When I was telling the old grandma my order and specifically what I wanted and she kept cutting me off , and repeating it wrong so I had to go over it several times to make sure she heard me and she kept saying is that it , and rushing me off the phone I had a feeling she was gonna get it all WRONG we get there and I ask my sister to check the bag and she assumed it was all there I get home to make my soup and I have zero yellow noodles with meat and that's not what I ordered I' only recieved the broth and meat but no noodles so I was upset having to drive all the way back to pick up my noodles. She charged me for meat in it. For 2 soups I paid $39 All I got was a small mb soup, broth with yellow noodles and your telling me that's worth $39 so therefore I will never come back I been coming here for many many many years and I have finally had enough So disappointing Horrible customer service. I tried to explain to the guy my order was wrong when I got there and he ignored me and said hold on and walked away and never came back to check with me what I needed I wish I would have returned it all!!! I haven't been here in a few years. The food was great then and it's still great now. Their menu has a huge selection. It can be a bit overwhelming trying to decide. The restaurant is a bit on the small side and has a cramped feeling to it but IMO the food is worth it. Also there's a good friendly vibe there with customers so the stranger sitting close to you is likely someone worth saying "Hi" to. Restaurant is well lit which is nice if you go at the wee hours of the morning, it's open until 3am. One side of the huge parking lot has zero light so try to park as close as you can to the restaurant at night. It's a safe area but you want to keep an eye out for any cars that might be going through there and the driver doesn't see you. The staff is pretty busy so don't expect friendly exchanges, they're focused on getting their job done. If you do need something you can feel comfortable asking, they'll take care of what you need. My boyfriend and I visited Pho Mai on Monday, 01/01/24, around 1 am. Upon entrance, we were informed that we needed to order at the counter first and then select a table of our choice. I ordered the XL #12 (Beef Meatball Pho) with the Shrimp Spring Rolls. He got the L #19 (Chicken Meatball Pho) with Egg rolls. When the food arrived, our pho orders got swapped. We received the XL bowl of Chicken Meatball Pho and the L bowl of Beef Meatball Pho when it should've been the other way around. We explained this to one of the staff members, and we went back and forth for a bit. He resolved the issue by bringing a little bowl of the Beef Meatball Pho to equate to the XL bowl, which I had initially asked for. Despite this mini situation, most of the food was decent. The Beef Meatball Pho was good, especially with the Sriracha sauce. The egg rolls were on point. The Shrimp Spring Rolls were disappointing, though. I did not favor the taste whatsoever. The inside of the restaurant was hard to navigate through. It was a tight squeeze in some areas and crowded with many people. It was also unfortunate that there was only one bathroom in the entire restaurant. There was a long line waiting for it. Definitely not the best spot to get banh xeo from and I was expecting the iced cold avocado dessert to be like smashed avocado, but it was like smoothie texture. I could barely taste any avocado flavor and the pearls tasted like it has been left out for awhile. The strawberry pearl was really sweet and would've been better without the pearls. We went to lunch today but our go to spot was closed so I jumped on Yelp and found this spot nearly across the street. It's located in a small parking some other food places. The parking lot looks rundown and honestly so does this place from the outside. As we walked up I noticed hand smudging all over the windows and glass doors. Walking in it looks like they've been at this location for years and it could use some sprucing up on the inside. The lady that greeted us was super nice and had a big smile. I ordered pork vermicelli with egg rolls and my buddy ordered the crispy noodles with beef. The table we sat at had hot chili oil with pepper flakes, yellow peppers, Hussain sauce, Sriracha, their homemade hot sauce, and of all the "weird condiments at a Vietnamese restaurant" ketchup?? Whaat?? Yup I said KETCHUP. The crispy noodles were quite good "a bit chewy but good" my pork vermicelli was also pretty good but the fish sauce I thought was lacking in flavor. Overall I'm on the fence about returning here because, well..... seeing how dirty the windows were it kind of makes me wonder about how clean the kitchen is. read more

tl;dr - I'm surprised about the just-okay rating. I was blown away. Yeah, it's a huge menu, and I've only tried a couple items, but one of those was off the charts. I got the traditional chicken pho. They have a warning - if you swallow any bones, that's your problem. When I ordered it, they further warned me that it comes with bones and skin. Okay, I've been warned and I forge ahead. It was one of the best pho ga bowls I've had in my life. So flavorful! The chicken was tender and tasty. The rice noodles (you have a choice of noodles) were good. The broth was tasty. The large bowl I ordered was plenty big, but it's so good I might get greedy next time and order the XL. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with their duck soup with rice noodles. Was fully expecting a sad suburban pho joint with limp herbs, phoned-in broth, and the kind of meat that makes you question your life choices. I was wrong. Or at least not *entirely* right. Look, is this place Westminster-tier? No. Is it Com Tam Dat Thanh? Also no. But it's ridiculous this place is rated so low. Criminal to be rated so low. It really isn't *that* bad. If anything, it's the kind of spot you'd secretly be fine with if it were in your neighborhood--but pretend to turn your nose up at if you're trying to impress your OC relatives. Pho tai was solid. Broth's on the lighter side, yes, but not offensively so. Could use a touch more anise or charred onion, but it didn't taste like someone just poured hot water over MSG and called it a day. Noodles had the right chew, not mushy. Rare beef was sliced properly and showed up pink, not gray and gasping. The bun thit nuong cha gio was actually the winner. Pork had real caramelization. Not fake grill marks--like actual evidence of flame. Spring rolls had crunch and stayed crunchy in the bowl, which tells you all you need to know. Fish sauce was punchy, didn't taste like syrup. That little cup had integrity. Place is clean, staff doesn't scowl, and food came fast. No idea what the Yelp mob was expecting--5-hour simmered broth served by someone in a silk áo dài? This is good-enough Vietnamese comfort food, served quickly, priced right, and better than 80% of the forgettable pho joints dotting the Peninsula. Wouldn't drive across the Bay for it, but would definitely come back if I'm within a 3-mile radius and mildly hungry. That's a win. read more

