I came in today on a Monday and was surprised that they had a full house! There was a waiting line. The last time I came was many many years ago (before I started yelping) and I was really really not impressed. Since then I have not been back. The only reason I came was because I was having lunch with my mother and an acquaintance, who chose this place. Boy was I surprised how much this place has changed. They offered a much bigger selection on their menu, including many authentic dishes. I took a picture of the store when we got seated, however when the food came out, it looked so delicious I didn't remember to take pictures until we were finished with our meal. We had: -Drinks (we had to ask for the drinks menu): I had the coconut juice, which I know comes from the can, but I can tell it's from the brand that I like, so good there. My mom and friend had the Salty Plum drink. I tried a sip.. it wasn't bad kind of taste like lemonade, except with plums.... -#8 Banh Xeo Tom Thit (Pork & Shrimp Vietnamese Pancake) appetizer section - There was a Vietnamese family sitting at the next table, who ordered the same thing and when they took a bite, one of the lady was said "wow, it's good!" and starting speaking in Vietnamese, which I can't understand, but THIS is why I ordered this dish. It's very crunchy and flavorful! Fresh and huge shrimp! -#126 Banh Bot Loc Tom Thit (Tapioca Cake w/ shrimp and pork) in appetizer section - This was my mom's favorite out of everything we ordered. It looks like clear dumplings made from tapioca and filled with ground shrimp and pork. -#48 Pho Tai (Pho with rare slice beef) - the broth was very good and I didn't feel greasy when I finished (unlike some places). The beef was really raw when it came out, which is good, but I feel like maybe they didn't bring it out as soon it was ready, because it took awhile before it finally looked cooked, which means the soup was not as hot as I would like it, however it was still fine. The beef was really really soft, which my mom loves, but a bit too soft for me (I think it just depends on which part it was cut from and a matter of opinions....I'm picky). Overall, it was great. -#125 Tom Yum Soup - The soup was a bit sweet for my taste, but I can tell they made it fresh and not just from a can. They had really yummy large fresh shrimp in it. However, I must deduct major points because at the bottom, we found a rectangle strip of plastic in the soup (maybe a seal from a seasoning or something).... at least it was not a hair, which I find absolutely disgusting. The waitress apologized and took the soup right away. We said we did not want another one, because we were already pretty much done with our meal. Soon after, the owner or maybe manager, came out, apologized and said he took it off the bill. -#78 Bun Tom Nuong, Thit Nuong, Cha Gio (Rice Vermicelli Noodle w/ Grilled shrimp, grilled pork, and egg roll - presentation looked good, it came in a big bowl. I actually didn't have this, but the friend that ordered this said it was pretty good. This restaurant used the largest size for shrimp. It was the biggest shrimp that I've seen used in Vietnamese restaurants. It was really fresh and pretty sweet. I would go back just for these shrimps! Overall, I had a great experience minus some issue, which I admit, is a pretty big error, however the flavor was pretty good and they were professional about it. And WOW, was she correct. Excellent food! We have been to Pho Cali at least 30+ times since they opened and the food is the best value in SRQ, if you enjoy FLAVOR and FRESH ingredients. Our favorites are #53 Pho shrimp noodle soup, # 78 Bun tom rice vermicelli with grilled shrimp, grilled pork and egg roll, there are so many choices to pick you must go back several times. The service is very quick for the amount of servers, we feel a bit rushed because they are always busy, but it is CLEAN and they have the best fresh fruit boba's around. The menu is never ending! Whether Pho Cali is an authentic Vietnamese experience makes no difference, although it is close to the real deal. The food is sufficiently exotic to wake the most jaded punter, so that if your palate is fatigued by endless bland-o burgers and fried mystery meals, your choices are clear: go Vietnamese, go Indian, go Thai - go anywhere without a 'grille'. Located on Main St. in downtown Sarasota, this is one of the best asian eateries on the street with the most authentic Vietnamese. We have been eating here for three years and then stopped going because we were tired of being treated terribly. Mostly by the male waiter that works there. We even tried eating there during off hours, so that they would not be busy and were still treated like crap. I tried another angle and brought my Vietnamese friend with me, and he treated him like crap, too! Is there another approach to be treated well at Pho Cali? The food is wonderful however, so don't let the hatred coming off of the wait staff get you down right? My favorite appetizer is their Tofu Goi Cuon, $3.50 for 2 rolls. Their's are the most flavorful and fresh that I have had in the Tampa Bay area. The Pho (about $6.75) is amazing! The noodle are perfect and not soggy, the broth is full of flavor and tastes like homemade, and