Nothing wrong with Pho 86 from our perspective. Yes, we were going to the other place that recently received a distinguished award, but when we drove up, the establishment was closed for renovation. We looked around and saw the bright neon sign of Pho 86 just on the other side of the busy Brookhurst Street by the side of Stater Bros Market. We walked in an we're immediately greeted with warmth and were comfortably seated where if you looked over the wall, you would see steaming pots of cooking in progress. The menu was rather sparse and the lovely missus wanted those fresh shrimp spring roll. We saw the picture on the wall but it wasn't on the menu. So our #1 son who was raised and schooled in the neighborhood took over and conversed with our waiter in his native tongue. He had a big smile and probably was in awe how a young non-Asian guy could speak and understand so fluently. My order was the medium bowl of the #1 Pho with all the meats. Of course I like bean sprouts and stalks of mint and sliced jalapeños with a squeeze of juicy lime. I took a quick taste of the boiling hot broth and my mood changed from hmmm, to wow.....sweet broth, the slices of steak were rare as they should be and the rice noodles were just the right texture and nested in a rolled ball in the white ceramic bowl....scrumptiously good. The aroma was inviting and I fully enjoyed my Pho. Let's not forget the spring rolls. They came with the fish sauce as requested and were cut into halves and presented on a flat plate. Oh so good and we think it should be written on the menu. Everyone was happy we stopped at Pho 86 and definitely thought it was at least 7 points better than the one on the other side of the street. In need of a brothy lunch we came here to switch gears from the normal pho spot. It's pretty good but just reminds me how much better my fave pho spot is. Ordered: Pho chin gau bo vien: Meat is always good but not as plentiful as it should be ordering a large. The noodles were decent but a tiny undercooked for my taste. Then broth...little under seasoned also for my liking but overall a very satisfying bowl. I had a pho craving that had to be satisfied so I decided to go to Pho 86. I got the pho tai, nam, sach, gan, bo vien (w/tai on the side). The broth was rich, clean, and flavorful. The nam was well cooked so every bite of it was flavorful. The gan was tender yet firm to the bite. The tai meat was cut generously so you can actually taste the sweetness of the beef (coupled with the broth). Their bo vien is top notch. The service is quick and friendly. I noticed they have lots of regular customers there. Addressing each other by first names and the manager knowing what their usual orders are. That must say something in itself. OK THIS PLACE IS GETTING 3 STARS, my reasons.... -the portions are VERY SMALL...I probably could have eaten 3 bowls... -the food was good though -it was cool to see the how the kitchen works, they have transparent glasses where you are able to observe the cooks at work. It really takes about 5 seconds to make it. Grab a scoop of noodles, dip it in the hot water (literally), pour soup in, throw in garnish and meat, VIOLA -service is fast -place is VERY SMALL...I had to sit behind a lady and there was no room to move our chairs, if we had to move our chairs, we had to move our chairs left to right to get out (instead of moving our chairs back -they got our order wrong the place is guud, but other than that, this place was ok. A newly remodeled interior doesn't change the way I feel about this place. I love their pho. Simple as that. Their beef broth is light and a lot less greasy than most pho places in the area. This is one place I don't feel guilty when I see the bottom of my bowl. The service is fast, the food comes out even faster, and I never leave here disappointed. I'm a fan. I have a few go-to pho spots and this is one of them. The broth is really good compared to some other places in OC and you should order the side of beef in a bowl. I'm not sure what it's called in Vietnamese but it's supposed to add more flavor to your soup. I always get the Pho Tai with a side of onions drenched in vinegar. YUM. read more

This review is post renovation. MUCH improved dining room, now modern, airy, and cleaner. Service is the short Vietnamese style. One order was messed up but they got it fixed with no fuss, so that's a plus. Inexplicably, no dipping dishes at the tables and they don't bring them to you automatically either... You have to ask for them. Pho flavor was good. Tendon was tender. Rare beef was a little tough. Brisket was ok. Too much noodle for my liking. Veggies were fresh. The big problem...bone fragments in my soup that caused an unpleasant CRUNCH while I was happily munching away. I may give it another try later. I rate this above average. I hate to skewer a restaurant because I really think they're trying but the food here is just bad. Came on a Sunday morning around lunch time. The restaurant just cleared out and there were empty plates on all tables. Usually good sign if a restaurant is crowded. We managed to find the only clean table all the way in the back. I ordered a regular sized bowl with sliced brisket, fatty brisket, tendon, and flank. They brought out the wrong order the first time. I asked the server to please double check my order and was told by another worker that she was new here, and to excuse her mistake. Not a big deal. A short while later, my correct order was brought out. The portions were extremely small for a "regular" at $8 a bowl. Broth was the blandest I've ever had. Meat portions were skimpy. Literally no flavor in this thing at all. The only redeeming factor was the broth was boiling hot. I'm not sure where all the great reviews are coming from. perhaps it's from people unfamiliar with pho. For a great bowl, try 79 right across the street. It's worth the wait. read more

