As a long time patron of Pho 99, I've watched it crumble from a small market/restaurant combo, which although not classy, wasn't as run down as I found it on a recent visit. There are two front doors which is confusing as the main door is the one on the far north end of the building. I came in the wrong one and had to walk through the dining area to the counter where the sole server, a serious senior man told me to sit wherever I wanted. As I sat I noticed that the table was quite high for the bench seats. Later that made it a bit awkward to eat. I ordered a combo ramen which was served in a very large bowl. It was loaded with a very good broth, herbs, veggies, noodles and meats. A quality pho product from the kitchen. I had also ordered a fresh squeezed lime juice with my lunch. I did not arrive at my table until I was nearly done with my Pho. It's not as if I had ordered it as a dessert, but it came that late. I really loved the pho. But the old guy who runs the place just doesn't have his heart in it anymore. Too bad a young person can't take it over and ease him into retirement. As a senior myself I can empathize. Very much a hole in the wall kind of place. Service was kind of slow considering there were only 3 other people in the entire restaurant, but the pork and shrimp fried rice dishes were quite good. We also got a to-go order of curry and chicken fried rice for some friends and I think they liked their dishes as well. Pho shop in West Valley City. Mid-sized space. Not very busy during a weeknight. There is what looks like a grocery store attached to the restaurant and that's where the restrooms are. I think the owners use that space for storage. There was one old guy serving food and manning the register. Water is served in plastic cups that says "Slurpee" on them. Got two of their phos with all the meats, and each is less than $9. The pho tasted authentic. The soup, the noodles, and the meat all tasted like they are supposed to taste. The serving size is pretty good, and there is plenty of meat in each bowl. Overall, this is a good place to go if you want a bowl of good pho for the cheap, and you don't mind the lack of decor or service. read more

Man I miss the days when you could get a bowl of pho here for $7.50. Although their food seemed bland and not all that flavorful, their prices made this place competitive. I expected a price increase post-COVID. Maybe $9.50 or $10.50. But I just went in for the 20th time today for lunch and they're $12.50-$12.75 a bowl. The quality of the food hasn't increased, the same old place looks outdated, and I've had more flavorful pho in other areas nearby. I also asked for a meat replacement and I was charged $3 for it. They didn't tell me it would be extra. There are also cockroaches in the kitchen and dining area. I've had one crawl on my table a couple years back. Came here because I've heard so much about it. There are multiple entrances and the place looks like it once was a grocery store, or had a section of groceries, but got converted to a restaurant. I went there a little bit after lunch rush hour and there was only one person eating there. I didn't really sit in and ate, but just ordered take out. Their menu wasn't that large, it was the typical Vietnamese restaurant menu size. They have everything ranging from their soup noodles to their rice dishes. I decided to order one of the safest dish I can think of, the bum bo hue. The price wasn't bad, it was like $7-8. When I got my order, they didn't do the usual Saran Wrap around the soup to prevent spillage so I had to drive really careful. Their noodles was in a Chinese box take out, and the veggie was in a plastic box. Now for the food...oh how disappointed I was with it. Here is the good part...the soup was great, it had enough of a spicy kick to it. The veggies was nice and fresh. Here is the things I had problems with: 1. The noodles was not even cooked properly. It was super hard and crunchy. I think the lady only soaked it in water to soften it and never actually cooked it. I'm wondering if she thought the soup broth was suppose to cook it, but the broth wasn't even hot enough to cook anything. 2. The meat was super over cooked. Usually ordering stuff with beef slices, the beef slice is cut thinly and given raw so the soup broth cooks it. Well again the broth wasn't hot enough, but I guess it doesn't matter cause the beef cake cooked. 3. They over fill the Togo container. There was no room in that soup container for me to add anything. I had to go to the kitchen sink and pour some of the broth down so I had room to add all my other things without the over spillage happening. I never had much of a great experience here, and this was only take out...probably won't return. I rather drive a bit further and go to gossip or pho Cali to get my pho fix. read more