the veggies and herbs are always fresh. The rice plates are good, too ($7.00). Actually, everything I have had is superb and very authentic. Clay Pot dishes are quite nice with a balance of black pepper and sweetness $8.95. Their pickles are fresh and somewhat spicy, sweet and sour pickled radish, cabbage, and carrot (additional side about $2.00). They do not have Bahn Mi (Grilled meat sandwich). They also have Gai Lan (about $7.50, Chinese broccoli), which is rare to be seen anywhere but an authentic Chinese restaurant. They do not serve and Vietnamese desserts, such as my beloved Che Ba Mau (sweet bean and jellies w/ crushed ice and coconut milk). They do have blended milk only varieties of bubble tea (around $4.00), but are not very happy to make it for you. Once I did not receive the tea until I was done eating my meal, and had to ask for it 4 times. In conclusion, we now only go to Miss Saigon when eating Vietnamese in Saraota. It is sort of funny, I've been going to pho cali since it opened and often eat there for lunch every other week and I haven't bothered to review them in all this time. I've never been disappointed with the food at pho cali. But my recommendation is take a chance and try something different here. YOu may be comfortable with getting one of the basic stir fries or some fried rice but go wild and get the fish in clay pot or Hue style bun cha (#86). there is a lot of good food here and just pic something different and you'll probably be pleasantly surprised. It is true, the service can be a bit jarring here, but it is not that bad and has improved over the years. Maybe it is because I come in often and the staff now knows be that I think that, but know what? it is always packed and if it was really that terrible of service it wouldn't be so busy. Pho Cali is so venerated in the Sarasota community that I'm surprised I hadn't heard about it sooner. A visit on a recent weekday afternoon presented a great experience. The restaurant itself is right along the bustling Main Street strip, and it presents a somewhat overwhelming, but authentic menu with tons of choices from pho, to other noodle dishes, to meat dishes and even a solid number of vegetarian offerings. I went for the vegetable pho (in chicken broth) which was excellent. The bowl came jam packed with noodles topped with an interesting assortment of vegetables ranging from bok choy to snow peas and a few other items of interest. The broth was delicious and it was a filling, but not overbearing item. We also tried the fried quail (appetizer) which was interesting, but maybe not for everyone. My friend had wonton soup and their dumplings are excellent, stuffed full of pork with a gingery bite as well. I thought their prices were wonderfully inexpensive, and the service was prompt and courteous. The image of dish #76 caught my attention when we passed by the restaurant and that was what I ordered with the shredded pork skin spring roll as an appetizer and a Passion fruit boba tea. #76 is mostly a cold dish but the pork bbq is cooked well and the flavoring is done well too. The Rice noodles were sweet and so were the sliced carrots. The orange thing, I can't remember if it was the shrimp paste but I didn't have an allergic reaction to it and it was slightly spiced. The only thing I didn't like was that there was a young male server who brought out the meals and distributed silverware. We were sat down promptly, the waitress was very friendly, menus and water were brought out immediately. My colleagues and I all got different varieties of pho. The food came out promptly, and served in large bowls. The food was very tasty and plentiful. This is one of the few authentic Vietnamese restaurants that I know, and I have never been disappointed here. One of my colleagues is Vietnamese and she agreed that the Pho was very very good. If Pho is not you thing, the menu is extensive, with over 50 items to choose from, ranging from different rice dishes, fish and meats. The price point is very good especially for Sarasota. Honestly saying the food is not bad but not the greatest. The price is reasonable for downtown area. Located on Main Street in Sarasota, you'll find Pho Cali. There's nothing remarkable on the outside but as I stepped in, I found the staff to be very friendly. For a Tuesday afternoon, I was surprised how many guests were there. I was a bit under the weather and felt like Pho would do me some good. This is definitely my "go-to soup" when I'm feeling under the weather. The menu is very extensive but unfortunately I didn't see any banh mi (the Vietnamese sandwiches). The prices were a bit steeper than I would have imagined but being located in the downtown area, that is expected. After looking and looking, I decided on two appetizer soups. I ordered the "tom yum soup with shrimp" and the "Vietnamese beef ball soup". For the both of those combined, it would have been the cost of one of the Pho soups anyhow. The soups came out fast and I was ready to chow down! I tried the Vietnamese beef ball soup first. Honestly, the broth was okay. Nothing spectacular. It actually almost tasted like the broth for wonton soup. With any soup, you really want the broth to be impactful but subtle. I found it lacking