One of my go to pho places. I haven't been here recently, but they remodeled! It looks very clean and joyful? The restaurant is a bit brighter and a bit more modern you can say. This place is usually packed, but today i came in at the right moment, full tables except this one couple that just left, so score! got a booth seat and people started coming in. On with the food, what I usually get at any pho place is the Pho Tai Bo Vien (Rare/Raw Beef with Beef Balls) The noodles are just made right, not over cooked and bloated, nor is under cooked. Since the broth is hot the beef does get cooked quite fast, if you don't like that order it on the side. The beef balls were good, not the best I've tried but its good enough with the Tai (raw/rare beef)/ The broth has some flavor in my opinion. I enjoy it. I guess some people are used to eating at the late pho places that pack their broths with MSG or some sorts. If people think its bland, there's fish sauce on the table, please use it gradually til you get the flavor you're looking for or those who pack alot of hoisin/sriracha in the broths, you can use that too. The Veggies (Bean sprout, limes, jalapenos, and mixed leafy greens) are clean, not rotting and turning brown. 5 Stars -- As you can see with all of my Yelp Check-Ins here, this is my family's favorite Pho Restaurant. I've frequented this place at least 3 times a month since I was a child and now as a married woman with my own rugrats in tow. They're specialty here is Beef Pho, which is the only thing they serve, so don't try asking for Chicken or Shrimp or Vegan. I always order the small Dac Biet aka Special, which comes with all sorts of beef cuts and innards. Due to my gestational diabetes, I share all my rice noodles with my 2 kids and eat the protein with bean sprouts. My Hubby loves the large Dac Biet with a side of Thit Tai Bam aka Rare Chopped Beef Steak Slices and Chen Tiet aka Beef Blood Bowl. Service here is fast and impeccable, so quick that it only takes 30 minutes of our time to eat breakfast here. read more

My parents are regulars here and they always come here when they crave for pho. I came here with my mom last night and the owners are super friendly. They're always interacting with the regular customers and always keeping up a conversation. Their pho is really good and the broth has flavor unlike some other pho restaurants. I usually order the rare beef pho but for some reason my mom convinced me to order the rare beef with cooked brisket. I shouldn't have done that! There was too much fat on the cooked brisket and they barely give you any rare beef. I was so sad! I'm going to stick with the rare beef from now on. I love this pho place and will be back! I first came here with a friend, and I am Hooked! I just get the filet but beef..... and the owner remembers me. What's up!

