I used to love Pho Mai. I would go here all the time when I was a kid in the 2000s and 2010s even before their menu expanded to include Filipino food. Last night was the first time in a while I went back and I felt so disappointed. I understand the signs of the times and needing to modernize such as ordering before getting a seat, but this time around, I was pretty shocked by its result. We got there around 12:55. Waited in line for about 15-20 minutes and ordered by 1:14am (see screenshot). We then waited an hour from 1:14am - 2:11am (see meta data on food photo) for our food. We only received our food after going up and checking where it is and almost cancelling because we were so hungry. Don't get me wrong, pho Mai is ran by community elders who are up late running a late night restaurant and I want to offer them grace, but having to wait for almost an hour and with the pho just being ok, didn't make it feel worth it. One thing I'll add is there might've (just might've) been a table of 4 that ordered their food after us. They ordered 4 bowls compared to us just ordering 1 and they received their food first. This added to the frustration. Not sure if I'd go back to pho mai now, but I'm grateful for the memories of what pho mai used to be. read more

I'll be quite honest but the food here isn't good and doesn't even fit the standard of good quality Vietnamese cuisine. If you ever tried TK Noodle, then I would put this restaurant in that category. The pho broth was okay but they really skimp out on the meat to noodle ratio. My pho had 1 piece of tendon, 2 strips of fatty flank and the rest was noodles. Broth was just too salty with no umami. The Pho AP Chau was a complete disaster that used meat for pho and the rest with cheap vegetables like broccoli and cabbage. The fried noodles came out very soggy and reminded me of eating at TK Noodles. This place is good for late night diners that wants to recoup from drinking but that's about it. 2 stars for opening up early and closing at 3am. The place is somewhat clean and not too cluttered and is bearable to eat in. The service wasn't friendly and not attentive. You practically have to ask for everything. I'm sad to say that Pho Mai has degraded over the years and I hope that they improve going forward. read more

My experience going to this restaurant was definitely unforgettable, considering my two friends and I stopped here for food at 2AM on a Saturday night/Sunday morning before dropping one of them off at the airport. We saw the reviews and thought we'd check it out despite the very large menu, and we just kind of expected to roll in, talk to tired staff, and roll out. Boy were we wrong - this place was JAM PACKED at 2AM. We didn't realize the post-going-out crowd fills this place up like no other. There was so many people that many of the long tables were being shared between parties. The staff looked pretty tired but were cordial regardless, but I don't blame them - a big crowd at 2AM is nothing to be overly energetic about. My friend got pho, I got a grilled chicken banh mi, and my other friend got beef spring rolls. My friend really liked her chicken pho, and in hindsight, I should've gotten pho considering everyone was eating pho. However, my grilled chicken banh mi was pretty good - was a bit scared with the large menu. We were super tired, so the lively space was kind of strange, but we didn't mind. If I would have just gone outside where the tables it, is okay. But when you use their all gender restroom which is for customers only. When I used to live in San Jose in the mid 90s, this was my place to go get my pho/rice plate fix. Although the ambiance has changed, the short and now very older lady is still there nearly 30 years later - what a trip! LoL Food/Offering: Obviously the pho is what most people order at these places. The pho is still good but doesn't really stand out compared to other places that I've have been going to. Also, for the other dishes like vermicelli and rice, I noticed that the portions are smaller now, but in fairness, the pricing is cheaper than most. 4 of 5 stars. Service: This place is a pay first, get a number and find a seat. Back in the day, you paid last. I noticed in past visits, they had numerous ditchers with their mugs posted for all to see. I'm ok with paying first but I cannot justify a tip (if any) until after all is said and done. Oh, and the old lady is still grouchy =) 4 of 5 stars. Overall: I would still go back to this place when in the San Jose/Milpitas area. My last visit was earlier this month when I dropped off a family member at the SFO airport. Also, they close at 3AM! This is one of the best late night spots. When you pull up, the entire exterior is extremely brightly lit, and there's always people inside no matter the hour. You order and pay at the front before getting a number and sitting down. They have a handwritten menu on the wall, but I found that impossible to understand. Make sure to just use their printed menu, which is quite expansive but contains some photos too. We got the extra large #1 noodles and vegetarian spring rolls. I think the XL noodles could have had more broth, felt like we were drowning in noodles without the right ratio of broth. One downside is we got spare bowls and they were a bit dirty, so check that. Monday-Wednesday they're open from 5am-3am and Thursday-Sunday they're open from 8am to 4am. It sucks writing this cause I've liked this place over the years but two major things tonight just are making me not come back. The nastiest part All front workers had the same!!!!! Gloves on the entire time. And yes sadly I could tell cause our server had the same red mark the entire night and the other guy never went to the back. Cozy spot in town open late! I got the big bone soup and my boyfriend got the pho. Misleading menu on pricing for the big bone soup, but the big bone part wasn't misleading so wasn't even mad lol. The soup was super salty, couldn't drink it and you can imagine eating this ginormous bone was hard. Lots of bone marrow, unfortunately couldn't get to it. Well we've only been there once but we both liked it. My wife got pho with beef and the first thing she said was "the broth is good". She also said the beef was good. I got vermicelli salad with pork and I ate every bite. The pork was sliced thin and flavorful. There was some fat here and there but the kind you want to eat. We definitely plan on coming back. Got the pho #1 special, and tocilog & eggs plate (with white rice on request instead of garlic rice), pretty decent dishes, the tocilog not as sweet as I'm used to but the flavor was still good and the pork pieces were tender and satisfying with fresh tomato on the side (they already get points in my book just for offering filipino breakfast items, which I love). The strawberry smoothie and avocado smoothie were even better, excellent consistency and taste, and the perfect level of sweetness. We enjoyed our dinner and drinks for takeout, but they offer a good amount of dine-in seating (2 rooms plus a few tables outside), and a casual and inviting atmosphere, with plenty of colorful art and decor on the walls, fish tanks filled with quirky accessories, and lots of pictures and signage about menu items. Terrible service and food. We parked in front of this restaurant that has no signs / restrictions for public parking. This lady behind the counter came chasing after us saying that we can't park here in Vietnamese. We came back five minutes later and there was trash on our windshield. When she saw us come back to drive away, she came out yelling again. My friends and I have tried this place once before this incident and it wasnt very good. The inside is dirty and water is self service. The only reason why people come here is because it opens late. I have never seen anyone inside eating unless everything else is closed. read more

I called to place an order lastnight around 9pm for my sisters birthday. When I was telling the old grandma my order and specifically what I wanted and she kept cutting me off , and repeating it wrong so I had to go over it several times to make sure she heard me and she kept saying is that it , and rushing me off the phone I had a feeling she was gonna get it all WRONG we get there and I ask my sister to check the bag and she assumed it was all there I get home to make my soup and I have zero yellow noodles with meat and that's not what I ordered I' only recieved the broth and meat but no noodles so I was upset having to drive all the way back to pick up my noodles. She charged me for meat in it. For 2 soups I paid $39 All I got was a small mb soup, broth with yellow noodles and your telling me that's worth $39 so therefore I will never come back I been coming here for many many many years and I have finally had enough So disappointing Horrible customer service. I tried to explain to the guy my order was wrong when I got there and he ignored me and said hold on and walked away and never came back to check with me what I needed I wish I would have returned it all!!!