in that department. The meatballs were as expected and I was content with the amount. I am not a novice to Vietnamese food; however, I was unaware that the soup would not have any noodles at all. This really should be indicated on the menu for patrons. I was fine with not having noodles because I was wanting more soup than noodles but had I wanted some, I would have been a bit caught off guard. This soup was just okay for me. The tom young soup with shrimp was by far a better choice. I really enjoyed the sweet, sour, spicy flavor from this soup. Again, as a forewarning, this soup did not come with any noodles as well. The onions were a bit big for the soup but all in all, I would pick this soup over the Vietnamese beef ball soup. The shrimp were large but slightly overcooked. It went past the point of no return. Despite the overcooked shrimp, the soup was very enjoyable. Between the two soups, I was filled and got my soup fix in the for the day. I would return here to try their other items as they offer pho, bun, rice dishes and boba. For the price versus quantity, it's a bit much. Overall, a decent experience. read more

The only thing that redeems this place in my mind is the broth. I used to love it because it was the only pho I knew. Five years and many bowls later, I am sorely disappointed. The price has skyrocketed in the last few years and the bowl may be the same size, but the portion is half the size. Had heard a lot about this place before we ordered lunch for everyone in my office. The problem began when the order was placed. The person taking the order was rude and very short. Then I was sent pick up the food because I was paying. When I arrived, I walked in and announced I was there to pick up and order. An older gentleman did not greet me and instead gave me a bill to sign. Then I asked for additional sauces and was told no. Not any explanation, just no. And then after I signed credit card receipt, the man picked up the signed copy and never said thank you or anything. And to make it even worse, my meal was terrible. Excellent Pho/Vietnamese in Sarasota. My girlfriend and I found it on Yelp and it definitely did no disappoint. I've eaten Pho many times and Pho Cali was up there with the best. I ordered the traditional beef with tendon and steak. The steak was cooked perfectly and a huge bowl was brought out nice and hot. Add ins on the side. Was delicious! My girlfriend ordered the lemongrass chicken that was outstanding. Huge portion and the lemongrass gave the dish a very refreshing flavor. Would recommend both of these dishes for sure. Everything I get here, every time, is perfect. Their phos are excellent. The fried tofu is house made and melts in your mouth. The lemongrass chicken, with or without coconut, might be the best Vietnamese dish in America, followed closely by the lemongrass tofu and the clay pot fish. We visit the area every year and we tried Pho Cali spur-of-the-moment for lunch in our swim suits (we at least put a shirt on)! The atmosphere was typical of a Vietnamese/Asian restaurant (see photo) and there were a wide variety of customers. The restaurant had a number of "awards" on the walls rating them as one of the best restaurants in sarasota for their category of cuisine. A few of my family members love pho and they really liked it here. I had the pad Thai with tofu and another family member had broccoli and chicken with white rice. All of the dishes were delicious and we cleaned our plates (and bowls). In addition, we ordered pork and vegetarian egg rolls, which were okay. We are a group of Vietnamese tourists visiting this Vietnamese restaurant for the first time from California. We arrived 30 minutes prior to the closing hour and were greeted by an unfriendly owner. The restaurant had a few tables occupied. As a large group not wanting to disturb other diners, we requested two inside tables, further away from other diners. Our request was denied firmly without any explanation as if they would want to show foot patrons how busy the restaurant is at this late hour. The menu has some Vietnamese specialty a la cart dishes like 'Cá Kho Tộ', Canh Ch0ua Cá Bông Lau, etc. for family style dining but when we asked, we were told that they are served for individuals only. We were not sure if that is the style or it was late. It is very odd since one cannot possibly finish a clay pot of salty fish stew and a big bowl of hotpot Canh Chua Ca Bong Lau with rice. The Ca Kho To dish was a bit too sweet but the most noticeable one is the fish is not fresh, probably from frozen, since the fish texture was not firm. The Canh Chua Ca Bong Lau hotpot is also too sweet but the taste and fragrance are nice. We also tried Pho which is the restaurant's signature dish. We've found this is quite disappointing. The broth is murky. It is supposedly clear and fragrant. The noodles were overcooked and lumpy. The meat in the Special Bowl was mostly overcooked and chewy. Other waitstaff are fine. Even iif the food is good bad attitude gives customers a bad taste and won't return. We have ordered take out and pho soup is good. But person answering the phone could be nicer. There is no place for rudeness in restaurant business. Place need to also update and remodel. read more
