make sure to taste my drinks before paying, so I did. I made some interesting choices at Phin Smith Las Vegas, so it was here where I finally tried the large Ca Phe Sua Da ($5.50, 16 oz), traditional style. It's a beast with assertive coffee toward the middle and backend, but the sweetness up front will have you struggling to stop sipping. The L'Americaine ($4.75, 16 oz large size) is basically an Americano and is fairly light overall, but the bitterness is also tame. Lastly, I had to pick up the large Blueberry Matcha Latte ($5.50) per Christy L.'s recommendation. It's sweet and full of blueberry flavor. Just be sure to stir/swirl the drink since a lot of the components tend to settle out.\ WARNING: I found out on the latter drink that requesting less ice results in underfill, a policy which I blame 7 Leaves Cafe for starting. Oh well. The seating area actually had space for us, although we ended up taking the drinks to-go. It wasn't too noisy despite the crowds. The employee who helped me gave me a cardboard drink carrier even before I had the chance to request it. I'll probably end up exploring different coffee shops on subsequent trips to this area because I'm a Yelper, but I highly recommend visiting Phin Smith wherever you can find them. When we moved up to Garden Grove, we did not think we would love it as much as we do. And guess what? Phin Smith is a big, positive factor in that. Living ~5 min away from this little coffee shop is dangerous because we're quite literally here every weekend. Even if the line is long, we will happily wait!! And on weekends, the line is usually a little bit longer, even extending to the outside. But don't worry -- the workers are so fast and get through the line quickly, so always wait!! Haha. I love the vibe inside this place! Lots of tables, a nice couch to sit at if you're lucky, and the workers are always so kind! My personal favorites are the melon bar matcha and the vietnamese iced coffee phin style. SOOOOOOOO DELICIOUS. I will sometime ask for the cream on my melon bar matcha too because man that cream on the viet iced coffee is to die for. My boyfriend loves the green thai tea and the calamantea!! A strawberry blended matcha drink, probably the most basic and over done menu item- But the blended strawberry matcha drink here is just so good. I feel like with most places the drink leans too heavily to strawberry or matcha but here it's just balanced so well. A great place for you to get your coffee if you're in the area. They have indoor and outdoor seating here and the service is really great by everyone. When you order you get your own personal barista to make a drink for you and they make sure you enjoy every drink that is made before you actually pay. That was definitely a top notch service way to make sure everyone has their drinks just the way they like it. They were also very helpful in making sure to explain the drinks that were ordered. I was going to get the Cafe Su Dah which is Vietnamese coffee and my barista said that they had a specialty version called the Phin Smith Cafe Su Dah which comes with sea foam and hazlenut syrup. The hubby and I swung by Phin Smith one Saturday on our way back south to San Diego. I'd been jonesing for a strong Vietnamese coffee and this did not disappoint. Phin Smith knows what they're doing, they have an amazing staff who all seem very efficient at, are on top of orders, and extremely friendly and helpful. I ordered the iced Oahu Joe which had flavors of coconut, macadamia nut, hazelnut and coffee. The guy helping me out added extra hazelnut because it's how he preferred it, which was a hit with me. My husband ordered the classic OG that knocked our socks off. In fact, we ordered two growlers of the original Vietnamese coffee to go. The growlers are 32oz each and are good for up to a week in the fridge. I took one to work and shared it with co-workers and then kept the second growler for myself and the hubby, so we could extend the enjoyment of Phin Smith a little longer. I would highly recommend this place and will definitely add it to the rotation of OC stops moving forward. read more

I'm sure there's plenty of places to get delicious coffee or matcha in Southern California. But this place really caught my attention! I've never had such amazing "mixed" coffee. For instance, their Banana Coffee was just the perfect blend. One flavor didn't overpower each other. I also ordered their Blueberry Matcha -- 10/10, Strawberry Matcha 10/10. I loved how the strawberry was a cream and not purée or syrup. It didn't overpower the matcha itself either, but rather complimented each other so well. The baristas are always super helpful whenever I'm trying to make a choice between menu items and allow me to try my drink so they can make any additional adjustments on the spot. Phin Smith is a coffee/tea shop with a lot of Saigonese/French influence The entire space has a old timey- French vibe, with touches of Vietnam. This is a perfect place to take your drinks on the go, or there are plenty of tables to spend some time at, to study or do some work. The staff is super friendly, and so cute in their old timey- french barista inspired uniforms. They are always quick to make recommendations and always care to ask if it is a first time trying a new beverage. After you've gotten your bev, they always ask if you're pleased with your drink or if they can make any adjustments. If I'm not in love with the drink in hand, I like it. I have never left with a drink I didn't like. I've tried many of their matcha lattes, iced banana coffee, iced peanut butter coffee, which are all very nice but I have 2 favorites. 1, is the Dutch Mocha, it is a blended chocolate coffee, a bit basic but super rich in flavors, the perfect amount of sweetness and bitter. I like that it's not too sweet and tastes more of a darker chocolate. A more fun and unique option is the Coconut Coffee, which is what I get 95% of the time and what they're super known for. It is a blended coconut milk smoothie with shots of espresso poured over- Affogato style. When you sip, the bitterness of the coffee is tamed by the sweet richness from the coconut milk to make the most perfect combination. The flavors are very prominent, without sweetness overpowering them. I mentioned earlier, there may be touches of Vietnam in the shop, but Vietnam's touch in the coffee will punch you. Coffee here is the right amount of STRONG, which I appreciate. Comparing Phin Smith's pricing to their competitors, Phin is actually quite affordable, especially when the quality of their ingredients and excellent service is taken into mind. I admit, I am a beverage goblin and I am going to say that Phim Smith is THE BEST coffee and tea shop I've been to thus far. I've been to quite a few, might I add. SO THAT'S PRETTY HUGE. They currently only have one location and I'm telling you, if you're ever able to end up anywhere near Orange County, Phin Smith is worth the drive. read more

I'm sad that there's only one Phin Smith location, but it makes it all the more worthwhile whenever I come to SoCal. I've frequently sought out this coffee spot back when I was living in the greater OC area. Now that I'm based in the Bay, I still make sure to come here whenever I'm in town because it is That Good and by far my favorite coffee spot. They sell an assortment of different coffees, but my absolute go to is their Vietnamese Iced Coffee. I always get that coffee Phin Style, which adds a hazelnut cream to the top of the drink. Before drinking, I always like swirling my drink to fully mix the cream into the coffee, but the coffee is delicious as is without the cream! Even with the cream inside, the coffee isn't overly sweet - you still taste the richness and smoothness of the coffee. Make sure you drink it early because their coffee is dangerously strong! I also bought their recently new 32 oz Growler. With their growlers, you can fill it either with their Cold Brew or their Vietnamese Iced Coffee, and they make it fresh to order. I naturally got their Vietnamese Iced Coffee (and yes, they do Phin Style with the Growlers!) and they last up to a week when properly stored. Absolutely dangerous (for me!) but I'm happy that I can get my fix for a few days more after visiting. read more

Labor Day Weekend. I was hungover, from the night before so I came here and got some coffee to get me right. The GF suggested this place because she used to live nearby and said it was good. The first thing I notice walking in is that the aesthetics of this place give off a great vibe. You see people studying or working in there with laptops. This place uses the honor system in the sense of you order your drink first and then you go to the register to pay. However, if in the event your drink comes out before you do pay, people can just grab their drinks and go.