On our last night in Salt Lake City, Hubby and I wanted pho, and we found Pho 99 on Yelp. This restaurant is located in a strip shopping center that looked worn from the outside. The inside of this restaurant was really old and dingy... to a point that Hubby almost walked out. There was one person who came out to "greet" us. He was not friendly and rude. We both had grilled pork vermicelli, which was actually pretty good. Faucet water with no ice was served in old 7-11 slurpee cups. The guy never checked on us, and we had to go to the counter to pay ourselves. $27.00 for two vermicelli, terrible service, and sketchy atmosphere. OK, if you can get over the aesthetic this place is great. I've been here years ago, and nothing has changed apparently. Don't expect anything fancy, the decor is still stuck in the 70s along with all of the benches and flooring. Pho was great though, came out very hot and the broth was memorable. It had that nice layer of fat that coats your lips after slurping your spoon. Utensils were clean, staff was nice. I didn't see any cockroaches as previous reviewers mentioned. I saw staff clean each table thoroughly after parties left. The only thing that might make this place appear dirty, is that it is definitely an older ambiance. So I'm all about supporting local small businesses, but when I come to a place that basically tells me they won't invest profits back into their own business, it's a red flag. I came here with a co-worker since it appeared to have decent reviews (for the most part) and realized we were the only customers--two more parties came in by the end of our meal. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue and Spring Roll. The Bun Bo had the spiciness that I wanted, but that's all it had going. The soup was bland, the meat was so chewy, and my mouth felt coated in a heavy layer of oil. The Spring Roll had poor quality ingredients, lacked key ingredients to make it have that fresh "spring" flavor. If Subway made Spring Rolls, I'd imagine this to be the result. I really wanted this place to be good, but everything about it turned me off, especially the water. I didn't drink a drop of the water--not that I saw anything wrong with the water itself. The ice water tasted like dirty dish water. That was a really bad first impression, especially considering that our coffees and soups are made using the same water. I am unsure whether it is psychological, but everything tastes like dirty dishes after drinking the ice water. We eat Vietnamese often and ordered our usual right away. We waited for over 20 minutes for our gi cun to arrive. There was only one other table so we weren't sure why service was so poor. My partner announced that he's never before had bad summer rolls. He says they are worse than the bathroom at Panda Express. I haven't been to any of those, so I can't report about that but they were not edible. The sauce was goopy, lumpy, and crusted on the sides of the cup as if it were microwaved. The "pork" was more like imitation crab meat. They don't prepare the drip coffee table side, which was disappointing. With the whole dishwater problem, it was more like janitor juice anyway. Then there was the pho. The noodles were not freshly prepared and therefore stuck together in a giant clump. This resulted in us overloaded with three typical servings of noodles in each bowl. The broth seems to conceal the janitor juice quite well, but the adhered clump of vermicelli was a single unit that prevented access. Perhaps it was better this way. Nothing about this experience was positive. There is decent pho in Utah, but you won't find it at this place. All I can assume is that the positive reviewers here are representative of the typical Utahrds that frequent the many chain restaurants around town. read more

I always get the #14 combination beef Pho which has all the different cuts of beef including tripe and meatball. The broth is really good. Portion size is quite generous for the price. I want to say that if you don't have a hearty appetite you'll likely not be able to finish the Pho. I've only seen 3 workers here, the duo husband-and-wife owners and an older woman who helps in the kitchen and brings out food. I've seen the son on occasion, but he usually just directs me where to sit. The wife is very nice and soft spoken and she usually takes my order. If you come often enough, she'll likely remember your order if you are consistent. They always bring me a glass of ice water before I even order, but maybe because I've been here often enough they know I ONLY want ice water. Ambiance -wise, it's kind of a rundown joint, but really, I'm just there for the food, I could care less. It does literally feel like a Pho restaurant in Vietnam that you see on those travel shows like No Reservations or Bizarre