I devoured my pho, it hit the spot but as I started to drink my broth, I began to notice small flies in the broth. Let me tell you something. This place is special and very unassuming by their storefront with plastered neon signs and advertisements of their dishes. Right away i knew this place would attract the asian population. Upon walking in my eye was caught by the order here sign near the counter. However, a kind elderly lady grinning from ear to ear ushered me in to a table and brought me a menu sensing I was new. Their menu has cuisine you would come to expect of a Vietnamese restaurant however chicken pho was something I had yet to try and their #19 chicken ball pho was a new item. Their seating arrangement is cozy yet efficient and seemed rather clean. The ambiance reminds me of an upscale local restaurant in Vietnam. They do have a bathroom for customers in the back through the double saloon-style swinging doors. Families would come with their kids and the owners would come out from the kitchen and would sit down and watch tv with the rest of us diners while snacking. I was moved and immediately comforted as the setting reminded me of home. No cheap music blaring in the background, the tv was set to an interesting food channel anyone would actually watch and the actual food itself oh my goodness! There are 3 portion sizes you can get with the pho but the elderly lady didn't bother asking me which size I would like and quite frankly I had no idea which one would be suitable at the time. All I knew was that I was hungry and ready. The pho broth kicked my butt with its deep savory full flavor and had me grinning like an idiot. The chicken balls reminded me of dumpling fillings packed with flavor cooked to utter perfection and changed in texture the longer they sat in the hot broth. The noodles were PERFECT and were not soggy at all but were even on the firmer side which is so hard for Vietnamese places to get right i've noticed. The green onions, sprouts, jalapeño and lemon all fresh. The basil had flowers blooming on the stem and i knew whoever this lady or chef was at this establishment poured their heart into their dishes. The presentation was nothing extraordinary in that sense but it was sensible, straightforward, modest and it was just right. As with pho, they do not hold back with the portions and was delighted to see ample chicken balls and a big portion of noodles underneath all the garnishes on top. Any and pretty much all condiments you would ever need is on the table but a good pho doesn't require anything else. I do like black pepper so I always add that. I also mixed some of their house chili sauce with sriracha (yes its the real thing) to dip the chicken meatballs in. If I am ever in south bay area and am in the mood for pho you can count on it that I will be coming here! read more

Everywhere I went to in San Jose this weekend was not good, including this one! This place is open very late. I got to san jose at 2am so this had to do. I ordered some strange noodle soup that had thick udon type style noodles. It had some seafood in it but the broth tasted like water! My husband ordered the pho. The pho was mid. My problem with the place is the food is sub par to OK but it's really dirty here. Just dishes piled up, dirty floors and tables. What's excellent is that they are open late and don't mind my dog. I honestly wish I could give this place zero stars. The entire experience was awful from start to finish. First, the food was beyond disappointing. I ordered orange chicken with rice, and what I got didn't even seem like chicken--it looked and tasted so off that I genuinely couldn't tell what I was eating. I'll leave that up to your imagination. The sho pao was just as bad--hard, dry, and missing the egg that's supposed to be inside, and a sad looking piece of meat to accompany it! . When I brought it up, I was told they don't even make it in-house and that I should "take it up with the people who make it," which is completely unacceptable. As if that wasn't enough, the pho tasted like it had been sitting around for days. It was not fresh by any means and had an unpleasant, stale flavor. The service made everything even worse. When I asked for a refund, I was handed $10 with no real apology, and the staff continued to be rude and disrespectful, even talking badly about me right in front of me. I love going to Pho Mai since they are open until 3 am. I visited late in the evening, and the restaurant was still packed. People were waiting in line to order when I came. The elderly lady took the orders, and I paid after. She could be slow and had a hard time hearing orders, but it was totally fine since she got my orders right. The orders were served promptly even though they were busy. I ordered Dac Biet pho and crispy pork belly banh mi. The broth was okay, but it was very filling. I also got a decent amount of meat in my soup. On the other hand, I wasn't a fan of the banh mi. It was bland; it needed at least some salt and pepper. The pork belly slices were also thin. Lastly, we found a hair on the plate of the spring roll. We didn't say anything since it didn't touch the food or the sauce; we just removed it and continued eating. Overall, I like going to Pho Mai because it is a good place to hang out with friends, even after midnight. Honestly, the inside is a mess, but if you're not picky and just want to get pho and hang out with friends, then I recommend Pho Mai. read more

Fairly decent pho place at 1am. Not the usual set up as most places; you need to order by the counter first then they'll bring everything to your table. The food takes about 10 mins or so to come out around this time since the place does get crowded this late since it's one of the few places that are open late night. Regarding the taste of the food, the pho broth reminds me more of a boiled goat stew flavor more than the beefy ones you find at San Jose. It's not bad but definitely better than some of the "medicine" tasting ones from the peninsula. The XL sized bowl has lots of noodles and a decent amount of meat but not as much as the ones more towards San Jose. The fried items seem to have tough meat and the drinks taste more on the sweeter side for certain drinks. Also when ordering to go/pick up items they tend to take roughly 30 mins minimum. I found this out the hard way when trying to order some extra stuff to go. read more
