Year after year this place wins Best of Chico in the Pho category. Year after year I try it, and now, I am finally satisfied that I just don't like it. Today I had the 'house special' which is a bowl of noodles in broth with beef, brisket and meat balls. There are no options with tripe or tendon. The broth was sweet for some reason. The reason being obvious; that they put sugar in what is supposed to be a savory broth. Otherwise it was quite bland. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the broth is made in minutes from prepackaged beef broth, water and sugar only. It's a restaraunt that caters to rural Americans who have never had the pleasure or inclination to seek out more authentic Vietnamese cuisine. I felt patronized and embarrassed as a customer who the staff must believe dislikes all seasonings minus sugar and salt. Judging by its popularity, for most patrons, they may be right (which is even more embarrassing). It's a shame that their aren't any places in town that take the time to prepare pho broth in the traditional, time consuming fashion. Vietnam Bistro gets closest IMO. 1 star above the minimum due to the delicious, deep fried and carby treat that are their egg rolls. read more

Recently tried this place, we ordered the shrimp spring rolls, pho and some Thai fried rice, the pho was delicious, the only thing is that I wish they would have added some basil, and jalapeños along with the bean sprouts. The rice was also good. The spring roll needed more shrimp or something else, it felt like I was eating a roll of lettuce only so maybe add more shrimp or some chicken? I've been here twice because I was in town for business. I can't really compare this to other pho places in Chico, because I think this is the only one in Chico! That said, coming from the Sacramento area I suppose I am a bit more spoiled with more choices of Vietnamese restaurants. This one - in my book - is just A-OK. I've had the grilled pork with vermicelli rice noodles, and then I had the grilled version over rice. The pork is pretty thin, much thinner than what I'm used to, and about 25% was fatty and I couldn't eat it. When I order grilled pork in a Vietnamese restaurant, I'm used to getting a pretty thick cut, marinated enough to absorb those wonderful flavorings and grilled to the point of not being "crispy" but tender and a hint of charbroiled flavor. It was very packed for weekday lunchtime! It must be the regular eating spot for lots of workers. On the plus side, the prices are very reasonable. You can't beat them. read more

First time trying pho since moving to Chico from the Bay Area. Had a lovely experience at pho c&c. Food came out very quickly despite being somewhat busy during the afternoon. I ordered chicken pho and the pork eggrolls. Broth was very pleasant and tasty, chicken was quality and not rubbery or chewy. Pho C&C Vietnamese Noodles and Grill The only Vietnamese restaurant in Chico is located on Cohasset Road in the La Dolce Piazza. In case you don't know what Vietnamese food is, it is similar to Chinese food with its fried egg rolls and pot stickers except for the noodle soups which come in small or regular sized bowls and are a meal in itself. There is the Super Bowl which has shrimp, fish balls and steak in a hearty broth served with noodles for $6.95. You can also make your own noodle bowl with the small Plain Noodle Bowl for $2.75 and add beef meat balls or shrimp for a $1.00--it's a pretty good meal for a total of $3.75. Trying this place for the first time today. Had the egg rolls and the special combo pho with a Thai iced tea. Devoured it all up. It was slow when we came in, but it was right before time of typical lunch rushes. The staff are friendly and personable. Prices are reasonable. Each item is 10$ or less. Apparently the family that owns the place will be closing the restaurant for a week (sept 21-29, 2019) but will be open for business when they get back. Can't wait to bring friends to this place. NO Stars for the food and portion size +1 Star for the service I couldnt give it 1 star because the servers were very attentive to our needs. They were nice and friendly. The food on the other hand was horrendously bland and sweet. I like to think that I know what good pho tastes like since I ate it every weekend growing up (Pho is my dad's fav food so he used to drag us out every Saturday to eat with him) and I can safely say that this has to rank as one of the worst "pho" I've ever had. Now I put that in parenthesis because I don't even know if you could call it "pho." There were 5 of us that day, myself, my dad, uncle, brother and 5 year old niece. We all ordered the special pho ($6.99) which has all of the different meats minus the seafood. We sat back and waited and within 5-10 mins our food came out. When it did, all of us were shocked at the size of their largest bowl. Seriously, my niece could probably finish that bowl by herself. I immediately do my pre-meal taste to see if it needs any hoisin and sriracha and I was very suprised by the taste. What this broth lacked was the "pho" taste that makes it pho. Instead it tasted like sweet chicken broth. Next I inspected my bowl to find what seemed to be miniature pieces of meat. None of the pieces of meat were larger than say a 1/2 dollar piece. The meat was really dry (even in the broth) and tough to eat. There was also no tendon or tripe!! Sad. For 7 bux, i expected more. read more

