Don't know why I've never reviewed this place before?! Been coming here for years and only for one item...Hu Tieu King Kho (Dry) and I have them substitute the soy based sauce for the red meat sauce. Even though I order the "dry" noodle, I always pour my entire cup of broth and meat sauce in the bowl--lol. To me, that red, meat sauce makes the dish and I've tried the soy based one, but I always go back to red one. This always hits the spot every time I'm craving a rice noodle soup, other than Pho. Despite its name, this place has REALLY good Hu Tieu Nam Vang. If your dabble at Vietnamese food has always been the classic pho or spring rolls, I highly recommend Hu Tieu to anyone who loves a delicious bowl of noodle soup. The Hu Tieu Nam Vang Kho (dry) and Hu Tieu My Tho Kho (dry) are to die for here. This unique combination of clear noodles/rice noodles with squid, shrimp, ground pork, bbq pork, liver, intestines, and mixed veggies with a side of sauce and hearty soup make my mouth salivate! Just mix all of the sauce into your bowl and enjoy it with a delicious pork bone broth on the side. Would be 4 stars but the coffee and service were horrendous. Don't even bother getting the iced coffee here. It was FILLED with ice. My husband finished it in 3 sips. The service was nothing to write home about. They were short, brief, and one of the waitresses just had to reach over our table while we were eating to change the utensil tray. This is my go to hu tieu spot and I've been ordering here at least twice a month during these COVID times. I've tried all the different hu tieu noodle soups and you can't go wrong with any. It's definitely up to your personal preference to what kinds of toppings you'd like to have and what kind of noodle/base you prefer. Some has an egg noodle base, rice noodle, clear noodle and the toppings for each one is slightly different. My favorite is hu tieu nam vang kho which has my favorite fixings of bbq pork, liver, intestine, and heart which is so delicious! I get it with half rice noodle and half egg noodle. It comes with a side of broth and pour over sauce. And I always top it off with a fresh rau ma tuoi (fresh pennyworth drink) which is always so refreshing. First of all, I find the name pho-king hysterical. You'd think it was intentional, but after breaching the subject with the older woman at the cash register whom I have come to assume is the owner, I am convinced that it's not. Which is even funnier. I told her she should sell t-shirts and she seemed very honestly befuddled while asking in reply 'Why does everyone keep asking me for the t-shirt?'. Okay yes they have a great name... but this place is not a novelty - It's really my favorite pho in San Diego. I always get the Pho Tai (#11) with the steak 'on the outside', or the same broth but with vegetables (#17) and it is consistently good. The broth is aromatic and flavorful, and you can taste the hints of anise. The noodles are always done perfectly, and the plate of 'fixins' is always plentiful and fresh. I've tried a handful of other places in Little Saigon, and have frequently left feeling parched and a bit headache-y which I think is an abundance of sodium and/or MSG. Don't get me wrong, ALL pho is chock full of sodium, this place included, but it's not so much as to upset my 'delicate constitution'. I can never resist getting an order of the egg rolls when I go - they're nice and thick, well seasoned and crispy. Wrap them up in the lettuce and mint provided, dip them in the fish sauce, and chow down! The shrimp and pork spring rolls - served with a rich peanut sauce - are also tasty and refreshing. I also love that they bring a separate dish of any dipping sauces for each person. No awkward spooning of the sauce onto your plate where it just spreads out into an undippable puddle or politely dipping just one end and eating the remainder of the roll dry... double-dip at will! Wheee! They also have a large variety of shakes and juices. I tried the "pennyworth (no idea what that is btw) juice" my first time, which turned out to be dark green in color with a very refreshing taste that i could only describe as a cross between carrot juice and cucumber juice... I loved it so much I've never seen past it to get a second choice. Oh, except the 33 beer - that's pretty good too. Like a cross between Corona and Sierra Nevada. The draw back of these authentic places down in Little Saigon is they're not very Americanized. The service and cleanliness seem to be a little sub-par to what most Americans expect... as I've found it to be consistently so with any pho place I've tried (it seems the more authentic the food, the less cleanliness and