Most restaurants the toppings look a few days old so oftentimes I'm hesitant to dunk them in the soup. That's not the case at PKG. Bean sprouts were perfectly white like Carrie Underwood's teeth; Thai basil was perfectly green like a leprechaun; lime was perfectly lime green... umm... lime was lime. Broth: Pho needs no introduction. Their Bun Bo Hue, however, had distinct flavor that I'd never had anywhere else. It was sweet (rather than spicy) and refreshing... almost artificial, ramen-seasoning like flavor. It was different in the nicest way possible. Portion: I went with the large portion because I'm a man. I was warned that large is really pho-king large. Dude, I don't want no baby pho... hit me up with the man-size one. My family loves pho and this is our go to place. For less than a dollar upgrade on the pho you get enough to share for two. The only reason I took off stars though is that we've needed to confront them twice on overcharges on our bill. Since they don't give you the receipt when you go to the counter, the boy there would add a dollar or two extra to your bill to pocket for themselves. Best Vietnamese in the area. Larger than most Asian restaurants; they could easily seat over 100. Clean and well lit. Very little turnover in the staff over the years, so we don't even need to order most times: we get "the usual". The overall quality of the dishes is consistently superb. Their pho is amazing. The small bowl is huge, very satisfying, and inexpensive. The large bowl can easily feed two. The vegetables are always fresh and the broth is always piping hot. I always get something with grilled pork because it's so tender and flavorful. Broken rice combo is great because you get to taste a lot of different items. They're always swamped early on the weekends, but dinner is much slower. On the weekend, there's always a high percentage of Vietnamese patrons, which always a good sign. Great for weekday lunch if you're local. Worth the drive if you're not! Great for kids. I see them make simple rice and chicken dishes for the little ones. Veteran's discount. I've been here before for lunches and had a relatively decent experience. The inside is a lot prettier than the plaza appears. The wait staff is friendly and willing as one would expect any restaurant. If you've ever been to a Vietnamese restaurant before, it's not much different than the usual classics on the menu. During the workweek day, the restaurant is relatively empty with only a few customers making the service a lot faster than other places around the area. Found Pho Kien Giang thru Yelp app... arrived, was busy and many tables unbussed but within 15 mins we were seated. You could tell they had just finished a mad rush. After another 10-15 mins, our order was taken. The wait staff of young men were so polite and accommodating. Food arrived fresh and hot! Don't judge by the strip plaza. It looks just a bit sketchy but once you walk in your pleasantly surprised it's open, ample tables, and clean. And bonus lots of Vietnamese and Asians filling the tables. I'm not from the area but looking to move to Clearwater. Back home in the Mecca of international cuisines DC/MD I'm a pho crackhead. An inveterate pho consumer, I attempt to have a bowl at least once every place I visit. This time it was St. Petersburg, Florida. A Yelp search for "pho restaurants near me" revealed a number north of my location, and the game was on! Many of the reviews of Pho Kien Gang spoke of the nature of the environment -- having lived in Asia, I can tell you not to judge a book by its cover! As I've found many times over, some of the best establishments lie in areas that one might consider "run down." Pho Kien Gang is no different. But don't be put off: entering the restaurant, one is greeted by a clean, welcoming atmosphere, a friendly (if not sometimes overworked) staff, and an aroma to die for! The menu is almost overwhelming. The items outnumber the pho offerings by an order of magnitude. But I came here for pho. My waiter was happy to allow me to "customize" my order (Pho, Tai, Nam, Chin) and when I asked for raw meat, he offered it on the side or in the broth. I chose the latter. I did order green onions (scallions) in oil, and never received them. Consider maybe deducting half a star... The broth was full-bodied, aromatic and flavorful. The beef (all three types) were fat-free and tasty. The bowl was large - as large as the largest I've had - and the staff was amazed that I'd eaten the whole thing at the end. I also had the "three-color" desert, which I admit may be the tastiest I've ever had! Good work, Pho Kien Gang. I visit St. Petersburg about twice each year. The pho comes in two sizes regular and large... and let me tell you... the "regular" size is probably equivalent to everywhere else's large! It's an hour from Orland Florida but since it's only 20 mins from Clearwater Beach, it was on the way for us. Our first impressions of the restaurant was that its very small and the outside isn't as luxurious. We ordered the sweet and sour soup, caramelized pork in pottery pot, broken rice with pork chop, and two orders of summer rolls. As true Vietnamese, we were so amazed at how delicious and authentic the food was. In addition, the service was great and the staffs were so kind. A few days later, we tried another Vietnamese restaurant that was pretty pricy and luxurious but the food was such a disappointment. I was recommended this place as one of the best spots to get Pho in Clearwater. Upon arrival, I realized I had actually been here before! There is a decent amount of parking space and the interior is clean. The decor is dimly-lit and cozy and the bathroom is maintained. Unfortunately, the food is just not great. I wish I had more nice things to say about the place, but unfortunately there were only a few things that I could eat because all of their broths are chicken or fish except for about 5-6 items. I ordered a type of tofu soup and a vegetarian roll. The roll was delicious. The tofu and soup had the consistency of jelly or too much cornstarch and just wasn't appetizing at all. The group I was with ordered beef and pork Pho, which no one finished and didn't have anything remarkable to say about the dishes. The portion sizes are proportionate for one person. The service was subpar as there were items forgotten and caused half of our group to be halfway through a meal while the forgotten food was being cooked. Final thought.. Such a great place! I come here every week to get an extra large bowl of pho, spring rolls and sometimes chicken wings. All are great! And the portions are really big! (I really eat so much so I had to order the extra large..) And you can't beat the price! The waiters are also very very friendly and patient. Was starving and wanted to get a bowl of pho to our favorite go-to place. The bowl we got so terribad I hope it was just the chef being out on holiday. It has no taste and was bland. You can tell by taking in a spoonful of pho broth when it first come out before adding condiment It did have a lot of meat and even a pork hock (extra from bun bo hue pot???) that didn't belong. Very popular place, and not to stereotype, but it's always a good sign when you go into an Asian restaurant and there are actual Asians eating there! I'm a big fan of bun and my only critique is that they used fresh cabbage in the bowl (normally it's lettuce? Or at least has always been lettuce the 100s of other times I've eaten bun). I really dislike raw cabbage, so I had to pick every last bit out of my bowl before I ate it. Once all cabbage was removed, my bun was very tasty. Once you order, food came out very quickly.