The food I ordered was heading my way just out of my peripheral vision and before it hit the table I thought I saw a Beef Bowl instead of the Pho I ordered (This is, Pho....?). It jolted me to full alert as I was confused for a split second as to what I saw. What actually was inside the bowl was barely visible from behind a thick pile of steam rising from the piping hot soup, and I was momentarily dazed by what steam does best (the soothing effect it has, at least to me). I tried to decide if I ordered the right thing (Did I accidentally ask for super piping hot? was that even an option? Think, think....). The rapidly rising steam quickly dissipated to a slow burn when I was out of the daze and what I observed was a Pho inside a round bowl similar to ones used for Beef Bowl (All bowls are round? Yea but, this, this one was Beef Bowl round). What initially appeared to be large strips of beef on top were, large strips of beef, inside a bowl of Pho..., huh. It must have been all the white onion strips surrounding the beef that made it look like something else. The beef strips were some of the freshest looking beef I've seen on a Pho, it screamed quality and tenderness (Yea!). Thankfully they didn't come immersed in soup already precooked. And chewing on this beef in rare state was a nice memorable experience; chewing it together with noodles and sips of soup in between was satisfying (More on sips of soup later). With all the hype about its beef I just mentioned, the soup was the main event in my mind however. The soup reminded me of good vegetables, herbs and bones stock, Vietnamese style. A soup with good broth base is the best I can describe it. It was on the light side but had a pleasant clean aftertaste. In my mind, someone here boldly decided how he or she wants it done and stuck to it, for that I think it's very cool. Did I run into a great Pho? Yes and no. It's a great Pho, no doubt about it. But straight to the point and this may be just nit picking on my part. The soup for whatever reason didn't compliment the beef. Meaning I liked how the beef was prepared so I can enjoy its rare/medium rare state but the soup was an entity of its own in my mouth when the beef was present, it was strangely void of, um, teamwork between the two, both were elites but didn't belong in the same room sort of speak. Sips of the soup while chewing on beef was satisfying as I mentioned above but I wished the soup was a little deeper in flavor to complement the beef. Having said that, I think it's probably a matter of personal preference how rich/light/deep the flavor is, e.g. some like the Otafuku's hand made Soba noodles (Raved about in LA Times once), others not so crazy about them (Um, that includes me..., for the price no). Beef killed soup's strong point (I'm exaggerating here) by making it seem lighter, milder than it is. And soup killed beef by drowning out its beefy flavor. What's that? I've been in too many meetings were I observed power struggles take place? That I have but what does that have anything to do with..., wait a minute... Glad I didn't listen to the reviews. Oh, that broth. So delicious. Make your own combo, is my suggestion. I'd say lean and fatty brisket and crunchy and/or regular flank. Flank makes heartier broth, in my opinion. You may need somewhat fluent in Viet pronunciation because I embarrassed myself a bit in front my server. But she was kind and patient about it. I always try. The younger server understood everything, but we switched. You can always say a number, but I chose combo, so... Still doable. Another pho restaraunt with another number after it. This one happens to be 86. They have two locations. This one is the "OG" location. Tucked in the corner on the Stater Brother's shopping center, it looked a little rough from the outside with a bunch of tough looking dudes standing out front. But really no big deal. This place is a hardcore Little Siagon place and definitely not for newbies. The inside is well worn and beaten up but just clean enough. A little troubling to see flys buzzing around in here. This place was packed when I came in for lunch. One nice thing is you can see into the kitchen and see all the pots cooking. The service was typical of Little Siagon. The Vietnamese coffee, cafe sua da, was well done. The pho tai was pretty good too. I was not blown away with the broth like others. The broth was light and lightly seasoned. Overall a decent pho. The price was $7.75 for pho and coffee. Seems about average. Overall, it was OK but the flies did concern me. Do not bring unintiated here. read more

This restaurant is horrible I went there to eat a vegetable egg roll and they were cold/raw you can even see the frost on them. I only took a bite and spit it out. When I went to tell them that I can't eat this they told me I still had to pay for them no matter what. When I told them I will not they did not let me go and called the police saying I did not want to pay and was being difficult. The owner even wanted to lock me inside. read more

The workers completely ignore you and as I stood in line to pay for my food, they ignored me and let three other men behind me pay instead. So many pho choices in Little Saigon, how could I end up in a location I haven't been to before? Because some of us are loyal and don't want to risk going some place that might be bad. Yes there's such a thing as bad Pho (shudder). Parking may be a little tough but fortunately there's some parking in the back on the far right too. It's not crazy crowded, and we went on Christmas day too when everyone was packed with a 1-2 hour wait (INSANE), so maybe it's an omen that this place had almost no wait on Christmas day -- but we were pleasantly surprised. It's simple if you want the best go to a place the specializes in one thing. Pho 86 does exactly that. The broth is out of this world delicious and I always ask for the thicker fresh noodle which accompanies the fatty beef brisket so well. Not to mention they are very friendly and nice and is great to bring our little ones there to enjoy the wonderful slurping delight. Not gonna lie to you, even though I'm giving them a 3-Star review I still go there sometimes. They put too much MSG in their broth. Gives me chest pain so I only eat the noodles and meat. Soo i am a little bias with this review, as I have been a long time visitor. On a recent visit I am taken on tour, of what a consistent everyday bowl of pho should taste like: quality. On 10/10/2020, when I paid for a bowl of pho, the cashier told me next time do not take the bowl of pho to eat in my car. My intention was to eat on the table outside near the entrance on the side walk but several customers took the masks off as soon as they exit. Due to COVID-19, I ate in my car instead. Several weeks earlier the owner agreed to allow me to eat in my car. The server gave me the bowl of pho on a small rectangular tray while I waited in my car. Now Pho 86 changed their policy. Located by stater bros in westminster this restuarant serves very authentic pho. I usually order the pho tai. Ive been dining here for a long time and id say nobody makes a better broth. The restaurant is small but the pho is definitely big on flavor. Parking can be a bit challenging with so many other businesses sharing the same lot. But overall, that doesnt stop me drom visiting this place. read more