service you get) I've come to expect it and don't really hold it against them. (Much. Notice they're one star short of perfect. That's not because of the food.) Also, parking is a little sketchy. If you can get a spot in the main lot, you're good to go. When this is full you can park in the dirt lot across the street behind a grocery store that is full of huge pot holes and a few old mattresses. So basically, don't come here for the ambiance- come here for a pho-king fantastic bowl of soup. I definitely don't like how they do service fee but I guess with the pandemic, it makes sense. I ordered a pho beef balls, soda lemonade, and my hubby ordered special pho with a iced lemonade no ice. Honestly....horrible. I got chicken pho and ordered a side of vegetables. First off the chicken was dry and so hard to chew it was getting stuck in my teeth and the vegetables looked dirty. I have to say that Pho King is pho-king good! :P They are located right across from the infamous OG Pho Hoa but I believe their pho is also up to par with them. Service here is awesome and the staff are very nice compared to other pho joints around town. Their com tam thit nuong(bbq pork w/ broken rice) is also very nice and tasty! Large portions and not over grilled. One thing about it is that the have it pre-cut for you so that kinda kills the fun of slicing it yourself, heh. All good though! The pho is also great! Mi Xao Thao Cam - Soft stir fried egg noodle combo - beef, shrimp, pork and I think, chicken too. The shrimp in the combo were tasty & cooked just right until I got to the 4th one - the gastrointestinal tract hadn't been totally removed. I know it's ok to eat it but it's not a very appetizing visual. It was fine but the noodles were clumped together, even after adding the broth. Maybe ordering them "crispy" would have changed that. Our group also ordered the fried egg rolls, I ate only one bite because it had a strange smell & tasted like the meat had soured. I'm not really a pho person. I only eat it when my family cooks it at home (if there's nothing else to eat). Luckily, they don't only just serve pho! Hu tieu my tho kho is my favorite dish here! I always order it dry so they bring a bowl of broth on the side. The food overall is pretty good. My experience here has been pretty good as well! One time I accidentally ordered the wrong thing. I felt bad so I didn't want to tell them and was going to suck it up and eat it. My friend, on the other hand, decided to ask them if I could switch my order because I ordered the wrong thing. The com tam with grilled pork and grilled shrimp came with a huge scoop of rice and the standard tomatoes, lettuce and cucumber but only two small slices of pork and two little grilled shrimps. It was actually ridiculous. The che ba mau and cafe sua da was 3/4 a cup of ice and three sips of actual drink. We ordered number 28, a soupless hu tieu pho, because we are huge fans of 25 dry at Ha Nam Ninh in San Francisco and wanted to give this a try. The quality of the ingredients was very poor - my brother had intestine in his dish and it smelled really bad. The service was alright, a lot slower than the average pho place. Pho King is located along what I like to call the "Pho Corridor" on El Cajon Blvd. It is near many other restaurants that primarily serve pho. Don't let its location or rough feel of the neighborhood dissuade you from coming. They have a small parking lot in front and if full, you can park on nearby adjacent streets. The inside is a bit more modern that some of the other pho places. They have booth seating as well as long tables that you may have to share depending on number of people there. As always, I get a large number one special (the bowl with everything). It was as solid as any other place I've been too. My only gripe was the bowl shape. It was more of a cone shape than round. I'm sure the contents are roughly the same as their competitors', but when I put my chopsticks down, they tended to get wet further down. Low enough to get my fingers full of broth when I picked the sticks back up. This may be a non issue. In fact, it can be avoided by using a fork or probably using chopsticks the correct way. Anyway, it didn't take anything from my experience. Overall, the place seems pretty authentic. Service is good, food is good, and I would gladly recommend it to friends. read more