Foods. Food is good enough that you are willing to overlook other details. I think as long as there's a roof over my head while I'm eating, and the AC is cranking on a hot day, I'm happy with the environment. There is a TV which is tuned to local news or daytime soaps. I don't get why people keep posting to the listing for the wrong address. I've contacted yelp multiple times to fix the address on the other listing or merge the two but they never do. I'm a fan. Their Pho tastes a little less flavorful than some other Pho places (Pho Saigon) but at least it tastes like it has less MSG. Their Pho Tai (steak) and Ga (chicken) are both pretty good. One thing sets Pho 99 apart from all the other Vietnamese joints in Salt Lake City: it was open until 9, while all the others close at 8 or 8:30. Trying to introduce my very white, Texan friend to the magic that is a huge bowl of pho and convince him that it is indeed the best food-induced hangover cure, you can imagine my growing desperation as I called restaurant after restaurant only to find that they closed in 15 minutes. Not Pho 99! Some reviewers condemn the place because of its run-down appearance and the slurpee cups; to be sure, you're not walking into some bougie, hip, Asian-fusion place with modernist furniture and trendy decor. What you're getting instead is what I like to think as a *very* Asian restaurant. By this, I mean they (seems to be a family-run restaurant) care very little about the presentation because they make some bomb-ass pho -- it's all very practical: buy a cheap building (probably used to be a loan office or something lol) and some secondhand furniture, pick up some cups being tossed for newer ones at a 7/11, and focus on cooking up that good good. If you can get past that, the place is certainly more than clean enough to eat at. Now the important part: the pho! I've been to too many Vietnamese places that don't do it right -- the broth is sour, the noodles clump together, not enough meat, etc. Not to worry, Pho 99 serves up a great bowl. It's been a couple years since my first visit here. I wish I had returned sooner and more often because their food have definitely improved by great measures. The exterior is anything but fancy. Old brick walls and a white sign with "Pho 99" written in red. The interior doesn't tell you otherwise. There's a fresh water fish tank that you can not miss when entering the place and there wasn't much else for decoration. Plain and simple and I actually enjoyed the simplicity. It reminds me of most restaurants in Vietnam, same hole in the wall feel and nice smell of pho broth as you enter the place. They have all the condiments, silverware and paper napkin dispensers right at your table so it's a big plus. And for those who didn't know, that's how restaurants in Vietnam do their business; it's convenient for the owner and consumers alike. The menu is very simple and straight forward with only the most popular Vietnamese dishes. Around 40 - 50 choices to choose from. When it comes to bang for your buck, Pho 99 is a champion. The pho only comes in 1 size here and in terms of noodles and meat, it's considered a large at most other places...at under $7. Wow. They also give you the option of additional meat, meatballs, and noodles for extra. As always, I ordered the special pho (pho dac biet), and my friends both got the Bun Bo Hue's. Our food took a good 10 minutes to arrive. They were hot and freshly prepared. The Pho broth was really good here, comparable to Asia Palace. It was slightly oily but that fatty taste went away after two or three spoonfuls so I can't really complain. The meat came in fresh and plentiful amount, nicely cooked. The flank was a bit fattier than what I am used to but it was a nice change to my surprise. The noodles had a nice chew to it and was very well cooked. Their garnishing plate came with your usual pho veggies that were fresh and in generous amounts, but no culantro. Can't complain about no culantro at this price though. Overall, we really enjoyed our food and was even more happy with the price. We paid less than $20 altogether for three fulfilling bowls of noodles. What a steal!! The food quality here is a solid 4 stars. But at the insanely low price that they charge, they are definitely worthy of a 5 stars. Highly recommended. read more

This is a total mom and pop joint with an attached market. I love it. The pho is great, full of noodles and meat. They have basil!!! This is the cheapest pho in Utah at $5.75, thats nuts! Place looks dingy from the outside but don't let the fancy chandeliers other places have fool you. Inside is clean with all the condiments you want on the tables. Only complaint i have is that the place is cold when you first walk in and some of the meats were fatty but for the price, i can live with that. read more