As a native San Josean, i know my pho. I can sniff out every single ingredient in a bowl, and tell what is missing and what shortcuts are made. That said, I was extremely disappointed. The bowl was small for a "large"- that's an outrage for a San Josean. The broth lacked onions, had a pinch too much cinnamon and seemed closely similar to an out of can chicken broth. Meat servings were sparse as well. When they brought out the bean sprouts and basil, the basil was splotchy- a sign for not being fresh. To add insult to injury, the hoi sin sauce seemed watery, soy sauce was a condiment and the quinessential chili garlic paste and sliced jalapenos were no where to be found. the normalities were lacking- #1 wasn't the "everything's in this" pho (it was seafood pho- which i believe is non-traditional), the pho didn't make me sniffle (if you have eaten pho before, you know exactly what i mean), and there were only a few pho offerings (unlike all the other pho joints i've been to that have a full page of pho offerings). I'm sorry Pho C&C, you're too clean (pho heads know, a proper pho place is dirty, and you shouldn't be able to understand the waiter), too bland, lack too many essential things and all around can't hang with the big guns. read more

The soup left a terrible taste in my mouth and their "large" is just a regular and their "small" are meant for children lol. Terrible. I admit that the food is really good but their costumer service is so bad that I vow to never return. First all I was charged over three dollars for extra limes, I had a pick up of a large steak and shrimp bowl and got absolutely no meat or shrimp I weighed it to about 50grams all together. After getting home I called and all the front register said was are you sure and then made an excuse that I couldn't be right and therefor there's nothing she could do. First of all, C&C is the only known place to me in Chico to offer Pho. As a native of San Francisco, naturally I came and to try it out. Well it SMELLS like pho. There's Viet music going on, and they actually give us chopsticks instead of forks and shit. I know that sounds weird, but you have no idea how many Asian places here offers forks over chopsticks. Anyways, the pho's portion wasn't really... satisfying. First of all, I'm a 135 lb Asian dude. Let's just say, I was able to order a spring roll to share with my buddy, then I took in a large Pho Tai. Either I'm desperate for more Pho or I'm suddenly superman, but I was still not hungry, and was able to get a small bowl of another Pho Tai. It might not sound much but... 135 lbs Asian dude? Back in San Francisco, a large pho tai would be able to satisfy me. Then comes the taste. It doesn't taste like San Francisco's or San Jose's or San Mateo's or whatever bay area's pho. While this is true, you have to put into account that Chico isn't exactly smacked near any Asian markets to buy their shit. I have no idea if Winco or Foodmax or Safeway sells pho ingredients. I'm guessing that they don't. Anyways, the taste was a little plain; but in a way, I didn't mind, because it reminded of how my MOM makes pho... Smells hellllllla good, but taste like water. My mom's excuse? "No MSG flavor, good for your body, son!" Oh well, usually I'd bitch about flavorless pho, but it just reminds me of homestyle cooking. One last thing I noticed... There's a lot of white people coming in, and no offense, but I doubt they know Viet cuisine that much, given we're smacked in the middle of drunkville. The food is good, but overpriced for the portion they serve. I've been to better pho places out of town where you get a good portion for $8. The service here is not so good. Driving around Chico, looking for businesses listed in the most current Yellow Pages, 75% of the small, niche businesses were gone. In their place was a Generic Professional Office or Generic Corporate Franchise. Something tells me that mom & pop stores are being pushed into the margins or the abyss of Chico real estate. This is not the MOST Vietnamese place I've ever been to, but I'm not going to be picky because I'm not exactly in Asia Central here in Chico. Chico appears very rural to me. The nice thing about Chico is the unexpected enclaves of left-wing, alternative leanings. Look in the Yellow Pages and there's a sizable number of Midwives listed under Midwives! It's the Boulder of California without that pretentious sector of disguised yuppiness hidden below the surface of holier-than-thou vegan Boulder. No Nuoc Mam (Vietnamnese clarified fish sauce, served as a staple INSTEAD of soy sauce, which is Chinese) at Pho C&C. But there's the requisite Sriracha hot sauce that all Southeast Asian restaurants have. There's regular soy sauce and thick, sweet soy sauce used in Southeast Asian cooking. I nice island with the chopsticks, Chinese soup spoons and napkins. (See photo of sauce & utensils island -- this is always in Pho restaurants). I ordered the pork chop with steamed rice and Vietnamese eggroll. My dining partner ordered the Super Bowl and spring rolls. The spring rolls came with less meat than I'm used to getting, but good. I missed the nuoc mam and I wished the rolls were more