After discovering a pho restaurant down the street had shut down, my party of two decided to strike north on Old Denton and dine at Pho Bistro. I found their pho sadly lacking in the beefy flavor that is distinctive of this soup. While their Pho Bistro Dac Biet was nicely loaded with all the meats, I still couldn't reconcile with the flavorless broth which required a heavy dose of sauces to liven up. Maybe they should have added a little more grease? The meatballs were equally disappointing, both in appetizer form and in the pho, they tasted like dried unseasoned stuffing. The garnish of basil, sprouts and peppers accompanying my pho was problematic: the basil looked frost-bitten, old and shriveled (like somebody in the kitchen had decided to recycle some herbs from the trash bin) and the peppers were noticeably absent of heat. I requested some spicier jalapenos from a server; whereupon I was directed to partake of the bottled sriracha and chili garlic sauce on the table. One strike. Made of the same bland food was the pork spring rolls. While I appreciated that it was freshly made, again I found the pork content uninteresting (wish it had been grilled instead). I also missed the nuoc mam chan style sauce or even a peanut sauce. What we received was some tasteless dip that looked like watered down sweet and sour sauce. The things they do to cater to an American palate? Too bad, another strike. Pho Bistro did better with the chicken wing--Asian Wings--appetizer. Tossed in a mild fishy sauce and garnished with sauteed onions and jalapeno peppers, I found that this was the best dish of the evening, and a worthy addition to anybody's tailgating menu. It made me wish I had chosen something from the rice or stir fried menu or special menu instead of pho. I didn't experience any pacing issues in the kitchen; nor did I observe any "family run" attitudes that other Yelpers mentioned. During my visit, the dining space appeared to have several tables fully populated. However, Pho Bistro would not be my destination for memorable pho noodle soup; if I were minded to give them another try, I would explore the rest of the menu. read more

I've been a customer here off and on for 6 years. Today I decided to come back to satisfy my craving, but upon walking in there was a not so welcomed odor. Not sure what it was from. It really surprises me that this place is still in business when the girls of the family look so unhappy and miserable to work here. I have been eating here since I moved to Carrollton over 10 years ago. The same family runs the place and the food has always been consistently good. I try to make a lunch stop at least once a week when I am in town. I am nut a fan of Pho because I don't care for cilantro, but I know their Pho is very popular. My favorites are the BBQ pork chops, beef cubes with rice and the vermicelli dishes. Definitely the best Vietnamese in the DFW area. read more

The restaurant hits you with a weird tobacco/incense odor when you walk in. The utensils and condiment bottles stored on the table were dirty and crusted with food particles. I almost left because of this but was in a rush to eat and decided to overlook that for now and try the food. I had the pho ga (chicken). It was good, but nothing to rave about. Average bowl of pho. We sat down and the manager proceeded to play a kids video on repeat directly behind me on loud the entire we ate. The staff was rather rude, then after I asked if I could change the selection of my bubble tea because the one I asked for tasted like chalk. The waitress said "well that's the one you ordered" & refused to let me have something different. The food was mediocre at best & my vermicelli had pieces of wood in the noodles. The restaurant was hot & the staff didn't come by once to check on us, we had to get up and ask for anything we needed. Every time I walked up to the counter to ask for something I was ignored for at least 60seconds before getting helped because she was playing with her child. This was my first pho-dining experience, and it was quite a positive one. After being seated, I asked for a recommendation on bubble tea. They were out of tapioca pearls, but I was told that they had some type of jelly cubes, which I've never tried. I ordered the mango tea with the cubes. It was extremely sweet, but not excessively so. It paired well with the jelly, which had a slightly firmer consistency than Jell-O. After perusing the enormous menu and being unable to make a decision, we asked our waitress for some recommendations. She was very friendly and helpful, though we ultimately ended up choosing something different. I got the pho special (I forget what it was called, but it was the top of the list) with five or six different cuts of beef; she ordered the Happy Family (which, I believe, is a Chinese dish). I also got an order of pork spring rolls to start. The spring rolls arrived in a matter of minutes, and they were quite good. The crispness was absolutely perfect, the filling nice and fresh-tasting. My complaint is that I hardly noticed the pork (though the flavor was still good), and the watery, odorless dipping sauce they came with (not sure what it was) didn't seem to add much. That said, it certainly didn't take away. I would definitely order these again. Our main dishes arrived incredibly quickly, especially considering that there were a decent number of diners there with us - we had everything we ordered on the table within 15 minutes of arriving, including time spent deliberating what to pick from the menu. I was astounded at the size of the bowl of pho (it looked like it could hold about half a gallon), and my girlfriend's dish came out sizzling on a skillet shaped like a cow (a charming touch, I thought). I was also provided an enormous helping of sprouts, cilantro, a lime slice, and some basil and fresh-sliced jalapenos to add into the pho. The taste was very good. I admittedly have no basis of comparison, but it was a pleasant first pho experience for me. The different meat types (including meatballs) had a fairly indiscernible flavor and didn't appear to be of very high quality, but for the price I was hardly expecting prime cuts. The broth had a slightly sweet flavor to it, which I found interesting, but I added a generous portion of chili paste and sriracha to give it an extra kick. The side add-ins went well with the dish - I enjoyed the crunch of the bean sprouts, and (contrary to what another reviewer mentioned) I found the jalapenos to be sufficiently spicy. The service was friendly and helpful, but frankly a bit inattentive. Nobody came to check on how our food was or if we needed anything (we didn't), though my girlfriend had her tea refilled very promptly without having to ask. That really wasn't a problem for us, as we prefer to enjoy our food in peace - but if you are the type who expects your waiters to hover over you while you dine, you'll be disappointed. We weren't. All in all, a positive experience and an incredible value - two drinks, an appetizer, and two tasty and filling entrees for under $25. Sometimes when you lose passion for the business/food, it suffers a horrible death. The chicken wings that used to be so full of flavor, now taste bland and the pieces of wings look hacked up, many still have bits of feather attached to it. The vermicelli comes out warm with 5 little measly pieces of meat, no cucumber or fresh herbs that accentuates and defines the wonderful Vietnamese cuisine. The owners tend to have a family gathering there, at least almost every time I've been there; the matriarch of the family talks really loud and they let their toddler kid run around the restaurant. Luckily across the street is a new restaurant China cafe and pho, who has passion and you can tell from your first bite. For now at least. read more