My best friend lives across the street from this place and has been talking it up for sometime. After working up an appetite playing Little Big Planet we walked over and got our Pho on. Walking in and sitting down, the place looks pretty grimy. I would never bring my husband here because he is picky about such things but I'm a little more lenient i guess. The server brought us water with slices of lime and kept them filled throughout our meal. I ordered a small 22 which is chicken pho. I thought about ordering the large but I'm glad i didn't because i wasn't able to finish the small. I really liked all the condiments and sauces offered even though the bottles were all a little sticky. Aside from the usual sriracha, hoison, soy sauce and chili paste, there were different types of vinegar, a jar of pickled serrano peppers and garlic, a little dish of fresh ginger in some sort of oil, and a fermented chili paste. I added a little bit of everything plus the fresh and crunchy bean sprouts, basil, and fresh cut jalapenos. I should have taken a picture of the bowl after i added everything. it was a beautiful sight. It tasted just as good as it looked. The chicken was a little sparse and what pieces i did get were pretty tough but i chalk that up to continuously cooking in the super hot broth. My friend got the 55, which is a noodle/salad looking dish with chopped up pork eggrolls in it. If i ate pork, i would order that next time. it was so pretty and looked amazing. The service was incredibly friendly and efficient. The place was a ghost town when we arrived but filled up as we dined so obviously its popular. i wonder how many people come in because of the name? I only come here for their Hu Tieu King Kho. That dish is DELICIOUS. However, I always tell my BF to order this to-go. Why? Because of the horrible customer service. I know some of the waiters are not fluent in English, but a smile is universal. I never got a smile. I, however, got a frown before--and maybe even a I-will-cut-you look from one of the waiter. Here's the story: I ALWAYS order Hu Tieu King Kho. Period. I don't order anything else. Like a fatty that I am, I couldn't wait to togo to eat it at home so my boyfriend and I decided to eat there instead. The waiter didn't ask us what we wanted to drink (he probably assumed we drank a whole gallon of water before we came) and just took our order. I distinctively uttered "HU TIEU KING KHO". He repeated what I ordered to reassure me. I was happy. Ten minutes later---still no water. He then came out with a bowl of I dunno-what and something my boyfriend ordered. I politely told this was not what I ordered. He said, "No--you ordered the [insert dish here]". No, dude. I know what I ordered. We had a stare-off for about 3 seconds--then he flashed me that I-will-cut-you-or-maybe-spit-in-your-food look then took the dish back into the kitchen and said something to the cooks. I was scared. I urged my boyfriend I didn't want the food anymore because I didn't want to have spit for lunch. He reassured me that that it PROBABLY won't happen. Ten minutes later. My dish came out. I used to speak highly of this place! But after a series of bad experiences, I decided to walk away from my favorite PHO place in the whole SD, not look back and not regret about it. First of all, their serving has changed over the years. I have been going to this place over the last 3 years and from a small bowl, they might have upgraded to serving you in a BIGGER bowl for the same price (maybe because of the competition in the area) but the numbers of steak in the soup has declined over the years. Now I am lucky if I have 6 in there. It always leave me hanging and wanting for more. I stick my chopsticks in there only to find out that there's nothing. NOTHING! Second, the place's cleanliness had gotten worse. It's bad enough to see flies flying around. But one time I came here, my table wreaks of fish smell I almost thought I was at a strip club in Vegas. Then on top of that, you see a waitress clean tables with the same yellow rag over and over again. No spray, no bleach, NOTHING! I couldn't get over the smell and the sight, I decided to leave. IT PAINS MY HEART TO SAY THESE THINGS, but I can't let people go to this place without a warning. The name is clever and all, but there's really nothing special about this place. I'm not a big fan of Pho or Vietnamese food because they tend to be overly salty and loaded with MSG. However, Pho King is one of the better one in my book, tho the food is still overly salty (maybe I just have too many taste buds =\ ), I can't really taste much MSG. The grill meat have a nice seasoning to it, and my favorite part? Pho King has a nice, modern decor and the tables and the bathrooms are VERY clean!!! While the price is still low. I think my companions all enjoyed their food and drink. Though it might be good to go with someone who speaks Vietnamese because the waitress there speaks very very little English.