garlicky, however, that's subjective and I realize that Asians are in the minority in Chico. The Vietnamese eggrolls were more Chinese than I'm used to. I'm mostly Chinese in my Asian mutt-ness, however, my favorite eggrolls aren't Chinese or Filipino, they're Vietnamese. These eggrolls had more napa cabbage and less meat than an excellent restaurant like Benley's in Long Beach, CA or Thanh My in Westminster, CA. There was some kind of flavoring missing, too, the end result of which meant that these eggrolls tasted more like the nice, comfort food eggrolls I grew up with than the orgiastic paradise of hardcore Vietnamese eggrolls I eat in Southern California Vietnamese restaurants. The pork chops were sooooooooooo good. The steamed rice was just okay. Not fluffy and light satisfying rice, just okay like indifferent home cooked rice. The pork chop & Vietnamese eggroll dinner came with a lovely, light salad in a gentle vinaigrette; it had thin slivers of white onion, spiraling strings of carrot, thin and serrated slices of cucumber and just the right amount of light rice wine vinegar. As for the Super Bowl, the fresh mung bean sprouts, hot peppers, lime wedges, and Thai basil were very fresh, nicely presented, and ample for one serving. The broth was light, clear, and flavorful. It leaned toward a spring onion flavor instead of the heavier meat flavor that a restaurant like Pho Hong Phat in Long Beach serves. Either way, this cuisine is perfect for weather like Chico's in late August: very hot (93 degrees plus), very dry. On one hand, you get hungry; on the other hand, I can't stand heavy food in this weather. Thai iced tea: excellent. Vietnamese espresso -- excellent; in fact, if you want Thai iced coffee, which they don't carry, just order the Vietnamese iced espresso with sweetened condensed milk, cuz it's the same here. What a disappointment. I hadn't been here in a few years and last time 2 yrs ago I recall a good pho... Tasty bun thit nuong (grilled Pork w/ vermicelli) and excellent spring rolls... Tonight was a pho broth that was Meh. No added sides to mix in (did not bring bean sprouts or cilantro or basil or limes) and they couldn't even do the vermicelli because 45 Min prior to close (7:15pm) they were "out of noodles"... Whaaaaaa? How can a Vietnamese restaurant run out of vermicelli? Would a Italian place "run out of spaghetti??". Plus the rice dish portion I got at a full charge substitute was tiny . I'd give 1 star but the grilled meats (pork and shrimp) were done well and were fresh. The total lack of "routine" veggies that accompany Vietnamese food is inexcusable and hence the 2 stars. pathetic. Finally to add insult they gave a bill without actually writing down prices... Love, love, love this place! They're always so friendly there and seat patrons immediately. If you order delivery, it will be ready in 10 minutes and for the numerous times I've ordered from this place, they've NEVER given me a wrong order, which cannot be said of any other restaurant in Chico that delivers. Promise. The food is inexpensive, quality, and tasty as can be. I usually order the chicken noodle and add fish balls to it. Then, tack on an order of fresh spring rolls without pork (I don't like pork, there's nothing wrong with it, just a me thing). Love their sweet peanut sauce dip and everything. If you live in Chico you need to catch up to the rest of the world and get your butt in her for some Pho. I live in Portland so when i visit my brother here i feel like i am in a bit of a food desert but not here. Delicious Pho and several different varieties. I didn't get to talk to the owner and find out if they make their own noodles but the soup tastes great, like they make it low and slow and all the accompanying ingredients are super fresh so maybe they do. Either way you cant find a better value in cuisine than Pho. For those of you who don't know what is is: It is a big huge bowl of soup. The broth if made right is the star of the show, light delicate and deep rich flavor. they put thinly slice meat, meatballs, and other parts int a huge bowl with noodles and pour they hot broth over. The meat cooks in the broth and when it gets to you table you have a big pile of accoutrement's to add. Things like bean sprouts, basil, jalapeno, cilantro, hot sauce, housin, and soy. It is more food than most people can eat and it is usually around $8 for the bowl. It's fresh, tastey and a lot of food for your money and in any "big" city it's on every corner so to speak. After reading the other yelp reviews I was very much looking forward to this place. However, it was a big disappointment. The pho broth lacked flavor that I expect from a good bowl of pho, and the noodles clumped together. To make matters worse a large is the size of a small anywhere in the bay area. I'd hate to see the size of a small bowl. We also had the shrimp spring rolls and they were about 3/4 the size of what is normally expected, so I guess the shrimp refered to the size and not the meat. I really was looking forward to an addition of a pho restaurant in chico, so I might give this place one more chance in hopes that they were having an off day. read more

