I'm a sucker for Asian carbs and pho on a cold, rainy day like today is def one of my vices. This place is one of my go-to pho places in town. It's right by 35 so the location is pretty convenient. No frills and generally quick. The meats are slightly tough but the tripe and broth are good. The one strange thing about this place is the portion isn't always consistent. This place has the tastiest pho I've ever had here in Austin. The beef for the pho tai (pre-cooked) was a gorgeous red, and stayed that way until I actually dropped it in the broth. This was a delivery order, and oftentimes the heat from the other food items cooks the meat slightly while it's still in the bag: making the meat turn a greyish hue, and slightly chewy. Even after an hour or so (when I finally reheated the broth and put the soup together) the beef from Pho Hoang maintained that wonderful color. This is quality beef, very flavorful and tender. But the noodles were what really blew me away: so, so tender. Every other pho place I've eaten from in Austin has the chewy, ball-of-rubber-bands look and feel: not these. I couldn't believe how much more pleasant these were to eat. My husband put his soup together, but fell asleep before he ate it. I snuck a few bites of it the next morning, and the noodles were still tender, but not soggy. We had the fried dumplings as an appetizer, they were crisp, flavorful and not soggy, either. My husband and I eat low carb, but we are absolutely having another "cheat" meal tomorrow night, so that we can have this again. Truly impressive. read more

It looks like you're stepping into your high school dining hall again, but this time people are balding, bearded, dressed for business, and slurping buckets of Pho - instead of, pimply, wearing chains, and busting open Twinkies. I have been eating here since the very beginning when they first opened. My family and I used to eat here nearly once a week. They got so familiar with me that the wait staff knew exactly what I wanted to order the second I walked in. The food here is fantastic. The pho soup is better than most places I've tried in Austin. Other favorites include the egg roll and iced coffee which is quite strong. Coffee is freshly brewed unlike some places. I have tried a lot of dishes here, and probably the only I didn't care for was the stir fried noodle. It wasn't bad, just wasn't great. Great for authentic Vietnamese cuisine, and at times it reminded me of places I visited in Vietnam for a quick lunch pho - what a surprise in Austin! Don't let the deluge of combinations and permutations on the menu intimidate you. It's essentially a choice of which meat you want, which type of noodle, and what type of sauce/broth. Thus far, this is my favorite Pho place in Austin. I have heard of a few others I need to try, so I will leave 4 stars. Pho Hoang is nothing to write about from a decor standpoint. Long tables with CNN playing on a single big screen. What it lacks in decor it makes up in inexpensive fare and fast service. We can get in and out, with a fully belly, in less than 1/2 hour and probably close to 20 minutes if we have to push it. The food is consistent, and good, and you can get out for a bit more than $6 if you simply eat Pho with water. Add on a couple of eggrolls to dip (yum) and it still runs around $9. read more

Not sure what has happened, but the service was poor, the food was not its usual quality, flies circling at several tables, and the tables and condiments on the tables were tacky (like stuck on grease). The young man in glasses that appeared to be running the show could have not cared less about being there and making folks feel welcome or finding out if we enjoyed our food. We have been going for years and this is the first time that it has been sub-par. There is usually a very cheerful woman there, taking orders, greeting folks, and checking back on everyone. She was not there and it definitely shows through the lack of service and friendliness of the gentlemen working yesterday (May 22nd) evening. This is our favorite pho spot. Broth is better and more flavorful than where we were previously going. The staff is very nice and helpful, too. It really pains me to hear/see people complain about the menu. All you have to do is ask, people! And be polite! I've seen their servers and cashier treated very poorly, and it really pisses me off. If you're unhappy with something, maybe say something BEFORE you've eaten everything on your plate, ya know... just saying. I had a very nice experience here over a month back. I ordered the avocado shake and one of the pho dishes. It was absolutely delicious and the broth of the pho was fragrant. This is definitely a spot worth mentioning as it is authentic. Atmosphere: 4/5 If you see other Vietnamese people in a Vietnamese restaurant, you know the spot is legit. The outside of the vicinity looks very small but once inside, it is very spacious. Bathrooms are towards the back. Decor is very minimal but modern and simple. Nothing out of the ordinary. Food: 5/5 Authentic experience with the taste being what Viet food should taste like. Great selections and a simple menu to work off of in terms of ordering. Service: 5/5 The waitress was attentive and it was a nice thing. She was not overtly needy at all with hovering over us -- good balance of service and coming in clutch when needed/wanted but not disrespectful and intrusive. I like this. Value: 4/5 Overall, very good prices. Compared to a lot of places I've been too, these guys are a bit more on the pricier side. Probably my favorite place to get pho up north, the broth is usually very flavorful. It's not like that clear broth you get at some of the more "Americanized" Vietnamese places. The Pho here is by far the best available in Austin - but specifically at this location. The location on Rutland uses a different recipe, so be sure to go to this one if you're craving a yummy bowl of Pho Tai. I've been going here for about 5 years now, and the pricing has been the same the whole time up until about a month ago. They re-did their menu's and added about a dollar to each of the menu items. You're looking at about $6.50 for a large with the regular round beef. The waitstaff is very quick at serving - you'll normally get your food within 2-3 minute of ordering, even at lunchtime. It's amazing. It is cash/check only, so be sure to bring some or you'll need to pay $2.50 to their ATM + whatever your bank charges to withdraw some cash. read more

Ok so here it goes. I've never been to this establishment therefore decided to play it safe and order my usual. Spring rolls with fish sauce and a fresh bowl of Pho Tai! Before I get into the meal, i want to mention the aesthetics of the place and service. You're greeted right away and met with a smile upon being seated. The restaurant decor was quite interesting with almost giving a hint of the inside colors of the Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans. The floors are clean cement but the overall feel is that of an outdoor market. Now the meal. My order was brought out swiftly after I ordered with Spring Rolls first. The Spring Rolls were not fresh as the bang trang wrapper seemed hard, and dry. The fish sauce was also very plain which was quite a disappointment. Ah but the Pho came out and became quite impressed. You see the meat should not be cooked by the time the bowl hits your table. The thin slices of meaty goodness should be raw and fresh and cook in your bowl while the broth is lava-hot. It met my expectations as the slices of lean cow goodness were rare but cooked well in the amazing broth. As for the broth which is the staple of the perfect Pho, loved it. It had a sheen of a little oil or perhaps the fat of the meat it was cooked in. Regardless, it was very flavorful and promoted me to not drown it in Sriracha and Hoysan Sauce. Unfortunately I was never given refill on my water but I find this typical in Vietnamese run establishments. So if you're ever in Round Rock north of Austin, swing by and check this place out. This is one of my favorite places to frequent because it is close, cheap, and, most importantly, has several great tasting menu items. My favorite dish has to be the pork chops served over rice. It also comes with a fried egg. These thin chops are great because of their charcoal flavor and, once you add a little egg yolk, will reward you with one of the most enjoyable pork chops imaginable. The sliced roasted pork dish is also worth trying. The meat is thin and has more than a hint of sweetness. You can get it as a rice bowl or a vermicelli bowl. They have many rice and vermicelli bowl selections. The rice bowls usually come with a fried egg, while the vermicelli bowls usually come with an egg roll. The egg rolls here are also top notch. Service was prompt, and the broth had a lovely dark, earthy color. Great flavor, though the noodles were a little al dente, which freaked me out slightly. While the food was good, I was mainly disappointed in the portions. I ordered the small bowl, which appeared decent at first glance, but was deceptively shallow, like Lady Gaga, or most presidential candidates.