The beef pho soup is absolutely superb and very hot. I really love their food here and the pho is incredibly therapeutic when one has a cold or flu-like symptoms. Although this is a family-owned place, sadly, I found the older family members unfriendly and rude. While am sure that they speak English, nothing says "Don't come back here" like not smiling when I pay my bill, ignoring me and providing no eye contact as I say hello, and never asking "how was everything? - a simple request that most restaurants honor. It's about volume here, getting people in and out - with nary a care about what people think. To me, a restaurant is not always just about food - it's also about treating customers like they are king. This family, especially their cute little older daughter, could really learn something about being warm and cordial, instead of talking on the phone and ignoring customers as they are checking out. How rude! Not to mention they have multiple TV sets for customers to watch as they wait, yet they play their own music so loud that no one can hear the TV sets anyway. Ok, so I have now been to this place on 3 different occassions. All 3 times, the customer service has been pathetic. The girls behind the counter give no eye contact, eat while taking your money, and just point to pick up your own food (usually sitting at one of the tables). No kind of Thank You, or anything. Family Owned and operated with great food and friendly atmosphere. They remember their repeat customers and always strive to make everyone happy. This is my favorite Pho place in Carrollton. The broth is quite tasty and they are generous with their servings even if you get it to-go. I personally like the Pho with the round eye steak best of all. The broth is delicate yet flavorful and some of the best I have had in the DFW area. I haven't tried a ton of other things on their menu , but in the summer I like getting the Bun instead because it is cool and refreshing. The grilled sliced pork has a really delicious smoky sweet flavor. In addition, to this my husband absolutely loves the Pepper Chicken Wings and even though I am not a big wing fan I have to say they are some of the best I have ever had. So good in fact that one time we got them three days in a row. They deep fry the wings until they are super crispy (and they remain that way even when you take them home) and then they are covered in crushed red pepper and onion. Micheal is a joy to talk to, he is the host, server, cashier and will even fix your phone if that is a service you need. I've been eating at this place for almost 5 years. I'm no regular but I eat here at least once a month. I LOVE the pho and I've never experienced a lack in service. This review is about the service primarily. I typically order take-out for my family of 5 on the way home from work. We usually spend under $30 for the whole family, so it's pretty reasonable as far as an easy dinner at home. Their pho broth is really aromatic, and is my favorite in the Carrollton area. I also like their shrimp spring rolls a lot. They've always been really friendly when I order and pick up. Today, we decided to eat in with the whole family. My son ordered off the "Chinese" part of the menu, and if his dish was any indication (Orange Chicken) of that part of the menu, I would suggest avoiding the "Chinese" dishes. The sauce was more of a brown sauce, with barely a hint of orange. There was no orange peel, as is typical in the dish. We told the waitress he didn't like the dish. She looked at us blankly. My husband asked if we could order him something else, and she continued to look at us blankly (it was not a language/communication issue -she understood). He asked if we could trade it for something he liked, and she told us whatever we order, we have to pay for, apparently regardless of the taste, quality, etc. My husband and I decided to share our entrees with our not-very-happy teenager, and while swatting away a gnat that was buzzing around our table, got ready to leave. We paid for the food, but I told my husband we won't be back. It's really sad, because I have gone here for more than 10 years, and I prefer to frequent local, family-owned restaurants. read more

When this place first opened, I went often. Then the waitress who is also the daughter of the place got rude and I have never been back since. THe pho is the worst. It tastes like chicken broth with seasoning. The noodle dishes were good and the Bun Bo Hue tastes like Pho with chili pepper in it. This place is catered to non Vietnamese customers who are not as picky as to how authentic the food is. However, the service is what turns me off. If you want excellent Vietnamese, go up Frankford to Josey and try Bon Mua. THere you find excellent Pho and everything else on the menu is delicious plus awesome Thai tea with bubbles and very good service. read more

I have been coming to Pho Bistro since they opened, and have made several dozen trips each year. Every time I walk in the door, I am greeted quickly and politely. The food is competitively priced and has been tasty each and every time I order. It is a model of consistency; if you find a dish you like, you can take it to the bank it will be that good the next time you come. The proprietor is friendly, accomodating, and appreciative of your business, and the girls do their best to make you feel at home.