Chico Pho bests: Best peanut sauce (not even close). Best service (this is close, because "Noodle House" service is always good too, but C & C is a cut above). Best broth. Pho C & C broth is hearty and satisfying, and packed with savory and fresh flavors. Best value (tie with "Everyday Vietnamese"). Technically, "Everyday Vietnamese" gives you more pho, but C & C also has great portions, and better quality. If proximity to a Pho joint is not your concern in Chico, you should pick Pho C & C every time. Nobody I know has ever been disappointed by them. The location on Lassen and Cohasset is a bit out of the way, but it is totally worth it. read more

Moved here from Seattle this month where I was admittedly spoiled with good Pho (specifically the epic Pho Aroma in West Seattle), and bombarded with wet weather and cold people. My initial impression of the Pho at this joint was quite good. Not too greasy. Lots of meat and noodles. Just shy of 5-stars. Then the service ... basil and bean sprouts weren't offered. Strike 1. Water was never re-filled despite a slow night and me cursing my unhealthy love of Sriracha. Strike 2. Check never came, so I just went up to the counter to pay up. Strike 3. No salutation or acknowledgement when I left. Strike 4. I am a ridiculously loyal customer when I find a good spot, however, unfriendly service can make five star food leave a bad taste in my mouth. Kudos to the chef. Need to whip the front of the house into shape though. I still left a 22% tip though. Not sure why. read more

Okay, so here's the skinny on the pho in Chico: We have one true pho place in Chico. One. So for those of you living in places that have a high population of Vietnamese, please remember that Chico is about 80% caucasian, and we don't do pho. So I guess what I am getting to is this: before you judge our pho by YOUR neighborhood's standards, remember that we aren't judging how you drink or produce Super Bowl-winning quarterback by OUR standards With that out of the way: C & C Pho is good. Not great, just good. Part of it is because there is a bit of a strange "undersmell" a couple of different times I have gone in. That has a tendency to kill my appetite. Is it the best pho I have ever had? No. (That would go to a place in Chinatown of NYC, I have no idea what it's name was, but I hope it knows I dream about it fondly and often. Sunflower Restaurant in San Francisco was a distant second). But it is a relatively decent pho I can get in Chico. It is definitely out of the way, but it is better than driving to Fremont or into the city to get a bowl of pho. Their Thai iced teas are very tasty. I can never eat a whole large bowl, so I always settle for a small bowl. I vacillate between the beef bowl and the tofu bowl, both are very tasty and filling. We also order the spring rolls, which are good, but I really don't like the pork they use, so I usually pull it out). Overall, it's a place my partner and I go to at least once a week.
